I dragged out my big Meade too, last night (weather forecast was for clouds
tonight, so I didn’t want to risk it).

Truly was awesome seeing two old friends, along with the Galilean moons and
Titan, all in the same field of view, even at higher powers. And the waxing
crescent moon had lots of great detail along the terminator.

We had a few noobs I our back yard as well. I know that seeing Saturn’s rings
for the first time is a memory I’ll never forget, and is always a Great thing
to share with others.

And we had folks stop by, some of whom had never see a star or the Moon through
a telescope before ever. That is always fun to be a part of, that first look
through a scope. It’s part of the pleasure of doing this stuff.

Nice moon view, too, as a bonus.

Actually we are on 20M and 30M WSPR.

The data is rerouted to the APRS network by WB8ELK after the maidenhead data is

2020-11-24 Thread Andy via BVARC
Hi Chris,

Your best bet for the tech specs is via ab5ss.blogspot.com

The WSPR data has embedded location info that is pulled out when WB8ELK’s
software picks it up and sends to the APRS network. The resolution is low since
only a 4-place maidenhead locator is sent, but it gives us the advantages of HF
(20M & 30M) WSPR for Gobi-desert type QTHs.

I to would be interested in knowing more regarding how BLT-62 is tracked. What
is show is way South of a place I spent time in, Korla, on the edge og the Gobi
dessert. That entire end of China is really desolate. Very neat stuff.

Re: [BVARC] Running Cables through the Roof

2020-05-06 Thread Andy via BVARC
When my roof was replaced about 20 years ago, the roofers had to accommodate
all of my cables to my ham-satellite antennas (10M – 13cm). They just put them
under the nearest shingles, and up to the antennas. It has never leaked, looks
professional, and I have had no issues. Some of the coax cables may be getting
old. I will just pull them out and feed new ones through the vacated hole(s).
There is a sealing product that I have used called “Through The Roof”. It has
done well on the holes in the garage roof caused by the basketball goal that is
no longer needed by the “kids”. I plan to use it when I swap out some coax
cables.

My other story is how I put the azimuth rotator for my Hamsat antennas on the
floor of the attic, and rotate it through the roof, with no leaks or issues…

I got the following idea from a posting a month or so ago on this listserver,
but cannot recall who posted it:

I want to add a ham antenna and I am thinking of running a piece of 1.5”-2"
roof pipe flashing with a gooseneck facing down to keep the weather out. This
way:

*I should be able to add whatever cables I want,
* it will save me probably 30 ft of cable.
* there would be less visible cable on my roof.

* And I can add future cables very easily by just poking it up through
this pipe.

It does mean I need to cut a hole through the roof, but I have other flashing
and vents on the roof, and they don’t leak.

I have not been able to find a satisfactory flashing product, since it has to
hold the pipe rigid. Most are meant for pvc vent access, where the pipe is
supported inside.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of flashing and how can I find
it?

No. These are super-lightweight payloads with APRS.

They are non-recoverable floaters.

BLT-54 has 2M APRS and 30M WSPR and a very expensive semi-super-pressure
balloon.

BLT-55 has 2M APRS and a Mylar balloon.

[BVARC] FW: [CTDXCC] Big ARRL board meeting next week

2019-07-08 Thread Andy via BVARC
Dear Ham Colleagues:

There may be, for the first time ever, an honest discussion about effectively
encrypted data in ham radio at the ARRL Board Meeting next week in Newington.

Please, Let all ARRL board members know your views on the need for ham radio to
avoid all effectively encrypted data such as is used in Winlink (ARQ and
proprietary compression) - urge the ARRL and FCC to insist that all data in ham
radio be open for public monitoring over the air.

Let other forums know..If we don't rally and let the ARRL and FCC know our
views this week, the ARRL Foundation and a majority of ARRL board members will
likely attempt to continue to move our hobby to this result:

https://pocketmags.com/us/american-survival-guide-magazine/august-2019/articles/594778/send-emails-by-ham-radio

And

  https://worldgonesilent.com/

Please- spread the word-- this week, please let all current board members know
your views about requiring complete data transparency, and to stop the use of
ham bands for emailing the general public, and spam and business use of email
that has been happening for years and will only get worse if we don't make
things open now.

Let your views be know this week. Please tell all ARRL Directors and the FCC
(please file your thoughts in favor of rm- 11831 and against 16-239 and
rm-11828), and speak with one voice that we need ALL data modes to be open for
public intercept in ham radio, and Winlink ( am "open and transparent
over-the-air Winlink)

and other wideband modes need their own separate subband, as requested in
RM-11831.

