announcement of new litter
Hello Everyone: I wanted to announce the arrival of Mora's pups this afternoon. She has two boys and 4 girls and they are beautiful!. The sire is Ch. Great Lakes J Spencer Barns who is a truly fantastic male with a temperament to match his outstanding conformation. Many thanks goes to Laura for her help and support in making this litter possible. This is NOT a solicitation for buyers - merely an announcement by a very proud but tired granddad. Mora had a difficult c-section but sprang back!!! I am quite proud of her. He, like you, expected her to accept him as he does in neutral territory. every time he walked by, her lip would raise. i have a basket of bones that i leave out and she snapped at him for no reason when he sort of went near it and he totally cried. ***there was GOOD reason in her mind. The basket of bones belongs to the family, NOT an interloper. she doesn't do this to the other dogs i take care of that she also knows. ***I suspect you WOULD see some of this behavior were they to come over at this time. I think you've not likely seen it before because she was not progressed to this stage of development where she is asserting all authority the others will give her. every afternoon when i come home to take my shower, she lays in the bathroom with me. well, today the vizsla was nervous so he came in there and i was petting him and she got all jealous and came over to be pet and snapped at him again. ***HER territory? Or yours. Time for this girl to go back into basic training so she understands that she is to accept all those things in YOUR home that YOU want accepted. She is a little "too big for her britches" which is a common thing for dogs (and kids) to go through. he got so scared he wouldn't walk by her for the rest of the afternoon and she was very cocky. **well of course. She had her way and was proud of it and wasn't about to give an inch of superiority ground she had gained. but he did take a bone and start chewing on it and she just looked at him and got another one. ***Good. She is telling him, I CAN let you have a bone and tomorrow I may decide you CANNOT have a bone. It's strictly up to me. she's not mean and she loves to play but i have never really seen this side of her. ***Girldogs can be quite fickle. so what's any advice on why she's being like this and what i can do when he stays for 3 weeks so he's not terrified. ***More time with her on leash doing things to please you. :-) also, the only other dog she's been like this with is her "sister" a 1 year-old ridgeback who lives upstairs and they see each other every day and were raised together--she gets a little weird with her, too, out of the blue, she gets mad and will raise her lip or snap suddenly--never fighting, but just snap. what should i do? ***Oh, so this isn't a new behavior. Your girl needs more restrictions, not so much freedom to self gratify, and many more opportunities each day to serve you. Re: SARD
Hi Carol I will be the first to admit I know nothing about SARD in dogs, but I have a friend who suffered a partial retinal detachment that happened very suddenly and it was treated by an ophthalmologist with a procedure using a laser to kind of "weld" the retina back into place. It was a painless 10 minute operation and she was 100 percent "fixed" after it. If the retina had been left untreated, further tearing was inevitable and she would have had severely impaired sight. Perhaps a canine opthalmologist would be equipped and trained to do a similar procedure? Good luck. RE: How much to feed and Bones
Hello Jackie, In regards to how much to feed your 4 month old Berner - I have never used Solid Gold but most kibble has a feeding guide on the bag. I however find that many tell us to feed too much. It also may be a good idea to contact the breeder of your puppy for input on how much. I assume you purchased your puppy from a reputable and responsible breeder - perhaps a member of the Bernese Club of Ontario or Canada??? In regards to bones - never feed cooked bones as they are more prone to splinter. I feed my dogs a raw diet and raw meaty bones are a bit part of that diet as well as "recreational bones". - always given raw with no problems. I am in Ontario also so if you require some assistance with your new puppy please feel free to contact me privately. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Bernerly, Angela Wagenblast

RE: Christmas & Berners in community events
