The CCA tells me they have already had the idea to contact the Mormons in order to have the microfilms scanned for their purposes, but they are having trouble making contact.I believe there are some LDS people on this list who might be able to facilitate the CCA making the right contacts to get this accomplished. So if anyone knows the right contacts at the LDS and can send me their emails privately, I will pass on the information immediately to the right CCA people.Obrigado,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

I asked the CCA why they haven't yet uploaded the rest of the records for Conceição, Horta and got this terrible news: The early baptisms and marriages records of Conceição, Horta, were not scanned because of its bad condition caused by the use of the ink ferrogálica, as we say in Portuguese. This ink destroyed the paper. I gave them the idea, in case they hadn't yet thought of it themselves, that they can scan the Mormon microfilms at least to have something online. So until they do something else about it, the earliest records for Conceição are only available on LDS film.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Conceição, Horta records online

2013-11-15 Thread João Ventura
Hi Doug,

You mean the ones listed
here: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/381603 ?

Batismos 1750-1881 Family History Library International Film 1330078
Batismos 1882-1890 Reconhecimentos de filiação 1876-1898 Family History
Library International Film 1330079 Item 1
Casamentos 1705-1874 Family History Library International Film 1330079
Items 2-3
Óbitos 1724-1866 Family History Library International Film 1330079 Items 4-5

The only difference between this list and the one on CCA is that there's a
marriages span between 1705-1840 that hasn't been made available. They
might be referring to even earlier birth records. From my snapshot of their
catalogue, the ones missing are:

Births: 1705-1750 (NOT in the film)
Marriages: 1705-1840 (this is indeed in the LDS microfilm)

I believe they're referring to these two books, and their special
digitization needs. Let's hope for the best on those...

( I forgot link in previous email)

On the left hand side is the marriage of Antonio de Lima and Francisca Roza
 February 1765.

Does the note in the margin give any indication of franciscas death. (I
knew he remarried. )There are a couple of words before the date. I guess
if that is the death date, then they were only married 3 months. Wow! Sad.

I thought it says he's from the parish of Ns das Neves. But it mentions
Riveiro Grande and I'm wondering if I'm missing some important clue. (?)

Here's a case I learned about on this list regarding no rhyme or reason to
last names. His name was Antonio de Lima but his father was Manoel de
 Souza
and his mother was Izabel de Lima. So he took her name. (Eventually the
 De
Lima name was kept.) maybe I'm getting back far enough that I'll connect
 with someone.

 Thanks for your help

However, I swear I remember using earlier Conceicao records of baptisms before 1700 that were on LDS films. I think they started about the 1670s time frame. But I don't have quick access to my notes that I compiled for all Azores records on LDS film. I might be confusing Conceicao with Angustias, come to think of it.If there are any Conceicao researchers who have quick access to the information, please let me know. In any case, at least we can expect to see the available casamentos you mentioned. Is you article Gateways to Royalty written in English or Portuguese?

On Thu, Nov 14, 2013 at 11:43 PM, p...@dholmes.com wrote:

 Hi Freddy,

Maybe you got some private replies, but I know many people would love to
have your luck in having some ancestors so well documented as to go back
 over a thousand years.

You already got some help with the Minho website. Just verify each record
as you go, because it's full of bad assumptions as to parentage, especially
in some of the oldest generations on Faial in Cedros and places where they
have only baptisms, but no marriages to support them. Some lines are just
 wishful thinking.

John Raposo quoted some of your ancestry from the book by Forjaz and
Mendes about the four islands in the Horta district. I don't know whether
that has some additional links I haven't found myself. But much of that is
also mentioned in an older nobility book about Faial families, called
Familias Faialenses. That is available online these days - all in
Portuguese, of course, but I believe you are fluent in that.

For the oldest generations beyond the Azores, turn to Felgueiras Gayo, a
genealogist from the 1700s, if I recall. He wrote many volumes on the noble
families of Portugal and you can get back to all the European royalty
there. It might also be online.

But to answer your exact question, yes you have documented ancestral lines
that go back to Guilherme da Silveira of Flanders (Willem van der Hagen).
It comes from your Vilalobos line, that branches off to Marramaque and then
 to Willem vdH.

If you follow your Peixoto lines, you will find they get back to some
 Kings of Aragon.
On your Carvalho line, it goes back to more kings of Navarre, Leon and
 elsewhere.

