Hi dale,

Sorry my friend, but if the laptop is fried, then I can take it to someone that
will buy it for parts and give me a good price for the overall thing.

The screen alone is worth about $300 and the hard drive, even though it is only
a 40 gig drive is worth, at least $60, all of which I can put together towards
the purchase of a new laptop.

Suffice it to say, had I not had this resource, I would gladly ship it to you
for experimentation.

Better luck next time.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-08 Thread A. Chew
some advice already posted makes sense... some does not...

if you can hear stuff going on... that suggest its not battery or power...
especially if the same thing happens when you are plugged into wall power.

I think you said you can hear stuff in the computer but the harddrive led does
not light.
that suggest to me that the harddrve is very sick.

but you can try.. pressing the 'f' key just after you power up... depending
on brand.. its f1 or f3 or f8... to get into the factory restore routine.

what normally happens at power up..
the CMOS looks for the boot record. which is normally on the harddrive.
but will check the floppy drive first if there is a diskette in it.

this boot record then loads the basic test functions. and beeps if it
founds something wrong. different length beeps and number of beeps tell what
component is sick.

if you do not get any beeps.. and the harddrive just does not make any
sound... I suspect its the harddrive that is sick
if it were components or drivers on the mother board, you would get some
beeps at power up test.

on the repair side... if you open the case you need to be very very careful
with ESD. just touching any components can cause un-recoverable damage. ESD
is electrostatic discharge you can burn chips, and boards and cards,
simply by touch them... (unless you are properly grounded).

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

  Hi All,

I recently came across a problem that is forcing me to go to a professional
for help...Yeah, I know, I've used the dirty word...

  Anyway, my problem is this...

I think my motherboard is fried on my laptop, but I have no way of making
sure that it is or not. I mean, let's face it, there must be a hundred reasons
why a computer won't boot up. Suffice it to say, that the computer does get
power to it, I can here things running in the background, but the hard drive
stays put, and I don't here any sounds from it. My brother says he does not see
any lights emitting from the hard drive light, and at some point, the laptop
just sits there looking at me, like it's waiting for me to make the next move.

My brother thinks it might be the motherboard, or a controller on the
motherboard.

My question is, whether a person can check if the motherboard is working
properly or not, without actually having to rip it out of it's current location
and putting it into another computer, or laptop, as the case may be.

Can one check this sort of thing with a continuity tester to make sure all of
the connections are alright, or if it's fried, to check if there's a break in
the circuitry. This does not have to be done through a blind person, at this
point, I would accept help from a sighted stand point, if anything, just to
save me the expense of paying someone 50 to 60 bucks an hour to look at an
overgrown paper weight.

Anyway, your help would be much appreciated.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-08 Thread Max Robinson
All other things being equal I would think it would be the same but measured
perpendicular to the ground rather than the true vertical. Of course, all
other things are seldom equal. Probably the main issue is snow cover. A
thick blanket of snow acts as an insulator and the frost line underneath it
will actually be shallower than it would be in a place such as the top of a
hill that may be swept clean of snow by the wind.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-08 Thread Dale Leavens
Probably the frost would be deeper on the lower ground since cold air is
heavier and tends to settle in the lower areas. Further, the lower ground is
likely to be damper and this would conduct the temperature more readily.

There are other factors though, things like vegetation, nature of the soil,
it's density and so on, the amount of any snow cover, the direction of the
hillside and even direction of prevailing winds and weather.

My answer therefore is a very definite maybe.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Ray,

Thanks for the research, it's much appreciated.

I have tried the traditional troubleshooting ideas, starting with the power
first, followed by the A B C's of medicine. They are, airway, breathing and
circulation. This is what medical professionals are taught to look for in an
emergency, so I looked to see if any of the vents were blocked or the fans were
obstructed, this was, of course, after I established that there was powered
going to the unit.

After that, I looked to see if there was circulation in the unit, in other
words, whether the power was flowing to the different parts of the laptop, but
I come to the exact same problem. How to determine if the power is flowing
through all the circuitry in the motherboard.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, I'm just too depressed over the life of my
laptop. It was very dear to me.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Max,

As I wrote to Ray, it's not a matter of whether the computer boots or not, I'm
simply not getting power to different components of the computer.

The screen is blank, the hard drive isn't spinning and the hard drive light
isn't lighting up.

I can only assume that there is a power flow interruption to these parts.
Aside from that, I can only assume that these parts were fried in some way,
shape or form.

As I said, the only way to determine if the power is flowing is to check the
circuitry on the motherboard itself.

That's why I thought of the continuity tester and whether it is able to tell if
there is a break in the circuitry.

victor,
If nothing comes up on the screen and nothing happens otherwise, only other
thing to try is a boot floppy or CDrom depending on what you have
If that doesn't work,you're fubar.
A continuity tester will be of no use and probably harm on any of those
connectors, even assuming you have the faintest idea what they do.

even a shop will usually just assume mother board and replace it, they don't
test or fix board level parts any more.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-07 Thread Tom Fowle
victor,
It does strike me that a battery with a shorted cell might give similar
results.

I don't know if those things are supposed to run with the battery removed,
if you know for sure, you could try that, but there are
many reasons why that might not work even if the battery is the
problem.

Of course you don't know, or do you, what the batteries terminal voltage
is, so measuring it might not help.

It might say on the battery or in the book what it should be
If it measures at or above what it is specified at, then the battery
is probably not the issue.
but if it, for example, is supposed to be 9.4 volts,
and the battery measures well under 9, then you may have a single cell
in the pack that's shorted.
In which case replacing the pack is the best answer.

If you dare to try it with battery pack removed and it boots, then also the
pack is the answer.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

2006-09-06 Thread Max Robinson
Hi Victor. Can you try to boot the computer from another drive such as a CD
or floppy disk? Many computers come with a boot CD for that purpose. The
first time you start a new computer, if it has a 3 and 1/2 floppy, it will
ask you to create a recovery boot disk. How many of you have done that?

Regards.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Question for the Engineers

 Hi All,

I recently came across a problem that is forcing me to go to a
professional for help...Yeah, I know, I've used the dirty word...

 Anyway, my problem is this...

I think my motherboard is fried on my laptop, but I have no way of making
sure that it is or not. I mean, let's face it, there must be a hundred
reasons why a computer won't boot up. Suffice it to say, that the
computer does get power to it, I can here things running in the
background, but the hard drive stays put, and I don't here any sounds from
it. My brother says he does not see any lights emitting from the hard
drive light, and at some point, the laptop just sits there looking at me,
like it's waiting for me to make the next move.

My brother thinks it might be the motherboard, or a controller on the
 motherboard.

My question is, whether a person can check if the motherboard is working
properly or not, without actually having to rip it out of it's current
location and putting it into another computer, or laptop, as the case may
 be.

Can one check this sort of thing with a continuity tester to make sure all
of the connections are alright, or if it's fried, to check if there's a
break in the circuitry. This does not have to be done through a blind
person, at this point, I would accept help from a sighted stand point, if
anything, just to save me the expense of paying someone 50 to 60 bucks an
hour to look at an overgrown paper weight.

Anyway, your help would be much appreciated.
