Weather:
Gray clouds hung low and thick to start the morning, but it wasn't long
before bits of blue began to peek through. By early afternoon, blue sky
reigned, offset by some helpful cumulus that stuck around until completion.
Temperatures remained chilly for a second straight day, rising no higher
than the low 50s. The wind, light and out of the west early, strengthened
and shifted north late.

Raptor Observations:
Mouth agape in stunned silence, feverishly clicking away in a state of
joyous agitation. My demeanor rarely wavered for a three hour stretch this
afternoon as an unending parade of Turkey Vultures crossed the lake, eerily
calm and quiet as always. Just when it appeared as if that was the end of
it, the next swirling column would appear off in the hazy distance, itching
to move. An unforgettable outing, the 14,293 vultures counted today is the
third highest single-day total in the count's history and the highest since
the record-setting fall of 2010.

Non-raptor Observations:
Sandhill Crane (2), Tundra Swan (19), Blue Jay (800+), American Crow
(650+), Red-winged Blackbird (450+), Rusty Blackbird (55+), Tree Swallow
(6000+), Palm Warbler (1), Yellow-rumped Warbler (6), Ruby-crowned Kinglet
(4), Golden-crowned Kinglet (1), American Goldfinch (35+), Pine Siskin
(20+), House Finch (4), Killdeer (1)

Predictions:
Clear skies with warmer temps and strong south wind.

Visitors:
The nice weather brought many people to the tower today, especially in the
late afternoon when everyone enjoyed large numbers of Turkey Vultures
forming huge nearby kettles. Many thanks to those who helped spot hawks
while Turkey Vultures streamed by in the hundreds.

Weather:
Winds were out of the northwest all day and very light (many times less
than 5km/h). The day started off chilly but after the sun came out in the
late morning, it ended up being quite comfortable on the tower.
Temperatures ranged from 4.3C in the morning to 15.6C in the mid-afternoon.
Pressure stayed around 30.44 for most of the day. Cloud cover was 90% in
the morning and by late afternoon, 30% or less.

Raptor Observations:
Turkey Vultures soared over in large number once again today w/ 5,772 birds
total. 3-4pm saw the largest kettles; 1,845 birds were counted in this hour
alone. At times, vultures were streaming to the far north, over the marsh,
and south of the tower at varying altitudes making counting quite
challenging! Red-shouldered Hawk and Red-tailed Hawk numbers are growing w/
9 and 60 individuals seen, respectively. Many of these were identifiable
only by scope as they appeared as specks in the blue to the naked eye. In
the morning, an immature Peregrine Falcon was observed trying to catch an
American Coot in the marsh, only to be harassed by a group of Ring-billed
Gulls. It flew within feet of the tower then dived at a flock of Blue Jays
but was unsuccessful. The highlight though came shortly after 11am when one
Turkey Vulture in a stream of birds didn't quite look right...it was a
juvenile Golden Eagle! Great looks as it flew directly over the tower.

Non-raptor Observations:
The marsh continues to have a good diversity of duck species as well as
high numbers of American Coots and some Pied-billed Grebes. Two shorebird
species flew by the tower today: Greater Yellowlegs (3) and Pectoral
Sandpiper. Blue Jay numbers were similar to yesterday at 2,040 birds.
American Crow numbers are starting to grow w/ 790 counted today. Tree
Swallows continue to migrate past the tower. 39 were seen. American Pipits
flew over in flocks of 10s totaling 48 birds. Red-winged Blackbirds were in
good number w/ 4,130 birds flying east to west, mostly in the morning
hours. Finally, a good diversity of finches continues w/ House Finch,
Purple Finch, American Goldfinch, and Pine Siskin all seen and heard.

Predictions:
Temperatures are predicted to start in the 40s and reach 60C by the
mid-late afternoon w/ 30-35km/h south winds. No precipitation is expected.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa Field Naturalists’ Club (OFNC), the annual Wild Goose Chase.

2015-10-18 Thread Richard Waters
This morning I led an outing for members of the Ottawa Field Naturalists’
Club (OFNC), the annual Wild Goose Chase. This year, for a change, we
thought that the ‘East End’ of town would deliver the goods. The day began
at Wall Road and Giroux Ponds with widespread flurries and temperatures
down to -4 degrees Celcius. There was a good selection of shorebirds
including; 1 Hudsonian Godwit, 2 American Golden Plover, 3 Pectoral
Sandpiper, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper, 7 Killdeer, 1 Dunlin and nearby, a
Wilson’s Snipe in flight.

A field full of Turkey Vultures (30), on Dunning Road, were nearly mistaken
for Wild Turkeys. Other raptors included; 12 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Northern
Harrier and a Cooper’s Hawk.

Other highlights were; 3 Sandhill Cranes on Milton, a large flock of pipits
(100+) and Grackles (150+). The 7 Evening Grosbeaks were not totally
unexpected for two thirds of the group, who stayed on after lunch.

We finished with 38 species and disappointingly, only one goose species
(Canada). It would seem that most of Ottawa’s geese are still in the West
End.

[Ontbirds] Hudsonian Godwit & 13 Snow Geese at Cranberry Marsh

2015-10-18 Thread Wayne Renaud
Today I spend 3.5 productive hours at the hawk watch and the Hudsonian
Godwit was showing well on the mudflats opposite the south observation
tower for about 45 minutes around 2:00 pm. The Snow Geese were with a
loose group of about 300 Canada Geese feeding in the field east of Halls
Road just north of Cranberry Marsh and easily seen with Binoculars. Other
shorebirds: 9 Pectoral Sandpipers, 5 Lesser Yellowlegs and 3 Dunlin.

Directions: exit the 401 at Brock Street (not Brock Road); Victoria (2
blocks); west to Halls Road.

Also present there were both yellowlegs, Killdeers, White-rumped Sandpipers,
Semipalmated Sandpiper and Least Sandpiper.
The best viewing is obtained by walking into the conservation area on the west
side of the pond and following the path into the cedar woods, It opens up into
a clearing, providing an excellent view of the mudflats.
