[AZORES-Genealogy] CCA site down

2016-05-06 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
It seems the CCA site has been down since Wednesday evening and is
frustrating for us wanting to research or need to do a quick look up. I know
there are many new list members that may not be aware but I have extensive
data on the parish of Santissimo Salvador in Ribeirinha Sao Miguel. I also
have limited date on NS Estrella. In many cases I have copies of the
records. I am sure there are other members that have data on other parishes.

Sandra P,

I don't work for the CCA, so I don't know. But what I know about Web
designersthey don't seem to go back and use something old. They use
newer designs and newer codes. There was a time when there was a lot of
hand coding the html, and then there was the Cascading Style Sheets (or I
think that's what CSS stood for). Now, it seems like many go to WordPress
now. I haven't kept up nor have I taken a computer class in a long time. At
any rate, it doesn't seem like they would go back to an old design. Maybe
they just went back to the old look, hoping no one would remember. I
remember though. Major life event for me. And that web design was around
then, give or take a couple of years.

The majority of my husband’s family comes from Vila Franca do Campo. The next
largest group, from Ribeira Grande. (Deep sigh…) It is an understatement
that I am ready to see those records come online! My pencil is in my mouth
and my fingers are ready to hit the keys, just as soon as the records are
 posted! Haha.

However, despite the wait, my overwhelming feeling is of deep gratitude that
these records are being put online. I recall the old days of squeezing in an
hour at the Family History Center on my way home from work, sitting in the
darkest corner of the room to eliminate light washout of those dark films,
trying to focus ancient and sketchy microfilm viewers and then squandering a
half hour of my precious time juggling the film over to the copier and
tweaking its settings so I could save a copy of the record I found, stifling
my cry of “NOOO” as I realized that the records ended before the
baptisms and marriages of some critical people: those years have made me
appreciate the contrast of sitting in my pajamas at my computer at 1 in the
morning with (mostly) clear, enlargeable, easy to copy and save images. We
 live in marvelous times!

Some of you may remember how it used to be done before there was internet
access to family history records, before there were online indexes, before
many microfilms available now had even been filmed. In those days direct
physical contact was required. Remember the “SASE”? That means “Self
Addressed Stamped Envelope”, which is what you included (often with a
donation check) when you wrote an inquiry letter to a potential source. Then
you often waited for months for a reply. Finding the basic details of my
Irish line involved driving 1000 miles to New Jersey, visiting court houses
and cemeteries and rectories, and negotiating with the priest who wanted to
deny me access to his parish records because he was sure I was violating the
privacy of his parishioners who died in the 1860’s. In those days it could
take close to a year to track and receive a single birth record. Committing
to fill in a four-generation pedigree chart meant you were in for the long
haul. If you didn’t have patience, you didn’t do family history.

Realizing that those Vila Franca do Campo records may be online before next
Christmas has touched me deeply and filled me with great happiness. It will
happen so soon! When those last Sao Miguel records come online, I will do the
 dance of joy.

 Feeling grateful in Chicagoland,

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] CCA site

2013-12-15 Thread Eileen Leite
The majority of my husband's family comes from Vila Franca do Campo. The
next largest group, from Ribeira Grande. (Deep sigh.) It is an
understatement that I am ready to see those records come online! My pencil
is in my mouth and my fingers are ready to hit the keys, just as soon as the
records are posted! Haha.

However, despite the wait, my overwhelming feeling is of deep gratitude that
these records are being put online. I recall the old days of squeezing in an
hour at the Family History Center on my way home from work, sitting in the
darkest corner of the room to eliminate light washout of those dark films,
trying to focus ancient and sketchy microfilm viewers and then squandering a
half hour of my precious time juggling the film over to the copier and
tweaking its settings so I could save a copy of the record I found, stifling
my cry of NOOO as I realized that the records ended before the
baptisms and marriages of some critical people: those years have made me
appreciate the contrast of sitting in my pajamas at my computer at 1 in the
morning with (mostly) clear, enlargeable, easy to copy and save images. We
live in marvelous times!

