[BlindHandyMan] worm eviction

2006-10-22 Thread tunecollector
Inspired by earlier posts, I put one styro-foam cooler with the requisite
holes into another styro-foam cooler. I put a screen onto the floor of the
top cooler. Then into that I put shredded newspaper, soil, vegetation
matter, and 600 wildly procreating red wrigglers. Ravenous little buggers.
It is time for me to change the soil. Is there an efficient method of
separating the worms from the soil or is it tweezer time?

Hi,
I like

Are they similar?

I need a new wet/dry shop vac and am told that the new plastic tub units

Well, I've been whining for a year or so about how much I need one of those
Tissot vibrating watches that cost $400 or so. And, my wife I believe was
going to buy me one for Xmas. Yesterday though, I decided I could save
money and really be happier buying a compressor, which I've also been
 whining about not having.

So, after I got the clearance from my wife, I checked around a bit and
finally bought a small relatively inexpensive one from Harbor Freight.

I was able to get the compressor, hose, coupling set, blow gun, 3/8 drill
and 3/8 air ratchet for about $160.00, and that includes shipping.
And, since I saved us so much money, I'm going to have another 30 amp line
put on the breaker box in the basement, which is something else I've wanted
 for a while.

BTW, I got really good service from the folks at Harbor Freight.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] putting up shelves

2006-10-22 Thread rj
Did the same system here. Except I did it with 7/16 OSB board in the
basement and garage. Several people liked the system and did the same in
their garage and basement. In the basement I screwed 2x4 to the plate and
screwed the bracket rail to the 2x4 in a area that is shaped like a J.
Giving me shelving 8x 12x25 feet four shelves high, or a total of 180
feet. Sure improved the basement by giving us a lot of storage at a very
reasonable cost.

 Hi Robert.

You can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs. Shelf brackets have
to
be secured to the studs and to do that you need to put long screws through
the paneling into the studs. Sue and I did this very thing within the
last
year. The best and best looking is a system that is available from Lowe's
and Ace hardware and I imagine any home improvement store. There are
vertical metal rails that mount to the studs with wood screws. There are
slots in the rails that hold horizontal metal shelf supports. They slide
in
and down, locking in place. Then you set the shelves on top of the
supports. It usually takes a little tapping with a hammer to make the
supports go all the way down and lock securely into the vertical rails.
The
shelves, which are particle board covered with something like Formica,
come
in lengths of 2, 4, and 6 feet, and widths of 8, 10, and 12 inches. The
metal parts are painted the same color as the shelf finish. Hope this
 helps.

 Regards.

My wife and I have an over abundence of stuff. Most of it i call jjunk
but
that is my opinion not hers.
I have an extra bedroom that is just a large storage closet at this time
  and
I also have a lot of wall space upstairs that could be put to good use.
My question is what would be the most cost affective way of putting up
an
extreme amount of shelving without looking too tacky and doing minimal
damage to the panniling. The walls in this house are all pannelled, save
  the
  bathroom.
I need help before I find myself baried under a huge pile of boxes.

robert,
what we have, and they are un fancy in the extreme, are many sets
of steel utility shelving from Sears or the like.

they're often not much more than $25.00 or so for an 18 by 36

easy to put together with only a screwdriver and pretty cheap.
And you don't have to bolt them to anything unless you're in

Re: [BlindHandyMan] putting up shelves

2006-10-22 Thread Dale Leavens
That was going to be my suggestion too, there is a huge variety of that sort
of shelving available and of varying grades to very substantial.
Alternately, you could build free standing units, this is not necessarily
cheap but it does preserve the paneling in the event you don't always want
shelves there.

Drywall and plaster can always be patched and repainted but the paneling
will remain more holy than righteous.

Building I would recommend nothing less than three quarters plywood and you
might like to use solid wood to form face frames or apply that edging to
cover the edge of the wood. Not cheap but you can customize for a good fit.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] taking tiles off of wall.

2006-10-22 Thread Dale Leavens
You might like to pad a hammer or acquire a rubber mallet and tap the face
of the tiles, not so hard as to bust through the substrate behind but to
loosen the bond and the grout a little before going at them with a putty
knife. You will likely damage the board behind the tiles if they were at all
well stuck on. I don't think it can be avoided but tapping them may disturb
the bond enough to make them come away easier.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] A Very Simple Verticle Level, Blind Technique

2006-10-22 Thread Dale Leavens
I have a wonderful level I bought in England nearly 40 years ago for only a
few dollars, a rectangular bar about an inch wide and half an inch high with
a channel milled the length of one side and a post attached at each end of
the channel with a spring attached to the post. There is a rod connecting
the top of the posts and a ball bearing about three quarters of an inch
diameter runs in the channel constrained by the posts and bar above.

Sometimes it is necessary to give the ball a little flick to overcome
inertia, if it has a fault it is too accurate.

I keep meaning to machine an accurate long arrangement so I can place this
level on one end for getting vertical measures and maybe a hinged piece to
be set for specific angles but it seems my life is chuck full of unfulfilled
intentions.

