I don't know, I only use brltty in text mode, no GUI.
The issue might be in the GUI code, I don't have any issues in the tex
mode.

Re: [BRLTTY] Somwthing is missing

2023-08-27 Thread Adrian van Bloois
Hi,
I am absolutely sure it has nothing to do with the release of brltty.
I installed brltty 6.5 from the source-tree and had no problem whatsoever
with my new focus80 I obtained in March.
I upgraded brltty to 6.6 wen that was available and again flawless.y.
I run all that on CentOS 7.9, maybe a bit old and conservative but very
very stable.
So, it might have something to do with teh releases of Debian or Ubuntu
Would be my first reaction.

Re: [BRLTTY] Focus Keyboard not working

2023-07-15 Thread Adrian van Bloois
Hi Paul,
I just checked, I have ALL lines in /etc/brltty.conf commented out.
I have the Alva and the FS drivers compiled in and this configuration
brltty is self determining which driver to load.
So my suggestion: since your version has probably all drivers compiled in
let brltty self determine what to do.
So comment out all lines in /etc/brltty.conf and I mean ALL!!!
It's worth a try it works here.

I know, when mine was deliverd earlier this year it was a DOA.
Ik had to wait 3 weeks before an engeneer came a logn to fix it. It was
sent by postal delivery and they are sometimes a bit rude with packages
so some connection was broken. It was fixed very quickly and works fine
ever since.
So my guess is that you have a hardware problem and you should call in an

Re: [BRLTTY] Focus Keyboard not working

2023-07-11 Thread Adrian van Bloois
Hi Paul,
You can get the sources of brltty on the website, brltty.app
It is a tarball the name of the file ends in tar.gz, hope you are
familiar with that.
In it you can find the directory Tables/Input, what you can try is copy
the contents of that directory into /etc/brltty/Input on your problem
machine. Then restart brltty and see what happens.

Re: [BRLTTY] Focus Keyboard not working

I installed brltty 6.5 direct from the tarball Dave is providing 2
months ago with the same display and it works fine.
Maybe you can steal the files in Tables/Input from that tarball and try
again.

I have been using an BC680 from Alva for over eight years. Then I needed
some maintenance on some of the braille cells but they don't do
maintenance on such old stuff.
The insurance replaced it with a Focus80 by Freedomscientific and so far
I'm very pleased with it.
The Alva was very expensive, 1 euro, the focus80 is much cheaper,
4000 euro. So I do understand the insurance when they decided to give me
a cheaper display. I mean even if it fails sooner you can have 2.5 for
the same price.
But I don't think that will be necessary.

Within the source tree you can find:
Tables/Input/TWO-LETTER
The TWO-LETTER is a directory specific to your brand, al=alva e.g. and FS
=FreedomScientific e.g. in my cases.
You'll find *.ktb and *.kti files in there which discribe you display.
The easiest way to handle this is make an my.kti and include that to the
main configfile usually common.ktb.
Recompile and there you are.

Hi Dave,
Now that was easy, there already is an entry for CSRVIS, space+c
probably stands for clear or cursor.
So job done!!! :-)
It was good to look at that mechanism though, you never know when you

Thanks and have a good weekenda,

Great, this works. Is there a way co configure things like this?
E.G.: bind space+v CSRVIS or
bind space+m MENU

There would be an endless, well 26, row of options to do things like
that.

I tried to find ways to do the same as on my bc680, on the 680 I
configured:

bind SmartpadF1 CSRVIS
bind SmartpadF3 CSRTRK+on
bind SmartpadF4 CSRTRK+off

I found something for the CSRTRK but it didn't work as expected so far,
for the CSRVIS I found no solution.

I've got a new braille display and hence trying to get used to it.
It's a Focus80. Some of the thing I read in the .ktb files dont work.
And I do not understand where the Hot1 -Hot8 buttons are.
I thought they might be one of the cursor routings littlbe knobs just
above the cells but they do nothing at all.
Any suggestions?

It is logical that blrtty needs a device to commnice through to the
braille-display, ttyUSB0, this device is created for that purpose.
It's certainly is not a bug, you need to find another device to connect
your uart to.

