RE: OFA translations

2003-03-25 Thread Nancy Melone
I will illustrate with the OFA elbow number of one of my dogs:

BMD-EL2763M24-PI

Here s what it means:

BMD = the breed
EL = Elbow
2763 = means that he is the 2763rd Berner to receive an OFA elbow
certification number
M = male
24 = the dog's age in months when the radiograph was taken
PI = permanently identified (he is permanently identified by both a DNA
profile and a microchip)

If you search the OFA database for my dog's entry, you will note that his
information is in green letters. That means that I have agreed to release
all findings on him that are reported in green.

If you want to know how elbows and hips are graded (what it means to get
hips with grade E or G or F, etc., go to the web pages noted below.

www.offa.org/ofaed.html For information on how elbows are graded.

www.offa.org/hdgrade.html For Information how hips are graded.

It's wonderful when your puppy's dam and sire have excellent hip ratings and
certified elbow ratings, but you need to remember that the mode of
inheritance for hip and elbow dysplasia is polygenic (i.e., coming from more
than one ("poly") gene pair. These traits are more complex than the typical
dominant or recessive genetic trait. The additive interaction of the genes
can cause variable results and the gene can be easily passed on to other
generations without being identified). As such, you would also like to know
the ratings of the brothers and sisters of the dam and sire to get a better
picture of your puppy's risk for inherited disease.

There is a very good (easy to read) article at the AKC Canine Health Fund
site on examining broader pedigrees at the following web address:
www.akcchf.org/news/press/sundrypress/Hovan%20article%20-%20Golden%20Paw%20'
02.pdf (Collecting and Utilizing Phenotypic Data to minimize Disease: A
Breeder's Practical Guide). While it is written for a breeder, PPOs can
also find it useful. The author states that we do not have genetic tests
for many diseases and so we need to use phenotypic data (what you can see as
on x-rays of hips) to make informed breeding (or puppy buying) decisions.

Re: Puppy Training Questions

2003-03-25 Thread A Allen
Hi Kim,

Do you clicker train? The best way to prevent jumping up is to turn your
back on the dog (ie. ignore her!) while she jumps, and teach her an
alternate acceptable behaviour like sit, which you reward her immensly for
(food, praise). If you are consistant with this, it will take no time at
all to extinguish the bad behaviour and teach the good. If you touch her at
all while she's jumping, you are giving her what she wants, attention (no
matter how negative) and it will take forever for her to learn not to do it.
So just ignore her and show her what you really want from her.

RE: SAVING ON DRYERS/BOOSTER BATHs/SHAMPOO

2003-03-25 Thread Nancy Melone
Carol:
Just a reminder to shop around for the booster bath -- the price ranges
quite a bit (up to $40). I have one. With 3 Berners, I returned my
investment in less than 5 baths! I have it in my garage and hook it up to
my utility sink, run the hose directly to the floor drain. I give baths all
year in there.

I use a 4.0 HP Metro Commander dryer (AFTD3). Shop around for price --
ranges from $129 to $149. I was looking for a good value and found this to
be a good product for a reasonable price (I paid $129 and got an additional
$10 discount on a promotion). You can pay more for fancier dryers, but I
didn't want to.

If you are not already doing it, save by buying your shampoo by the gallon
through PetsEdge (or a supplier of your favorite brand). About once a year,
the catalogs have sales for 4-gallon carton purchases of shampoo. Several
members of our club go together. We split the cartons (each of us takes a
gallon or two) and as a result, get an even better discount than we would by
buying a single gallon. Look for concentrated shampoos that you can dilute.
I use All Systems, runs around $27 (1:1 dilution) -- smells like Breck, so
my Berner girls are "Breck girls"!! Hm, wonder what that makes my
Berner boy?

Re: nice question--how to make your dog throw up!

2003-03-25 Thread Susan Wilkinson
Lucky Aeryn just got to be on the receiving end of the hydrogen peroxide. I
got home from work tonight and 'Ryn was outside in the dog pen -- didn't
even rush to the gate to greet me. Hmmm, what's she doing? I guess
when my Dad put out the bag of kitchen garbage he set it on top of instead
of in the garbage can. I got home in time to find the darling girl
polishing off the last of the garbage. Included in said garbage where
chicken wing bones, a big sheet of aluminum foil with salmon skin stuck to
it, tea bags, kleenex, paper towels etc. etc. Well there were only a few
tiny pieces of the aluminum foil left, some scraps of the plastic bag, and 1
tea bag. I couldn't imagine letting her try and pass all that heavy duty
foil, let alone the chicken bones, so out came the dreaded H2O2. Poor
girly, I always hate doing that to her -- the disgusted look on her face!
But up it all came, along with a couple of things I didn't know about (seems
she'd been helping to clean up a couple piles of dog poop .. YUCK!!!)

