[BlueOnyx:07260] Passwordless login on BX 5.6

2011-05-10 Thread Colin Jack
This may be a dumb question (prepare face for egg) but I have just installed a
new BX 5.6 box for Aventurin{e} backup but when I go to set up the key for
passwordless access I cannot find the ~/root/.ssh folder:

[root@datastore1 ~]# ls -al
total 100
drwxr-x--- 4 root root 4096 May 9 10:50 .
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 4096 May 9 2011 ..

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 191 Jan 6 2007 .bash_profile
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 82 May 9 10:45 .bashrc
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 100 Jan 6 2007 .cshrc
drwx-- 2 root root 4096 May 5 22:51 .gnupg
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 410 May 9 10:50 id_rsa.pub drwxr
-xr-x 2 root root 4096 May 5 22:59 network_scripts
-rwxr-x--- 1 root root 3242 Dec 22 2008 network_settings.sh
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1515 Feb 3 2006 PAM_AUTH_EXTERNAL.READ-ME
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5144 May 6 09:03 README.1ST
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 129 Jan 6 2007 .tcshrc

Any idea where it has moved to or should I just create it? :)

I suspect that I need to include their servers in the "broken mta" list in

[BlueOnyx:07573] Monitoring mail

2011-07-01 Thread Colin Jack
We have a client running a BX box for their mail and users using IMAP with
Outlook and OWM.
As part of their compliance requirements they need to have ALL mail from user
mailboxes (received and sent mail) copied to a management mailbox.

Example:

3 users in a department (John, Sue and Bob) dealing with customers.
All mail received and sent by John and Sue to also be copied to Bob.

The inbound mail is simple (.forward) but not sure how to deal with sent mail.

Anybody able to help?

Ran swatch - no errors

No it hasn't fixed it - that is what is strange.

All seems okay but every 15 minutes I get an error message saying "Could not

Everything on the server seems fine. cced.socket is in there and cced is
running okay.

I've had this issue some while ago.. it fixed itself.
Do I understand correct that you fixed it already by restarting CCED? Don't
know the cause of it, I thought it was just CCED hanging and swatch is just
telling you about it..

[BlueOnyx:08248] Wordpress reading PHP version incorrectly

2011-08-25 Thread Colin Jack
I have someone trying to load Wordpress on one of our BX servers and it keeps
failing with:

'Your server is running PHP version 5.1.6 but WordPress 3.2.1 requires at least
5.2.4.'

Already tried that. This is just something with the WP detection mechanism for
checking the environment. It is running phpinfo and returning the CentOS PHP
version which is 5.1.6. and then refusing to install. Moodle must use something
different, because that detects the Solarspeed version correctly.

I am using the compass network php upgrade package and it is working.. not
sure what is different between them. I had an APC.INI issue but that was easy
to fix.
the APC error caused some wordpress sites to display a "unable to allocate

Best bet is to buy and install a pkg from Solarspeed or one of the others like
Compass Networks. The BlueOnyx GUI needs the current version - the update
package makes a different version available to websites. This is what we have

[BlueOnyx:08573] Moving Datacentre

2011-09-23 Thread Colin Jack
I have emailed Michael directly about this but thought it may be worth posting
here in case others are faced with the same dilemma in the future and need a
reference.

We are considering moving to another datacentre - about 300 miles from the
current one. We have a full rack in the current DC with 3 x Aventurin{e}
clusters and a number of standalone servers. The nightmare is going to be
updating the DNS - we use a number of BO VPSs to provide primary and secondary.

Is there a relatively easy way to do this or am I looking at a lot of painful
work? I imagine others have done this before ;)

All my servers are NATed behind my firewall as you know, so it would just
be the global routable addresses that needed updating on our DNS servers.
I need to look at all the repercussions, but the current DC makes me
nervous (they rebooted someone else's server the other day when I asked
them to reboot for me!) Š

Ideally I suppose I could set up some temporary Aventurin{e} hosts at the
new site and just migrate each VPS as I update the DNS?

