Cheri,
I just posted a reply for Cecilia about the books. I’m so glad she is also
interested in the conference. I’m hoping that I will be able to make the 2021
conference.
It is so informative and fun.

No, sorry, I'm not an author (nor a male) and there will be no books for sale
at the Portuguese Genealogy Conference and Research Trip in Salt Lake City in
2021. Doreen must be thinking of something else and not the Portuguese

2019-10-20 Thread doreencaetano
Cecilia, Here’s the link for the books.
https://philippegarnier112.wixsite.com/familiasilhaterceira/copie-de-familias-da-ilha-terceira

He also includes it at the bottom of his post. He often refers the books when
answering the questions. I just love the way he does not hold the information
or the links to the records from you. He gives you the info in response to your
question. Many times he provides you with links to the records and additional
information. Every time I have followed his research it has been accurate. ‘m
looking forward to getting a set of his books. I want to check to see if my
work agrees with his research.

I’m hoping Philipp Garnier sees this post and creates a new post or at least
replys to this one. It appears there are several people in the Facebook group
that are interested in his books. I’m hoping they follow you and join this
group. Philipp has been so helpful in my Altares research. Not only for me but
many of my DNA found cousins too.

My guess is that if the flyer is in Portuguese, the classes would be in
Portuguese.

It's not ADA compliant over there. Some of the larger hotels probably have
accommodations. You'd want a taxi or rent a car. Walking would be a challenge
as it is an island with lots of going up and down hills. The streets are
cobblestone, so not the best if walking is a problem. The churches all have
stairs. If you can navigate them slowly then you may be okay. We had an 80 year
old with us last year at San Joaninas and he took it slow and easy.

After seeing your comments, Doreen, I revisited and agree, the name is
Fructuozo. Just goes to show, I shouldn't be so hasty.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Alves/Alvaro Carvalho and Ferreira Drummond

2019-09-04 Thread doreencaetano
For what it is worth…I have Joao Escorcio’s daughter, Branca Afonso Escorcia
Drummond, married to Belchior Goncalves Ferreira. Branca and Belchior have a
daughter named Isabel Afonso de Azevedo. This information came from an online
Drummond tree. There is a research group especially for the Drummond family.
I did not have Isabel’s marriage. Did you find the church record? What is your
source for this marriage information?
Sincerely.

Hi Doreen,

This is Francisco so it was originally wrong on the margin but scratched out.
He is son of Manuel Borges of Altares and Domingas de São Mateus, native of the
parish of Santa Beatriz of Quatro Ribeiras (On Teceira not Faial); both are
parishioners of Altares.

What I see is that this baptism was on 11 January? 1714 by the priest, but was
first baptized at home on 5 of the same month by Maria Nunes, daughter of
Manuel Homem Machado and his wife Apolonia Nunes.  I'm assuming that 5 Jan is
the date of birth.

Thank you for your help.  I checked her daughter, Maria Rosario,  four children
baptism records from Lajes do Pico: Manuel 24 Nov 1901 list maternal
grandparents Jose Silveira e Genoveva Ignancia; Maria 29 Jan 1904 and Joao 08
Jun 1908 and Francisca 16 Dec 1906 only list maternal as Genoveva Ignancia.

I've looked at both records and agree with you.  It looks like Manuel Jorge and
Domingos Gonçalves both have Simam? Gonçalves and Beatriz Gonçalves listed as
parents; Maria Machado and Ines Gonçalves both have Salvador Lucas (Luques) (da
Guiar) and Ana Gonçalves listed as parents.  So just as their names suggest (ha
ha) Manuel Jorge and Domingos Gonçalves are brothers while their wives Maria
Machado and Ignes Gonçalves are sisters.

Very difficult record; I hope I'm right.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Baptism of Twins of Manuel de Oliveira and Maria Coelho

I have an usual record. The first record is on the left side of the page for

hard time reading their marriage record so these two record are very important.
I think the baptism of the second twin Joseph (at the top of the right side of

Please, any help would be appreciated. This is an end of tree for me since I

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help reading very usual listing of godparents

2019-08-06 Thread doreencaetano
I need help with the reading of my 6th Great aunt’s baptism, Maria de Ornelas.
It seems to list several godmothers ? I’m definitively lost in the grammar.