Vickie: Just a heads up on parade protocol!! We (TRBMDC) frequently do parades and toss candy to the children. We also pass out Berner Baseball cards to interested parents. On the parade protocol front, most recently we were told by the Greensburg, PA Christmas parade organizers that we could no longer toss candy to the kids -- a safety hazard (can you believe it?)! They did say that we could "hand" the candy to the children. We had 22 dogs, some with carts, at the Greensburg parade -- it was cold but no one noticed -- certainly not the dogs. We have about 40 members in our club. After the parade, we (dogs and people) went over to a club member's house and had chili (inside) while the dogs played in the yard! The Great Pyrs in front of us all wore holly wreaths around their necks and Santa hats on their heads. It really looked nice on their white fur. Depending on the parade, we decorate the carts and our dogs consistent with the theme of the parade. For the Christmas Parade, I had a battery-lighted 2-ft Christmas tree in my cart, secured by Styrofoam. My dog wore a Scarf-em up red bandana with a while Swiss cross embroidered on it. My two other dogs (on lead) wore bells and big Christmas bows. My pup loved all the attention that she received. We are considering adding two more parades next year -- a Christmas one in Pittsburgh and a Halloween one in Mt. Lebanon, PA. We already to an Ohio Swiss parade in the fall. These are not part of our regular meetings, but rather as an extra event. Nancy Melone Mars, PA Three Rivers BMDC
Christmas & Berners
Wow - 26-27 in one area is as many as the entire Lone Star BMDC membership and that covers the entire state. One year a few of us did a parade in my small town. We had a couple of carts I think and a bank genorously donated small lollipops which we could throw at the kids (and adults) along the parade route. Might I suggest if you do something like that and you don't want to use carts, backpacks would work quite well for holding small candies to toss out. Susan Ablon<<< Only about 8 of these 27 Berners in our area are "members" of our regional INWBMDC or the Berner-L (2 are mine, 3 own Christie & Butch Leone, 2 own Jenny McCune, and 1 owns Lindsey Lindgren, the only ones on the Berner-L that I'm aware of). Most of the other 18 or so have no club affiliation, and I can't drum up any interest -- they're "just pets" and the families have no interest in Berner activities other than our local group. I tell 'ya, I had to do a number of illegal U-turns and hotrod chases in my car, and mad hoofing it to chase down a familiar-looking dog part hanging out of a car or walking down a street to find these dogs. Frequently someone would stop me to admire one of mine and ask me if I knew so-and-so, who also owned a Berner. A little detective work on my part rounded up this many. So I'll bet there are a whole lot more Berners out there in your area than you know about through official Berner clubs only. I was pretty shocked myself to find so many just here in Bozeman, Montana. Maybe living here in 9 months of winter in the Rockies is a natural place for them and they're "multiplying"!! As to parades -- Maddie did pull her cart during our annual Sweet Pea Parade in August, as part of our Intermountain Therapy Animals entry. In her cart was a little foo-foo dog, too "delicate" to walk the parade route on his own. Our whole therapy dog group was quite a hit, but Maddie was the star (IMHO). The SP parade police won't allow anyone to throw candy to the kids any more -- someone must have gotten hurt either by flying candy or the mad scramble of several kids trying to grab it. We did, however, toss dog biscuits to the bystanders with dogs! The only bystanders for the Christmas Stroll "parade" (I use that term loosely) are the adults who aren't with their kids in the mob following Santa, so throwing candy may draw those kids up to the front where we really don't want them -- we're trying to avoid having the dogs in a crowd while in carts or a "formation." Backpacks are a good alternative, though, if we find we can't protect them in carts. Keep those ideas coming, please! RE: Detached retinas
Carol: Carol: I don't know about dogs, but at the WV Specialty my husband had an incident that resulted in retinal detachment a weeks later. At dinner, his vision suddenly became clouded, as if looking through a frosted glass shower door. We immediately called the ophthalmologist, who over the phone had him do several eye exercises to test for detachment. The conclusion at that moment was that it was not detached (i.e., he did not need to rush to hospital). The next day, he drove back to see a specialist, who also concluded there was no detachment. Then a week later, just before we were to go hiking in the White Mountains, my husband went in for another check up "just to be safe" -- that morning WHEN HE WAS SITTING IN THE DR's OFFICE, his retina detached. It was subtle, but he actually diagnosed it himself based on the tests that the previous doctor had him do when we were at Oglebay. We cancelled our vacation and the next morning at 7:30 AM he had surgery. He is lucky and sees fine now, but