[Blind-Computing] final message before the list is shutdown
This is the final day for posting on this list: I would like to take a minute to thank those of you who have made this list a success especially to Bob, Rick and also Alex for his brief time as a moderator on here. We decided a couple of weeks ago that this would be the last day we would keep the Blind Computing list in business since the general consensus is that it has run its course. We are not closing down completely as the JAWS Users List will remain open for the foreseeable future. The fact is that list is much easier to moderate since it has a narrower guideline to follow so it is more cut and dry as to what is or is not on topic. We received several messages of thanks to this announcement and also a death threat believe it or not. Some people's kids get a little too demanding at times. Thank you all for contributing in this endeavor and with luck we'll meet again on the information superhighway. It saddens me to write this but these things happen, take care folks and stay well. It occurs to me that since there hasn't been an update for over a year that the security of this program might be in question. I do not know this and as such am asking for any information you folks out there might have in this area. You can't complain about the interface and if memory serves they were going to add video support but since it hasn't happened my guess is that they dumped the project. According to his private message to those of us who manage this list we should all be shot for shutting it down. Interesting since we do it as a hobby and expect or receive no compensation for doing it other than the rare event that one of us receives a donation to help offset the cost. If anybody wants to start their own mailing list they are certainly free to do so and in many cases utilize a number of free services available for such a forum. Nobody has offered so to speak to take over this list and even if somebody wanted to step up they would have to start from the beginning. The membership list is only available to the three of us and I will not allow it to be shared with anybody else. In other words it is a private database and as such is confidential. This is especially true for those who have never posted on the list. Never the less any more posts like the message I am replying to and this list won't make it until lunch time never mind next Friday. The tool bar idea is good thinking, I agree it is a possibility. Personally I like my display set to classic, but that's just me. Also the screen resolution is hard to say. For example on my system that I recently upgraded from XP Media Center to 7 pro the recommended screen resolution is different even though nothing else has changed. Also each monitor does have its own native settings from the manufacturer, so like I say that is a tuff call. Never the less we have given hopefully enough information pointing in the right direction. First of all if it is XP then by default it is 32 bit. That is because no adaptive software so far as I know offers built in support for XP 64 bit. It is best to hook in to the jacks on the back of the unit as they are not amplified for better sound quality. You go to an electronics store and tell them you need a cable one end will plug in to a computer sound card and the other in to a stereo tape deck. Anyway, it is a wireless networked device. How people have previously used the scanner is to access the touch screen to tell the scanner where the scanned image should go. This of coarse is not working for me as a blind person. Thus, I am trying to access the unit from the computer. I brought up the basic fax and scan program for windows which told me that there was simply no scanner or fax machine connected to the computer. On double checking the drivers, I found that there are no scanner/fax drivers installed. So, I went to the canon website, and after finding the driver down load page tried to locate the scanner drivers. All I can find are the printer and fax drivers. I tried to install the fax driver. However, even though I can see that the driver is installed, the windows fax and scan program still does not recognize it. I have two questions. First, how do I find the driver to install for the canon scanner. Second, how do I get windows to recognize that it has a driver for a fax machine installed? It seems to me that if it cannot recognize the fax driver, it would not recognize a scanner driver either. Any help is appreciated. God bless, Mark God loves You! You can also probably find good or reasonably good discussions of Libraries by looking up information on the Internet. [Blind-Computing] to those people receiving digest messages
I did another adjustment last evening to the threshold limit as to when a new digest will be dispatched. Hopefully it will be not too large but also not take too much time between postings. The last digest was almost a mega byte which was an error on my part placing too many zeros in the field for the size of it. Blame it on the hour of the day when I did that and call it good. At this point all new digests will be triggered at 250 KB. With luck that will be a happy medium. [Blind-Computing] modification to the digest settings