Here’s the link to the record and the record at the bottom of the left side of
the page.
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-ALTARES-B-1708-1723/TER-AH-ALTARES-B-1708-1723_item1/P4.htm

This is what I see
For godparents Antonia Coelho, Maria Coelho, children of Joao Goncalves de
Ornelas (which is Maria’s (the baby’s) grandfather so these would be her aunts
and thus my 7th Great Aunts) ?eo padrinhro, daughter of Beatriz de Melo
(grandmother of Maria, the Baby, and Joao’s wife) ?e a godmother daughter of
Maria Coelho ? same Joao Goncalves de Ornelas, deceased.

Now in my database I have Joao and Beatriz’ daughter Maria but I do not have
another daughter named Antonia. I do have a son named Antonio. Now Joao had
another wife named Maria Coelho so maybe this is information on her?
Thanks, Doreen Caetano

[AZORES-Genealogy] Having problems with Ana Lourenco's husband's name

2019-08-01 Thread doreencaetano
I have several documents that give his name but I’m unfamiliar with it and can
not make it out. He is married to Ana Lourenco and I have them with two
children so far.
The first document I have is his son’s (Joao Coelho) marriage to Agueda da
Costa at the top of the page.

The second document I have is his daughter’s (Ana Lourenco) marriage to Manuel
Vieira at the top of the left side of the page.

[AZORES-Genealogy] help with Sao Bartolomeu marriage record of Manuel Toledo and Maria da Costa

2019-08-01 Thread doreencaetano
I can make out the names of the groom and bride but I can not read the names of
the parents. I do not know if it because it is a different priest or maybe
names that I’m not familiar with but I can not figure it out. Any help you
could give would be appreciated.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help reading this Altares marriagerecordofBartolomeu Goncalves and Maria Nunes from 1670

2019-08-01 Thread doreencaetano
That’s so funny I do things like that too. Then hen helping cousin do their
research I’m usually able to give it to someone. This was not part of my
lineage but my Cousin’s Mel’s tree. He does not do research but his MtDNA test
came back with a very rare line. In the research group there are only 200 world
wide so they were so excited to see a new person but I had not completed the
research on this line so …thus all the work I doing now so I can give them the
tree that goes with the DNA profile. Thanks again, Doreen

Thank you Doreen but this isn't part of any research I am doing.  This was just
the first inaccuracy I have ever found in the Terceira Marriage Index and I
became briefly obsessed with researching it thoroughly to make sure I was
right.  That being said, the marriage index is an invaluable tool that I use
extensively.  I am grateful for those who created it.

As your sixth-eighth cousin at least 4 different ways through our common
Ribeirinha ancestry, I am glad you could benefit from my malady.

For Manuel's godparents, I'm having a tough time.  Trying to follow the crooked
lines it looks like Simão Gonçalves, deceased; and that doesn't make sense.  It
is probably one of his sons just like it was for his sister Gracia.  The
godmother looks like Maria Manuel, daughter of Manuel Nunes.

CURA is a title for a priest.

I believe this is the same person's obit right side bottom right.  It has
Bartolomeu spelled out; last name Gil

Here is the marriage of the Maria in the above baptism: right side  This is the
has Bartolomeu spelled out; last name Gil

left center  Manuel; it has father as Bermeu Gil

bottom left José;  It has Br.to Gil

2nd on left Gracia; named spelled out as Bertolomeu Gil

2nd on left Isabel; it has name as Bermeu Gil

3rd on right Antoniol; It has name as Br.to  Gil

I believe it says that her Godparents are Joseph Goncalves, widow of Maria
Marques and the Godmother is his daughter Ana Marques. Now the problem is
Joseph was deceased at the wedding of his son Bartolomeu Gil when he married
Maria Nunes in 1670. So I’m thinking I read the record wrong….maybe it is
???Joseph Goncalves’ son Joseph but then why did they say it that way
Could someone with better Poprtugues language skills check to see what it says
about the Godparents of Josefa? Thanks, Doreen

I need help reading this marriage record. If I follow the normal pattern it

Thank you. I saw the same and I have that couple in my database and they are in
this time period. I was just think it might have been saying that the father
had the same name as the son and of course, I do not have the Portuguese
language skills for determining f that was what it was saying. All of these old
marriages and baptism were part of my cousin Mel’s maternal tree. This line is
not related to me but is in the same village so in some case it did come back
to my lines. Now I have a more complete tree for FTDNA. Apparently Mel’s
maternal line according to his MtDNA test is very rare and I wanted to give
them more lineage to work with in their research. It would not have been
possible with out this group’s help. So on behalf of Mel Ormonde and myself I
want to thank everyone. Sincerely, Doreen Caetano

Hi Doreen,

These records you've offered lately are very difficult so I am just as unsure
about this as I was the last record you posted.  Hopefully someone else will
chime in, but I will offer my input.

