Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Empty March

2017-05-20 Thread 'John Raposo' via Azores Genealogy
Lent and Easter were "closed" seasons in the church. That meant that except for
special circumstances, e.g. the bride was pregnant, the groom was going off to
war and wanted to marry the woman who could potentially be carrying his child,
etc, etc, marriages were not performed. I remember that as an altar boy before
Vatican II, I would note that marriages in the Lenten and Advent seasons were
very quiet, low-keyed affairs. I knew of one case where the bride and groom had
to apply to the Bishop for permission to marry in Advent; he was about to go
off to war. Permission was granted.

I hope this helps.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Empty March

2017-05-20 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Lent is a time of penance and abstinence. With marriages being a celebration
the church viewed it as a distraction of the season. Marriages were performed
during lint were not blessed until after lent had ended. There is a formula as
to when lent is and it is based on the first full moon in spring which is
Passover. The Sunday before Passover is Palm Sunday and you go back 40 days and
you have Ash Wednesday which is the first day of lent. It is possible to have
marriages in the first few weeks of March and not be in Lent.

I have some March marriages. You'd have to check with someone who is good on
Catholic Church history...I think it has something to do with Lent.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Empty March

2017-05-20 Thread Joanne Mercier
Catholic Church tradition has discouraged weddings in Advent (December) and
Lent (Feb/March or March/April) because of the penitential nature of the
seasons. Some priests are more strict than others but there is not outright
prohibition during these times. The only time in the Catholic Church where
NO sacraments are celebrated are on Good Friday & Holy Saturday.

I don't really know either but just feel that Cheri is right with it being
Lent. I feel like even I learned that in Catholic school when I was young
People waited until after Easter. My grandma used to also say that most did not
marry in August because that was the month of "sorrows". This just came to me
and wonder if anyone else heard of this. My grandparents did get married in
August:)
