Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] D'Aubigne or Dabney Family of Fayal, Azores

K, do you know about the book "On the Edge of History," by Joseph C. Abdo?
The first chapter includes a mention of the Huguenot leader Agrippa
d'Aubigne. The author states that the brothers Cornelius, John, and Robert
d'Aubigne fled to Britain to escape religious persecution. Cornelius and
John later left for Virginia and changed the family name to Dabney. Robert
went to Boston. Robert's great-grandson John Bass Dabney is the main focus
of Abdo's account, and a family tree of his descendants is included. I
don't believe Cornelius's descendants are mentioned. But, if you are
interested in the account, Amazon is selling the book in an expensive
paperback edition and a very reasonably priced Kindle edition. Also, there
are apparently used copies available.

Since your ancestor immigrated to Virginia sometime between 1715 and 1717,
you might be able to find information on him through Ancestry.com or one of
the other genealogy sites. There's a lot of information available on
Colonial Virginia.

Good luck.
Nancy

[AZORES-Genealogy] D'Aubigne or Dabney Family of Fayal, Azores

2018-04-16 Thread starvingatafeast
Good day to all,

I am attempting to find my progenitors on my fathers side. I wish to know
as much as possible about my family and their origins. I read somewhere
that they can trace back to someone named Thomas Agrippa 800 A.D. and if
true I find astonishing. I would like to know from a medical history
standpoint as well if Crohns Disease is known to occur in this family or
any other inflammatory illnesses. I am looking for the ancestors of Elisha
Bartlett Dabney whose progenitor was Cornelius Dabney (or D'Aubigne) one of
three brothers that came to the Americas named Robert, and John. All are
descendants of William H. Dabney from Fayal, Azores. He built a home there
called Bagatelle.

K. Dabney-Robinson

K, I don't think there are any M.D.s on this list. You'd have to go to a
university or search the PubMed on Crohns Disease. We are a genealogy list
and research our ancestors going back in time. I also believe that the
Dabney family you speak of lived before Crohn's was labeled as such.

I don't know if anyone has researched the Dabney family and has it
documented with primary sources. Many records that could be used as primary
sources just don't exist from then. If you are a male, you should take a
Y-DNA test. It will follow your Dabney line all the way back in time
(assuming there's no illegitimacy or skeleton in the closet on that line).
Family Tree DNA is the only company who still offers Y-DNA testing for
genealogy. I'd do a Y-DNA 67 marker. If that's not in your budget, start of
at a lower resolution and add more markers as the budget allows. DNA can
help in the tracing of family lines when there's no paper trail to follow.