I do see the groom's name Matias Glz, son of followed by what looks like "Po?
Dias? (Possibly Pedro Dias?) defunto, and his wife Barbara? (first line looks
like Mar-, but I think it is Bar-) Glz, marrying Maria Nunes, daughter of Amaro
Cardoso and Maria Nunes,  I also see the names Cunha and Coelho but I don't
think they represent the family; probably either witnesses or clergy.

I think the bride is the daughter of Pedro Martins (looks like Polo Miz) and
his wife, Ursula Coelho. We need a second set of eyes.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help again reading an old Altares marriage record.

2019-07-27 Thread doreencaetano
Once again I need help reading a marriage record. I have the groom’s info? but
can not follow the bride’s info at all.
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-ALTARES-C-1648-1712/TER-AH-ALTARES-C-1648-1712_item1/P42.html
It is the record in the middle of the right side of the page. It is suppose to
be the record for Antonio Martins and Maria Nunes, according to the index.
Now I have several references referring to Roque Martins and his wife Catarina,
which are the parents of Antonio Martins but I question this information. Maybe
I’m reading it wrong but I can not find them in the marriage index.
Thanks again, Doreen Caetano

Cheri’s marriage date of Dec 1st 1701 is correct.

Can read the following
Groom, Mateus Pereira son of Antonio xx? and Maria Pereira, parishioners of N.
Senhora da Piedade … Ilha do Pico …
Bride, Maria Soares, daughter of Gaspar Fernandes and Isabel Soares

Sorry, cannot discern groom’s father surname.

1st Dec 1701. I can't read in this light. The date was hard enough for me to
see. Hopefully someone else can read it or you can use the Terceira marriage
index.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Primeira d’este

2019-07-21 Thread doreencaetano
I remember research two brothers with same name but they had very different
surnames. In fact it was hard to tied the one to the family except It was
mentioned in a baptism as a brother. That’s when I knew I had been overlooking
this one thinking I did not know how to place him in a tree. It is also
confusing because the men ( in certain families) change their surnames at a
certain point in their lives. This is why I started to create a timeline to
locate when the name changes so maybe I can note why. Still working on that
one.
One thing I work every hard at doing is trying to connect godparents with their
families in my tree. I wish I was better at reading Portuguese because I think
the witnesses at weddings would also hold valuable information for making
connections and completing family groups. I thank God for this group to help
with the reading of the records.

I would love to have a discussion with people who are more skilled then I am to
see if what I’m thinking might have some merit or am I just wasting my time.
Have a great day.

I’m sure you’re right but I am someone that has two Manuels, both lived, and
had families…… Not sure if I’m the example you mentioned or not? When I first
discovered this, I assumed the first Manuel had died. I knew the second Manuel
had lived …. he married the sister of his oldest brother, Francisco, so I never
researched that first Manuel. Eventually, after being contacted by another
researcher, we realized that HER Manuel was the first one in the family, the
one I had assumed had died. (He had changed his last name to Rodgers, possibly
to distinguish him from his brother.) This was proven, by the way, with, among
other things, his obituary that listed all his siblings, including my Francisco
Pereira da Rosa! Pretty exciting and a reminder to all of us to keep an open
mind and make no assumptions without proving or disproving them. Oh, also, this
family had two Maria Delfinas! Thanks a lot, da Rosas, lol. I have never seen
this in any other of my families with Manuels.

for Manuel Coelho and Maria Vieira. This comes from the Terceira Marriage index.
It is the bottom record on the right side of the page. Any additional
information would be appreciated. Thanks, Doreen Caetano

Since it was in several records I was thinking it might have become a nickname
but I guess not. Since I do not speak the language I do not know if that could
have been or is it even a possibility…for that word to be used as a nickname.
Thanks for your help. Have a great time at the conference. I wish I was able to

for me. I will be thinking of all of you that are lucky enough to be able to
attend.