All's well that ends well, the garbage is now appropriately disposed of,
Aeryn has forgiven me, and was quite adament that she did indeed feel like
having her supper!

Moses was treated with Adriamycin and Cisplatin for his first three chemos
for bone cancer and Adriamycin and Carboplatin for his fourth.
Stat blood work and urinalysis were done before each chemo treatment.
Fourth urine test revealed lower specific gravity that they like to see
which is why carboplatin was used as it is friendlier, so to speak, to the
kidneys, even though the "system" is extensively "flushed" when the
Cisplatin is used.
Moses was only "off his feed" after the second chemo and only for one day

Hello Sherri!

I apologize for somewhat late answer: today I have caught up reading the
archives and I cannot resist answering because I find it very useful and
stimulating. :-)

That wording of their material is important...the Pfizer website states:
"With monthly dosing, Revolution (selamectin) controls American dog tick
(D.variabilis) infestations in dogs and puppies as young as six weeks."

There are two problems with this statement...
First, what does "control...infestations" mean?
Being careful interpreting the words, this is what I see: if it doesn't kill
ticks then the only way to control them is by repelling them. The marketing
is geared towards people who may not think that repellant properties is
enough, they want ticks dead if they do get onto the dog.

I personally think that killing attached ticks is only half of the deal -
you still have to find and remove the dead tick lest it starts festering.
Moreover, if the tick bites into the dog, wouldn't that transmit the Lyme if
the tick is a carrier?

I agree with you that the statements they make are problematic. That's why I
put off Revolution issue till I know more about what other products offer
(sarcoptic mange protection?!) and how things stack up.

The tick variety specificity - it could have been an unexpectedly useful
side effect (reminds me of a tale about one electronic chip specifications
saying "it shouldn't have worked, but it does")

I am much more decisive about my antihistamines... sigh

puppy training question

2003-03-25 Thread Clark & Kris Osojnicki
One thing that can help with the jumping behavior, is to teach sit, and
down. Also, shake hands etc. The more behaviors that the puppy can be told
to do, the better. And, if you are sitting, you can't be jumping etc.

Also, go down to puppies level. Puppies jump up to gain attention. If you
are at the level of the puppy, they do not need to jump up to you.

For the biting, continue to offer them a "legal" thing to chew on. When
they bite you, simply, calmly say no, and then give them something that they
can chew.

This will go away with time. You don't find adult dogs biting there owners!
So, it is a self limiting behavior, but you may not want him/her to continue
to bit for months!

Be consistent. No puppy will learn anything overnight. They need A LOT of
persistent reinforcement. You have to be patient. You are dealing with "a
baby".

Don't expect over-night results.

And, take LOTS of pictures! They don't stay little long enough :)

2 --- Where does your dog spend the night?

Beside one side of my bed, later on the other side of my bed - sometimes in
my bed. He wake himself up and also me by laying in the bed when he ask for
cuddling. He think it is too warm to sleep all night in the bed, he use to
say so. He is free to sleep were he likes to, it is his home as well as mine
and ours.

3 --- What is your dog's favorite toy?

He has a lot of dolls. Vincent call all his toys for dolls - he is a real
boy! He love all stuffed animals and the last he has got is the one he use
to run after to show when friends are coming home.
He often have a toy in his mouth.
He loved the little bear who sang "Oh Susanna..." and when we sang the song
he run after the right animal toy. Just wonder were the Susanna toys are -
probably in a bag waiting for surgery?

4 --- Your dog's most remarkable feature is (fill in the blank)

His ears, we use to say our berners has silky ears. His forehead, the
forehead of a very great philosopher!
Also when he comes to me in the kitchen, sitting on the floor he says -
smiling and with the head marks and pointing out " Mummy, I like some of the
tidbits I have in my pot!"
And also his body:
His front legs and his paws, his front legs are like log´s. Also his whole
body of kindness when he smiles and say hello from his nose to his tip of
the tail.

5 --- You bought a new car for your dog?

No, we have no car. We live very central in Stockholm and we can see all
with cars driving around in the evenings to find a parkingplace, sometimes
they drive around for hours. We use buses and trains and take a cab or get
along with our friends in their car. We like to walk. Vincent has decided
not to take a driving licence.