Hi Aura,
Did you have a look at the Optelec BC640 or bc680?
I have a bc69- 80 chars, too big for you I guess. But it has a lot of
buttons18, a bc640 would have 9, but you can combine buttons to an
actioan. There is also a sort ofcursor navagation toconfigure
preferences. It has bluetooth and can be fed through USB. It is very
reliable but also expensive.
Have a look at: optelec.nl

OK, I've got it, I had to build the package myself from the EPEL
distribution, but it is on board.

Re: [BRLTTY] connect a serial com braille display to mac running bootcamp windows

2021-09-10 Thread Adrian van Bloois
Hi Deniz,
I remember from th very beginning of this century that I tried to connect
my new laptop wish USB to the braille display I had at the time with
serial.
The converter I had, standard int the company, didn't work at all. A
colleguea had a private USB <>serial converter that did work perfectly.
Ik had a lot of trouble convincing the company to buy me a converter of
the same type and model.
So, there may be problems with the converter that you can only solve by
replacing it with a model that works.
I don't remember all the details, it is 20 years or so ago.

Re: [BRLTTY] The braillists forum and an article about reading in braille

2021-08-29 Thread Adrian van Bloois
Hi Sebastien,
Before I retired I worked in the computer business myslef for almost 40
years.
I was a Linux/Unix system engeneer and system manager.

As far as your second point, I always used 80 cell displays, except for
the first two years when I had a teltype producing 40 chars wide paper
output. I never ever wanted less then 80 cells, when things change on the
line you are reading you need to know immediatly befor the next value
appears. This is absolulely crucian in monitoring live systems.
If you're familar with Linux you could try e.g.: top -d 1
Lines can be very long and you don't know if something has changed at the
end of the line.
I'm surprised you use 40 cell displays, I could never have propperly do
my job without using an 80 cell display.

For software development is might be different, although the makeup of a
program can contribute enormously to the readibily, even for pour sighted
people like us.

Best wishes

Adrian

I experimented a little further.
I included my options in bc-smartpad.kti and they work.
It looks like brltty sees my display as a bc but not as a bc680.
I do the trick with the logging later today, I have to run now.

I did a grep in /etc/brltty/Input/al:
grep "SmartpadF1 " *
I had two results, one was my own in my.ktb the other was from
bc.smartpad.kti
I commented out the one in bc-smartpad.kti and restarted brltty.
No difference.

[BRLTTY] After upgrade to 6.3

2021-07-22 Thread Adrian van Bloois
Hi,
I just upgraded brltty to 6.3 from 6.1.
Some things no longer work as I expect them to.
Using an Optelec BC680 I set different things on SmartPadF1-4 like
this:

# Personal additions by Adrian P. van Bloois #

bind SmartpadF1 CSRVIS
bind SmartpadF3 CSRTRK+on
bind SmartpadF4 CSRTRK+off

These additions no longer work.
What has changed?
How can I restore the these functions?

[BRLTTY] Very usefull app

2020-09-10 Thread Adrian van Bloois

Hi List,
There is an APP for the iPhone that is able to read all sorts of stuff
and speak it.
I tried to read CD covers, a friend of mine read whiskey bottles and the
front of his TM-V71.
It can also read barcodes and tell you what product it is, tell you what
colours you show it, and tell which oject you show it.

The app is called: Supersense AI
You can find it in your appstore.
I don't know if it is also available for Android.

Have fun,
 Adrian

I worked as a programmer for ages and I never ever used brltty for this
sort of things.
Identation is within the text and to be interpreted by the reader.
There are programs to put identation on a source code within Linux e.g..
If you use a 40 cell display then you are using the wrong hammer for the
job.
In my professional life I alwasy worked with 80 cell displays.

I never had this, my machine is on 24x7 for weeks, no problems. So brltty
is sufficiently robust.
Maybe it's the flavour of Linux you run that causes the problem.
I'm running CentOS 7, latest updates installed.
CentOS 8 is stable as well with brltty.

Re: [BRLTTY] keycodes problem

2019-12-02 Thread Adrian van Bloois
Eric,
One more time.
EVERYTHING in Linux should be done without sudo="root permission" except
things like make install.
The chmod 0777 should not be necessary either.
Just set your umask correct something like 022 should do.
You have to keep security in mind as well.

Try to run:

It gives you a German radio station with lots of announcements usually.