Doreen, you are looking at page two of Francisco’s marriage, if you go back one
image from 189 to image number 188 you will see it.  Yes, according to this
marriage link you sent Antonio dos Santos Marques is the father.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Can't read this Altares Marriage record

2019-06-20 Thread doreencaetano
My link is for Francisco Marques dos Santos. I already had Antonio in the
database. I do not know how or if they connect. I have the Terceira Marriage
Index downloaded to my computer and that is how I know the information I
already know and just a random search for related records gave me the death
records. I guess that is my only solution to keep randomly search through the
time period for more records. Thank you for your help. Doreen

Doreen,

You will find it as Antonio dos Santos Marques, left side.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-ALTARES-C-1713-1763/TER-AH-ALTARES-C-1713-1763_item1/P83.html

There’s an index available on line for the marriages for Terceira island but, I
can’t find the link, perhaps someone here can help with that.  It will make it
so much easier for you.

I think you may be able to get it through the Tombo site.

This is what I know about this record:
It is the marriage record for Francisco Marques dos Santos and Francisca

They were married in 1763 in Altares.
It is the record at the top of the left side of the page.

What I would like to find is the parents’ names. Any ideas?

I know they had two children: Maria Joaquina (About 1749 – 2/22/1851) and

If I’m reading this correctly have a baptism record for Francisca, daughter of

This means that Francisca Rosa, Francisco first wife, passed away before this

I know this is asking a lot (to read 3 records and check to see if I read

I've never seen that but apparently the colon goes between compound surnames:
Gonçalves:Ferreira (groom), Gonçalves:Ferreira (groom's father), then I believe
Gonçalves:Fialho for the bride's father.

Yes, Goncalves is abbreviated. But I don't know what's up with the colon and

I’m so glad you responded. I believe the godfather to be the Antonio Coelho de
Melo who changed his name to Antonio Coelho Berbereia. I think the godmother is
his sister Rosa Emillianna. Please take another look at the record to see if

What I can make out is it’s the daughter? (If it is a girl I can not make out
the name, if it is a boy then it is Antonio), Child of Agostinho Coelho de Melo
and Maria de Nazareth. The parents are from Altares. The baby was born
1/28/1827. The godparents are Antonio Coelho de Melo? Then I think it was
corrected to Berbereia (which makes sense since many of the Coelho de Melo men
change their names to Coelho Berbereia sometime during their lives…I think it
is after their namesake dies but I still constructing a timeline for the name
changes to see it that is the case) and godmother Rosa Emillanna. Please Help
me with this record. Is the baby a boy or girl? Is there a name change on the
godparent? Do I have the birth date correct. Did I miss any information? I
believe the godparents to be the paternal uncle and aunt. Also it is another
date to maybe note a change in name. Thanks again. Doreen Caetano

The freguesias are only a couple of miles apart. Depending on where they lived

The father is Sao Roque. The mother is Doze Ribeiras. You can use the maps on

seeing in the document.

Godparents look like Antonio Jose e Maria da Something Rosa, children of

I used https://geneall.net - I think it was created by 4 or 5 Portuguese
historians. It has current people as well and you can contribute, but I think
it goes through a vetting process. The noble lines are color coded so it’s easy
to follow. If you just want to look at previous kings, go to the main menu,
select Former Royal House then Portugal. They are usually good at putting the
source as well. You do have to register and for some content you have to pay
($40 year roughly).

Ancestry, My Heritage, and Geni have some type of trees managed by an

I don't like the Geni trees either. Especially for our Portuguese ancestors
that often have same names. People merge them into their own tree and as
mentioned you lose control.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] July 1900 disaster Santa Maria?

2019-03-02 Thread doreencaetano
One day I discovered my 2nd great grandparents, Jose Ferreira de Ormonde and
Catarina Rosa of Altares lost three daughters in one week. First was the baby,
Maria (2/4/1844-5/5/1844) then Isabel (11/21/1839- 5/14/1844) and Maria
Candida (4/30/1841-5/14/1844) on the same day. I always have trouble reading
the obit records but I got so upset I could not continue to do research. I can
not imagine how they could bear the loss. I share this information with several
relatives. We thought the same thing …maybe a disease … but then it could have
been an accident where the older girls survive for several days. It is too sad
to think about. I just offer up prayers for them and what they had to go
through. I often wondered if it would be in the annual records of Terceira.
Since I can not read the books (written by Francisco Ferreira Drummond) I can
not even check to see. Wish I could speak and read Portuguese. I do not think
the records says what they died of.