6 --- Your dog participates in (feel free to list any titles your dog

Parties - he like going to birthday parties, the cakes use to be very good.

7 --- The naughtiest thing that your dog has done is.

Vincent is not a naughty boy. He used to lay on the table in our kitchen
last summer when I was away from home, but naughty behavior - I think just
it was a rather cold place?
This morning he tried to wee-wee on another dogowners leg when we was out on
the big field there our dogs run and play, but naugthy - dogs/males
sometimes use to wee-wee like that.
Vincent is not a naughty boy - he is kindness personified.

LOVE from your mum Vinci!

Less inclined to think cancer in spine

2003-03-25 Thread Lisa D Allen
Today Moses had his second "official" post amputation, chemo (osteosarcoma)
check-up by his specialist at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston.
The doctor is less inclined to feel that there is cancer in the spine since
Moses has improved and is more readily and easily ambulatory. So, we hope
he is in remission. Xrays will be done every three months, with the next
scheduled for May. Moses will continue receiving monthly check-ups at
Angell for now. I believe that weekly aquapuncture is helping Moses a great
deal. One of his nail coverings came off, was chewed off, who knows, so he
will take an antibiotic in case of infection. Moses' attitude is wonderful.
Minute by minute, I am inspired by his courage and optimistic outlook.
While we were in the examining room waiting for Moses' doctor, I became even
more aware of the wisdom in the eyes of an old dog as I looked into Moses',
such depth, so different from the gaze of a pup, who has yet to discover
life's treasures and know its secrets.

becoming a breeder

2003-03-25 Thread William Withey
Dear Lisa,
Yes I know how hard it is to become a breeder. I know that my first
BMD may have problems and I may not be able to breed her. I am not looking
for that quick fix. This is going to be a passionate hobby of mine. I
don't want or even think I will become rich off being a breeder (thats why
I'm becoming a Real Estate Salesperson). I just want to share the great
qualities of the BMD with others.
I love dogs and I love the qualities of the Bernese. I believe I can
do this breed right. I know I can do this and do this well. This is going
to be a long hard road and I am ready to work hard.
  Sincerely,

Happy Birthday JR

2003-03-25 Thread Kim Morrow
JR (which stands for Just Right) is not a Berner however he's lived with
Berners since he was 3 years old. JR was born at the SPCA and I adopted him
at 6 weeks of age. We have been constant companions ever since!!!

JR is a shepherd/retriever cross (or we think anyhow!) and is obedience
trained to Utility level. JR has his ASCA CD (Australian Shepherd Club of
America) as they allow crossbreds to compete in obedience as long as they
are registered with a registering body. JR is registered with the UKC
American Mixed Breed Registry. To register your crossbred, you must show
proof of spay or neuter.

Anyhow I digress, I just wanted to share with everyone that my great boy is
10 years old today!!

Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis to Pancreatic Cancer -- long, with Questions

