I do not appreciate having someone claiming friendliness attempting to gain

Did anyone else get that request?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Supporting the Work

2006-10-24 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Dale,

You need to put something heavy on the base to keep the stands in place (sand
bags, or something). As long as the board contacts the upper half of the
roller and the stand is secure enough to stay put, the board will go over the
top. I set the height by placing a long board on the tool table that I am
using and then just raise the roller up to barely touch the bottom of the
board. Granted, boards aren't all exactly flat, but this method works, if the
stand will stay put with enough weight on it.

I have some that I made with old car wheels as the bases (free from tire
dealers). I used 2 sizes of plumbing pipe for the vertical supports with one
sliding inside the other and a locking knob to hold the adjustment. There is a
pipe flange at the bottom to attach to the wheel. At the top, there is a piece
of angle iron with a flat tab on each ent and holes drilled through to hold
the roller. I found some 12 long used conveyor rollers to use on the top.
You can buy both rollers with brackets or ball bearings with brackets to use on
the top for rollers. You could use plastic plumbing pipe with regular end caps
and center drill the caps for an axle. You might want to slip a piece of
plastic (PVC) tubing over the plastic pipe, between the end caps, to make it
level all the way across.

I saw the program where Norm made his supports. What wasn't exactly clear to
me was how he used the threaded rod as the height adjustment. Do you know how
this worked?

Thanks-- Mickey

This won't help you too much but this week Canadian Tire has roller stands
on sale for under ten bucks.

I have a couple, I am of a couple of minds about them. These ones have a
pipe with horizontal pipe across the bottom and a similar parallel flat
steel bent up at the ends with a roller across. A second inverted 'T' hinged
from a cuff that fits around the main pipe and can be slid up and down and
tightened into place with a hand knob on a bolt.I paid nearly fifty bucks
for mine a couple of years ago.

The height is infinitely variable from something like 30 to 42 inches. I use
mine to catch stock coming off my table saw or jointer or drum sander and
could use it with the drill press too I suppose, just never have.

My main complaint is that if the board nudges the roller stand it often
prefers to fall over rather than raise the board over the top.

My hero Norm Abrams has made one, a sort of box within a box with a threaded
rod to be screwed up or down to set the height. He made a set of rollers on
the top using plastic plumbing pipe with wooden circles in the ends and rod
through. I am thinking that a very slight slope toward the approaching work
might catch the end and tilt on a pivot to level and it would be secure
  against falling over.

There is little worse than having to depend on something innately
  undependable.

I have been known to suspend the end of a long piece from a rope attached to
  the overhead joists.

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Supporting the Work

Yesterday, I got to spend a considerable amount of time in my basement
cutting and drilling in preparation for building a workbench. The floor
is about five inches higher at the base of three of the walls than it is
in the center where there is a drain. This can present some challenges,
but I like it just the same. But I digress.

My wife is a woman of many talents, some of which have to do with music.
She has a studio, and several adjustable music stands.

Yesterday, I borrowed one of these to use while I was sawing and
running my drill press. It worked amazingly well quite frankly, and it
was sturdier than I had thought. It was easily adjustable, and because of
the sloping floor, I could make minor changes by just moving it an inch
or two in one direction or another.

Any of you folks have different and maybe better ways of supporting work?

   Thanks for any other ideas.

[BlindHandyMan] Chainsaw carving project: the eagle.

2006-10-24 Thread Lewisjalexander
hello all. here's a good project I'm working on.

but first lets just take a moment to calm the nerves of the sceptical and
those who get nervous of heavy duty machinery lol

the chainsaw though incredibly powerful and considered dangerous is actually
a sleak and elegant machine. I use 3 different machines for my carving and
machining work. All of course are made by Stihl. following models: MS170, MS
250CQT and MS880 pro.

as the chainsaw is in some models a bulky machine it's important to get used
to the machine. just like a woman, handle with care and respect the tool at
all times.

if you're carving for the first time start off with a small saw rig like the
ms170 or husquvarna 135 models. using anything from 12 inch to 15 inch but a
12 inch is perfect for use.

enough of the discussion. lets get down to business.

