Maria Rodrigues is a mistake of the book Nobiliairio da Ilha Terceira (they 
are a lot of mistake in this book). Catarina Gonçalves is in the testamento 
of Catarina Evangelho (Rute Dias Gregório, Terra e fortuna nos primordios 
da ilha Terceira 1450-1550, tome II , p. 686-688). This book is on line :

B – Mécia de Anes de Andrade : Her son, Gaspar Gonçalves Machado « da 
Ribeira Seca », is the first child born in the Terceira Island  : “Gonçalo 
Annes devia de ser de pouco tempo casado, porque se diz que Mecia Annes 
vieira pejada com Gaspar Gonçalves, seu primogenito” (Anaes a Ilha Terceira 
- AIT, Vol I, p. 39)

 

C – Wife o Pedro de Barcelos. Her complete name is “Inês Gonçalves Machado 
da Ribeira Seca”, as her brother Gaspar Machado da Ribeira Seca : “Em 
memoria e honra de seu pai, que viveu naquelle sitio, mandou que os 
administradores da capella se chamassem - da Ribeira Sécca” (AIT, Vol. I, 
p. 43)

 

D – Marcos de Barcelos : they are a few of Marcos de Barcelos :

- Marcos de Barcelos Machado married with Branca Gomes, parents 
of Catarina Evangelho de Lima married on 1587, 22 januray in Praia (see 
Paria, casamentos 1585-1592, ph .10)? This Marcos is maior son of Diogo de 
Barcelos Machado e de Catarina Evangelho  (Rute Dias Gregorio; p. 665-666, 
testamento de Diogo de Barcelos)

- Marcos de Barcelos married with Maria Lopes filha de Afonso 
Lopes e de Maria (or Catarina) Rodrigues (Frei Diogo da Chagas, Espelh 
Cristalino, p. 403-404). They are not the Marcos parents. A son of Marcos 
and Maria, Baltazar Machado de Barcelos married in Praia (26-09-1580) with 
Joana Godinho Ledesma (sam source). Maria de Barcelos de Ledesma, daughter 
of Baltazar e Joana, married with her  “primo irmao” Diogo de Barcelos 
Evangelho (same source). Then, Marcos de Barcelos married with Maria Lopes, 
woul be the son of Manoel de Barcelos and Beatriz Evangelho, and irmão de 
Manoel de Barcelos Evangelho married with Leonor Teixeira, theses parents 
of Diogo married with Maria de Barcelos Ledesma.

Hi Joao,

Antonio da Fonseca Saraiva and Catarina Escoto are my ancestors (8xGGPs) 
through their daughter Maria da Fonseca.  I have her marriage record, and  
I''ve also found a marriage record for their son, Sebastiao.  That is all I 
have for that line so far.  I think the links are all in this thread, but 
if-- or when-- I find more I'd be very happy to share those links too, if 
you don't have them already.

Good Morning Philippe, I have been looking at your correspondence with
Linda and realized that I have some of those lines but my information is a
little different. It appears that you have done a lot of research on this
line and the information you provided is very interesting. I'm concerned
about where I have different information then you:
A)  I have the wife of #42 Rui Dias Evangelho as Maria Rodrigues not
Catarina Evangelho. I also have Rui Dias Evangelho being born in Beira but
you indicate that he was born Sao Sebastiao, Terceira. Rui Dias Evangelho
married to Maria Rodrigues is my 12th Great Grandparents three times
through my Coelho Berbereia de Ormonde lines of Altares and Raminho, my
13th GG through the same lines and my 14th GG through my Caetano do Canto
lines of Ribeirinha. Since they in my tree 5 times I would like to make
sure I have the correct information. Is this a another spouse for Rui Dias
Evangelho? Can you help me sort this out?
B) I think I'm reading the information wrong on the following- you have
Mecia Anes de Andrade being born in Sao Sebastiao, Terceira but then she
is the first woman to give birth in the Azores (on a boat off the island of
Terceira)? or is she the child that was born off the island of Terceira?
C) You have #41 Ines Goncalves Machado, born in Santa Cruz, Terceira as the
wife of Pedro de Barcelos. I have Ines G. Seca. Could this person be the
same person or is it another spouse for Pedro de Barcelos? and
D) You have #10 Marcos de Barcelos Machado (born in Santa Cruz, Terceira)
married to Branca Gomes de Lima. I have Marcos de Barcelos Machado (died
3/3/1579 in Santa Cruz, Terceira) married to Maria Lopes Homem.  They are
my 10th GG three times and my 11th GG once through the Berbereia lines. Did
Marcos de Barcelos Machado have another wife?

"BARCELOS FAMILY: Besides the Corte Reais there were several other families 
from the Island of Terceira 

who were interested in the exploration and colonization of Newfoundland. 
One of the most important was the 

Barcelos family which worked on colonization for three generations.

Pedro Pinheiro, descendant of one of the most noble families of Barcelos 
(Town — North of Oporto) migrated 

to Terceira in the last quarter of the 15th Century. (Because of his name 
Pinheiro (Pine) his family coat of arms 

contained a pine tree and golden pinecones.) In Terceira he was nicknamed 
Barcelos which later became part of 

his name.

Under a charter granted by King John II (1492), Pedro Pinheiro de Barcelos 
made his first voyage to 

Newfoundland with his partner, João Fernandes Labrador (who gave the name 
to Labrador). When Pedro 

Pinheiro died in 1507, his son Diogo Pinheiro de Barcelos obtained from 
King Manuel I a charter (1508) 

allowing him to continue with the colonization begun by his father. Dr. 
Baptista de Lima of the Historical 

Institute of the Island of Terceira, revealed at the first International 
Congress of the History of the Discoveries 

(1960) important findings concerning Diogo’s colonization of the Barcelona 
Island (Sable Island) — named 

after Barcelos family.

Diogo had a brother, Afonso Pinheiro de Barcelos, who, according to the 
charter granted to them by the King, 

had equal rights (profits) and duties (expenses) in the colonization of the 
lands of Bacalhaus. However, because 

Afonso was not willing to participate in any of the expeditions, Diogo 
asked for a legal hearing on the matter so 

that he could obtain sole rights to the lands he had colonized. Five