I once wrote an article called Gateways to Royalty and I think I have some
 additional specifics:

That will occupy at least the next 6 months of your free time. :-)

2013-11-15 Thread pico
OK, Freddy.I'm answering through the list and John Raposo will see your thank you now.As to trusting GeneALL, it's like anything else. Don't trust them with your life, but use the information as a guideline and then try to track down where they got their sources. The good thing about them is they do quote sources, such as books used for the information. But they do have mistakes, too. Sometimes you get a conflicting connection but it's also because two books say two different things. In all cases, you must use judgement. I find it helpful to estimate dates of birth and marriage whenever possible with all these nobility books. They sometimes quote a date for a will or date when the king granted a favor. So you should pull out a reference showing all the kings of Portugal to see when they reigned and you will have a better idea when something happened. Sometimes they say someone participated in a certain famous battle, so then you look up the date of that battle to follow along and keep the time frame straight. As to the value to you in ordering the Quatro Ilhas books by Forjaz and Mendes, I can tell you that for me, they are valuable. But for you, I am not sure they would be. How many Flores and Corvo ancestors have you got? Maybe none. And aside from your Vilalobos and Peixoto lines from Faial, how many Faial families interest you? There are chapters that will have a few generations that contain your ancestors and maybe not much more than that. Paying all that for a few branches? Just depends on your interest level. And actually, I don't even know if they are still available. I got mine a few years ago when they were first published. And I had my friend in Lisboa make all the arrangements to avoid the same scam they pulled on me for their Terceira volumes that never arrived. I was taking no such chances like that again.Remember, most every fact they got from either another nobility book or manuscript that is available either by the CCA or elsewhere online. Most of your ancestors are beyond the records of the church. And those that you are able to document by church records are things you can do yourself and don't depend on what the book says. But there is also plenty of interesting new research they did. For example, they mention things they found at the Torre do Tombo (the Portuguese National Archives in Lisboa) that often add some meat to the skeletal information of the oldest ancestors. Whether things found like that exist for your own lines, I would have to study more those chapters. For most people, these are great references that a library should have and where you can go and extract those little bits of information that apply to you. You might actually find that a good library in Toronto already has the set. Check it out. Or maybe get them to buy a set if they are still available. Or maybe there is a genealogy group that got a copy for their members. That would not surprise me.If you get more serious about your oldest ancestors and their relation to the times in which they lived, you will also want to get a hold of books by other Azorean priests and genealogists. There are books like Saudades da Terra that are full of information. They are often quoted by generations of genealogists that followed. It's very out of date, but I did one time start to compile some of these reference titles and put them on my website. I think I call it the Portuguese Genealogy Library. Most good references are in the Portuguese language, but a good one in English is James Guill's Volume 5 History of the Azores Islands, now long out of print. I describe it on my website somewhere. Many libraries have copies.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with info on IES Hall, East San Jose

2013-11-15 Thread Marie Vierra
Hi,

The IES Hall in East San Jose will be celebrating it's 100th anniversary
next year, and there will be a book published on it's history as well.
Unfortunately, there was a fire in the 1990s which distroyed records from
the 1930s-1950s. The authors have compiled some info during this time
period, but would like to ask for help in acquiring as much info as
possible. Specfically:

- any queens (images and information)
- IES Presidents (images and information)
- images of the IES (interior and exterior) between 1945-1959

If you have any information between 1930s-1950s, it will be greatly
appreciated.

Please email me directly:
island.family.t...@gmail.comisland.family.t...@gmail.com

Many thanks.

Sheri,

The left record is for a Joao Frias and a Maria Moniz. I hope that is what
you meant.

The groom's mother is Izabel Furtado. The bride's mother is Maria de
Ascenpao? It's Assumption in Portuguese. I'm not sure of the spelling and
if the scribe spelled it right, but I'm pretty sure I know what he means.
I'm sure someone else will confirm the Assumption part or not.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Links to other Flamengos records?

Thanks to another member of the list who posted a link, I was able to click

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-FLAMENGOS-C-1860-1891/FAL-HT-FLAMENGOS-C-1860-1891_item1/

What I cannot figure out is how I can now move to other Flamengos records
such as births and deaths. If I trimthe URL to try to get to a main
directory, I get an error message. The only thing I can do is go to the
domain name, but then I cannot figure out what to click to find what I want.

Does anyone know how I can drill down from the homepage of Culturacores and
get to the volumes I'd like to look at?

When someone clicked on Matches, it used to show Close and Immediate and
if you didn't have any, it took 5 seconds to go to Show All. So now,
Show All is the default.
