Remember that when you change retention periods in the config files
this applies to new volumes only. To get it to apply to existing
volumes you need to execute the following 2 commands in bconsole
(answering the prompts for each command):

update pool from resource

update all volumes in pool

Although not your problem (since DRC202L5 was written yesterday), I
see that you have a 7 day retention period on these volumes. Not the
60 that is in your config.

I probably should have said the File and Job retention periods control
what is kept in the database.

Anyways see here for info about the 3 retention periods:

The year retention on volumes will cause this. The Job and File
retention periods control what is stored in the database.

Looks like you have a 5 day retention now.

I will copy my 2nd email here:

"BTW, Your retention period is 1209600 seconds (14 days). If you
changed that in bacula-dir.conf with existing volumes you need to
execute

update pool from resource

update all volumes in pool

in bconsole to have bacula apply the changes to existing volumes. The
settings in bacula-dir.conf apply to new volumes only unless you use
these commands."

Thanks. I installed this on gentoo by bumping the portage ebuilds to

The Volume Utility Tools will allow this. If you want to just extract
files bextract can do the job. If you want to reimport the entire
volume bscan will do so.

http://www.bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/utility/utility/Volume_Utility_Tools.html

Also remember to reset the volume retention on all existing volumes
since changing the retention in bacula-dir.conf has no effect on
existing volumes.

Use the following bconsole commands:

update pool from resource

then

update all volumes in pool

Perhaps the software encryption is not very compressible. Remember
some encryption methods make your data look more random. And random
data does not compress at all.

I would start at this error message. Did you edit bacula_dir.conf

Having a current copy of the catalog can save you a lot of time if

Put the catalog backup (and bacula configs) in its own pool so its
easy to find. Then restore the catalog (and configs) with bscan and
then you should not need to bscan individual volumes.

bscan will pull the records back into the database. Make sure you
update your retention period first so it does not prune right after
the scan.

Also bls will give you a listing without putting the info back into
the database.

Now I've got another question: Is it possible to run multiple backups at the

Yes of course. You most likely have to increase the maximum
concurrent jobs setting in 3 or so places to do so and if you only
have a single device in your storage make sure the concurrent jobs all
go to the same volume.

They do not need to be the same value. They all control different
levels of concurrency (jobs, individual clients, storage, director).

But I see in Bacula that the VolStatus is still Full, not Recycle:

And I have the following in my Director:

   Recycle = yes
   AutoPrune = yes
   Volume Retention = 3 months

Should I not see these tapes as Recycle or Purged or some other
 VolStatus?

Bacula will only recycle when there are no available volumes in the
pool so tapes will be retained at least as long as the retention

From the beginning.

When compression is used, is the compression done on the client side or the

   1. replacing the scsi controller - no effect

   4. replacing the tapeloader - no effect

so even with all physical parts removed bacula insist that the tapes are
fully writen after 150gb or even 80gb. We used brand new, never written
tapes too and got told they are full. but checking showed we had once
again just written less then expected.

So if somebody out there with the same problem and a solution please share.

Start testing at a lower level. I mean try filling a tape with tar or
dd. You probably want to use random data as a source instead of
/dev/zero (because of compression will compress 0s such that you may
never fill the tape...)

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula Catalog Server - MySQL - 1 Core Used Max ?

2015-03-24 Thread John Drescher
we have a rather large Bacula setup - ~600 Clients, database for catalog is
19GB large. File table is ~65 million records.

Right now, bacula director can not run backups as scheduled and delays the
jobs for up to 2 hours, as it seems the catalog is not keeping up.

CPU usage on SD is: 25% (0,5 Core)

CPU usage on Dir is: 10% (0,2 Core)

CPU usage on Catalog is: 25% (1 Core)

SD has not hit it’s storage IO limit, as I/O Wait is almost zero (24x 10k
spindles in Hardware Raid, doing ~50MB/s avg).

Also we have defined 20 parallel backup drives doing backups, so drives is
 not a blocker I guess.

It seems that the bacula catalog is CPU bound and that only a single core is
 used (of 4).

How can I parallelize database access with Bacula Director to speed up the
 backup process.

If you do not have attribute spooling enabled enable that. Also tune
your mysql database. The defaults in a lot of systems assume you have
only 64MB of ram or similar.

 One more question for clarification:

Attribute spooling only solves insert and update issues and not select
 issues right ?

Correct.

