...I just felt the joke was racist and said so.

But I wouldn't put
it in the same category as a Nazi joke, because:
snip

Also, there _used_ to be an unofficial American
 policy of wiping out
Native Americans (I'm simplifying, obviously). The
 punchline of this
joke basically points to Muslims and says 'You're
 Next.' IMO, that puts
it in the same category as the Nazi joke.

This ties into my reason #3.

  (2) I took it as poking (sardonic/political) fun
 at a certain 'cowboy'... sniplet

So the obvious follow-up question is do you
 believe that jokes
calling someone a moron has an equal value to those
 that suggest they
and their people are mass murderers?

Umm, no - it was such a ridiculous position that I
didn't think anyone could take it seriously. While
it's no secret that I don't like Bush's policies WRT
just about everything, I don't think he wants to, or
would deliberately engage in, genocide. Despite his
'arrogant cowboy stance,' I think he truly wants to be
liked.

  (3) underneath the humor I read a pointed reminder
of what categorizing people can lead to (frex, the
consequences of past policies that 'dealt with
 heathen savages').

It didn't exactly sound like a warning encouraging
 American self-examination to me.

First off, I don't speak for the list. I just speak for me. But if I
find something offensive I'll usually speak up. Judging by the
responses from Kevin and Rob I'm obviously in the offended minority.
Somehow I doubt either of them had family members thrown in the

history tends to make one less than amused by jokes about it.

I have (had Jewish family who stayed behind in Europe in the 30's

Not as rare as you'd like to think. :(

According to _The Gift of Fear_ by Gavin de Becker, 75 women are raped every
hour, on average, and the number of women killed by boyfriends husbands
every month exceeds the death toll of a jumbo jet going down and killing
everyone on board.

Later on in the book, he recounts a story where someone made a joke that
turned out to be all too unfunny, but a warning. At the California Forestry
Association, one day the receptionist was out and there was a package
addressed to the former president of the association. After discussion
between several people, including the current president, they decided to
open it. One man, Bob Taylor, joked, I'm going back to my office before
the bomb goes off. And when the others opened it, sure enough, it *was* a
bomb, and of everyone in on the discussion of the package, only Taylor
managed not to be a victim of the Unabomber.

So dark humor can be the expression of a warning that might not be taken
seriously.

Anyway, I'm probably rambling here

The murder numbers are high. Assuming a jumbo jet carries 350 people,
that's 4200/year. At the US department of justice site the number is given
at about 1250 for 2000. The rape numbers assume that only about 1 in 8
rapes are reported.

I'm sorry that you were so offended. It made me laugh

would not have posted it if I thought that gallows

it in the same category as a Nazi joke, because:

(1) there is not (nor will there be) a Texan or
American stated goal or program of wiping out Muslims;

(2) I took it as poking (sardonic/political) fun at a

been posted;

(3) underneath the humor I read a pointed reminder of
what categorizing people can lead to (frex, the
consequences of past policies that 'dealt with heathen

  GSV Ouch!

No it wasn't. It is a very very old joke.
I must have been in 7th grade when I first heard it.

Well I'm sorry that I don't find genocide jokes funny. Just because
it's an old joke doesn't mean it's not offensive.

I'm genuinely curious: would you have posted this if it had a German

How many people can you fit in a Volkswagen?

I've heard that one before and declined commenting on it when Kevin Tarr
posted it because it's also offensive. I'm sure that the concept of
millions of human beings turned into a fine powder by the Germans
because of their religious views is funny to some people, but not to me.

First off, I don't speak for the list. I just speak for me. But if I
find something offensive I'll usually speak up. Judging by the
responses from Kevin and Rob I'm obviously in the offended minority.
Somehow I doubt either of them had family members thrown in the
concentration camp ovens and incinerated/cremated while still alive and
conscious. In my experience, that sort of thing in a family history
tends to make one less than amused by jokes about it.

Your apology is accepted. And, for what it's worth, from what I've
learned about you over the past few months I truly doubt you purposely
intended offense to anyone. I really don't want to give you a hard time
on this. I just felt the joke was racist and said so.

   But I wouldn't put
it in the same category as a Nazi joke, because:

 (1) there is not (nor will there be) a Texan or
 American stated goal or program of wiping out Muslims;

IMO, that doesn't make the joke acceptable. I do understand where
you're coming from, but I still disagree. There isn't a stated goal
of male Americans raping and murdering women either but you won't see me
joking about that (hopefully extremely) rare occurrence for any reason.

Also, there _used_ to be an unofficial American policy of wiping out
Native Americans (I'm simplifying, obviously). The punchline of this
joke basically points to Muslims and says 'You're Next.' IMO, that puts
it in the same category as the Nazi joke.

 (2) I took it as poking (sardonic/political) fun at a
certain 'cowboy,' and jokes about many politicos have
 been posted;

So the obvious follow-up question is do you believe that jokes
calling someone a moron has an equal value to those that suggest they
and their people are mass murderers?

 (3) underneath the humor I read a pointed reminder of
what categorizing people can lead to (frex, the
consequences of past policies that 'dealt with heathen
 savages').

It didn't exactly sound like a warning encouraging American
self-examination to me.

Hmm, I can sympathize with your reaction, but the above is how I
interpreted the joke.

While we're on the subject, I asked the other day why it is that the use
of Nazi symbols is inherently anti-Semitic. I don't mean to be pushy,
but feel it's important that I understand why you feel that way.

(4) Mel Brooks would laugh at it.

In To Be Or Not To Be, he did play a 'wipe out the Jews'
game and out finessed the Nazis.

It's all how you look at it, and some people shouldn't look when warned.