If I do decide to move, I will probably ask for your assistance to avoid
problems! ;)

[BlueOnyx:08586] Backup

2011-09-25 Thread Colin Jack
A quick question to find out what everyone else out there uses for
Aventurin{e} VPS backup.

To date we have just used spare space on our standalone BX servers - in a
round robin sort of way but I want to put a dedicated device in (we have a
large Buffalo NAS for FTP based backup but it doesn't support rsync).
Shall I just build a big CentOS machine or go with say OpenNAS or TrueNAS
on it?

Just wanting opinions really.

The paid for version of XenServer certainly looks pretty good - with full HA

Also taking a look at Oracle VM

[BlueOnyx:08722] Rewrite oddity

2011-10-04 Thread Colin Jack
I would be interested to hear comments on the following. We have a user who was
having problems getting his website working. He sent me the following
explanation as to what was happening and I wondered whether anybody could shed
some light as to why? On a BX 5106 box.

Quote:

"Ok, All pages on the site are generated through a script called page.php, this
script needs a query string parameter (called pid) to work out which page on
the website to build and show to the user. All the navigation code in the CMS
knows to call each page using the scheme:/page/pageid/some_descriptive_text,
this both makes the URLs look a little more friendly and helps with SEO. There
is then the .htaccess file with some rewrite rules which take requests for
/page/pageid/some_descriptive_text and convert them into /page.php?pid=pageid,
which is all fairly standard stuff.

The problem we're having is that before any of the rewrite rules get called and
this conversion happens, something (I think possibly at Apache or php.ini
level) is catching the /page/ part of the requested URL and converting it
straight to /page.php meaning that the rewrite rules are never fired and the
capture of the pageid query string parameter within the URL doesn't happen,
thus CMS doesn't know what page to retrieve from the database and the site
breaks.

The reason I think this is server level is because it seems to do it with other
pages as well so if we set up a page called /test.php and then call /test/ in
the browser, we still get the contents of /test.php even though that's not what
we asked for."

He has managed a work around:

" Interestingly, I've just noticed that calling the REQUEST_URI server variable
from within PHP returns the originally requested URL ... I have been able to
extract the page id from the REQUEST_URI variable if it's not available in the
query string, and I have added that code into the main code tree ..."

But I would be interested as to why this is happening in case it rears its head
again!

I am now seeing this on one of my servers - users using Filezilla cannot

Command:PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (87,128,xxx,xxx,225,142).
Command:MLSD
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

This is since a yum update but I don't know if is related. Running 220 ProFTPD
1.3.3e Server (ProFTPD server) which is the same as on other BX servers that
are fine.

There is quite a lot of stuff on the internet about this problem - supposed to
be fixed in 1.3.4 - but why only one of my servers?

Anybody know a quick and dirty work around? I have a lot of disgruntled users!

This is for users using POP3 and popping the email to their computers. Z-push

[BlueOnyx:10402] incorrect HELO

2012-04-30 Thread Colin Jack
We recently updated one of our servers (VPS on Aventurin{e}) using yum and now
have been listed on CBL because "This IP address is HELO'ing as
"localhost.localdomain" which violates the relevant standards (specifically:
RFC5321)"

Looking in my hosts file I have

# /etc/hosts
# Auto-generated file. Keep your customizations at the bottom of this file.
127.0.0.1localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.2.6 server1.localdomain server1-venet0:0.localdomain
server1-venet0:0
#END of auto-generated code. Customize beneath this line.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost server1.fast-mail.net
# Auto-generated hostname. Please do not remove this comment.
192.168.2.6 server1. server1-venet0:0.localdomain
server1.localdomain server1-venet0:0. server1 server1-venet0:0
### Begin - Nuonce hosts Fix
127.0.0.1 server1.
192.168.2.6 server1.
### End - Nuonce hosts Fix
[root@server1 etc]#

I amended the details as follows, but obviously these are auto-generated and it
will 'break' again. Where else can I fix this permanently?