Some of you may remember how it used to be done before there was internet
access to family history records, before there were online indexes, before
many microfilms available now had even been filmed. In those days direct
physical contact was required. Remember the SASE? That means Self
Addressed Stamped Envelope, which is what you included (often with a
donation check) when you wrote an inquiry letter to a potential source. Then
you often waited for months for a reply. Finding the basic details of my
Irish line involved driving 1000 miles to New Jersey, visiting court houses
and cemeteries and rectories, and negotiating with the priest who wanted to
deny me access to his parish records because he was sure I was violating the
privacy of his parishioners who died in the 1860's. In those days it could
take close to a year to track and receive a single birth record. Committing
to fill in a four-generation pedigree chart meant you were in for the long
haul. If you didn't have patience, you didn't do family history.

Realizing that those Vila Franca do Campo records may be online before next
Christmas has touched me deeply and filled me with great happiness. It will
happen so soon! When those last Sao Miguel records come online, I will do
the dance of joy.

Feeling grateful in Chicagoland,

Eileen,

You take the words right out of my mouth! You forgot to mention going to the
National Archives to look at Census records and being happy to get ONE family
found in the 8 hours there!! We are all getting really spoiled when we can go
on FamilySearch or Ancestry.com and find one family in 5 Census’ in one hour! I
feel for those of you who are awaiting your records but, as you say, we must be
thankful that they are eventually going to be on our home computer screens!

I feel that I am one of the lucky ones who had most of my people on Sao Jorge
and Terceira and they were the first islands to be put online! I am, myself,
awaiting Graciosa but in the meantime I look at those records on microfilm at
my local FHC!

Good luck to all and hopefully they will all be available to us soon. My hats
go off to those in the Azores who are working so hard to get the records
online.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] CCA site

2013-12-15 Thread Cheri Mello
Kathy Cardoza spent several hours redoing the Azores GenWeb pages so they
have the same info as the CCA site. So we can view Sao Miguel here:
http://goo.gl/Z70Ncr

It looks like they need Santo Antonio and Sao Vicente Ferreira and that
will complete Ponta Delgada.

They seem to do things a little inconsistently in the names (Matriz,
instead of the name of the church), but yet you look in the council of
Nordeste and there appears to be no Matriz. It's there, it's called Sao
Jorge. We need to look both ways!

Their email does say and. But now they tell Angela they don't know.
Graciosa has 4 freguesias and Santa Maria had 4 freguesias filmed, but 5
freguesias exist today.

If they post those 2 islands and go back to Ribeira Grande, the order (via
the Azores GenWeb - thank you Kathy!) should be:
Calhetas, Fenais da Ajuda or Fenais de Vera Cruz (old name), Lomba da Maia,
Maia, Pico da Pedra, Porto Formoso, Rabo de Peixe, Ribeira Grande (N.S. da
Estrella is the Matriz, I think), Ribeira Grande - N. S. da Conceicao,
Ribeira Seca, and is Ribeirnha part of R.Grande? So that's 10 or 11
parishes.

Vila Franca do Campo has 5: Agua d'Alto, Ponta Garca, Ribeira das Tainhas,
Vila Franca - Sao Miguel Arcanjo (Matriz), and Vila Franca do Campo - Sao
Pedro. There's a newer freguesia called Ribeira Seca that was founded in
2002 (broke of from S.Miguel Arcanjo - the Matriz). Geez, there's one over
in R.Grande called Ribeira Seca. I think they need a law that says you
can't have 2 freguesias with the same name on the same island.

Instead of discussing it here and how happy we are with the records, I
think we should email the CCA and tell them how we appreciate all their
hard work: drac.i...@azores.gov.pt

And while you are thanking people, you can just hit reply to this email and
thank Kathy for her work on the Azores GenWeb.

And as Eileen said, it used to take a very long time to work a line before
digitized records. I could spend a year on just ONE ancestor. I spent 4
years tracing my immigrant ancestor, trying to find the freguesia. Today,
I could probably figure out the freguesia in a month! We've come a long
way!!!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] CCA site

2013-12-15 Thread Ricardo Chaves
I live in Sao Miguel, I have done research *inloco* several times. I have
had, in my hands, perfectly well preserved books, and also, some in very
delicate state of deterioration. I have sent several emails to CCA
administration and for what I understand, the conditions of these books
ALSO contribute to what ever policy of priority they are following, to the
online publication.

