[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bennett surname--and interesting story

2009-05-20 Thread eric edgar

The Bennett surname may have evolved from an alcunha(nickname). My
wife's Madeiran family has a relative everyone called " benetta"
because he always wore a distinctive kind of hat that was called a
benetta. This became his name and no one remembers his real name.

We are playing a song this year with the name "Sao Bento" in the title. I
asked "Saint who?" The native speakers told me Benedict, as in the Pope's

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bennett surname--and interesting story

2009-05-03 Thread Eugenia

Mary,

It is possible the surname BENNETT is apart of BETTENCOURT. Need to
show the surname from father BETTENCOURT to son BENNETT.

I hope the following information helps with your research.

Eugenia

I check my database on Portuguese Names and Their Meanings on
BETTENCOURT and found the following:

Bettencourt -

The name has a Armorial.

Bettencourt - Change to Perdomo. Family name, origin, France.
  Information is from the book:
James H. Guill, A HISTORY OF THE AZORES ISLANDS, Golden Shield
International, Tulare, CA., Vol. 5, 1993, page 225.

  History of the Bettencourt Family:
In the battle of Agincourt, the English side lost about 100 men; the
French lsot at least 7,000. Among the numerous French dead lay nearly
the entire family of Bettencourt.
The home, estate and manor of the Bethencourt family, in Picardy,
France, in the region of Caux, not far from the site of the battle of
Agincourt. The Family served as councillors to the King, bailiff of
Amiens (Arms), and held other positions.
Jean de Bethencourt (1360-1425), accompanied by two of his nephews,
Henri and Maciot, and entered the service of Enrique III of Castille.
Basing his claims on a papal grant of the Canary Islands to a
Castillian Prince, Luiz de la Cerda, King Enrique had commissioned
Bethencourt to conquer the inhabited islands and to govern them in the
name of Castille.
By 1402 Jean de Bethencourt, controlled the Canary Islands. He
brought French families with him. He died at Grainville la
Teinturière, France.
Henry of Portugal, purchased the island of Lançarote from Maciot
Bethencourt. Henry of Portugal, gave Maciot Bethencourt, property on
the island of Madeira. Macoit Bethencourt, moved to Madeira, where he
found the Portuguese Bettencourt lineage. Some of the Bettencourt
family settle in the Azores.
Henri Bethencourt, came to the Azores as the Avila Bettencourt
family. Some of the family uses the name Avila.
Archipelago of Madeira, Heads of Families: 1420-1450 shows the
following Bettencourts:
  Gaspar de Bettencourt
  Henrique de Bettencourt
  Maciót de Bettencourt
Bettencourt - Carlos Bettencourt Leça Faria, Director of the Mulemba
Observatory near Luanda, Angola. Director Faria, was the first to
detect the existence on orbit of the world's first man-made satellite,
Sputnik I.
  Information is from the book:
James H. Guill, A HISTORY OF THE AZORES ISLANDS, Golden Shield
International, Tulare, CA., Vol. 5, 1993, page 34-35, 113-116, 134.

Bettencourt (Bettencut) - is a family name of a early Portuguese
immigrant in California.
  Information is from:
Carlos Almeida, PORTUGUESE IMMIGRANTS, Published by: The Supreme
Council of U.P.E.C., San Leandro, CA,1978, page 268

It usually meant that the person couldn't write. Many people couldn't
write much but could manage their own name. Manuel could sign his own
name but John couldn't. Manuel was the witness for John and also for 4
others.

I was interested in this because I have Azorean ancestors who married
resident Englishment . Their English names were genuine and not
anglicised. That may be a possibility as well.

But then again , have you seen this site?

It mentions naturalization records for John Bennett and Manuel Bennett
of Portugal dated August 1892 - a lot of the Portuguese have
anglicised at least their first names.

Anyone have a guess about what Portuguese name the surname Bennett might have
come from? Bettencourt perhaps?

Here's the story of today's discovery:

I just found a missing cousin who is buried in St. Anthony's Cemetery in
Pescadero California (on the coast south of Half Moon Bay). Her mother and aunt
were sisters of my great grandmother. I knew what happened to all the cousins
except Rosa--I did not know who she had married or where she went and despaired
of ever finding out!

I found her parent's graves in the cemetery today, and alongside, in the family
plot, was "Rose Bennett". The birth year was correct, so I figured this must be
the missing Rosa. When I checked the census records I found Rosa and Manuel
Bennett living right next door to her parents in Pescadero in 1930! I had
looked at the record many times, since another sister was actually living with
the parents at the time and there she was, right under my nose. Rosa's husband,
Manuel Bennett, was born in California but his parents are listed as from the
Azores. There were other Bennetts from the Azores in Pescadero at the time,
too.

Anyway, I thought this tale might give hope to those who have lost the trail. I
don't know why I didn't check this cemetery before--I guess I wasn't certain
that the family had remained in the area.