Hope no one reads this while drinking their morning coffee or having a meal.

Sanitation (or lack thereof) could be a cause. I was researching a
non-Portuguese line in Kentucky in the 1850s. And they had death records! First
the 2 or 3 year old dies. Two weeks later, mom dies and the 8 year old dies
only 2 days after the mom. Cause of death: Flux. Old term for dysentery. I had
to look that one up too. Really bad diarrhea. I could only imagine the mom, who
washed the diapers and other clothes, then went to cook or peel potatoes or
something. Or even kissed or touched the other child with infected hands. Wiped
his nose. Anything. Hand washing wasn't a thing back then. And I'm guessing it
was the same all over the world. I saw a PBS show where a doctor was trying to
figure out all these people dying in one location and then a random person
several miles away. Who it turned out was in the core area (lack of sanitation)
and picked up the illness. The stuff we didn't know back then. Simple hand
washing to prevent a lot of illness. Terribly sad.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] A DNA Success Story

2019-02-27 Thread doreencaetano
Yes. I guess I’m confused so I will stay with my terminology when I talk to the
people I work with because I know what I mean and can illustrate what I mean to
them so we speaking about the same thing.
But I may have been applied the term correctly in one case. There are two line
in my tree where cousins marry their cousins over several generations. One
line is from Altares/Raminho, Terceira. My maternal grandfather’s brother
married his maternal 1st cousin. His other brother married an paternal 2nd
cousin. Their parents were first cousins. This is why I have been working with
others with connections from these two villages because we several difference
ways. It was only once I started working wide in the tree (which may be the
same thing as robust) is when the connections where easier to locate. I wonder
if this would be a correct use of the term?
The line other is from Ribeirinha, Terceira but I have not been working that
closely with people on this lines. I do not think it would be what you
mentioned, endogamy. There are several connections but not that close (my
paternal grandparents were at least twice 4th cousins, many cases of siblings
marrying other a set of siblings but that is not cousins marrying and cousins
marrying into the same family but again that is not cousins marrying cousins).
Several people who are related to me through both lines already see the
difference. We work together to locate the connections and often we are
building much more detailed trees with better documentation. I think everyone
benefits from our shared work. I believe it is cutting down on errors or
misinformation being passed along. I think everyone who researches these two
villages in the future will benefit from our work. Maybe once the Altares
group has completed more work/connections maybe I can attempt to start
something with my RIbeirinha lines. But this too may be off the topic too.
Thanks for your explanation,
Doreen

Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] A DNA Success Story

Endogamy isn't as simple as "cousins marrying." Many people completely
misunderstand that explanation. They find that their John Smith marries his
first cousin, Jane Jones, and they state "I have endogamy in my tree!" Uh, no
they don't. They have a cousin marriage. Those of us who come from truly
endogamous populations have to keep explaining this over and over. Endogamy is
when a person has MANY ancestors marrying cousins, causing one to be related to
various cousins in multiple ways.

Any good, fully-featured genealogy program would show this for endogamy:

That's just ONE cousin example. I could pick another cousin (not the sibling,
not her first cousin), but basically close my eyes and blindly pick another
cousin and get something similar. A cousin marriage would have just shown the
4C1R and clicking the Progenitors button to locate the couple in my program
would show they are first cousins. So I now state that it's being related to
"multiple people in multiple ways." It seems to be a thing in genealogy now
where people want to be something else. Many Americans try to claim Cherokee
(as if there is no other tribe in America). And now with DNA, people are trying
to claim endogamy. When Kalani Mondoy, the Hawaiian Polynesian DNA Admin, and I
go to DNA meetings or man DNA education tables, we generally have to go over
the difference between a "cousin marriage" and what really is endogamy. We wish
people would quit using "cousin marriage" as the definition for endogamy. It's
not a cousin marriage.

As I mentioned, "robust tree" is how genetic genealogists refer to researching
their family genealogy. It's the collateral lines and bringing them FORWARD.
When I first got into genealogy in the early 90s, I took a class. We were
taught that proper genealogy was to research your ancestral couple (name, date,
place and birth, marriage, death), get ALL their kids (same pieces of
information), and then get ALL the grandkids (same pieces of information). So
basically come forward to the 1st cousin level from an ancestral couple. With
DNA connecting us to more of our 2nd, 3rd, and beyond cousins, we are having to
bring our trees a little further forward in time, trying to collect the great
and even 2 greats of our ancestral couple. Coming forward in time with as many
lines as you can is a robust tree. It's not the number lines or the amount of
people. It's bringing as many of your lines forward in time as you can.