My most recent email response from the CCA administration, in other words,
last week, was that they are just finishing Ponta Delgada (and I am
anxiously waiting for Sao Vicente) and will do their best to make Santa
Maria available as soon as possible, Island where I am from, and where my
direct line (Chaves) is from. I have done some extensive research in CCA,
in these books already.

(I underlined and balded
thousands of images)

Santa Maria has FIVE parishes, Vila do Porto, Santa Barbara, Santo
Espirito, Sao Pedro and the youngest parish is Almagreira, and the periods
within the records are, 1599 to 1906, 1640 to 1906, 1671 to 1906, 1670 to
1906 and 1903 to 1906, respectively. Some parishes are or were mentioned as
Matriz (Matrix), and I believe this is because from all churches in one
Concelho, and I would call it in English, a kind of County, this was the
most important, or the Leading church. As time went by, some of these
places ended up adopting this name as the name of the Parish itself.
Example, Ribeira Grande, where I live, has today a Freguesia named Matriz,
and the Church is Nossa Senhora da Estrela.

Santa Maria Island also has a Matrix Church Padroeira Nossa Senhora da
Assuncao, ans also known as Matriz, and the parish, today Freguesia, is
Vila do Porto. I think I am explaining correctly. All this to say that
researchers here, specially the non native or with very few knowledge of
how these Counties were organized, should keep in mind that its better to
have a good understanding of the Azores Geography and then think about the
names of the churches, because you will find Padroeiras with the same
name in different places inside the same Island, or not, and also in
different islands.

Governmental territory organization is or are, young systems, before church
had a lot of power over it. Many younger Freguesias today, were nothing
but a LOGAR, today written, LUGAR, a word that some of you may have read
hundreds if not thousands of times. These Lugares (places) may very well be
today a Freguesia, and in some cases, you will NOT find any records prior
1911 online because they are in the village next to it, which governed it,
and the record books will tell you that. Example, check Achada - Nordeste
to look for places of Santana - Nordeste, like Feteira, also know as
Feteira Grande and Feteira Pequena, where today is a Freguesia and in the
books, Santana is a parish, or Church's Padroeira. So on, and so on.

I have seen AzoresGenWeb some time ago, and has good info, and I would
suggest also that everyone should start by knowing which Island (we are
nine) is your ancestor coming from, then what Concelho (I would call it
County) then Freguesia and I would call it Parish, then think about the
Padroeiras, those are the Saints' names the people (povo) would choose, for
many endless reason, to baptize the church. And as I wrote before, some
ended being chosen to be the today's name of the Freguesia.

Before you may start correcting me [?] remember please I am not an English
native writer or speaker, I was born and always lived in Azores, so my
apologies for any confused sentence, but please feel free to do so, I am
here to learn.

Regarding CCA, I don't have a clue how they are doing it, but I can
perfectly imagine its a very dedicated job to do. And yes I am also
impatient about Santa Maria, and for all that I have read, I better start
planing new visits to CCA.

can't have 2 freguesias with the same name on the same island.

Instead of discussing it here and how happy we are with the records, I
think we should email the CCA and tell them how we appreciate all their
 hard work: drac...@azores.gov.pt javascript:

And while you are thanking people, you can just hit reply to this email

And as Eileen said, it used to take a very long time to work a line before

The majority of my husband’s family comes from Vila Franca do Campo. The next

that I am ready to see those records come online!

Pam received an email in May. Eliseu translated it.

Taking your request email in mind we inform you that we are in middle of
the process of putting online for individual search the church documents of
the Concelho of Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel, and the church documents of the
Freguesias of Horta, Faial. As soon as we can it will be followed by Graciosa
and Santa Maria. The remaing Concelhos of S. Miguel will follow next.

So in 7 months, they did most of Ponta Delgada and Faial. Then Graciosa (4
freguesias) and Santa Maria (5 or 6 freguesias). Then Ribeiria Grande and
Vila Franca on Sao Miguel. If they do keep at the same pace, maybe they will
 be done in 1 year.

They do seem to be putting the records on faster now that there's a new
 person in charge.

