Re: [beagleboard] Supporting Ubuntu Core on BBB in the long term

2016-12-19 Thread 'Luther Goh Lu Feng' via BeagleBoard
Yes you are right that snap is available on Debian. But not only Debian but
also other "classical" Linux installs.

However, the difference between such snap classical installs and Ubuntu Core is
that Ubuntu Core containerised the kernel, minimal OS and applications, but the
earlier only containerised applications. Thanks.

I think I know what is going on, I think the BBBW uses a bit more power

Re: [beagleboard] Re: BBB Ethernet stopped working.

2016-12-19 Thread Gerald Coley
There is not a HW only fix for this issue. Period.

If you add a reset line to the PHY, you still need to override the pins on
the processor to inputs for the reset to work. That is a SW change.

Just have the SW scan for one of the four addresses and use the one that is
found. Simple fix that works.

Thanks Robert, I'll get the port 80 switched in the bonescript services.
One also needs to change the /sites-enabled/000-default.conf port
number along with the ports.conf for Apache.

Thanks again,

Specifically switching ports on the standard IOT configuration on the
BBGW using the latest IOT image? Any help on that subject?

There are many ways, including using iptables, or nginx. However, this is
not a question that is specific to this hardware. As such searching the web
for "linux how to change Nodejs port. . ." etc will produce a lot of fruit.

[beagleboard] Re: BBB Ethernet stopped working.

2016-12-19 Thread sslupsky
Hi Gerald,

I saw your comment in response to the question about another revision to
the BBB. There is a long standing issue with the BBB reset related to the
Ethernet PHY not coming out of reset properly. In order to work around the
problem you need to hack the board and drive the Ethernet PHY with a GPIO
to ensure the proper reset timing for the PHY.

Is there any plan by CircuitCo to make a revision to address this issue?
Its a rather tricky hack to do because you have to drill out one of the
via's to do it properly and that takes a special laser to do it.

Here is another link to a post on the TI forum that also discusses this
issue and I have seen it discussed here as well. I am not aware of any
software revision that has addressed this but perhaps there has been a
software fix?

[beagleboard] Console image vs IOT image

2016-12-19 Thread Ross Morrison
On the latest images page(https://beagleboard.org/latest-images) has
the IOT version replaced the plain jane console image? I would really
like to build from the latest basic console image then add options as
needed.

And, how would one go about changing the port nodejs/bonescript listens
on? I would like to get Apache back to port 80 and move
nodejs/bonescript over to port 8080 reversing the way they are
shipped.

Thanks all,

Some people, specifically that are college students may not have the luxury
of using ethernet. In the case where they have a laptop, with ethernet
plugged into the schools network. Or even if they're using wifi, using an
additional cable may not be convenient, or otherwise very difficult if
they're using that ethernet adapter at home on a dedicated network.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Wireless speed issues?

2016-12-19 Thread William Hermans
Well I do not have a BBBW, but I do have an rPI 3. Disabling power save at
boot is fairly easy.

william@rpi:~$ sudo nano /etc/rc.local
Add: /sbin/iw dev wlan0 set power_save off

william@rpi:~$ sudo reboot
william@rpi:~$ iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn Mode:Master Tx-Power=31 dBm
  Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Power Management:off

However, I have a sneaking suspicion that this, and all the other methods
mentioned above won't work. I'm fairly sure Robert is using some form of a
network manager to handle the BBBW's wireless, and in this case, disabling
power_save will have to be done through this network manager.

Hi I have a Windows 7 Professional PC running VBOX with Ubuntu14.04.02LTS

I want to use this as developement host for the BBB.

However I cannot connect to the BBB from this VBOX image.
Is this a known issue?

I can see the BBB from as a disc in Windows7 and open a aTeraterm and
connect to the BBB.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Add to file /etc/network/interfaces a line with the following context
(works after reboot):

wireless-power off

[beagleboard] Re: Wireless speed issues?

2016-12-19 Thread Stephane Charette
Do you mean sleep_auth? If so, I've also run an issue with the default
value of 2 ("extreme low power"). I place this file on all my BBGW devices:

$ *cat /etc/cron.d/wireless *
MAILTO=""
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
@reboot root sleep 60 ; echo 0 >
/sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/wlcore/sleep_auth

Looking through the wlcore source code, the possible values are:

   - 0 = active mode
   - 1 = low power
   - 2 = extreme low power

I was actually looking for a "containerised operating system"[1]. And I
went with Ubuntu Core as there seemed to be ready community images. At
least based on a cursory search, there doesnt seemed to be a known way to
run CoreOS and Project Atomic on the BBB. I will be happy to consider any
containerised debian based alternatives that I am unaware about. Thanks.

[beagleboard] BBBW product image

2016-12-19 Thread Stephane Charette
I wanted to make a blog post about the BBBW, and needed an image to use.

For sanity sake, I recommend that people do not make a Google image search
for BBBW at work. Definitely NSFW!
