Re: [BlindHandyMan] electrical outlet question

2010-01-24 Thread Scott Howell
Yep, not a good idea in my opinion and I wouldn't even consider doing something
like that. Now I do remember people doing this back in the day and they would
plug in interesting stuff like humidifiers and the like. Just a bad idea and
even as a kid who knew little about electricity, I pondered the wisdom of such
things. I do recall Lee the old-style porcelain fixtures and those adapters
you could screw into the fixtures. I in fact remember my father having one in
the basement and I'm trying to recall what was plugged into it. I'm sure it was
something the fixture wasn't really rated for of course. The things people
will do .
Now here is one for you that falls along the same topical line. Using one of
those work lights (the type with the metal housing) attached directly to the
wire coming off the switch with a couple of wire nuts and allowed to hang
freely. Yep, that is what the previous owner did here. Now that was clever,
don't you agree? Oh and of course I took care of that as soon as I moved in. :)

Re: [BlindHandyMan] electrical outlet question

2010-01-24 Thread Tom Fowle
Jennifer,
I agree with Bob, but might add that if you can figure out which fuse or
circuit breaker the light socket is on and the ampere rating of that fuse or
breaker
it might be good to know. If there are a lot of lights also on that circuit
and waistfull sightlings turn them on a lot you might run up on an amperage
limit if the circuit is very old and maybe fused for only 10 amps or so.

But unless you run big braille embossers and lots of other gizmos I doubt
you'll have a problem.

On further reading, I agree with Dale and Dan, the light socket doesn't have
a safety ground, therefore any surge protectors etc. will be ineffective and
your computer will be even more vulnerable to damage from electrical surges,
close lightning, etc.

An electrician might charge you a bundle and therefore not be practical, but
you should reallyy have a fairly short run of cords to a properly installed
and grounded 3 prong socket

I think a 15 amp circuit is plenty as long as it isn't shared with other
heavy appliances, heaters etc.

Betsy,
The tape is marked withdots every 6 inches. To measure, you lign up the
tape dot that is short of your measure, ment with the end of the 6 inch ruler
and use the ruler to get the remaining measurement.

I find it a huge pain but it's cheaper than the overpriced talking rulers.

Have any of you purchase the metal tape measure from Maxi Aids? My

[BlindHandyMan] Gluing up

2010-01-24 Thread Keith Christian

I usually run a glue bottle along the edge of the 2 surfaces to be glued up
leaving a bead. Then I smear it with my finger to see that the area will
get covered. I do want to get good coverage, but I think I use more than I
need. Glue usually comes out of the joints and I end up cleaning it after
it dries. It could be said that I need to trust less glue!

I think my method is wasteful and creates more work than is necessary,
especially because of the clean up. Sometimes it feels necessary to put all
that glue on. But, I'd be interested in hearing other's methods of gluing,
if you don't mind sharing.

What I am thinking is running a small bead of glue on one side instead of

finger in the glue and wiping it on one surface and not both.

Thanks,

Re: [BlindHandyMan] electrical outlet question

2010-01-24 Thread Dale Leavens
In all likelihood one could easily tap a small branch off of the junction box
which the light fixture is part of and terminate that branch in an electrical
outlet. Depending on how the switching to the lamp has been implemented the
plug and the light would be fully independent. There are those who run power
from the switch to the light junction box but the more common way is to bring
power to the junction box fixture and split it there down to the switch then
back to the actual fixture. In this case the switch will be independent of the
power. Otherwise one would have to tap into the switch box.

I imagine it would cost at least fifty bucks an hour to have an electrician,
materials would be negligible and probably it wouldn't take more than an hour
depending on where one wants the plug and things like that.

Also, usually the glue containerwill tell you whether to place glue on one

Thirdly, It should tell you what to clean the wet glue off with.

Hope this helps.

i use cedar pickets when i build my blue bird houses. the picket is six feet
long, by six inches wide by one inch. the back is 12 inches tall, the side is

bottom is 8 inches.
i use a electric miter saw to cut my boards. i take the bottom board that is 8
inches long and the back board and nail them together. then i take the two 9
1/2 board that I made for the sides and put them together. i nail the back to
the side by nailing the back into the edge of side to the back. i then nail the
bottom to the bottom of the side boards. after i do this, i take a paddle bit
that is 1 1/2 and on the front board, i drill a hole that is close to the top.
it is about two inches from the top of the front board. before i nail the front
on, i cut the top edge on a 15º angle. then i nail this on the front of the
house. then i take the top board and put it onto of the house. i use a hinge on
the board so i can clean out the house after the little birds has left.

You only need glue on one surface, and even then only enough to squeeze out a
little.

Also, you only need enough pressure from a clamp to draw the 2 pieces together.
If you notice glue squeezing out while tightening the clamp, that's time to
stop.