immediately after the surgery, he looked pretty scary and would have made a good stand in for Count Dracula. In humans, if the surgery is not performed within a day or so of the detachment, blindness is the result. Since it would be difficult for a dog to communicate to you exactly what is happening to him in such a short time, it would seem that surgery is not likely and blindness is. In humans, according to the specialist (who only deals in eye surgeries of this kind), a detached retina is an age-related phenomenon that affects SOME people. I do not know if it has a genetic component -- my husband's parents lived to their mid 80s and were not affected. It is not caused by physical trauma (as many believe), although a blow may trigger a pre-existing susceptibility to the condition. I have heard that blind dogs can live a very high quality life. Indeed, Berners are often blind without their owners knowing it. The owner may discover it only when the furniture is moved and the dog bumps into it. There is PRA in Berners (another cause of blindness). I would bet that there is someone on this list who has had a dog with PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) who could give you excellent strategies for helping you help your dog live a good quality life around your home, yard and in daily activities. Please contact your breeder so that she/he can update litter records regarding her line. Also, please update your dog's record in the Berner Garde Database. These records are used to study diseases in our breed, so you perform a valuable service to the breed when you take the time to "leave the legacy" of your dog's data. If you need help, let me know. about grapes
I have to tell a short story about Mahkah when he was about 8 months old- we had a party at our house and had food set out on the table, including a big bowl of grapes. I went outside to talk to someone and when I came back in I noticed most of the grapes gone and some on the floor. Mahkah looked pretty guilty and I assumed he had eaten the grapes, but did not think anything about it(and why would he just eat the grapes anyhow? there was cake on the table too!). About an hour later he was a very sick dog, throwing up, diarrhea, foaming at the mouthwe called the vet who told us to watch him and bring him in if he got any worse- I wanted to bring him right then!(we live an hour from our vet). we did not know why he was sick and didnt even think about the grapes-i was very concerned but after a while it seemed like he got it all out of his system. the next day he was fine. I did not know then, that grapes and raisins could be harmful-but after all the precautions I have been reading I know now that it must have been the grapes that made him so sick. Mahkah does not table surf anymore thanks to some good tricks I learned on the Berner-l, but I thought I would share the story anyhow since everyone had been discussing things dogs should not eat. The reason is that dog's have a very short digestive tract which isn't well suited for breaking down cellulose, the material that forms the cell walls in plants. So...if carrot chunks go in, you pretty much get carrot chunks out the other end. Fine if you're using the F&V's as treats and don't want to add calories...but if you're feeding them for nutrient value, they really have to be pureed to be of much use to the dog. My boy jackson talks constantly!! Actually when we first got him, I was so worried that something was the matter, he was really unhappy or sick or something, because he just made noise all the time. His breeder reassured us that he just had a lot to say, and he's been that way ever since! We call him Chewbaca because he talks like that- woo woo woo. He even seems to have learned to say "hello". When I come home, I swear that's what he's saying. And when we go to play- yikes! He never shuts up! I've been wondering how many other Berners like to chat. Christmas & Berners in community events
I'm looking for some ideas for our local Berner group to participate safely and appropriately in our small city's annual evening downtown Christmas Stroll. First of all, we're a rather loose group -- I've found about 26 or 27 Berners living in and around the area. Every 3 or 4 months, I call everyone and suggest we meet at a safe park, where the dogs can romp and reacquaint themselves with each other's butts while we bipeds catch visit. We just participated for our third year as a "group" in our annual Christmas Stroll, where we informally gather, snap a few pictures, then attempt to "stroll" the eight or so blocks from one end of downtown to the other as a group. We had 17 Berners and their families this year, a record number for us. I demonstrate "herding" skills as I try to keep the group together and moving -- we each stop frequently to chat