Here are some telemetry explanations from Thomas KT5TK.

Although the satellite count has gone to ZERO, we are still getting telemetry
from BLT-51 via aprs.fi and tracking on W5ACM-10. You can
approximate the location via the raw packets page, and checking the qth of the
last station that the beacon went through. Will the GPS data come back? We
don’t know, but there is quite the possibility that it simply froze overnight,
or lost the GPS antenna, etc. Watch for stations in the raw packets from the EU
in 3-4 days!

Hi Andy,

The definitions for the 5 APRS telemetry chanels are as follows:

1.) Vbat = Battery Voltage in Volts. I hope you have used a lithium AA battery
(not AAA) The Pecan Femto tracker should work down to 1.2 V at least

2.) SiTemp = Temperature measured in the Si4063 transmitter chip in degrees
Celsius (sorry forgot to change)

3.) ucTemp = Temperature measured in the micro controller chip in degrees
Celsius (sorry forgot to change)

4.) TTFF = Time to first fix. How long does it take until the GPS receiver gets
a (3D) position lock in seconds.

5.) Sats = Number of GPS satellites that were received to get the position lock.

The equations can be seen on the APRS.fi Telemetry page:
https://aprs.fi/telemetry/?call=W5ACM-10

_start=2019-03-23+14%3A00%3A00

Congrats on the launch and Hamfest from Berlin!

pond.

Now in South Carolina.

Weather looks clear ahead with a forecast of a wind direction of ENE 75
degrees.

Maybe it is going to take the great circle route to Europe.

Andy please explain a couple of the telemetry graphs.

Vbat in volts , got it. That little AAA battery is doing it's thing

SI temp and Uc temp, in degree C; they track close but not exact, what are they?

TTFF in seconds ??

Channel 5 doesn't seem to have a value or name.

I know I can change the value designators.

[BVARC] FW: FW: [BLT] [Ham-Radio-Tech-Notes] BLT-51

2019-03-24 Thread Andy via BVARC
Houston Hamfest and BLT Team,

BLT-51 is thus far a HUGE SUCCESS! We are currently headed up or off the coast
of South Carolina.

Here are some telemetry explanations from Thomas KT5TK.

Although the satellite count has gone to ZERO, we are still getting telemetry
from BLT-51 via aprs.fi and tracking on W5ACM-10. You can approximate the
location via the raw packets page, and checking the qth of the last station
that the beacon went through. Will the GPS data come back? We don’t know, but
there is quite the possibility that it simply froze overnight, or lost the GPS
antenna, etc. Watch for stations in the raw packets from the EU in 3-4 days!

_start=2019-03-23+14%3A00%3A00

Congrats on the launch and Hamfest from Berlin!

Ah! But BLT-51 (W5ACM-10) is now east of Louisiana! Yes, there may have been an
antenna problem with the cross-band repeater. This was our first attempt with
this type. We will take notes and try it again!

Re: [BVARC] FW: Balloons launched at Hamfest today - BLT-49.1 still afloat and heading for Florida

BLT-49.2 was a “popper”. It rose for over 2.5 hours to well over 110,000 ft,
and then came down into the Gulf of Mexico east of Galveston. That’s what
“poppers” do. This is a record altitude for one of these latex wonders!

BLT-49.1 speed now about 80 mph, headed to Ocala. Seems to be descending
slowly, but that could be the air currents at 29000 ft. Hoping it makes it
across Florida, into the Atlantic. Wonder what it would be like to be a
passenger on an airliner, and happen to pass nearby.

Listening for BLT-49.2 on 14.318, but only hearing noise at S7 level.

SRI missed the launch. I was busy setting up the TQP display.

This morning at the Houston Hamfest, we had a great balloon launch talk by Andy
MacAllister, W5ACM, followed by two successful balloon launches. The first
launch at 9:05am was BLT-49.2 and was a 300g 'popper' latex balloon carrying a
digital Fireball smart beacon sending the temperature in CW on 14.318 MHz &
28.322 MHz. We copied the weak CW beacon until 11:45am and believe it burst at
well over 110,000 feet based on the time aloft and temperatures we were
receiving. Very successful flight!