2013-12-15 Thread João Ventura
Cheri,

They're not inconsistent. The problem is yours, actually: you're confusting
the church parish with the freguesia civil (translated roughly as civil
parish). The CCA site uses the official name of the freguesia.. Which in
most cases, as they were created in 1911 as one-to-one mapping of the
church parishes, used the same name of the catholic parish.. In some cases
not, as in this Matriz / São Sebastião case.

It seems to me that in our zeal for family research we are forgetting what it

I am sure that they are doing the best that they can with the resources

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] CCA site

2013-12-14 Thread Cheri Mello
There are 3 CCA threads going. Can we keep them all here?

Pam received an email in May. Eliseu translated it.

Taking your request email in mind we inform you that we are in middle of
the process of putting online for individual search the church documents
of the Concelho of Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel, and the church documents of
the Freguesias of Horta, Faial. As soon as we can it will be followed by
Graciosa and Santa Maria. The remaing Concelhos of S. Miguel will follow
next.

So in 7 months, they did most of Ponta Delgada and Faial. Then Graciosa (4
freguesias) and Santa Maria (5 or 6 freguesias). Then Ribeiria Grande and
Vila Franca on Sao Miguel. If they do keep at the same pace, maybe they
will be done in 1 year.

They do seem to be putting the records on faster now that there's a new
person in charge.

I've been on the site most of the day. Was working fine. I was researching
Terceira. Could it be only Sao Miguel that's not working?

I am on a PC, using Firefox, and I'm accessing it from California. I just
accessed baptisms in S.Miguel, Terceira, and Flores. No problems, no
errors. So it's not the CCA site. Try clearing the cache, cookies, and
whatever else. Try a different browser (Firefox is working for me). The

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] CCA site error?

2013-10-20 Thread Nancy Couto
I had not had problems with the site until just now, when I tried to access
baptismos in Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada. It appears that all, or most, of the
Sao Jose records are inaccessible.

I am able to get into Arrifes and Relva with no problem. So it looks to me
as if only some of the records are inaccessible. I'm hoping this is a
temporary situation. And I'm also hoping that they add the remaining Ponta
Delgada freguesias soon.

Pam, if you can't get into the site at all, you might try unplugging your
router and modem and plugging them in again after about five minutes.

Using a PC with Firefox...in California at 11:18 a.m. PDT...clicked on some
baptism from Lagoa (Rosario) on Sao Miguel. Last time it was a baptism
from R. Quente on S. Miguel.

So, maybe the better question is what are you guys accessing? Maybe only
part of the site is down?

Rather than being critical of the efforts in posting images online, or the
lack of effort as seen by perhaps some of us, we should consider how lucky
we as Azorean researchers are -- Slow though the images may be in their
appearance online, keep in mind the alternative, trips to the Family
History Center and countless hours hovering over film readers. So, let's
be thankful -- this opinion comes from one researcher of Santa Maria Island
where the *only* thing available thus far is the passport information of
islanders going abroad.

I am thankful for what is online and STILL go to the library and view
films. But when there is no copy machine to print the records, and library
doesn't have the correct lenses to view the film, and I have to stand up
and move the film to view the right pages the better option for me is
having the records online.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] CCA site

2013-03-23 Thread Pam Santos
So maybe this past month they are adding the passports. I wish they would
just continue to add records to Sao Miguel, There are other towns in Ponta
Delgada I need also. But Ribeira Grande is probably the most I want since
the lenses at the FHC here I can't read the film, and I would like to know
if my Manuel Furtado Cabral had any siblings!!! I will just have to order
the Vila Franca films.

On Fri, Mar 22, 2013 at 11:10 PM, Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com wrote:

They seem to be doing the councils in alphabetical order, so I would think
that Vila Franca would be last. Unless they feel like jumping to
Graciosa. Just because they feel like it.

When I broke my leg in March of 2007 (hard to forget that one!), I was
literally laid up on a couch with my leg elevated. Daytime television is
really boring. So I played around on the Internet a lot. I think the
CCA had migrated to the 2nd site then (they are now on their 3rd site).
They had the Passaportes for early Terceira up (typed up by Joao Ventura,
the archivist, and his assistants) and I think Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel
was up to about 1900 or so. Today (March 2013), they have taken down
Terceira and they have Ponta Delgada up to 1939. Horta has never been
online. And it's been 6 years! I don't understand the rhyme or reason.