with friends or people who want to admire, pat, or ask questions about the dogs. Maddie felt it her duty to hoover the street, ingesting every morsal of popcorn, candy apples, and horse poop she could find (we have to dodge draft horses pulling a wagon up and down the street). There's a parade -- if you can call a thousand excited children and their parents accompanying Santa several blocks to the mid-point of downtown a parade. Christie Leone and I decided this was absolutely no place to have our dogs carting, not a mob scene of mostly children. However, I'm thinking maybe the "parade" organizers would allow or want us to act like the reindeer, *LEADING* Santa and his followers. Only maybe 5 or 6 actually cart, but the carts could hold large empty but gaily wrapped box, a battery-lighted tree. Each dog could wear a special bandana or bib, whether they're pulling a cart or just part of the team. It's at night, quite cold, and frequently we're trudging through several inches (feet?) of snow. Has anyone ever tried stringing the dogs together somehow, like a real team, with only the last dog actually pulling something (owners walking alongside)? I'd love your ideas, please! RE: chocolate and other foods to avoid
Hi! I am just curious. What about fruit, like bananas, oranges, apples. Are these OK for a dog to eat. My little Smokie loves bananas, and my Schlappi and Smokie both love to chew on the apples and oranges which fall down from our trees in our back yard. Just curious. I will also take note on the raisin front. I had somewhere heard, or thought that they might be bad for dogs. Thanks for all of the valuable information! While on the subject of foods to avoid, a reminder too about onions and members of the onion family (ie. garlic & leeks). Dogs and cats (esp.) are not good at metabolizing these, if given in excess then toxicity can result -- leading to a serious anemia. And as we've got a holiday coming up remember to go easy on the fatty foods (for the dog, but probably the people too!). It seems the week after any holiday I alwasy see at least one case of pancreatitis where the pet was given their own plate of the human dinner, the turkey skin, or got to lick out the pan. Pancreatitis is extremely painful and can be fatal. Treatment usually involves 3-5 days of hospitalization on IV fluids, pain meds, antibiotics. Beware too those high fat doggie treats I like to call "pancreatitis in a bag" such "Beggin' Strips", "Pupperonis", "Jerky Treat" etc. All things in moderation! Even if they deserve it with their way too cute eyebrows, resist feeding them the entire bag! sue(Aeryn with Devyn & Rowyn) -- now if someone would just tell all that to my counter-surfers!
Have a good Christmas

Hi Carol, I'm afraid I can't give you much information on SARD, the two hereditary eye (not the ld) anomolies I'm aware of to any extent at all in Bernese are PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) and some types of cataracts. I can tell you that at the eye clinic conducted in conjunction with our national specialty last spring, (1) case of retinal detachment was tentatively diagnosed by the opthalmologist. As the clinic is only for screening, I believe the owner was referred for follow-up and I don't know what the outcome was. Certainly, losing sight is serious... BUT before you panic, know that most dogs learn to cope with it very well with a little bit of help from their friends (human and canine). And, there's a terrific support network available to help to you help Tobie adjust. Contact Lary Lawson who maintains a website and email list specifically focused on blind dogs, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, since we don't know much about SARD, you can help us by sharing here on the L what you learn and by entering Tobie and the final diagnosis in the Berner Garde database (www.bernergarde.org) and the GDC eye registry (contact George Packard at GDC, tool free 877-741-2155 (1-5 PM EST) or email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Both provide information to the research community and to breeders working to reduce the incidence of heritable disease in our Bernese. Please let us know how you make out at the opthalmologist... I'm impressed. Got emails from the local club Rescue (who really are on top of things) and also from the group,"Angels for Animals" who is helping the little 5 month old female Berner mix. I guess people are just lining up to help her and welcome her into a loving home. It really makes me feel good to know that people really are watching out and ready to step in and help. New FAA ruling