The second launch of BLT-49.1 occurred about 9:06am and was a 'floater' balloon
(1m Qualatex Mylar) carrying a PecanPico 5 APRS tracker. It rose very slowly
into the sky, escorted by several drones videoing the event, headed north then
shot off to the east passing over Houston, Beaumont and New Orleans. After
avoiding a few thunderstorms along the way, it is currently just below Panama
City, FL at ~30,000 feet heading for Orlando & KSC! It can be tracked on
aprs.fi or tracker.habhub.org (see links below). After crossing Florida, we're
hoping to hear from it again on the other side of the Atlantic!!! I'll post
pictures of the launch later when I get them.

2018-03-14 Thread Andy via BVARC
BLT Team!

We had a HUGE turnout this evening at Buffalo Wild Wings.

Attendees included (around the table) W5EZM, K5WH, AB5SS, W5MAB, N5RPQ, KC5JAR,
WB2GWV, K5ENG, N5EM, K5SAF, WA5TWT, K5VGM and W5ACM.

Of course the major topics discussed were random… but we certainly talked about
plans for Saturday’s BLT presentation at the GHHF – 8 AM in Building D.

We also mentioned the table we would have in Building B for “show and tell” BLT
relics and current items after the launches of BLT-41.1 and BLT-41.2 around
8:45 AM.

New updates to the GHHF can be seen at http://houstonhamfest.org/ . Check it
out.

Perhaps some folks can bring rigs and antennas for the APRS downlink and the
10M and 20M downlinks. Commit and let me know!

You can find new BLT49.1 and BLT-49.2 pictures and info at
http://www.w5acm.net/b4912.html .

October 13, 2017

Dear Andrew MacAllister (W5ACM),

This notice is being provided to Approve your proposed amateur radio station in
the 135.7 - 137.8 | 472.0 - 479.0 band(s) at the following coordinates: 29⁰ N
41’ 0”, 95⁰ W 37’ 0”. UTC has determined that your proposed amateur radio
station would not operate within a horizontal distance of one kilometer from a
transmission line that conducts a power line carrier (PLC) signal in the 135.7
- 137.8 | 472.0 - 479.0 bands.

An amateur operator must not operate an amateur station if UTC responds that
the proposed amateur station is located within 1 km of a transmission line with
a PLC system that operates on the same frequency or frequency range. Amateur
operators are advised that their operations within 1 km of a PLC system could
cause interference to PLC systems that are used by electric utilities to
protect their electric transmission systems against faults and electrical
outages. Interference from amateur operations could affect the operation of
PLC systems, thereby affecting the reliability of electric utility operations.
As such, amateur operators are advised not to operate any amateur stations
within 1 km of a transmission line with a PLC system that operates on the same
frequency or frequency range, and amateur operators will be subject to FCC
enforcement for unauthorized operations, as well as potential legal liability
for damages that result from interference caused by amateur operations to PLC

Hello Group ...

The propagation figures can be confusing and so here is a quick explanation:

HF Propagation Terms Explained If you are looking for overly technical
explanations, this might not be the best read for you, I like to keep things
simple. It’s possible that the information presented may not be completely
accurate, it’s only my interpretation of lots of things that I have read, or
heard. I can say that I have used this understanding of HF Propagation,
balanced against real monitoring over a number of years and found that what I
think should be happening looking at the numbers is usually about right. I do
however urge you to delve a bit deeper than this so you might better understand
HF Propagation.

SOLAR FLUX INDEX or SFI

SFI is a figure derived from the number of active sunspots visible on the face
of the sun based on observations of thermal and radio noise received at a
wavelength of 10.7cm. (2.8GHz). Thermal noise is related directly to the amount
of plasma trapped in the magnetic field in active regions of the sun, this is
related to the amount of magnetic flux generated by these active regions. The
higher the SFI the better for dx'ing on the higher HF bands.

SUNSPOTS

A SUNSPOT is an area of intense magnetic activity on the surface of the sun
which is cooler than the rest of the sun’s surface. Sunspots are vital for
long distance radio communications, linked as they are to the ionisation level
of the F layer. The more active sunspot groups, the more sunspots the better
the dx'ing on the higher HF bands.

SMOOTHED SUNSPOT NUMBER or SSN

When we plot the daily sunspot numbers, it's goes up and down all over the
place. so smart people came up with a way to average out the bumps, called
smoothing, which gives us the SMOOTHED SUNSPOT NUMBER or SSN. In the years
where there are few sunspots, propagation on the higher bands can be
nonexistent. It's not all bad news though as things on the low bands tend to
improve with decline in solar activity. Again larger SSN numbers mean better
conditions on the higher HF bands.