Our monitoring shows that we only have 10 -20 inserts/s for the DB but the
selects are capped at ~370 selects/second during peak times.

I would expect very few selects during a backup and very many inserts.
Every single file that is backed up should be an insert. With
attribute spooling this changes into a batch insert after the job has
finished.

The volume retention is based on the last time the volume was written (with
the list media output command you can see it in the LastWritten column). If
you set up a retention period of 5 years for the pool, any volumes in this
pool could not be written until the five years have passed since the last
 written time.

Also the retention does not start until the volume is marked Full or
Used. When it is marked Full or Used the LastWritten time when the 5
years will begin.

Also did you tune the database? A lot of mysql implementations are

 Thanks for the response.

That hdparm was run during the despooling process which is likely impacting
those numbers. (Although I would argue that 125MB/sec should be more than
 enough to despool a 45MB file! :))

Its usually an IOPS issue more than a sequential write. The defaults
cause mysql to flush too often by setting it to use too small of a
buffer...

Remember that the retention period does not even begin until the tape
is marked Full or Used. And then after it is marked Full or Used the
period is calculated from the LastWrittenDate on the volume (stored in
the database).

If you want to control how long a volume is used bacula has a few
directives that limit the use duration and the number of jobs and
total bytes written. When these limits are reached a volume will
marked Used and the retention period will begin.

Remember bacula storage devices operate like a tape meaning only 1

We've had 3 director crashes since updating to 7.0.4, which is highly
unusual for us. We've had a stable bacula for years now. Don't know if
anyone else has had this issue.

I have not had any crashes on gentoo with 7.0.4 and 35+ clients.

Re: [Bacula-users] Backup on Tape

2014-08-04 Thread John Drescher
 1) Can we tune bacula config files for maximize backup speed?

Yes. I recommend that you tune your database (mysql and postgresql
come with very poor default settings) and also increase the default
block size. 64K is way too small for a modern LTO tape drive.

 2) Can bacula use both tape drive simultaneous backup for same pool?

Yes. It is possible to load more than 1 tape from the same pool to
more than 1 tape drive and when these are loaded you can run different
jobs on each tape drive. I do not remember the bacula directive to
allow that however. Please google. This has been discussed dozens of
times on this list.

Re: [Bacula-users] fd to sd connection refused.

2014-07-15 Thread John Drescher
There is authentication. The fd has a password in the conf file on the
client side. The director contacts the fd and tells it to initiate
communications with the sd with the ip address stored in
bacula-sd.conf. Remember this can not be localhost or 127.0.0.1 since
the fd would then try to connect to a sd that is on the same machine
as the client not the director..

I had to first stop bacula-sd daemon

I then ran the following command:

 #./bls -V B01206L5 /dev/nst0

This gave me a listing of all the files on this tape. Please note that “bls”
utility has other options we can use for example to read the label, to read
 the block etc..

The advantage to extracting this out of the database is it will be
much faster since no need to read the tape blocks to extract the
information.

 I receive this error info:

I don't get this, with the directives AutoPrune and Volume Retention
 this should not happen...

 Any ideas?

Maybe the error message is telling you the truth. I mean Volume
Retention time has not expired.

post the output of list media for the volume in question.

Also remember that changing the pool definition in bacula-dir.conf
does nothing to change the retention period of existing volumes. You
need to reload the config in bconsole then update pool from resource

get a is waiting on Storage daemon _. The backups are set to be stored

see why this is doing this. I use a different storage device, storage daemon,
volume pool, and backup schedule to keep everything organized. I posted my

Remember that a disk device acts just like a tape drive meaning that
for a single device you can not load 2 volumes at the same time. If
you want more than 1 job to run you need more than 1 storage device.
If you plan on adding additional clients and want them to run more
simultaneous jobs I recommend that you search the archives for bacula

autochanger with multiple drives so you can have concurrency.

No you can run multiple jobs to the same device at the same time. The

device can only access 1 volume at a time.

Also this has nothing to do with your filesystem or partition. You can

These look like a problem with your SQL server (possibly permissions)
but I am not sure.

I would limit the volume size to 10 to 100GB. And then divide that by
the total size of your disk. So set the maximum # of volumes in your
pool to 37 in the case of 100GB volumes.

Yes its better. And no it will not work at all.

I mean 2 X 16 = 32 GB total

For 2GB volumes you want to use 1850 maximum volumes. That seems
excessive. I would choose a larger volume size.

