Liz, although people of various nationalities can be found in Portugal and its dominions - as with other countries; having said that, *no, DuPont is not a Portuguese surname. *The Portuguese equivalent of DuPont is da Ponte. I have to agree with John, in that, if a person of Portuguese extraction is using the surname Pine then he is most likely to have anglicized the surname Pinheiro, which literally translates to Pine. Beyond that, both Cheri and I share a few Portuguese ancestors who had Pine *added* to their traditional Mello surname. Their numbers however, would few and far between. PINÉ not PINE!!! PINÉ is the portuguese word for day “thief” (The Milhafre bird is a day “thief”. Hunts on the day light). The word PINÉ (not pine) also means brasilian plant tiritica (Tinunculus sparvernis). This word is of “brasilian” usage. The ones who carry this word as a surname most likely had it because they had been immigrated in Brasil or… :) Please be aware of the diacritics. Eliseu, I don't know that Dano types with diacritics. I know he meant Piné and not Pine (as in the tree). Interesting point about the Piné name. As far as I know (in my research) the Mello Pinés stayed in Ribeira Quente until they left for America. I don't know of any that went to Brasil and back to São Miguel, but I haven't researched every single one of them either. As far as I can tell, we Mellos started to take over the freguesia so they started compounding the surname or adding an alcunha to differentiate themselves from one another (wy too many Manuel de Mellos in that freguesia!) It's Joao. See the accent above Joao in the marriage record. That's the way the priest did his accents. It is identical the Roiz for Rodrigues. What I read from the marriage is: Pedro de Faria son of Pedro [Joao/Goas] and his wife Maria Pereira. I'm not sure is the last name is an abbreviation or just Joao. The ancestor is Alferes Pedro de Faria (b. ~1729 d. 18-Apr-1784) married to Rita Maria Andrade. I found a Pedro born on 17/19 Jan 1729 son of Pedro Goncalves(z) and Maria de Freitas which falls within his birth range however there is a discrepancy with the parents names. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name help
It's Joao. See the accent above Joao in the marriage record. That's the way the priest did his accents. It is identical the Roiz for Rodrigues. And note that J is identical to the J in Jose, in the record below. There is an name Goas or Gois or Goias, etc, but this looks like Joao, Very clear. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name help
I don't see the discrepancy. Pedro Joao Gonsalves could also use Faria alternately with Gonsalves, or the name may have come from his wife, Maria Pereira. Note that the godparent, Joao Pereira da Costa may be related to Maria Pereira. If there are no other possible matches, this is likely the person you want. Better still, make your search easy and look for the marriage of the parents of Pedro Joao and Maria Pereira.and Manuel de Andrade Miranda and Maria Roiz. It could save you a lot of work and reveal which family uses the Faria name. JR On Sunday, April 27, 2014 6:12:07 PM UTC-4, JR wrote: It's Joao. See the accent above Joao in the marriage record.
