RE: [BlindHandyMan] new tile floor- should I seal?

2010-03-10 Thread Tom Hodges
Definitely seal it. It won't wear off since it is absorbed into the grout.
All the reasons you stated are reasons you should seal it. It's inexpensive
and you or someone sighted should have no trouble applying it, by following
the directions on the bottle. You can buy it at Lowes or Home Depot.

Hope this helps. Tom

Hello everyone,

I am new to this list and I have a question for the group. Hubby and I are
blind and we are having our home remodeled with new tile floors put in our
kitchen, dining room, sunroom, and utility room. The grout color will be a
medium shade of bone with the grout lines 1/16 inch wide (the tiles
themselves are large-- sorry I can't remember their exact dimensions).
Anyway, I am getting conflicting advice as to whether or not to have the
grout sealed. Some say sealing it is a waste because the grout line is so
thin, the sealant will wear off, and you need to reseal every year. Others
say that sealing the grout will help prevent the grout from absorbing food
spills and stains (I have a guide dog with a very sensitive stomach), and
becoming discolored. What is your advice?

Much thanks,
Linda

2010-03-10 Thread Tom Hodges
You do not need to scrub and clean new grout before applying the sealant.
Also, you do not need to re apply ever. It is not going to disappear after
a while. They just want you to buy more, so, don't fall for that one.

Hi,

Well I just asked my wife who is sighted and worked with many a grout. My
wife said the following: If you seal the grout, you need to do it every
six months. Before doing it, you need to clean and scrub the grout line,
then seal. Being a non-high maintenance gal, I do not seal grout. Its not
worth the effort. So says my wife.

From Dave's point of view, concerning the dog, vaccuuming or sweeping the
floor every other day get and keeps the floor clean. Any less than this, and
its dirty, no matter what flooring.

plastic is because of the unions. Most people can do plastic. Most can not
do copper, thus giving union pipe fitters a job.

This is real evident in chicago with their electrical codes. All electrical

Please do not assume I am a union basher. I am not. I am simply pointing out

I can't speak to where anybody else lives, but water supply lines cannot be
PVC and meet code in most metropolitan locations. At least, none of the
metropolitan areas where I've lived allow PVC supply lines. The reason for
this is that in case of a fire, earthquake, tornado or some other disaster
that could rupture those lines the municipality doesn't want water supplies
compromised. Of course, an earthquake might very well rupture a main line,
but that's much easier to correct than a number of private homes leaking
kilo gallons of water during an emergency.

I have used DVD Audio Extractor for several years. It works great and is very
JAWS friendly. You can download a trial version which is as I recall fully
functional for 30 days after installing it. After that, you have to purchase a
license for, I think, $39.99 or, maybe, $49.99, I don't remember. I paid for
it after only about a week, I liked it so much. I have ripped the audio from
hundreds of DVDs so far with no problems.

By the way, you can also play DVDs with it. Those functions are also very JAWS

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Recall: Gerber Legendary Blades: Machetes Due to Laceration Hazard

2010-03-10 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Guys,

This isn't so far fetched.

One must consider what the machete is primarily used for, that being the
cutting and chopping up of vegetation and plant life that is undoubtedly
going to get moist and soaked with dew, rain and other sap and gunk that
would make your hands very slippery, and if a person who's been doing this
all day, or even for an hour or two was to encounter a large enough limb to
cut, the obvious way to cut that limb is with a sawing motion.

Now, if the blade is sharp enough, one should have no trouble slicing into
it, however, if the blade is just the slightest bit dull, or serrated, then
the blade could very well catch, and, with no guard where the blade meets
the hilt, a hand could very well slide forward, and if the edge of the blade
is flush with the handle and hilt, there would be nothing to stop the hand
from sliding forward, and, like Dale said, cut fingers, tendons, and other
sinewy flesh that would cause you to lose your fingers, and/or function in
your fingers/hands.

Victor