Pedigree collapse is when you find you don't have to research a particular line
because you have already researched it because it's being repeated due to
cousins marrying. So you don't need to research it back in time. It's already
done. Pedigree collapse is researching BACKWARDS. You're kinda morphing
pedigree collapse into robust tree and confusing the terms :)

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] A question about following the correct lineage

2019-02-25 Thread doreencaetano
This is why I like to work on a line off the social media until I know the
lineage is correct. If you have mistakes then it get repeated by others then
years later you get fed back the same information and you are thinking this
verifies your research but it was from your original work so it still would not
have been verified by anyone else. Since I work alone a lot this always
worries me so until I have someone else confirming the work I wait to put it

It definitely IS difficult! I’d say by the preponderance of evidence.
Sometimes, in research as you know, you don’t get enough direct evidence for a
definitive answer, so you have to use the concept of preponderance of evidence.
So, collect every record you can for this person, couple, and children….. even
grandchildren to see if he is mentioned ….. at least the one you think is your
person ….. and compare them. Hopefully it will give you an answer you are
comfortable with.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] A question about following the correct lineage

Ok, this question is complicated to ask, let alone to figure out the answer
but; here goes…   With so many people of the same name marrying so many people
of the same name and with the priests sometimes writing Francisco Tavares
Monteiro and sometime Francisco Monteiro Tavares, some periods of time and some
records listing the grandparents and some not; how the heck is one ever sure of
following the correct/same line?  Is it all just an educated guess?

Thanks for your thoughts and expertise.

Philippe, I will contact you privately. In case I have made an error I do not
want to propagate it through a social media outlet. Can not pull back the info
once it is out there even if it is wrong. I’m in the middle of partitioning
some farmland and doing taxes so I will get it to you as I can .

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestor info- Antonio Brier

Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestor info- Antonio Brier

Corrine M,

Brier is not a Portuguese surname. It must be corrupted from something else.
Maybe someone has some ideas.

Josephine could be Josefa there. So keep that name in mind too.

Common Portuguese names for males are Manuel, Antonio, Jose, Francisco, Joao.
We all have Antonio's in our trees.

Oliver would be Oliveira over there. The final vowel was kinda swallowed and
not enunciated, so it sounded closer to o-LEE-ver (ver rhymes with bear. A
native speaker can do better, I'm sure).

I don't know when you tested on 23 and Me. If it was their v. 3 or v. 4 chip,
you can transfer to Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). If you tested with 23 and Me since
August 2017, you are on their v. 5 chip and it won't transfer. 23andMe tests
about 640,000 SNPs (compared to FTDNA's 700,000), however, only 160,000 of
those SNPs can be used by FTDNA (the rest that 23 and Me uses are medical, I
believe). FTDNA won't imputate either (make the computer take a guess - too
many false positives, I'm sure). I understand that GedMatch kinda separates
23andMe's v. 5 kits because they have so few family markers (Ancestry DNA has
about 350,000 SNPs). If you tested at AncestryDNA, you can transfer as they
have about half the family SNPs that FTDNA tests for. Or you can just test on
FTDNA and get 100% of their SNPs. Let me know if this interests you.

You need to do more work on your Josephine. You need to figure out her
freguesia (like a village) on Faial, her birthdate (or something within a
range) and who her parents were. Having Antonio is not enough. I have 6
Josefa's in my genealogy program who have father's named Antonio. I'm sure
other long-time researchers can beat my numbers.

Start with Josephine's death and work backwards. You have no death dates (or
birth or marriage) for her. Or you didn't state them in the post. You need 3
pieces of information: Name, date, and place and you need it for 3 key events:
birth, marriage, and death. There's 30+ pages of how to here:
https://goo.gl/HQJ59h

Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing. Or if you have previously
unposted information to share.

godparents. I believe they are relatives of the parents. It is the record on

Hi Doreen,

It says "filho do outro d' mesmo nome"  (son of another of the same name), so
the groom's father was Joao Rodrigues Monteiro, deceased.

It also  says both newlyweds are parishioners and were baptized in the same
parish stated above (so Fontinhas).  I expect it is the same Maria Eugenia you
refer to above as she would have been 20 years old at the time.