The following was sent to me by a Doberman friend: The FAA is proposing new rules that could have the effect of forcing airlines to end the shipping of animals on their planes. The AKC is requesting that all fanciers write or E-mail the FAA requesting that the proposed regulations be changed to remove the provisions that are of great concern in the currently proposed regulations. These proposed regulations include: a requirement that all airlines report cause of death, loss or injury to all warm and cold-blooded animals - including every tropical fish that died en route to a pet store, labels us as "guardians" of the animals we ship, rather than owners or consignors/consignees, and requires the names and addresses of all owners of animals involved in an "incident" to be made public, raising serious privacy concerns. The responses must be received by the FAA by December 27. The following is a link to the AKC website that provides more information. http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=1613 Sue Sanvido

Re: Berner in Canfield Ohio
My application is already in for the Berner girl in Canfield, Ohio. I just hope it was the first one on the list. My previous berner girl died in August at the age of 8 from complications of lupus. They are calling St. Pauli, the girl in the shelter, a berner mix, not a pure breed - just what I'm looking for. There is also a 5 month old male berner mix at the same shelter. He has no white on his face so looks less Berner but because they are both the same age I'm guessing they are littermates. Both have gone into a prison training program, to come out crate trained, housebroken, and knowing basic obedience in 6 to 8 weeks when they will be available for adoption.. Usually the prisons only train service dogs so I'm surprised and pleased to see them taking in rescue dogs for more basic training. Anne Cervenka Grand Marais, MN

We were considering using one of the > following: Flint River, PhD, Wysong, Wellness, Canidae complemented with > raw meat and grains. I would be cautious about adding meat and grains for several reasons. First, is that muscle meat is very high in phospherous and low in calcium. If you add plain meat, it would be a good idea to also add a calcium source such as yogurt. If you really want to add something meaty to a kibble, one way to go would be to add what's commonly referred to as 'raw meaty bones', ie: a 'package deal of meat & bone. A good example is chicken necks, these can be fed whole (one crunch and down the hatch they go) and as with ALL bones, should be fed raw...NEVER cooked (even when ground). Grains are a very common cause of allergy and digestive trouble in dogs and are difficult for them to utilize. Being primarily carbohydrates, the second most calory dense food group (behind fat), they can also contribute to obesity. As a reference point, my (2) dogs on BARF diets don't get ANY grains in their food at all. They do get some in cookies and other carbs from veggies such as sweet potatoes. Personally...I wouldn't add much of anything to a kibble diet other than maybe a small amount of pureed fresh fruits and veggies. Afterall, the reason you're using kibble is your confidence in the manufacturer's ability to provide a healthy, complete diet. If you believe that's the case, why upset the 'balance'? -Sherri Venditti

First consideration is the loose stools...has Bilbo had them all along or is this something new? Have you tried cutting back a bit on the amount you're feeding? After their major growth spurt, I find I have to cut back on how much food I give until it levels off with full maturity. Too much food is a very common cause of loose stools, especially if they sart out firm and finish loose. Has your vet done a stool check for worms? If you decide that changing foods is the way to go, I'd look for a food with something close to the following composition: 26% protein 14% fat 0.80% Calcium (in a 1.2Ca:1P ratio) I'd avoid foods with much higher fat content and if the fat content is higher, then look for a higher protein content as well to balance it out. (Source: Summary presented at the Large Breed Health Care Symposium, Venice Italy, Nov 2001...symposium was sponsored by Iams) I'd look for foods with a high degree of digestibility, ie: a lot of meat sources for protein rather than plant sources. > - We took him hiking a month ago and he started clicking from > his hindquarters. he only seems to do it when walking > on cement. This is going to sound dumb...but have you checked the length of his nails? > The only problem we have with him is when he sees another dog, he > just lunges because he wants to play and greet the other guy (who may > not want to be as enthusiastic). Any ideas? Use Eileen's suggestion for teaching him to focus on you rather than the other dog. I've been working on this with my intact male... He's not 100% yet, but he's starting to automatically (without a cue) turn in front of me and *sit* when he feels the urge to leap at other dogs. -Sherri Venditti