First off you're gonna need a hefty log. say about 30 inches girth by about
45 inches height.. with a long bar chainsaw take off the top for a clean cut
just to level it and then go around the edges of the top and cut angled
chunks off. not too big now.. this is to work with the surface. now the bark is
 a
big consideration here to some level so from this point use a smaller saw to
plane off the bark nice and gently by running the bar about half an inch in
from the edge and run down it. let it just plane the surface gently. please
note the chainsaws are your only tools here.

next thing is this. from the base of the log go about a third up and with
the saw running about 3/4 power on the throttle run the bar to mark out your
drop line for the bar to stop at. you can cut in at least about 3 inches or so
all around the bark. this is a little bit delicate so turn the log side on
and from the top end run the saw over and rotate the log slowly. from there it
starts to get a bit easier. Using a mid range saw, my ms250CQT and a rough
chain, I'm gouging out the base with the saw rotated to the side. remembering
that of course that little girl is able to handle different positions not just
straight down. so now you're ready to rough out. from the slit point
you've made, position the saw to carge and rough out. this is a good bit but
your
positioning of the saw depends on what machine you use, its weight and its
power. a bit to deep on the angle can force the saw to run away at half
throttle

now you're roughing out the base where the feet will stand proud. rough out
at least 5 inches or so around the cercumferance of the log from the split
point. this will give you adiquate working conditions for the machine.

you can now rough up the log slowly but it helps to sometimes do a down cut.
. start moulding with the bar on your midsize macchine and away you go. keep
going to the foot line and rough out more around the surface and then at the
back assuming you've decided where your back will face of the eagle now take
out just abit more at the back so you square off .

now at the back where you're going to take out sit the log now so its in its
vertical position andtake your chainsaw and cut about a third from the back
of the log in and go down about cut down about a third down and from there
draw the saw out and come from the side and cut away that piece. that's now
removeable stock.

part two to show if interested

Dave, sorry to hear that, seeing as this is the week I had decided to
start carrying my shotgun and opening up on leaf blowers. *GRIN* I hate
those things. As a matter of fact, while walking into work this morning I
was cursing leaf blowers yet again. A nice crisp quiet morning shattered
with the shriek of a little gas engine, and having to walk through a cloud

I doubt I will make it as far as your neck of the woods, so you should be

Re: [BlindHandyMan] leaf blowers

2006-10-24 Thread Mickey Fixsen
David,

I own 2 leaf blower/vacs. The oldest is a Sears Craftsman gas powered unit.
It is about 12 years old. I find that it is quite heavy and the blower
works ok, but not great. I hate the vacuum arrangement on it and never use
it.

Last spring, I bought a Toro electric model blower vac. I really like this
unit!!! It was not expensive. I paid $45 on sale and the normal price here
is $49. It is light weight, has 2 speeds, is powerful, converts quickly and
easily from blower to vacuum and all parts can be stored inside the vacuum
bag. I can't tell you the model number right this minute, but i could later
this evening, if you want. I highly recommend this Toro unit.

Hope this helps.-- Mickey

Models I recommend include STIHL and husqvarna machines. if you're looking
for a blower only, the backpack systems are particularly wonderful. and easy
to deal with. controls are mounted on the right hand side to the tube. they
can be used as blowers and pesticide sprayers etc. perfect for work.
I use one
in the yard and workshop. its the stihl SH55. high powered, light weight,
easy start and more. well worth the money.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] leaf blowers

2006-10-24 Thread David Ferrin
I am figuring on an electric model for my needs. I really don't have any
trees at all but you wouldn't know that to look at my yard. I'm dealing
with mainly oak and or maple leafs around here, so nothing overly punishing
to a blower. For all that I will need it for that should be fine since I've
got electric cords that will reach every place I need. It's a pain to be
able to fill up 12 or more bags of leafs when you don't even own a tree.
Thanks for the reply, I think Toro is one of the models the hardware store
has on the shelf. It's an ace hardware that just opened real near to my
house. Actually I think they have at least 4 or 5 brands to pick from.

How would we find out or do you know what year, I think Chrysler had a
three or four leg jack stand which had a crank on it to slowly raise
the car for changing a tire. one of these jack stands would take up
little space in a shop or basement and could come in handy for
different projects, including building a work bench. this is how I
collected so much stuff because of brain storming like this. but after
long thought. If I could find one of those in a junk yard it still would
 be a good investment.Lee

Hi David,

Don't some shop vacs come with a blower feature?

I have one from a company called Rigid, and it's got an intake and output
port and it blows as well as it sucks,

Since you're going with an electric blower, maybe you should consider that
when you blow the stuff into a corner, or where ever you need to blow it,
you might have to pick it up after it's been blown.

Why bend over with rakes, shovels and stuff like that, hurting your back,
when you can just have the crap come to you, via the same hose you just blew
through.

Sorry if I sound like a used car sales man there.

Think I'd do well on late night infomercials?