Re: [Bacula-users] Volume not recycling?

2014-05-23 Thread John Drescher
 - Looks like it’s a disk volume, and there’s no limit on volume size or job
count or time, nor a “Use Volume Once”. I think it will just keep appending
without ever starting a new volume.

You are correct.

 - File job retention 1 year, would span 12 full backups.

 - Volume retention 1 month: that starts counting after the last write to the
volume, not at day one. It also may never happen (or at least later than
you expect, I don’t know if there’s a default maximum size) because there’s
 no limit on volume use.

The retention period will begin when the volume is marked Full or
Used. With the current settings that will happen when the filesystem
becomes full. At that point bacula will start the retention counting
from the last modified time. Also at that time bacula will prompt the
user to label an additional volume since there are no appendable
volumes.

Re: [Bacula-users] Change a volume from 'Error' to 'Append'

2014-05-21 Thread John Drescher
I've observed similar issues in the past. A job fails part way through and
the catalog is not updated leaving a mismatch in the number of files in the
volume versus what's recorded in the catalog. This is then detected the next
time the volume is used, and Bacula marks the volume as Error without writing
 anything to it.

Given the mismatch, the safest thing to do is mark the volume as Full, and
wait for the retention period to expire so the volume can be recycled.
Unfortunately this wastes space (more painful when you have 100GB volumes and
it failed within the first few gig...), so you'll need to either have
sufficient spare space on your SD that you can cope with this, or be willing
to sacrifice the other jobs on the volume and delete jobs+purge or purge it
 immediately to regain the space.

 I'm not sure how Bacula would behave if you change it straight to append;
whether it would leave a hole in the volume, or whether this mismatch would
 corrupt subsequent jobs.

The times I have done this there was no problem. For file based
volumes I keep them small 5 to 10 GB and in this case it does not
really waste space to mark the volume Full and or recycling the job
with the error.

We have a monthly rotation schedule (this is actually the default

 # sunday, incremental backups other days
 Schedule {
 Name = WeeklyCycle
 Run  = Full 1st sun at 23:00
 Run  = Differential 2nd-5th sun at 23:00
 Run  = Incremental mon-sat at 23:00
 }

After two cycles (two months), we would like to delete old files from
the volume file. Thus we set

 FileRetention   = 60 days
 JobRetention= 60 days
 VolumeRetention = 60 days
 Recycle = yes

There is no maximum file or volume size or volume use duration
 configured.

My question is: will the above settings ensure that after about sixty
days, the file volume size will reach its maximum (assuming that the
size of the backed-up data remains constant)?

No it will not. The retention period begins after a volume is marked
full or used. At 60 days it will still be append. You need to limit
the # of jobs, use duration and/or size. Then after the volume is
marked Full or Used the 60 days begins counting from the last written
date.

No it will not. The retention period begins after a volume is marked
full or used. At 60 days it will still be append. You need to limit
the # of jobs, use duration and/or size.

So in my case I would have to set UseDuration accordingly.

Then after the volume is marked Full or Used the 60 days begins
counting from the last written date.

I want to purge files directly when the (catalog) retention period
(sixty days) occurs. Does that mean I have to set UseDuration to 0 (0
 + 60 days = 60 days)?

Maybe use duration of 59 days. Then volume retention in a few hours.
If you set use duration to a small number # 0 you will only be able
to store data on the volume for that period. I believe a use duration
of 0 means infinity (although I could be wrong).

Also remember that even on disk volumes that bacula recycles an entire
volume at a time. So the jobs written on the first day will be around
for 60 days but the jobs written on the 59th day will be around for
less than a day.

Sorry for so many emails. I believe to accomplish what you want you
need to make 1 volume per day. Then you can have a use duration of a
few hours and a 60 day retention

 Hi all,

I hoped I would never need to use my Bacula backup for a restore, but I do.
The problem is that the system hard drive died. I’ve replaced it and

and Webmin. All is good up to this point, now I’d like to restore the
original files I backed up that are on a network drive.

Since the backup I have isn’t registered with this system and recorded in
the Bacula db, there is no catalog or record of its existence. I’ve used
Retrospect backup by EMC on Windows systems, it allows for a catalog to be
rebuilt and all the folders and files contained in the backup to be viewed
before restoring the system. The backup I have consists of about 10 smaller
volumes and not just one large one.

So my question is, can this be done with Bacula?

You need to use bscan to import this data back into the database.