By request I have just increased the size of the daily digest that those members who receive list traffic in that manner will notice. The amount of digests that you will receive will decrease but the size of them will increase by almost a factor of 7. You will still receive all list mail but in larger bunches. I hope this works out for most of you out there because no way will it work out for everybody experience has shown me in the past. Maybe because of screen echo settings with Jaws or otherwise,the user is not hearing this command when it is activated. I haven't looked for a way to disable this keystroke,so I don't even know at this point if that is possible. While in Winamp, if you look in the Playback sub-menu, you will find the command listed. I am not the source of that information, but I am happy to share it. It worked for me on 2 windows 7 systems. You're welcome, I spent about an hour a few days ago just making that page up then posting it because that is information I feel worth sharing. No if memory serves there is another tablet, unfortunately the name of it does escape me at the moment. From what I understand the iPad is the most accessible. If it is like it's smaller cousins the iPhone for example then it is quite blind friendly. Mind you those devices are best used with the native applications that come already installed. Some times third party applications can be a little hit and miss so in those cases I always look for somebody who has previously tried said program before. There are a few differences between Jaws 13 Jaws 14, but nothing that you can't quickly overcome with a simple Jaws+H to bring up the Jaws Help command. Since Jaws is working on a 64 bit operating system, it stands to reason it will also work on the 32 bit version, and just as, if not more, stable. I'm using Internet Explorer 9 64 bit, and other than issues with Adobe's Flash Player still containing unlabled buttons, web site designers that deserve to be swatted with a rolled up newspaper, it works well. I'm using Office 2010 Professional 64 bit, and while most of my use has been in Word Outlook, I'm fairly certain it works well in most of the Office suite. Using Outlook with Jaws 14 has been interesting, but mostly because I'm still getting used to the Ribbon User Interface (UI). It takes some getting used to, and trying to find things can be frustrating, but eventually you remember the shortcuts you use most often, and the work flows easier. I'm using Open Book 9, and that's a breeze to use with Jaws 14. It doesn't get much easier to hit the Space Bar to make it scan, then Control+S to Save the scan. I *seriously* recommend changing the default Save location to your My Documents folder, as that will speed up finding the files you've saved later. (I've created an OpenBook folder in My Documents, and everything goes there. Simple, straight forward, no confusion.) I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials Windows Defender, both of which are simple easy. Windows Update keeps them current, even if I hadn't already set them to update themselves on a daily basis, and they run a Full System Scan every day to make sure my system is secure. Unless it starts beeping at me to read the generated report file, you can be sure the system is clean. I'm running Windows Firewall, and while that's a pain to navigate, it can be done, and setting it to block any unauthorized traffic can be accomplished. Again, it's not easy, but that's more because it's an Advanced Tool and requires a bit of learning in order to use properly. I'm using MalWare Bites, and that's simple as well. It is an easy matter to TAB between the buttons until you can set it to Full Scan, then TAB to the Scan Now button. When it's done, it pops up a Notepad Text document of the issues it's found (if any), the actions it took upon them (if any), and what Registry Enteries, Folders, Files, or Programs it found that require your attention. (If everything reads Zero Items Found, then you don't have to save the report, and can ALT+F4 the report MalWare Bites closed with a clear head.) I run a daily Windows BackUp to an external hard drive. This is a fairly simple task, and the program is well laid out to allow you to quickly set up this process, as well as having it run automaticly in the background. (Just make sure the external hard drive is plugged in before the BackUp starts, or you'll feel sheepish when you realize your gaff.) Windows 7 uses the Start Search feature as the basis of it's User Interface. Any time you want something, hit the Windows Key (second from the Left of the Space Bar) and it brings up a Search box. Type in what you want, for example Word to launch Microsoft Word, and it finds (most, if not all of) the occurrences of that Search term, presents them as potential links to Arrow Key to, and hit Enter to launch. You can Pin items to the Start Menu, to the TaskBar, or to the QuickLaunch bar, but realisticly, you're better off just typing in the search term in the Search Box, and letting Windows find it for you. Shortcuts on the desktop are still Accessable, and you can always drop things there you like to find frequently, but again, using the Search Box saves a lot of time. At any time you can hit the Windows Key plus M to bring up the desktop, and navigate with the Arrow Keys through the icons shortcuts, but it may be less of a Hunt the Wocket to just use the Search Box instead. Have I mentioned using the Search Box? Hu, I think I may have once or twice. *Laughing merrily* In short, Jaws 14 on Windows 7 is a very good combination. You'll quickly be up running, and even if the Ribbon User Interface drives you batty, you should still be able to get around your computer fairly easily. Hope this helps.