2003-03-25 Thread Fred Salevsky
  Hello again from Montreal.
When I last posted on Jan. 29, our 7.5 yr. BMC Mick had just been
diagnosed with Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis. He responded well to steroids
and antacids, but feeding was a big problem -- none of the hypoallergenic
diets were working. Mick kept losing weight, and we couldn't get any
follow-up from the vet Internist! We went to the University of Montreal
Faculty of Veterinary Medecine "companion animal clinic" for a follow-up
visit. A "total body X-ray" showed some suspicious shadows in the abdomen
and the ultrasound that afternoon identified a mass close to the pancreas;
biopsy results the next day showed cancerous cells.
I'd never known exactly the meaning of the expression "devastated", as
applied to your own state of being until that day. We were more completely
devastated when, at surgery on Feb. 17, two tumours were located in the
pancreas. Mick underwent a "debulking" of tumour mass and after a day or
so of rough going in the ICU, he came home with us, walking into his house
with a grin, and then flopping onto the floor for 48 hours of near
continuous, contented sleep. He has gained weight (15 lbs. in three weeks)
by eating a wide variety of fresh cooked meat protein, along with cheese
and bread and the occassional multi--Vit. and has had no vomiting or
significant bowel problem since the surgery. He's needed two other
procedures to repair a wound hernia left by the Vet. Surgery resident when
he closed, but we are glad to have gone ahead with the "medium" choice --
vs. closing right away having done nothing or removing the pancreas and
whatever else possible.
Pancreatic tumours are rarely caught and treated at an early enough
stage. The pathology is carcinoma, with some abnormal secreting cells --
this is not lymphoma or malignant histiocytosis or a sarcoma or even an
insulinoma -- and treatment for these is not usually very effective. Since
Mick is doing well and the tumour did not show metastasis to the lymph
nodes taken, we have decided on a little chemotherapy. Three weeks ago he
had a dose of Adriamycin, and last Thursday his second injection, this time
with Carboplatin (Paraplat).
Does anyone out there have any experience with these drugs and BMD's?
The Adriamycin was well tolerated, but the Carboplat seems to have made
Mick lethargic, acting as if he is achy (flu-like symptoms), and made him
nauseous and anorexic. He also seems to have some rear leg weakness &
wobble which developed very soon after the Carboplat. We are watching out
for pancreatitis or infection, but we believe these are chemotherapy
side-effects at the moment.
And now some general comments. Mick's early symptoms were almost
exactly the same as "the gulps". (Thanks for this info!) But Mick had
never had any such symptoms before, and they worsened over a course of
weeks. One of our vets told us that pancreatic tumours are associated with
"strange" oral behaviours in some animals, ie. sidewise grating of the
teeth in cats! We now think of Mick's gulping, swallowing, etc. as his
"cancer symptoms". The eosinophilic gastroenteritis was also likely
secondary to the tumour, and was treated effectively with the steroids --
repeat biopsy at the time of surgery was normal. Please consider
investigating any such abnormal oral/esophageal/gastric behaviours in your
Berner, especially if they arise and worsen in a relatively short period of
time.
We are still very sad that Mick will not be with us for the time we
had hoped. The prognosis is still a matter of weeks to months. But he was
out walking in the Spring weather today, looking at the squirrels,
listening to the traffic, sniffing everything and everywhere, and going up
to strangers and expecting at least a rub and maybe a treat. We love him
and he loves us and he will go on ahead of us with dignity. When it is his
time. Will keep you posted. Thanks.

This is a female who was evaluated for hips and elbows at age 24 months.
She has normal hips that received a rating of "good" which is the middle
ground of normal hips. Her elbows are normal. No "gradation" for normal
elbows is assigned by OFA. Dogs with affected elbows or hips will not
receive a certification number for that particular site (joint) evaluation.

If anyone is interested I wrote a very detailed post to the Berner-L on

Zeus' Acupuncture-addittional info

2003-03-25 Thread K.Jacobs
Everyone must make decisions that they feel are in the best interest of
their dog and their dog's individual situation. This being said, some of
you may not recall Zeus' history and I am listing it here so some of you may
be better able to understand why I have chosen not to pursue bilateral hip
replacements for my sweet, wonderful boy.
I became aware of Zeus' orthopedic problems when he was five months old.
Started doing x-rays at 6 months, that did not show anything. Next x-rays
at 9 months showed severe bilateral elbow dysplasia and mild hip dysplasia.
Elbow surgery was done for FCP's and to correct the radial/humoral
incongruency which was contributing to the elbow problems. Four weeks of
strict crate rest, then extensive rehab. All seemed to be going well. Then
clinical signs of hip dysplasia and patella luxation started. X-rays were
not great, but he was still having good function and quality of life. Eight
months later, suspected torn cruciate turned out to be significant
progression of HD. Both hips are severe, "horrible" are the words of the
examing vet. Elbows doing OK, but are thickened from arthritis, have very
limited range of motion, and some swelling.
What Zeus lacks in soundness, he more than makes up for in love and
temperament. I am managing him in the manner I feel is in his best
interest. No flames please.
I had hoped acupuncture would help to increase his quality of life and am
exploring options to try it again.

I have got to be the happiest PPO on the planet... I close on a house big

around May 1st!!! I'd like to say thanks to Whispering Pines Kennel for
answering my questions, allowing me to gush about their beautiful dog, and
letting me tag along for a Berner bath at the show in Raleigh last Saturday.

After receiving the pedigree of a potential soon-to-be Berner pup, I need
help deciphering the OFA numbers, etc. OFA 4805G24F, EL1751 is what is
listed for the Dam. I think the first number is the Hip cert. my
translation is that she was certified Good at 24 months, and is a female.
Please correct me if I am wrong. I have no clue what so ever as to the
elbow cert. Can anyone clarify? I know the Sire (and Dam's parents) have
Excellent (according to my translation of their OFA numbers; OFA 3870E)
hips, but the elbow number I have no idea of how to translate. Thanks in
advance for all of your help :)

decided to take a pause when the first mitten was completed. I remember my

RE: Bloat

Hi Anne,
Your quote in your post was not mine:-)

It was Ruth Reynolds comment that I highlighted in my post to address an
issue related specifically to volume of food fed. The issue of volume can
be equally applied to water and anyone who has taken a large draught of
cold water will remember the pain in the stomach it can cause, it is all to
do with weight and stress on the supporting stomach ligaments than result
in torsion. You are right there are many causes of bloat and while the
stomach may be empty fermentation in the gut can also result in a distended
stomach ie bloat with the risk of torsion.

