 BUT, that freguesia has 2 churches: Sao Miguel Arcanjo and Sao Pedro.
 Then Shirley codes everything and doesn't use the full church name.

 I don't know how you would ascertain which church. I'd need to see the
 record that lists Antonio Miguel Furtado and Maria do Rosaris Luiz. I'm
 guessing it was someone's baptism.

 In the meantime, I'll just have to pretend you somehow know the church is
 Sao Miguel Arcanjo.
 1) Go to the CCA: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/
 2) Point the fingertip at the council of Vila Franca and left click once.
 3) Next page should have Ilha: Sao Miguel and Concelho: Vila Franco do
 Campo filled in. If it doesn't, change it. Then from the drop down, chose
 Matriz de Sao Miguel (even though those words never appear anywhere in
 the church records of Sao Miguel Arcanjo). Click the round Casamento
 button and then finally click Procurar.
 4) Scroll down if necessary to where you see the years containing 1896.
 So that's the 1895-1899 link. Click Ver (to see) to see it.
 5) You are in luck these are grouped by years. Start at page 1 of 1896
 looking for Antonio Miguel Furtado and Maria do Rosario.

 Good luck!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage record finding and translation

2014-03-27 Thread João Ventura
Hi Cheri,

That 'freguesia' certainly does NOT have two churches.

In Vila Franca (town) there are the following freguesias:
- São Miguel, VFC (Freguesia); Vila Franca do Campo
(Concelho/Municipality); São Miguel (Island); Açores (Region); Portugal
(Country)*: http://tombo.pt/f/vfc03
- São Pedro, VFC (Freguesia); Vila Franca do Campo (Concelho/Municipality);
São Miguel (Island); Açores (Region); Portugal
(Country)*: http://tombo.pt/f/vfc04

There are others freguesias in that concelho, but they correspond to other
villages.

I know that this can be confusing, and indeed in the CCA there are actually
books from multiple churches in the same freguesia:
- Ginetes, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Açores: http://tombo.pt/f/pdl09 -
notice the three 1904-1911 books for Varzea (this one shows up in the CCA
is a distinct freguesia - but it never was)
- Santa Cruz, Praia da Vitória, Terceira: http://tombo.pt/f/vpv08 - this
one is harder, but there's a couple of burial books for 'Casa da Ribeira',
see 1695-1759 and 1813-1833 (CCA hides these books under the main
freguesia).

Except for the exceptions (which should indeed be noted), in the Azores up
to now it is sufficient to indicate the freguesia (NOT the town), concelho
and island. Of course we could then go into the dillemma of using the
patron saint/church name or the 'civil parish' name. That, I leave as an
exercise to the reader, as not even the CCA seems to be following a uniform
system there.

Regards,

João Ventura

Your welcome. I am not sure I have not tracked down the siblings of my
kids ancestor who migrated to Hawaii. He was from SM Vila Franca do Campo.
I have had on another line where two siblings came to hawaii and the other
four went to Massachusettes. Eventually will see where the siblings ended
up at.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage record finding and translation

2014-03-26 Thread Cheri Mello
Todd,

This is where it gets weird. After my Salt Lake Conference, I have about 8
researchers willing to work on a standardization for us. We are all over
the place.

You initially posted with freguesia, island, region, country:
Antonio Miguel Furtado
Birth 1873 in Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel, Açores, PT
Marriage to Maria do Rosario Luiz: 1896 about Age: 23, Vila Franca do
Campo, São Miguel, Açores, PT

Maria do Rosario Luiz
Birth 1875 in Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel, Açores, PT
==
BUT, that freguesia has 2 churches: Sao Miguel Arcanjo and Sao Pedro. Then
Shirley codes everything and doesn't use the full church name.

So
that's the 1895-1899 link. Click Ver (to see) to see it.
5) You are in luck these are grouped by years. Start at page 1 of 1896
looking for Antonio Miguel Furtado and Maria do Rosario.

Good luck!
Cheri

How do you read the dates on the pages, they must be written in longhand?
If I could read the years I could find them a lot easier.

 Since you're my cousin, go back and duplicate some of my research. For
 example, look for Victorino de Mello and Maria Joaquina (or whatever name
 she married under). See if you can find that record and post it. Find a
 few others. Then jump into the unchartered territory. You'll be surprised
 at how much your reading has increased.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Marriage record finding and translation

2014-03-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Yes, they are written out longhand. Every once in a while though, you'll
find a priest that will write 1809 at the beginning of those records.
mil = 1000
novocentos = 900
oitocentos = 800
noventa = 90
oitenta = 80
setenta = 70
sesenta = 60
cinquenta = 50
quarenta = 40
trinta = 30
vinte = 20

For a complete list, go to the Azores Genweb and click on the first link:
http://goo.gl/mWi4rq

I think the numbers are on the last page or 2nd to the last page.

The numbers seem to be the last thing that people get. And it doesn't help
that oitocentos can be written as oito centos. Or oi tocentos. Depends on
when they went back to dip the pen in the ink. And 50 can be spelled
or rather, misspelled so many ways.

It takes some practice and a lot of patience to get it, but you will get it.

We plan on spending lots of time helping people with the handwriting at our
conference.
Good luck,
Cheri