Does anyone know what a bluebird nesting box looks like? There is an article

in today's paper where they will be monitoring bluebirds. They also stated
that they need donations of materials to make the boxes and volunteers to
construct them. In the next day or so I will probably call them to check out

a box to see how difficult they would be to build.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] electrical outlet question

2010-01-24 Thread Ron Yearns
If there is a wall switch for this closet light it might be possible. If the
dcable comes to the switch and then to the light. There is made a swith and
outlet combination that fits a single gang box. This would solve many of the
problems discussed. Hopefully this switch is inside the closet. Need to kill
the circuit, pull the switch out of the box, leaving wires attached, and see
what is really there.

First, I know nothing about electricity. With
that in mind, would it be possible to change the
light switch box to either a switch and an
acceptable socket, or eliminate the light switch
entirely and make it a socket? I don't know if a
light is needed in the space and perhaps a lamp
could be plugged in when needed.

An electrician might charge you a bundle and therefore not be practical, but
you should reallyy have a fairly short run of cords to a properly installed
  and grounded 3 prong socket

I think a 15 amp circuit is plenty as long as it isn't shared with other

information, but I didn't think that a light socket was designed to pull a
lot of current through it. A computer, speakers, and monitor shouldn't be
drawing 15 amps or anything, but still.

If the outlet in the living room is on the outside of the closet wall, it
would be easy enough to put an outlet in the closet, or turn the existing
one around.

I realize you may not want to do that work yourself, and electricians
don't come cheap. So, I'm not sure what the best solution is for you.

I have one of those roller dispensers and it is fine except something of a pain
to clean up.

You should apply wood glue to both surfaces but it is easy to get too much. I
too usually just spread yellow or white glue with a finger, occasionally I will
use a brush but not often.

Keith, I think that we all have that problem. A few years ago on the yankee

to put the right amount of glue on the joints. I never did purchase one but
  may look around for one.

What I am thinking is running a small bead of glue on one side instead of
both to start with. Or putting some glue on a paper plate, running my
finger in the glue and wiping it on one surface and not both.

  Thanks,

  Keith

Thanks everyone for your advice and warnings. I am not going to have a new
outlet installed because I am planning to remodel those stairs in he nest year

  Betsy,
It should be possible to change to a socket, or I think there may be a thing
that mounts like aswitch but has in it both a switch and a single 3 prong
  socket.
It would require there be a ground and a neutral available in the box, so
somebody with a little experience might be best to do this, but if the wires

For the bird house planters that I make, I drill four 1/4 inch drainage
holes. One in each inside corner. Since driving rain can get inside. For
 the
instructions for the bluebird houses I did not read about the drainage
holes. Are these not necessary for a bluebird house?

[BlindHandyMan] Gluing Up

2010-01-24 Thread Keith Christian
Well Tom,

I must admit, I never read the labels. It seems obvious that I need to
read about the glue before I can trust it! The glue is carpenters glue
and I made the big assumption...

I will check the label and look into it further. That makes sense.
Getting glue on my clothes is a problem so I'll try looking for a glue
bottle with a roller on the end. That sounds pretty cool too.

Thanks for the advice.

Keith

Keith, what kind of glue is it you're using?

Also, usually the glue container will tell you whether to place glue on
one

surface or both surfaces. It may also tell you if you should use it

sparingly or not.

Thirdly, It should tell you what to clean the wet glue off with.

Hope this helps.

I usually run a glue bottle along the edge of the 2 surfaces to be glued
up

leaving a bead. Then I smear it with my finger to see that the area will

get covered. I do want to get good coverage, but I think I use more than
I

need. Glue usually comes out of the joints and I end up cleaning it
after

it dries. It could be said that I need to trust less glue!

I think my method is wasteful and creates more work than is necessary,

especially because of the clean up. Sometimes it feels necessary to put
all

that glue on. But, I'd be interested in hearing other's methods of
gluing,

if you don't mind sharing.

What I am thinking is running a small bead of glue on one side instead
of

both to start with. Or putting some glue on a paper plate, running my

finger in the glue and wiping it on one surface and not both.

Thanks,

You only need glue on one surface, and even then only enough to squeeze
out a little.

Also, you only need enough pressure from a clamp to draw the 2 pieces
together. If you notice glue squeezing out while tightening the clamp,
that's time to stop.

[BlindHandyMan] picking up small objects

2010-01-24 Thread Art Rizzino
A while ago under the subject of drain cleaners people mentioned a flexible
device with small fingers for picking up small objects. I believe they are
called mechanical fingers not mechanic's fingers. Yes Mechanic's do use them
for grabbing fallen objects. The mechanical fingers, I believe comes from
having to move an actuator to open the fingers.

I think they're called mechanic's fingers because they can be used to
retrieve small items that fall into a radiator, or some other hard-to-reach
  place.

You can find bottles with a roller but it won't have glue in it. They are an
accessory. Not sure if you can find them at the big box stores but all of your
online woodworking stores carry them.

Hi,

I have a dark wood ceiling and it is rather dusty. I'd like to clean it
with something and wonder what would be a good choice? Would an orange oil
or paste wax be good?

Thanks,