While discussing bloat and factors that might contribute to the bloat risk,
keep in mind that not all cases are directly connected to food in the
stomach! Just this summer, a young female drank quite a bit of water as
she
was warm from an unaccustomed amount of exercise during the day; she was in
a
new location and very shortly, she demonstrated bloat symptoms.
Fortunately,
temporary veterinary care and support were immediately available and kept
her
alive until she was transported several miles to a surgical site where her
torsion and volvulus were reduced and a gastropexy performed. It had been
many hours since food had been ingested so don't get a false sense of
security because your dog has an empty tummy - other factors can contribute
to this deadly condition.

Dear List,
Stevie has laid down to eat ever since he was just a wee pup. We tried to
feed him in raised bowls, since we had been told that this was proper for
big dogs. (I am glad now that he was a lazy bum and didnt like to eat in
this fashion!!!) He will take a bite or two, and when he figures that this
is dinner he lays down with the bowl between his legs, if the bowl is a bit
too far away, he sticks his chin in it and pulls it towards himself. When he
is finished eating and if the bowl is empty, whether he is hungry or not, he
stands up, picks up the bowl and brings it to me, or will sit there with is
in his mouth. It is stainless steel. Also, with his big stainless steel
water bowl, if it is getting low on water he will pick this up as well and
deposit at my feet, empty or not!! Likewise with his kitty's stainless steel
bowl. I think he has a fetish with stainless steel!! Gotta love him!!

When Stevie was about 7months old, we were out to the barn to play with my
horse. Stevie got into the machine shed and decided that the large roll of
baler twine was an interesting toy. I was busy in the barn with my big girl,
and never had a worry before about what Stevie was up to whenever we were at
the farm. When I brought my mare out to go to the arena to ride, everywhere
that I cast my eyes were lengths and lengths of bright orange baler twine.
Altogether he unrolled approx. 2000' of twine. He had pulled it , chewed it,
and pulled it some more. When I finally followed the trail, Stevie was
happily sleeping under the tractor on top of a lovely bed of bright orange
twine!! We took him to the vet as well as we werent sure as to whether he
had consumed any of it!! xrays showed minimum amount in his tummy and it
passed with no problems, however he did have a significant amount in between
his teeth, very expensive dental floss!!

Zeus' Acupuncture

2003-03-25 Thread K.Jacobs
Hi All,
Zeus went for his acupuncture treatment yesterday. Unfortunately he was
not very cooperative, it is so painful for anyone to get near his rear end.
He "screamed" each time the vet tried to place the needles and was
struggling to get up. We tried rescue remedy, and he seemed calmer but
still was not cooperative enough to get enough needles in for a full
treatment...sigh.
The vet also gave us some instruction in pet massage. He loves the calm
massage involving the ears and the "snail" massage as long I don't get too
close to the hip areas. I also just started using ice packs in the hip
area, and he seems to like this.
I have also added another holistic supplement for him with Yucca and
Boswellia. Deramaxx is a newer pain/anti-inflammatory drug that we are
using as well.
My other Berner, Titan, seems to understand that Zeus is not feeling well
and has been the perfect "brother". It is quite amazing actually.
Zeus still is able to play for short periods, seems happy and able to
enjoy life. He has a true Berner heart...
Enjoying each day and taking it one step at a time.

Pet therapy - starting young - and other things!!!

2003-03-25 Thread wbneff+
Winston was a Therapy Dog and he enjoyed visiting the nursing home and

relocation department has an affinity program with that facility and others
in our area, where we list and sell the homes of people who are coming to
live at the facility. The administrator of the facility just loved
Winston and sent us such a a caring card and note when Winston crossed the
Bridge. She was so thrilled to learn that we had a new Berner puppy and
she calls Bill during the days he is not teaching sometimes and asks him to
bring Nick to visit. We also take Nick to visit when we go to see
Grandpa. It takes about 20 minutes to go from the lobby of the facility
to Grandpa's room, which is only about a 50 foot walk. Everyone just loves
Nick. Last night when we visited, Nick showed off by doing the nicest
straight 'sit' and just stayed there looking up at me. Of course
periodically I gave him a piece of his kibble and he just waited and
watched for the next piece. They were all impressed. They couldn't
believe that he would be just 3 months old today. It was great
socialization - he got to interact with a worker with a long beard, several
people of different races and ethnic groups, people with canes, wheelchairs
and walkers and then we visited in Grandpa's room and he sniffed
everything, then laid down and went to sleep. What fun!!

