I don't normally answer such questions in the first place, and your email is

Just because my answer is short and to the point (the FileSet filenames *are*
messed up) doesn't mean that I am attacking or criticising the person who

Remember not everyone is as magnificent as you are and sometimes it won't

It seems to me that you are the one doing the judging here, rather sarcastic,

But in any case thank you for the reply I'll go through the manual again.

Kern,

Okay I see your point, I'm sorry, the day just started @#$!@ and your e-mail
was not what I really expected and it was the last straw, in a way of speaking.
Please remember that coming from a MS background I found it quite difficult to
do things the right way and I missed the quotation marks in the manual, yes it
was my fault no need to rub it in at this point, but it was a valuable lesson.
I never intended to discourage you or to be judgmental but like I said I just
needed someone to smack me in the right direction which you did, I know that
now, but all that I'm trying to say is sorry and thank you and please remember
that there are a lot of other idiots like me out there so patience is a virtue
if not you can always go visit your local Bar or gunshop (:

I don't think this is the right sort of answer when you want more
detailed help from someone spending his personal resources on something
you use...

And your line breaks in your mailer are also all messed up ;-)

But in any case thank you for the reply I'll go through the manual again.

When you do so and find inconsistencies in the supplied examples it
would be nice if you posted this here - or to bacula-docs - so the
manual can be improved.

Your use of quotes and forward slashes in your FileSets is all messed up.

Well, Kern already commented on your FileSet definition. I noticed that
you have two identical Catalog definitions, too, and I'm sure that is
not very useful...

 The strange thing is
as soon as I move the client up the client works but then the original
specified client gives the error (I hope that I’m making sense).

Seems to indicate a broken FileSet, I guess. In fact I'd consider this a
bug - the DIR should probably complain about that. But that's a low
priority issue IMO.

I'd suggest to start with a straightforward, simple configuration: Apart
from the director, storage, messages and client resources use only the
necessary filesets, one catalog, one schedule, and only the necessary
pools. If that works you can implement JobDefs when they are needed,
more filesets, more schedules and so on. In smaller setups I don't think
you need multiple catalogs, and IMO a very limited number of JobDefs
keeps the job definitions more readable.

You know what Kern, instead of looking down at a person all that you could have
done was just point out what I did wrong and fixing 1, only 1, to give me an
example, that is all that I need is someone just to get me on the right path so
that I can get this working. Remember not everyone is as magnificent as you are
and sometimes it won't cost you a thing just to help a person out just by
giving him practical examples on the config file he sent you so that he will
actually see what he is doing wrong.

But in any case thank you for the reply I'll go through the manual again.

What is the problem? Still the btape test complaining? I that case you
could simply run backup, restore to somewhere else, and compare the two

as well .. I am not seeing anything wrong .. (can someone else??)

The device configuration look normal now to me:

LabelMedia = yes; # lets Bacula label unlabeled media
  Random Access = Yes;

Well, thank you Arno. I think I am going to have to abandon Bacula for backups.
I have compiled my own for SuSE 10.0 and I still get the same error.

Thank you,

I agree.

http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Volume_Utility_Tools.html

This program permits a number of elementary tape operations via a
tty command interface. The test command, described below, can be very
useful for testing older tape drive compatibility problems. Aside
from initial testing of tape drive compatibility with Bacula, btape
will be mostly used by developers writing new tape drivers.

Quite specifically: tape.

Cool .. I do not have to abandon it so early into the game. :)

Thanks,

Now, that I have resolved that I get the following ..

Reposition to file:block 0:4
26-Feb 08:44 btape: btape Error: block.c:264 Volume data error at 0:4! Wanted
ID: BB02, got . Buffer discarded.

btape: btape.c:979 Read block 5 failed! file=0 blk=4. ERR=Input/output error
btape: btape.c:989 This may be because the tape drive block size is not
set to variable blocking as normally used by Bacula.
Please see the Tape Testing chapter in the manual and
look for using mt with defblksize and setoptions
If your tape drive block size is correct, then perhaps
your SCSI driver is *really* stupid and does not
correctly report the file:block after a FSF. In this
 case try setting:
Fast Forward Space File = no
 in your Device resource.

Obviously, the default is variable block storage for tape devices but I am using
disk. Therefore it is fixed block. I have tried the following settings ..

Block Positioning = no
Fast Forward Space File = no

but to no avail ..

Any ideas??

[Bacula-users] Configuration Error

I am trying to use disk as the backup device. What am I doing wrong? :)

btape -c /etc/bacula/bacula-sd.conf /backups/bacula/backups/archive

you could trim your mails a little... might make it easier to find what
you're trying to discuss.

Now, that I have resolved that I get the following ..

Reposition to file:block 0:4
26-Feb 08:44 btape: btape Error: block.c:264 Volume data error at 0:4!
Wanted ID: BB02, got . Buffer discarded.

This is running btape with disk storage, right? I have never tried it,
because I *know* that file positioning works with file based volumes :-)

btape: btape.c:979 Read block 5 failed! file=0 blk=4. ERR=Input/output
error

btape: btape.c:989 This may be because the tape drive block size is not
set to variable blocking as normally used by Bacula.

Obviously, the default is variable block storage for tape devices but I
am using disk. Therefore it is fixed block. I have tried the following
settings ..

Block Positioning = no
Fast Forward Space File = no

but to no avail ..

Why don't you try the sample configuration for file storage? I think
that you're well advised using that because it works here :-) especially
leaving the block size at default should help a lot. Anything fancy like
Positioning etc. is not used by the file storage code, I think, because
there is no such thing as the necessary IOCTL there... Random Access =
Yes should be used instead.

Any ideas??

I think so...

Arno

I did use the sample file config. for file storage.

  Media Type = File
  Archive Device = /backups/bacula/backups
LabelMedia = yes; # lets Bacula label unlabeled media
  Random Access = Yes;
AutomaticMount = yes; # when device opened, read it
  RemovableMedia = no;

}

i just changed the backup directory only.

I should be using File based storage. I just changed the directory from /tmp to
