Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula Catalog Server - MySQL - 1 Core Used Max ?
we have a rather large Bacula setup - ~600 Clients, database for catalog is 19GB large. File table is ~65 million records. Right now, bacula director can not run backups as scheduled and delays the jobs for up to 2 hours, as it seems the catalog is not keeping up. CPU usage on SD is: 25% (0,5 Core) CPU usage on Dir is: 10% (0,2 Core) CPU usage on Catalog is: 25% (1 Core) SD has not hit it’s storage IO limit, as I/O Wait is almost zero (24x 10k spindles in Hardware Raid, doing ~50MB/s avg). Also we have defined 20 parallel backup drives doing backups, so drives is not a blocker I guess. It seems that the bacula catalog is CPU bound and that only a single core is used (of 4). How can I parallelize database access with Bacula Director to speed up the backup process. If you do not have attribute spooling enabled enable that. Also tune your mysql database. The defaults in a lot of systems assume you have only 64MB of ram or similar. Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula Catalog Server - MySQL - 1 Core Used Max ?
One more question for clarification: Attribute spooling only solves insert and update issues and not select issues right ? Correct. Our monitoring shows that we only have 10 -20 inserts/s for the DB but the selects are capped at ~370 selects/second during peak times. I would expect very few selects during a backup and very many inserts. Every single file that is backed up should be an insert. With attribute spooling this changes into a batch insert after the job has finished. The volume retention is based on the last time the volume was written (with the list media output command you can see it in the LastWritten column). Thanks for the response. That hdparm was run during the despooling process which is likely impacting those numbers. 1) Can we tune bacula config files for maximize backup speed? Yes. I recommend that you tune your database (mysql and postgresql come with very poor default settings) and also increase the default block size. 64K is way too small for a modern LTO tape drive. 2) Can bacula use both tape drive simultaneous backup for same pool? Yes. It is possible to load more than 1 tape from the same pool to more than 1 tape drive and when these are loaded you can run different jobs on each tape drive. I do not remember the bacula directive to allow that however. Please google. This has been discussed dozens of times on this list. Re: [Bacula-users] fd to sd connection refused.
There is authentication. The fd has a password in the conf file on the client side. The director contacts the fd and tells it to initiate communications with the sd with the ip address stored in bacula-sd.conf. Remember this can not be localhost or 127.0.0.1 since the fd would then try to connect to a sd that is on the same machine as the client not the director.. I had to first stop bacula-sd daemon I then ran the following command: #./bls -V B01206L5 /dev/nst0 This gave me a listing of all the files on this tape. Please note that “bls” utility has other options we can use for example to read the label, to read the block etc.. The advantage to extracting this out of the database is it will be much faster since no need to read the tape blocks to extract the information. Re: [Bacula-users] Volume not recycling?
- Looks like it’s a disk volume, and there’s no limit on volume size or job count or time, nor a “Use Volume Once”. I think it will just keep appending without ever starting a new volume. You are correct. - File job retention 1 year, would span 12 full backups. - Volume retention 1 month: that starts counting after the last write to the volume, not at day one. It also may never happen (or at least later than you expect, I don’t know if there’s a default maximum size) because there’s no limit on volume use. The retention period will begin when the volume is marked Full or Used. With the current settings that will happen when the filesystem becomes full. At that point bacula will start the retention counting from the last modified time. Also at that time bacula will prompt the user to label an additional volume since there are no appendable volumes. -- Accelerate Dev Cycles with Automated Cross-Browser Testing - For FREE Instantly run your Selenium tests across 300+ browser/OS combos. Re: [Bacula-users] Change a volume from 'Error' to 'Append'
I've observed similar issues in the past. A job fails part way through and the catalog is not updated leaving a mismatch in the number of files in the volume versus what's recorded in the catalog. This is then detected the next time the volume is used, and Bacula marks the volume as Error without writing anything to it. Given the mismatch, the safest thing to do is mark the volume as Full, and wait for the retention period to expire so the volume can be recycled. Unfortunately this wastes space (more painful when you have 100GB volumes and it failed within the first few gig...), so you'll need to either have sufficient spare space on your SD that you can cope with this, or be willing to sacrifice the other jobs on the volume and delete jobs+purge or purge it immediately to regain the space. I'm not sure how Bacula would behave if you change it straight to append; whether it would leave a hole in the volume, or whether this mismatch would corrupt subsequent jobs. The times I have done this there was no problem. For file based volumes I keep them small 5 to 10 GB and in this case it does not really waste space to mark the volume Full and or recycling the job with the error. Re: [Bacula-users] Reusing a disk volume
Maybe use duration of 59 days. Then volume retention in a few hours. If you set use duration to a small number # 0 you will only be able to store data on the volume for that period. I believe a use duration of 0 means infinity (although I could be wrong). Also remember that even on disk volumes that bacula recycles an entire volume at a time. So the jobs written on the first day will be around for 60 days but the jobs written on the 59th day will be around for less than a day. John -- John M. I believe to accomplish what you want you need to make 1 volume per day. Then you can have a use duration of a few hours and a 60 day retention John -- Accelerate Dev Cycles with Automated Cross-Browser Testing - For FREE Instantly run your Selenium tests across 300+ browser/OS combos. Re: [Bacula-users] Help with a question
On Mon, May 12, 2014 at 9:10 AM, John Vyhnanek jo...@goodcooking.com wrote: Hi all, I hoped I would never need to use my Bacula backup for a restore, but I do. The problem is that the system hard drive died. I’ve replaced it and installed the same OS, Centos 6.5, that I had before, plus Bacula, MySQL, and Webmin. All is good up to this point, now I’d like to restore the original files I backed up that are on a network drive. Since the backup I have isn’t registered with this system and recorded in the Bacula db, there is no catalog or record of its existence. I’ve used Retrospect backup by EMC on Windows systems, it allows for a catalog to be rebuilt and all the folders and files contained in the backup to be viewed before restoring the system. The backup I have consists of about 10 smaller volumes and not just one large one. So my question is, can this be done with Bacula? You need to use bscan to import this data back into the database.
