Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Immigrating to the U.S.... govt records
Hi Cheri, Thanks for that find - I'll look further into it and see what I can find. It's been difficult, as I'm having a hard time finding any vital records later on in New Bedford (or Massachusetts) for any of them passed a certain point, so I'm wondering what happened to them after that. Claudina is unusual enough that I would think it would be easy to track her better. But that's a good start to go look there. Shirley - they're all from Ribiera Quente. Elaine, They went to meet the brother of Claudina, Francisco Silva, 317 S. Front St, New Bedford? It looks like baby Francisco died on the way. Yeah, he was in the right month, with the right ship, just off on the year. It happens. If all the family members are correct, then it's him. You can search for the arrival in America a couple of weeks after. Although I just start looking in America on the next day, as I don't want to miss them. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Immigrating to the U.S.... govt records
I have a gazillion MELLOs. Was he from Sao Miguel island? Shirley in CA - Original Message - From: Elaine Mello To: Azores Genealogy Sent: Friday, June 22, 2018 5:47 PM Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Immigrating to the U.S govt records So, after almost 2 years of trying to get information from the USCIS for my paternal grandfather, Antonio Mello, I came home to find a CD from the USCIS - I was so excited! Then I put it in the computer, and found two PDFs - one which was a cover letter saying that they couldn't find any further records and that they were refunding me my money (though check that it actually gets refunded, just in case they forget...) and a secondary sheet with some very basic information, which is part of the application that they had. So Antonio declared that he arrived April 18, 1901 on the S.S. Donna Maria into New York, which meant he was about 12 at the time. He also declared he entered as Antonio Mello. So I looked up the ship records, and can only find one Antonio Francis, aged 13, which may or may not be him. So, is it unusual for people to get this wrong when filling out these forms, or are the records I've found online of immigrants incomplete? I'm checking with the Justice Archives in Massachusetts to see if there is something at the state level since the federal government was such a disappointment (though they said I could try again as they are always searching for missing records, but that sounds more like looking for a needle in a haystack.) Thanks - I didn't think about being held at Ellis, and will look further into that. But I thought I found the passports for the family in 1902 - the link doesn't seem to be working at the moment, but this is it here: http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1900-1902/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1900-1902_item1/P113.html As it lists the whole family, I'm assuming he was mistaken on the arrival date. Start with April 12, 1901 (he may have been a little sick and not released from the Ellis Island hospital until the 18th), then April 28th, 1900. See if one of those two turn him up. Are you trying to find his freguesia? Did you check the Azorean Passaportes LEAVING the Azores?
