2010-05-09 Thread Seth Russell
mp3 files already have been compressed when they are made. I believe there
are also settings in most software which specifies how much. I doubt that
it is necessary to zip them unless you are making a large library of them
and just want to transmit one file rather than many.

Re: [Blind-Computing] external Mp3 player question

2010-03-24 Thread Seth Russell
Couple of things could be wrong. (1) Some players need to turned on
before the computer can recognize them. (2) You are not making a good
connection either with the unit or the computer. Try another USB port
or even another cable. (3) Your unit could be defective. (4) The
auto run is not being fired but the dirve is there and accessible. In
that case browse for it in windows explorer under your computer.

What is the mp3 player and where did you get it?

Starting with the file ment, save as, then in the dialogue box under
file type set that to all files, then make sure that you name the
file something.html. That's all there is to it. If you don't choose
all files, i believe that note pad will affix a .txt on the end of
whatever you designate as the file name.

Word should work just fine for creating a flyer and yes it is supposed
to be accessible. Just write your text on a 8 1/2 by 11 format and
increase your font and margins so that it fills up the page. Then
write the file to a thum drive or a cd and take it to your printer or
transmit it to Fedex office (see url below) or take it to them. I'm

Well i don't use Word. But if you are on a PC, and if you don't want
to put graphics in your flier, there is no reason not to just use
notepad. In fact if you want to include the text here, i could format
it on the screen and send it back to you ... or alternatively give you
instructions for that. But if you insist on using Word, maybe
somebody else can help you.

One bit of a quirk I have with my thumb drive is that when I connect it to
my player it says cartridge error, but if I pull it out and push it in again
 it works fine.
 Just a tip to share.

So let me get this painfully straight.  You can download to a thumb
drive and then play the downloaded file on the NLS player by putting
the thumb drive in the USB slot of the player?  If that is true, then
why would anyone purchase a special purpose cartridge when you can get
a thumb drive  these days for next to nothing and use it for all kinds
of other things ?  Has anyone actually done that successfully?

It is, since, for example, I work in the backend HTML markup, which comes
down to text editing, so the following would be around the simplest webpage

 source:
 html

 h2 align=centerHeading on page/h2

Fact is that you can also use various other bits of software to handle
layout, but they just generate bits of markup, like
 the ...align=center...
bit of the markup above to handle layout etc, and while quite a few of them

might make it quicker and easier to generate web content, it really depends

on what/how much you want to do therewith, and while I have my own website,

I don't understand. The players are free if you are blind. The
Library of congress locks their publications to their players because
they are publishing materials that sighted people normally would need
to pay for. They are giving these materials to the blind for free.
But they can only do that if they can limit the ability to distribute
this copy righted material freely on the net. Or at least that is the
way i understand NLS. If i have gotten it wrong, please enlighten me.

Re: [Blind-Computing] problum sending atachments of songs to people

2010-02-03 Thread Seth Russell
You might try uploading your song to tagtalking.net and then just
sending them the URL of the song. Sending long email attachments can
be a bit of a problem through some email systems. Also if you send it
to multiple people, then you need to upload it each time. And each of
your recipients has similar problems when they download it. Why not
just upload it to the internet once and point to it when you want
somebody to listen.

Re: [Blind-Computing] problum sending atachments of songs to people

2010-02-03 Thread Seth Russell
Both send space and tag talking are good solutions. Let me clarify
the difference. Send space dot com provides you with a one time
private communication. Tag talking dot net provides you with a public
place where you song stays and can be accessed by anyone and even
indexed and found by web searches. Personally i think that many
people keep there stuff private for no good reason when what they
really need or want is to put it out there and rub it up against the
world.

to multiple people, then you need to upload it each time.  And each of
your recipients has similar problems when they download it.  Why not
just upload it to the internet once and point to it when you want
 somebody to listen.

Why is that better than just using your bookmark tool bar? Is that
accessible to you? Wouldn't that be a whole lot faster to maintain than
writing an HTML page? Another advantage of the tool bar approach to
frequented sites is that it is always available, not just when you start at
your home page.

2010-01-03 Thread Seth Russell
Yep, probably wasn't a valid web address. To find the correct format save a
page from the web to your hard drive, then try to open it with the Open File
Menu of your web browser. Then look at the address bar in your web browser
and you will know what the correct format is.

t will be something like:
C:\homepage\bookmarks.html
or
file:///C:/homepage/bookmarks.html
depending on your web browser and/or operating system

Re: [Blind-Computing] Distribution List Question

2009-12-26 Thread Seth Russell
Send them invitations. I do believe that these sites provide a process for
inviting people to join. You might loose a large percentage of your people
in the process ... people don't want to change. But if you have loyal
devoted followers, they should all come over. Another disadvantage is that
these groups are prone to pick up spammers. But you can control that by
limiting who can post to the group. Alternatively you could switch ISPs,
curtailing distribution lists seems a bit draconian to me.

  Subject: [Blind-Computing] Coby MP3 Player!

   Hello all,
Well my wife decided to be nice to me and buy the new Coby MP3 Player
 for
me. Can't wait to get it! One note though. It works best with IE 8 to
 order
from there site. She had some problems using Firefox. JAWS wasn't
 reading
the buttons to check out and a couple of other ones I can't remember.

You might try hooking the earphone jack from the satelite TV to the line in
on the computer.

 Hi guys

wonder if anyone could help? I am recording from TV satellite on to my

find a way of removing it.

I have gold wave and have tried to filter the sound out, but it then
distorts the rest of the recording

I've replaced the cable and tried a different computer, with no change, so
I can only assume it's something to do with my satellite box.

 any help would be appreciated.

 thanks in advance

Really nothing strange about it. Just view source in your browser and then
read everything in the file, especially if you can read HTML ... blind or

The ACB Braille Forum has an article about a totally accessible site.
www.suitablemovies.com. is designed strictly for screen readers. There is
no visible text only a short message stating that the site is for blind or
low vision individuals using screen readers. The site has information about
all described movies in the U.S. and the UK and a rating system for their
 usability for blind viewers.
The site is written with hidden code that can only be accessed with
 screen readers.

Alternatively you could get a 4GB unit, same 5 buttons, for $26.95 and you
get a CD with audio instructions read by yours truly.

I just received my Coby MP200 MP3 player from JR, and it is truly simple
and totally blind accessible. On top of the unit is the earphone jack into
which you plug the included earbuds. The front panel has 5 discrete buttons
arranged in a vertical column. From top to bottom, the buttons are skip
forward, play/pause/power, skip backward, volume up and volume down.
Pressing and holding the second button from the top for 5 seconds turns the
unit on, and pressing and holding it again for 5 seconds turns it off.
That's all there is to it. The bottom of the unit has a USB connector that
plugs directly into a USB port, although a separate USB cable is also
included. You just plug it into your PC and copy and paste the MP3 files
you want to download. Just install the included AAA battery and you're good
to go. The sound quality is surprisingly good, at least using a better pair
of earbuds than the included ones. There is absolutely no learning curve,
and no sighted assistance is required to use it. The included software,
which I have not tried yet, is fully JAWS accessible. With 2gb of memory,
it can hold up to 1,000 songs. This is probably the best blind accessible
MP3 deal ever. It is still available from JR for $10 with free shipping,
but they probably won't last much longer at that price. They make wonderful
stocking stuffers. The hardest part of using this gizmo is getting it out
of the plastic blister pack which requires a heavy duty scissors to cut
 open.