# /etc/hosts
# Auto-generated file. Keep your customizations at the bottom of this file.
127.0.0.1server1 server1.
192.168.2.6 server1. server1-venet0:0.localdomain
server1-venet0:0
#END of auto-generated code. Customize beneath this line.

Thanks

Now that header is interesting - because my email came from an Exchange 2010
server - the server in question above is in a datacentre and provides SMTP
relay services for our clients. It has nothing to do with our internal email ;)

On the server in question, 'hostname' resolves correctly. The problem is that
the sendmail HELO doesn't.

It just seems to be the hosts settings. Looked at some of my other servers and
the hosts file is as per my amended version. I would just like to know how it
got changed and is it going to happen again.

I think we must have the older version (no Web Applications" under Server
Management).

Server has a MySQL password and says "MySQL connection possible with this
settings" but still getting SERVICE CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE!

Any further ideas - rebuild or install web app version?

I don't like spell checkers but we have a number of users who complain that the

I checked that aspell was installed, but it wasn't.

[BlueOnyx:10800] Re: migrating to another mail server.

2012-06-14 Thread Colin Jack
Hi Roy,

We have done this fairly regulary when moving Exchange Servers for clients to
new offices.
We have a little BX unit specifically for it (installed on a little Shuttle so
it can be carted about easily).

On the BX box setup DNS to point to localhost only
Put an MX record for all the domains to be relayed with the new mx record
(pointing to new site)
Add domains into mail domains allowed to relay.

Point old mx to BX box and it will queue up all the mail until the new box
comes on line on the new mx. It will then forward all the mail to the new
server.

We are in the process of doing a slow migration to another platform and plan
on using our BO box as a relay.

Is there an easy way to forward the emails to another server that would
normally be dropped for "no such user"? We are changing the format of our email
addresses as we migrate, so it seems like the easiest way to go.
Here is the plan in my head so far... We setup a new mailbox on the other
server as bob.smith@ (with an alias of bsmith) when his old address was
bsmith@. We would .forward his bsmith mailbox to the bob.smith address. When a
message is received at the old server for bob.smith (or any other nonexistent
mailbox) it would be forwarded to the new server (and that server would
determine whether it should be delivered or returned as NSU). If the message
was for bsmith, the .forward would take over and the previous step would
happen. Then eventually once all of the mailboxes were migrated, we would
change the MX record to the new server and shut down the old.

Does this seem doable?

I think my first question would be:

If they're not tech savy enough to be able to navigate to the proper directory
- what are you giving them FTP access for?? FTP is powerful enough that they
could do some serious damage to a website - deleting, renaming, or overwriting
the wrong files.

If they can't figure out what directory they are in - do you trust them with
the site's files? Or do you trust them with the other user's files (like their
mbox file)??

[BlueOnyx:10967] Nagios -aaahhhh!

2012-07-19 Thread Colin Jack
My BX Nagios server self destructed and I have rebuilt it using 5107R ...

I then installed Nagios again in default setup and could not get around all the
permissions problems - it is well locked down ;)

I then created a vsite called nagios.domain.name and moved the web interface
(the /share directory), the cgi-bin directory (/sbin) and the plugins directory
(/libexec) into the web folder.
Changed all ownership to nagios:nagios and put an .htaccess file in the cgi and
plugin folders:

Options +ExecCGI
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
IndexIgnore *

The web interface and cgi scripts work fine but I cannot get the plugins to
run. Keep getting
" Warning: Return code of 126 for check of service 'Current Load' on host
'localhost' was out of bounds. Make sure the plugin you're trying to run is
executable."

The path has been changed in resources.cfg and permissions set as 755 ...

