Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: More Villages Online Now - Azorean Gravestone Project

2017-03-01 Thread Marilyn Thompson
I asked the date of the map because I was told that the area that my great
grandparents came from had fallen into the ocean. They were from Salto
Verde. I see Faja do Salto Verde on the Northern coastline. It is just west
of the second longitude line from the lower end of the island.

I know when we were there in 2001 a fellow was telling us that to hike
there was very difficult because the trail was very narrow and steep. We
did not do the hike. I also do not have any idea when that was supposed to
have happened.

Wow, beautifully detailed map! I have been looking for one like that of Sao

buy one at the time.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: More Villages Online Now - Azorean Gravestone Project

2017-02-17 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Well,

Since I have been spending the time to try and get the tombstones online
for the Azores, I thought of the idea that it would be super easy if I just
reached out to the source directly.
So I contacted either the cemetery (if it was big enough that I could find
the email address of a specific person to contact) or the Council itself.

I got a great many replies to my query about what their current exhumation
period / burial duration was and whether or not they would be willing to
send copies of cemetery records, and I explained what I was doing with it.
It seems sometimes the Council sets an exhumation dates, and sometimes its
just the individual church: very locality specific. Anyways, several of
them actually sent me rosters of all the people that have been interred in
recent years that they had computerized, and rosters of people whose
remains were 'set for exhumation' (unless the family takes action), one had
the records in an excel going back a hundred years, and other
charts/diagrams that they had and were willing to share. Of course, most
of my queries went unanswered, but I did get alot of data, and information
out of it. Only one actually responded with a decline to provide info, the
rest were extraordinarily helpful. That is how I put together the ranges I
previously posted...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: More Villages Online Now - Azorean Gravestone Project

2017-02-17 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
DURATION OF INTERNMENT BEFORE EXHUMATION:

THIS IS FROM 2017

Sao Miguel Council de Ponta Delgada, (and it looks like pretty much the
rest of the island): extended to 30 Years death
Pico, Graciosa, Faial: extended to 30 Years after death in some
juristictions, or dependent upon "Families need for space in their
designated lot" in others
Flores: dependent upon "Families need for space in their designated lot"
(MANY GRAVES EXIST ON FLORES AND CORVO FROM 19th CENTURY. MORE SO THAN ANY
OTHER ISLANDS)
Sao Jorge Councils de Calheta e Velas: dependent upon "Families need for
space in their designated lot"

It appears that the "7 years" commonly discussed here is no longer in
effect.

In Sao Miguel for example, I have been informaed that people who died in
1987 are presently being exhumed, and the graves being re-opened.

Thought this may interest some.

Great. Work,Jeremy. One question.. What if the death record says "buried in a
public cemetery which I assume there were no funds for the burial. I would
assume a cemetery close to church they are buried from??

Would there be a record of that??