Nick is one very socialized Berner. At the Potomac Valley Specialty
several weeks ago, he must have met every person in attendance and most of
the Berners there, too. He sat at my feet at ringside for the whole show
and either watched was was going on in the ring or slept or played with the
people around him. He loved all of the attention and was happy to meet
people of all ages and sizes. If you wanted to find Nick or Cathy Shipe's
darling puppy, Callahan, all you had to do was to look for a crowd of
people "oohing and ahing." Aren't Berner puppies the cutest thing in the
world? After the show on Saturday, Pat Long and I did Berner photos for
several people. When we were done, we did a whole row of Nick, who was
just 9 1/2 weeks at that time. He sat and posed for 24 photos and they
all turned out very nicely.

If you are going to the Specialty in Long Beach next month, be sure to have
Pat take photos of your Berners. It is so nice to "capture" those puppies
while they are so cute and small. I can't tell you how many people have
told us that they were so happy to have had photos taken by Pat because
they lost their Berners not long after the photos were done. It's a real
bargain, too. Pat charges $50 but only $20 of that goes to cover her
expenses and the rest goes to a Berner fund of your choice. You also get
a full set of photos plus the negatives!! We try to get the photos back
so you get them the day after the photos are taken. I think that we've
raised about $10,000 for Berner funds doing these portraits. Pat, is that
number accurate? We will be doing the photos from Wednesday through
Saturday from about 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, we get to watch
conformation!!! Don't miss out on this opportunity.

Pet Therapy - starting young - and other things!!

2003-03-25 Thread wbneff+
Winston was a Therapy Dog and he enjoyed visiting the nursing home and
getting so much attention. The residents loved having a big dog visit
because he was so gentle and calm and they didn't have to stoop over to pet
him. Of course, he'd do the obligatory "Berner Sit on your Shoes" and the
"Berner Lean," but he did the lean ever so gently with the residents.

Now that Winston is at the Rainbow Bridge, Nick is carrying on the Therapy
Dog visits. Nick is three months old today and he is such a sweetie.
Thank you Libby, Kesner, for entrusting this wonderful Berner Baby Boy to
Bill and me.

My husband, Bill, in addition to teaching at the University of Pittsburgh
("Go Panthers!! Playing in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA on Thursday
evening!!!,) does consulting at senior care facilities and at in particular
at a senior care facility that is about a mile from our home. His

Re: Laying down to eat

2003-03-25 Thread Martha Hoverson
Adam asked
Any one else have a "roman eater"?
Yes, Molly frequently eats with the dish between her paws. That's not very
convenient in the kitchen, so she will retreat to the dining room rug,
knowing that her neurotic mommy will follow with the dish. There the usuall
ladylike front legs open for her meal. I've always thought it was because
of her bad elbows, that standing with her weight thrust forward as they must
when standing to eat from a dish on the floor must be uncomfortable. I
tried putting her dish on a stool one day, and she gave me the look that
says, "Mommy, have you gone mad?"

well now? They won't let me run around like a wild girl, and I really,
really want to!)

I wanted to say thank you once again to those who offered support and advice over Kelby's elbow dysplasia. We were going with a non surgery option until I couldn't stand to see her in such pain anymore. She went downhill too rapidly for my liking. We had surgery two weeks ago and her recovery has been incredible. The surgeon is amazed and I think  even at this early stage it was the right thing to do for us. She's a different dog and of course she thinks she's all better! The stitches have just come out and now we keep her quiet and wait and see.
Thanks again. I'm not necessarily advocating surgery. It was an extremely tough decision but in this case I think the right one.

RE: BNN at the National?

Andrea,

Good question, and I don't know the answer! But I do know that Bob
Torstenson spends a good bit of money to do the Berner News Network, and
I know he's gotten a few donations in the past - but not nearly enough
to cover his costs! His efforts are always tremendously appreciated, and
I'd just like to say, THANKS!!

Anyone know if the Berner News Network will be at the National this year
to keep all of us stuck at home informed? I sure hope so! :o)
