Funny this topic has come up. I saw a parabolic heater that I swear when you
stood right in front of it, you felt like you were standing outside on a very
Sunny day. These things are apparently incredibly efficient. I haven't
purchased one, but I have been rather tempted. Has anyone tried a parabolic
heater? The one I saw at Costco was made by Presto.

do any of you remember the name of the original small box type of

there are so many copies being sold. thanks. Lee

Hi Lee,

These days they usually use PEX. PEX is a form of cross linked polyethylene
pipe which can be laid down in long loops and being somewhat flexible can be
bent without requiring joints.

It is quite resilient.

[BlindHandyMan] Renovating my kitchen.

2010-02-26 Thread Blaine Deutscher
Hello there.

I'm considering, with permission from my landlord renovating the kitchen
counters and cubbords. One thing that I want to do is put an oak trim along
the counter edge instead of the same material that is on the counter
already. The cubbords are made of MDF and I like that for the shelves but
wish to put oak or an Oak finish so it looks like oak but really isn't to
the untrained eye. I would keep the shelves the same but put oak in the
doors and the frame would be oak. thought about having an oak trim and then
putting oak plywood in the middle and using a router to shape it so it had a
little decorative look to it. I also want to extend the counter to the
stove, it's in a corner is where I would want to put the extention so that I
could put coffee pots or microwave there and have more room on top of the
counter where the microwave is now for food prep. I know that I would have
to have a angled cut but trying to figure out how I would attach it to the
counter already there? There also is a plug beneath where the counter is
right now where I'm considering putting this extra counter. I would have to
have a space by the wall to drop the chords, or I could get the landlord,
who is an electrission to raise the plug so that I could put the extention
right up to the wall. I was looking at using two-by-twos to attach to the
counter already and against the back wall. I also would like to take the
bathroom counters and fix the drawer so that it roles out instead of pulling
out and also doing the same with the oak, I think I would completely redue
the cabinets keeping the counter top the same but putting an oak trim on the
edge and doing the cabbinets in oak. Let me know what you all think. Any
suggestions would be great.

Hi Bob, thanks for the info. I am considering this just to take the chill out
of the basement. Generally I dont' mind at all, but there are those days where
it does seem a bit cooler than is comfortable while working. Apparently some
use these instead of their central heat. Well okay, they turn the heat way down
and use these in whatever room they are in. I have read they use about as much
electricity as a nightlight and that does seem a little hard to believe. Of
course it could all be true.

Thanks Bill. I know when I passed this thing at Costco, I could not believe how
much heat was pouring out of it. Of course it is directional and so would take
some time to really warm an area up unless you are directly in front of it. An
interesting idea for sure. It was interesting that the backside of the dish was
not that hot and I could actually put my hand almost on the cage in the front
without it burning me. grin
Quite an interesting heater.

[BlindHandyMan] Changing rollers in glass sliding door

2010-02-26 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi All

Well I changed the rollers in the bottom of our glass sliding door yesterday
and it turned out to be more difficult than I thought.

The problem was not getting them out but because the hold down screw hole in
the new roller brackets had No screw thread in it this is what holds the
bracket to the frame of the door and without it there is nothing to hold it
in , apparently that is how they are now.

We fisted two large hardware stores and these rollers are all the same in
design.

So I drilled out this hole and used a larger screw and a square nut which
fitted inside the bracket to hold these rollers to the bottom of the door.

Then I lowered the rollers up inside the frame with the adjusting screw so
I could lit the door back into the track, then tilted the door slightly so I
could adjust the rollers down so the dor could slide.

By adjusting these rollers you can square up the door and after all this the
door now works like it should.

Can anyone explain how these brackets can be held under the door without
using these unscrewed holes, for when you buy these rollers there is no
additional screws or clips of any kind which come in the packet.

Ray

Hi Lenny,

While this may not be in your neck of the woods, there's a store up here
called Canadian Tire, which sells the snow blowers you're referring to.

I'm not telling you this so you can come up here and buy one from them, I'm
telling you this because their website is completely accessible, and, they
have a good comment and feedback section on each of their products that are
equal and unbiased.

It' a rating system, and people rate their products and comment on them.

One of the comments I saw in regards to electric snow blowers is that you
shouldn't get anything under 12 amps, otherwise you risk not having enough
power to clear what you want.

I can't readily remember where it is you live, but judging from the snow
fall you all have gotten down there in the last couple of months, a 6 amp
blower won't do you at all.

Either way, I would suggest you check out the site below, and check out the
comment section for the blowers you're looking for, in addition to the specs
for the products, and look for the one most similar to the one you're
looking to buy, and see what others say about it.

I mean, who would know more about clearing snow than Canadians, right?
Smile.

In any case, the website is below, and have fun looking.

Hope this helps.

well don't come to Saskatchewan then as we have a lot of wind. It hasn't
been too bad actually so I can deal with this. today the weather is warm so
the snow is melting which sucks because it makes a lot of ice. I
unfortunitly don't have an ice pick to pick the ice away.

Maybe I should, probably less snow up there. Now if I could find a wind
director. This morning there was several feet of snow on our sidewalk, None
on the car and a few houses up the street had no snow. The wind so kindly
re-located it.

Smile.

In any case, the website is below, and have fun looking.

http://www.canadiantire.ca

Hope this helps.

Victor

Bob,

Yes, not only was I surprised that job site injuries weren't reported as
part of this report, but since experienced users are at greater risk of
injury, I can only imagine the numbers are pretty scarry for job site
injuries.

It is so interesting to read the comments from all the wood workers. The
arguments are exactly the same against safety equipment that I've seen in
the skydiving and rock climbing communities.

The argument essentially goes, as long as you respect the tool, keep your
head about you, don't do anything that you know to be dangerous or stupid,
know everything that can go wrong and protect yourself against it, you
will never have an accident.

Personally, I don't believe that. Accidents can happen and I don't know
anyone who is 100% aware 100% of the time.

I also don't completely buy into the idea that making something safer
means people will be more reckless doing it. I don't know too many
people who get into a car with a seatbelt and airbag and then run red
lights. Nor do I believe that someone using a SawStop would casually run
their hand into the spinning blade.

It's interesting to see all the stories from the guys who did get bit by
their saw.