Anybody any idea how to either

1. Get the plugins to run or
2. Get it run from the native install (I tried disabling CGIWrap in httpd.conf
but that didn't help.

I appreciate I should run on a bare CentOS box but I have other stuff on here
that uses BX.

Can anybody point me in the correct direction?

Thanks

[BlueOnyx:11145] Moving Mail

2012-08-10 Thread Colin Jack
We have a number of clients who are using OpenWebMail and have created dozens
of folders and now want to move to Roundcube.
Is there any way of moving their mail with all folders?

Thanks

[BlueOnyx:11825] Forwarding keeps disappearing

2012-12-18 Thread Colin Jack
We are seeing a very strange phenomenon on one of our BX 5106R machines.
If users set up forwarding - it creates a .forward and all works okay.
In due course if they go anywhere near the GUI - for example to add a vacation
message - the .forward file disappears.
Today one disappeared and the user hadn't been near it - not even onto OWM
which was a possible suspect.

This is causing all sorts of issues and I need to nail it down Is anybody able
to give me a pointer?

Thanks

[BlueOnyx:12058] Solarspeed Roundcube after OWM

2013-01-21 Thread Colin Jack
I have just installed Roundcube on a client's server (using the new Solarspeed
Shop which Greg and Michael have setup). Nice and easy.

I have one problem though - one user has a squillion folders created under OWM
which she was using and although the folders are subscribed and are viewable in
Roundcube, they appear to be empty.
Open with OWM and all is as it should be - folders are full of messages.

I thought IMAP folders were IMAP folders but it seems not.

Mail folder looks fine:

-rw--- 1 suewilson site8 1437428 Jan 21 14:37 Andy & Olly 19th Jan 2013

Anybody able to help - what am I missing?

Also maybe grouping and renaming the controls/boxes so that it is more obvious?

I tried the suggested iptables addition to limit the number of queries but it
didn't work! Syntax error.
Something else that may be worth putting into the default template or even into

Great work and wonderfully explained.

Personally I would like option (a) and bad luck to those who want an
insecure DNS server.

[BlueOnyx:12773] DNS hack

2013-04-05 Thread Colin Jack
I would just like to add my thanks to Michael for the quick and effective
modified bind for BX that he hacked together and released so quickly.
It was a real life saver and much appreciated.

[BlueOnyx:13633] Where is it hidden?

2013-09-04 Thread Colin Jack
I suspect this is a bit of a lame question, so sorry in advance, but I have a
user on our server who is using up a lot of space (and maxing out his quota)
and I cannot find out where the data is!

The user is the admin for their web site and therefore owns most of the files
and folders on the site.
He is using PHP extensively.
His personal folder (~siteadmin) is almost empty - less than 1Mb but he is
using 3 Gb on disk ...

I suspect there are some temp files being cached somewhere that aren't being
deleted but would appreciate some help in where to look.

Many thanks

Colin

Gotcha!!

Thanks - that was what it was. This was a migrated site a while ago.

[BlueOnyx:13955] New GUI

2013-10-31 Thread Colin Jack
Just had a chance to look at Michael¹s work on the new GUI and it is
mightily impressive.
Huge amount of work already and lots more to do.

Congratulations Michael and thank you for all your efforts. I know from
chatting on the phone just how long and hard it has been.
We do appreciate it!

[BlueOnyx:14157] Solarspeed AV-SPAM V5

2013-12-24 Thread Colin Jack
I am using Michael¹s excellent AV/Spam filter on all my servers.
Michael is very good at providing direct support for his products but I
decided to post this question on the list as his and other answers may be
useful to others on the list using this software.

We are finding that viral attachments (e.g crypto) are not being filtered
out of email even though everything (clamav sigs etc.) is up to date.
Is there any way around this - I would expect these to be fitered out /
email dumped.

What is the best way forward - we are seeing a shedload of these emails
(e.g. From employ...@alerts.hmrc.gov.uk) and had a few clients get zapped.
