[Ontbirds] Snow Geese East of Ottawa (East of Casselman - West of St. Isadore)

2011-12-07 Thread Connie Denyes
From noon today (December 7th) until mid afternoon, we saw thousands of Snow
Geese (perhaps 20 thousand plus) in the area between Highway 138/417 and St.
Isadore. Our first sighting was of thousands of Snow Geese landing to join
others in a field on the South side of Lafleche Road. As we drove the roads
north of Hwy 417 between Casselman and St. Isadore over the next couple of
hours the sky was frequently filled with ribbons of Snow Geese as far as we
could see. With binoculars we could easily identify every one of these huge
waves of geese that passed near us as Snow Geese. We did not see any of
these flocks descend to land. As we were leaving the area we stopped by
Lafleche Road again and the large volume of Snow Geese we had seen earlier
were still in the field there. Awesome sights!

Directions: From Highway 417 (Queensway) take exit 58 (Highway 138 S / Moose
Creek). Proceed South on Highway 138 and turn right at the first street,

road. Snow Geese in flight were observed from Concessions 19, 20 and 21.
Take Highway 138 North over Hwy 417 and turn right onto Concession 20 to
reach the area.

The Greater Yellowlegs and Wilson's Phalarope at the Embrun Sewage Lagoon
reported by Chris Lewis April 27, were still there today. We saw two
Greater Yellowlegs and one Wilson's Phalarope (f) at that location this

[Ontbirds] Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes East of Ottawa

2010-10-23 Thread Connie Denyes
Around noon today there were 2500+ Snow Geese in the sod fields at the
corner of Highway 138 and Lafleche Road, just south of Highway 417. There
were some blue morphs in the group. There was a large flock on each side of
Lafleche Road, one mixed with Canada Geese and the other mixed with Canada
Geese and gulls.

Later in the afternoon around 4:00 pm, there were 80+ Sandhill Cranes in the
fields off Smith Road just west of Milton Road (opposite house # 612).
Initially we spotted a small group, then a larger group, then more flew in
to join the larger group. They were quite a distance from the road but
could be viewed with binoculars and even better with scopes. Two Snow Geese
(one a blue morph) were among the Canada Geese in the same fields. We were
not able to locate the Hudsonian Godwit last reported in the fields at Smith
and Milton roads on October 19th.

[Ontbirds] Amherst Island - Boreal Owl

2009-01-20 Thread Connie Denyes
Early this afternoon, Tuesday, January 20th one Boreal Owl was seen deep in

secluded, tucked up against the trunk of the tree and surrounded by many
branches. Once you knew where it was, it was easily visible through the
branches from a safe distance. We are very thankful to the kind birder who
had seen it fly in there earlier in the day and showed us (and others) the
location.

Two Short-eared Owls were also observed in the Owl Woods and 8 Snowy Owls

[Ontbirds]Great Egret, High Falls Conservation Area, Casselman ON

2008-08-04 Thread Connie Denyes
On Sunday, August 3rd around 3:00 pm, Jane Burgess and I saw a Great Egret
at the High Falls Conservation Area in Casselman Ontario. The Egret was on
the rocky shore of the river, preening, quite a distance from our view which
was below the falls on the opposite shore. Although I neglected to
specifically look for banding, I do not recall any being present and none
can be observed from very distant photos taken at the time.

[Ontbirds]Migrating Shorebirds - East of Ottawa

2008-06-29 Thread Connie Denyes

Tony Beck's group visited several habitats east of Ottawa this morning (June
29th) in search of migrating shorebirds and we found several at the
Casselman Lagoons! Birds observed were: Short-billed Dowitcher (1),
Greater

Yellowlegs (2), Lesser Yellowlegs (7), and Least Sandpiper (9).

Directions to Casselman Lagoons (courtesy of NeilyWorld): From Highway 417
(The Queensway), 52 km east of Ottawa, take the Casselman exit (66) and go
NNW toward the town of Casselman. Drive 1.1 km NNW into town on Rue
Principale, crossing the railway tracks and the main cross-street (St.
Isidore), to turn right or northeast just beyond onto Laurier. Follow
Laurier northeast, then north, 1.8 km to Concession 5 Road (or Route 500).
Turn right or northeast onto it and the road into the Casselman Sewage
Lagoons is on your right almost immediately.

[Ontbirds] Capspian Tern, Red-necked Phalarope, Arctic Tern -- Ottawa West

2008-05-31 Thread Connie Denyes
A group birding with Tony Beck saw a Caspian Tern this morning on the ponds
on Moodie Drive. Also present were 10 Short-billed Dowitchers, 100 Dunlin
and 60-70 peeps predominantly Semi-palmated Sandpipers. A coyote strolled
along the far shore and eventually onto the sandbar sending all the
shorebirds into the air during its brief visit.

On the Ottawa River, viewed from the Britannia Conservation Area, were two
Red-necked Phalaropes quite a distance from the shore. Also present was 1
Arctic Tern, several Common Terns, and 12 Bonaparte's Gulls.

Earlier in the morning during the heavy rain we had good views of very wet
Vesper, Grasshopper, Clay-coloured, Savannah and Song Sparrows in the fields
south of the airport.
