For how long does this problem persist? Maybe there just haven't been any new messages posted these days; just guessing as I'm not subscribed there but checking the part of the group's site I can still access I see right now there are only 13 messages archived for October 2011. Also make sure in Windows Mail/Windows Live Mail in view/show or hide submenu that show all messages is checked in case it just got changed for some reason. Re: [Blind-Computing] networking windows 7 with XP
Although doesn't really count, I have relatively recently connected someone's windowsXP PC to my windows7 64 bit machine using a crossover/twisted pair network cable, and on both machines we specifically just made sure they were both using TCPIP, with the same subnet mask, and assigned them relatively similar virtual IP addresses (not too sure that's the right terminology, but it means made one of them 192.168.1.100 and the other 192.168.1.101 since those are IP addresses that don't really get used in real world), and then on both machines, selected a specific folder and on something like tools menu in windows explorer told them to render as shared, and made some changes to sharing permissions, and then we could copy files backwards and forwards using something like run \\machineName\folderName on both of them, but this was a rather temporary, quickfix idea and don't honestly remember too many details, but, think it was making use of TCPIP4 or thereabouts, and it did work, but anyway. It crossed my mind yesterday to try and figure out if it is possible to only share selected directories with certain systems. For example only share a specific directory with my lap top and the same with my XP tower. This would be in effect a further step toward locking down the network. Granted my router has a 20 digit password so anybody who gets in there is pretty sharp so far as that goes. I just wondered is all if that were something possible. This is probably why they offer entire courses in networking and the fact is I am flying in the face of the unknown. Interesting approach, unfortunately that wouldn't be practical here because of the physical layout of our house. Update your Eset signature files, though I assume you had done that , but doesn't hurt to mention it, then do a scan. I'd also download a free/trial copy of Malware Bytes and update its files and do another scan. I have m.republicianherald.com for the mobile version of our newspaper. When I click on the link prior to the local temp it brings up an accuweather page for my home town. Now on that page there is an extended forecast. When I click on that it displays state college weather. However, the actual address has my zip code. I ran 3 different spyware programs including combofix. It has not corrected the problem. I then used firefox with the same result so it has to be in my system. My wife셲 lap top works fine. A few months ago a similar problem was there only the site that it tried to take me to was listed as profanity. I ran eset and the same anti spyware programs and combofix made a registry change that corrected the problem. It now is not making the correction. --- Please visit my home page, it is motivational, educational, inspirational with a touch of humor. Re: [Blind-Computing] Switching Windows 7 to Classic View
hey all, why not install the clasic shell? something that you may get by searching through the search engines? -- From: Scorpio Forever scorpio...@gmail.com Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 10:27 AM To: blind Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] Switching Windows 7 to Classic View Hi All, I've tried and tried, but to no avail. I am running a Toshiba L500 laptop with Windows 7 64 bit edition home. I am trying to get Windows to appear like Classic Windows, but for the life of me, I simply can't do it. I should also say that I'm using Jaws 11 latest build 64 bit edition. I've gone and sought out the Microsoft Technical bulletin on how to do this, but some of the steps they're suggesting just aren't there. A perfect example is how they tell you to switch to the classic start menu. They say to go to the Control Panel, then to appearances and personalization's, then to the personalization link, then to taskbar and start menu properties, then to the start menu tab, and on that tab, you're supposed to select classic start menu. Well, first and foremost, the appearances and personalization link isn't there, and while the personalization and taskbar and start menu properties links are there, this selection to choose the classic start menu is simply not there. All I've got on that tab is a customize button, and a few other things, like show recent programs and recent files checkboxes, and one other thing, but like I said, I've gone through the entire thing, and nothing is thee. So, does anyone have any suggestions? I've also found that the start menu has two icons for Internet Explorer, one for 64 bit, and another stating just Internet Explorer. I figured out that it's the second one I want, but there isn't even one on the desktop. I've got other icons like computer and control panel on the desktop, but the important ones like Internet Explorer and a few others I was looking for just aren't there. So, can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Please? Thanks. Re: [Blind-Computing] Switching Windows 7 to Classic View
Hi Scorpio, You have answered your own question really. There is no classic Windows like there was in Vista or earlier. You are stuck with the Windows 7 look and feel. The only thing you can do is change the theme to Windows Classic. This will remove the desktop from the alt+tab list, as well as turn off things like aero that we don't really need anyway. But that is all you can do. Sorry. Re: [Blind-Computing] Installing Windows 7
Hi Mark, you can do the install without sighted assistance, but it is recommended that for the first few times when booting from the DVD you get someone to make sure that you're selecting the right options etc. Alternatively you can install inside your current version of Windows. Your screen reader will speak the first part of install, then setup will do the rest for you till it's ready for you to complete the last phase, in which you can bring up Narrator with Windows U, tab once, space, enter. Second, drivers are not simple to discuss. If you originally had Vista, then most likely you'll already have drivers for Windows 7. If you had XP then problems may occur, i.e., some drivers may not work without going through Windows update. What I would do is consider a dual boot situation, so you have the current Windows on your main partition or drive and Windows 7 on the next available partition or drive. That way should you experience problems you won't need to worry about the loss of your current operating system. Hope this helps, and good luck. -- Chris Hallsworth e-mail: christopher...@googlemail.com MSN: ch9...@hotmail.com Yahoo! I do have some questions though. First is this a project I can do on my own or do I need sighted help? Second, what does a person do about the drivers. I have no idea how to back them up nor how to reinstall them under windows 7. Any thoughts are appreciated.
