Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Freitas Mendonca Flores ancestors
Hello David, After many years of no progress, I've only recently had a few breakthroughs and was able to determine which island my gg grandfather came from. I'm still very new to Azores research and I am having a little trouble reading scanned documents in Portuguese. Many of the names and locations you mention seem close to the names and locations I have found so far. I'll keep at it. We could be distant cousins. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Freitas Mendonca Flores ancestors
Hi Wendy, from my maternal grandfather's paternal line I have a Joao Antonio de Freitas Mendonca from Lajes on Flores. He was born 1812 and died 1868. His parents were Manuel de Freitas Mendonca, born 1785 Fajazinha, Flores and died 1853. His wife was Maria de Sao Jose. Manuel's parents were Jose Mendonca, born 1757 in Fajazinha, Flores, and died 1807, and Ana de Freitas, born 1766 in Fajazinha, Flores. This is where the Mendonca line switches to the Island of Corvo. Jose Mendonca's parents were Antonio de Mendonca, born 1727 on Corvo and died 1786 in Fajazinha, Flores, and Francisca Roiz, born 1731 in Fajazinha,Flores. Ana de Freitas (wife of Jose Mendonca) parents were Francisco Jose and Esperanca de Freitas, both from Fajazinha, Flores. Do you have any of these names in your tree? Also, does your Mendonca or Freitas line link to the Island of Corvo? I believe the furthest I could go back on the Mendonca line was with Gaspar de Mendonca, born abt 1630 in Corvo and died 1689 in Corvo, and his wife Barbara Roiz, born abt 1640 in Corvo and died 1692 in Corvo. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Freitas Mendonca Flores ancestors
Hi Wendy, I'm new to FTDNA, but it looks like you and your grandmother match my mom and me. Two of my mom's grandparents were born on Flores, and I have their lines sketched out to about the mid 1700's/early 1800's. Our connection might be beyond the range of the existing records, but I'm happy to help look for a connection. We have Mendonca and Freitas, among other names, in our tree too. If you haven't already got the Flores/Corvo marriage book, I highly recommend it: https://www.amazon.com/Casais-das-Flores-Corvo-Portuguese-ebook/dp/B00AQAOOF6 It's a searchable index of all the marriage records from the two islands. You can use it to cut down some of the record slogging and to put together a good provisional tree fairly quickly. cheers, Linda Meneses On Monday, January 2, 2017 at 2:18:50 PM UTC-8, WPederson wrote: > > After having my gandmother and dad do DNA testing through FamilyTreeDNA, I > was able to narrow down my Azorean ancestors to the island of Flores. > Since then I have found a previously undiscovered 1880 census (Murray, > Alameda, California) for my gg grandfather Jose Freitas Mendonca (was > incorrectly transcribed as Mundunco) that shows he was from Flores.