Victor Gouveia
Who is serious about the shop vac question, even though the rest was kind of
flippant...LOL

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hi there. A new member and blind professional at your service :)

2006-10-24 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Hi Lewis and welcome.

I have done some electric welding with a stick welder with satisfactory
results. A while back, I asked the list if anyone knew how a blind guy could
MIG weld. The answers were not encouraging. There didn't seem to be anyone
who knew the techniques and steps for a blind guy to use to get the job done.

I would love for you to give us a lesson in both MIG and TIG welding as a blind
guy. They would be a GREAT resource for our Files page.

Personally, I am more interested in the MIG welding lesson. However, I would
also love to hear how a blind guy does TIG welding with it's foot control
peddle and basically using an electric torch and fill rod to do the job.

I anxiously await your lessons on these welding techniques for blind guys.

Thanks-- Mickey

If my cousin is willing to teach me, I will find out exactly what he has for

Is there any particular type of welding that a blind guy just simply can't

or is it all doable?

No, it was me.

I found a pop-up this morning asking permission to share my contact list

though that it is because I presently have very tight security set here.
Could be some other explanation. I certainly hope so.

 Hi Robert here
I must have missed some part of this thread about louis supposedly
 offending
 some one or being offended.
did I say some thing that started this?
Reason I ask is these posts were under the heading of welding which is
 what
 I was asking about.

I hope I did not start some thing.
I am quite pleased to welcom Louis to the list.

I have used these stands many times and usually satisfactorily, don't much
care to be hauling about weights to support the stands which are supposed
 to
 support the work though.

The crank mechanism used a length of ready rod that continuously
 threaded
rod. I don't remember for certain but I think the rod passed through a
bearing through a partition near the top of the stand restricted between
washers and pairs of locking nuts while the lower end climbed up or down
through a nut in the lower outer sleeve of the stand.

I only saw the programme once and thought it might be a useful approach
 and
maybe a way to hold a few more rollers for a longer travel.

Unless you have access to spare rollers they are outrageously expensive,
 the
use of ABS pipe though struck me as a good solution and as it happens I
 have
a hole saw which creates exactly the right size of cores with a hole
absolutely centered. My first application though will be a modification of
the idea, an outfeed table hinged to the rear of my table saw that I can
just swing up and hinge legs under to add about three more feet of low
friction and adequately wide outfeed which I can easily drop out of the
 way
when I don't want it. Don't know when I'll get to it though.

Apparently the washing machine repair people used to have people after
 them
for the old rollers salvaged from the old ringer washing machines for this
sort of purpose. A few years ago I went looking for commercial rollers,
 very
expensive. Would be nice to rip off a super market or two. I can't leave a
beer store without an envious look at their roller delivery system.

 Dale,

You need to put something heavy on the base to keep the stands in place
(sand bags, or something). As long as the board contacts the upper half
of the roller and the stand is secure enough to stay put, the board will
go over the top. I set the height by placing a long board on the tool
table that I am using and then just raise the roller up to barely touch
the bottom of the board. Granted, boards aren't all exactly flat, but
this method works, if the stand will stay put with enough weight on it.

I have some that I made with old car wheels as the bases (free from tire
dealers). I used 2 sizes of plumbing pipe for the vertical supports with
one sliding inside the other and a locking knob to hold the adjustment.
There is a pipe flange at the bottom to attach to the wheel. At the top,
there is a piece of angle iron with a flat tab on each ent and holes
drilled through to hold the roller. I found some 12 long used conveyor
rollers to use on the top. You can buy both rollers with brackets or
 ball
bearings with brackets to use on the top for rollers. You could use
plastic plumbing pipe with regular end caps and center drill the caps for
an axle. You might want to slip a piece of plastic (PVC) tubing over the
plastic pipe, between the end caps, to make it level all the way across.

I saw the program where Norm made his supports. What wasn't exactly
 clear
to me was how he used the threaded rod as the height adjustment. Do you
 know how this worked?

 Thanks-- Mickey

This won't help you too much but this week Canadian Tire has roller
 stands
on sale for under ten bucks.

I have a couple, I am of a couple of minds about them. These ones have a
pipe with horizontal pipe across the bottom and a similar parallel flat
steel bent up at the ends with a roller across. A second inverted 'T'
 hinged
from a cuff that fits around the main pipe and can be slid up and down
 and
tightened into place with a hand knob on a bolt.I paid nearly fifty
 bucks
for mine a couple of years ago.

The height is infinitely variable from something like 30 to 42 inches. I
 use
mine to catch stock coming off my table saw