I once borrowed a device which was a curved piece of heavy plastic I think
attached to a flat stick with a pivoted pendulum weighted at the short end.
The tip of the long end protruded a little distance past the ark forming a
pointer on a protractor and the arc had studs installed at intervals, don't
remember just what intervals. There was a sprung button you could press and
hold to keep the reading, that could have been better, maybe a ballpoint pen
type toggle would have been better because it was awkward to hold this while
removing the level and examining the reading.

The other problem was that who ever was selling it wanted something like two
hundred bucks for it.

Technically, both my ball bearing level and the one I just described should
be on longer trusses or come with longer ones for better use. A builder
really wants at least a four foot long level otherwise you are picking up
small imperfections in the material not overall level.

If I had a couple thousand spare dollars I think I might just make a couple
hundred improved versions of the pendulum style, surely even on that small
of scale of production one could get them out under 20 bucks!

 Ed,
that kind of technieque works fine for vertical. I've also seen
an idea where you create a rectangular frame with a hanging plumb
bob in its center so that when the plumb is vertical, you'll know
 the bottom piece is horizontal.

But if you're trying to level a fence rail or a shelf, you need
 at least three hands.

The Zercon level, although not very audible, is much less than
$100.00, it beeps only when level, so you never know which way to
adjust, but some find it better than nothing.

Which audible level are you proposing to pay $100.00 for? I agree
that's a lot, must be made by a blindness company.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] A Very Simple Verticle Level, Blind Technique

2006-10-22 Thread NLG
Exactly the perfect level in my mind...Simple in design, hno electronics (which
means batteries) and very accurate!.

One question/ suggestion on your description of the one you own? If the level
had more than one ball/ baring, I think it would be even more accurate. The
inurtia factor would be minimised.

Remember the hand held games that had little balls that you were suppose to get
into the little dimples as you tilted the game? Same principal.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] putting up shelves

2006-10-22 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Robert,
We have shelving from Cosco. They are like very heavy wire and each
shelf will hold 600 pounds. They are almost five feet long and
seventeen inches deep. There are six shelves. You can also make them
only three shelves high and almost ten feet long. They have really
heavy-duty rollers and they can be locked to stay in place. The
height of the shelves is adjustable. We are in earthquake territory
and those shelves didn't move a bit. I stack 35 pound boxes of
braille paper on them and I've seen no sign of warping. I believe we
paid about $60 for them six years ago, and since we're in Hawaii, you
can probably get them cheaper wherever you are.

If you don't mind getting the hands a little dirty and don't mind touching
the worms. a bucket of sort to put the worms in. Using the bare hands pick
up a clump of dirt and sift through the fingers and put the worms in the
bucket. If you have some old leaves put them in the bucket first and then
the worms. Then, when you have the entire cooler sifted of the worms you
can change the soil if that is your need.
Then, add in the leaves and the worms back into your little worm farm
cooler.
If you have cool temperature now you may find a lot of worms wrapped in a
ball. Don't bother to separate them! Unless the need to create another
container.
Another tid bit? They love used coffee grounds!

Tom,

Macklanburg Duncan, a high end tool manufacturer, makes the Smart Tool
line of digital devices. They have a module that can be put into their
levels that turn them into audible levels. The module and I think the
four foot level goes for about a hundred bucks. This isn't just a
blindness rip-off price. Everyone, sighted or not pays the same.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Harbor Freight, a good tradeoff

Well, I've been whining for a year or so about how much I need one of
 those
Tissot vibrating watches that cost $400 or so. And, my wife I believe
 was
going to buy me one for Xmas.

And, since I saved us so much money, I'm going to have another 30 amp
 line
put on the breaker box in the basement, which is something else I've
 wanted
 for a while.

BTW, I got really good service from the folks at Harbor Freight.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] putting up shelves

2006-10-22 Thread R S Enterprises
My experience has been the brackets cost less than the snap in brackets and
then you still have to buy the wall standreds. The wall pieces also hold
the shelves away from the wall unless you notch for them and the premade
shelves arn't always the right width for the snap in brackets. With the
wall angles you can also put a screw in from the bottom making the shelf
more secure. Of course once built there is no adjustment, but less cost.

 Max
I am very fermillier with that system and have useed them many times. I
 do
like the versitility. Do you think they would be less expensive than just
 using l brackets?
depending on how many shelves I will put up that can still runn into some
bucks. Looks like they are going to be my best bet but those rails have
 gotten kind of expensive.
 Thanks

[BlindHandyMan] worm eviction

2006-10-22 Thread Geno

[BlindHandyMan] O E max

2006-10-22 Thread rj
Deleted your message and don't know if you are asking about outlook Express
or Outlook. If it is O E, try this, Go to the desktop and highlight the
icon. Hit the content key and enter on properties and tab to the normal min,
and max combo box and pick Max and enter on OK. I think that is what I did a
while back.