SOLAR CYCLE

Every 11 years or so the sun goes through a cycle of events. At the start of
this cycle, some new sunspots begin to show up on the blank solar disc. With
this first few sunspots things start to improve on the higher HF bands. More
and more sunspot groups show up over the years of the cycle, with continuing
improvements in HF activity. 11 years for the cycle is just an average, really
it can be from 9 to over 15 years. Solar activity refers to a combination of
the amount of sunspots, and the solar geomagnetic activity's effect on the
earth's magnetic field. For the higher HF bands more sunspots usually means
improved conditions.

A and K INDEX

When talking about the solar cycle the numbers are based on smoothed numbers,
this means the monthly average rather than the figures for each day. Using
'smoothed' numbers gives more accurate results, daily solar activity varies
dramatically, making accurate results difficult. A and K INDEX are measurements
of the magnetic field activity that are used in predictions.

The K index is a reading of the magnetic activity as compared to a quiet day
made from various locations. This index in the range 0-9. The K index is the
average of of these readings.

K = 0 Inactive
K = 1 Very quiet
K = 2 Quiet
K = 3 Unsettled
K = 4 Active
K = 5 Minor storm
K = 6 Major storm
K = 7 Severe storm
K = 8 Very severe storm
K = 9 Extremely severe storm
The A index relates to geomagnetic stability and is calculated from K indices
for the previous day.
A = 0 - 7 Quiet
A = 8 - 15 Unsettled
A = 16 - 29 Active
A = 30 - 49 Minor storm
A = 50 - 99 Major storm
A = 100 - 400 Severe storm

A quick example of the A & K numbers

If we are waiting for excellent conditions on the HF bands, then we are looking
A and K indices of 0 lasting for a few days. Combined with a high SFI.

If your interests are the lower HF bands, low A and K indices with very low SFI
numbers would be the go.

In the real world generally propagation conditions are OK when the A index is
10 or lower, and the K index is 3 or lower and the SFI above 90.

However there are countless stories about surprises on supposedly dead bands.

Basically:

The A index [ LOW is GOOD ]
· 1 to 6 best
· 7 to 9 is OK
· 11 or more not so good

If you look at the supposed message, “I'd rather walk than drive your car”, and
simultaneously listen, you can almost hear some of the letters in there. As a
Russian coworker once said to me after I had tried to say Hello, my name is
Andy in Russian... I can understand you, but it is not very good. This stuff
however, is more like EVPs on Coast to Coast AM... imagination rules...

Re: [BVARC] Recommendation Needed -- 2 Meter Mobile

2015-06-05 Thread Andy via BVARC
Perhaps saying that the manual could use some improvements is an understatement!

True, I doubt if I would want it for a motorcycle… but in the Prius, it has
been just fine.
I did not use any software or other external methods to program it.
It was ‘entertaining” to set up various functions.
BTW: The time-out timer defaults to 30 seconds.
That was the first thing I changed.

Fun cheap throw-down rig.
I would get another, and most of the eham reviews on it really aren’t that
harse.
Overall it got 3.2/5.

Re: [BVARC] Amateur Radio TV??

2015-05-10 Thread Andy via BVARC
Hi Bruce, Ralph and BVARC,

Tragically the Houston Amateur Television Society, HATS, shut down all
operations several years ago. However, a number of us continue with ATV
experiments via High Altitude Balloon flights. We have a dinner meeting this
coming Wednesday evening (May 13, 2015) at Buffalo Wild Wings on I-10 W, just a
few hundred yards east of Bunker Hill and I-10 W (south side of I-10 W) at 5:30
PM. Instructions on how to subscribe to the South Texas Balloon Launch Team
remailer can be found at the bottom of the front page of http://www.w5acm.net .

This Wednesday we will be discussing the schedule for the August 15th launch of
BLT-42.

BLT-42 will fly DVB-T UHF ATV, and several other curious payloads.

KT5TK will be showing how to run and use DL-FLdigi.

Local free WiFi at BWW is available.

Bring a laptop and 70-cm SSB receiver, or appropriate UHF dongle with SDR and
participate.

The Second Baptist School will be flying a balloon from Brenham on May 20th.

They need launch and chase support for the flight.

There will be 2M APRS and 70-cm digital data with digital imaging, decodable
via DL-FLdigi.

Get a preview of this SW from th UK High Altitude Society at
https://ukhas.org.uk/projects:dl-fldigi .

If you have any questions, my best email is
andrew.macallis...@emerson.commailto:andrew.macallis...@emerson.com with a
copy to w5...@amsat.orgmailto:w5...@amsat.org .

That's why the Cone of Satisfaction is two dimensional. It does not consider
propagation as a factor. During any given set of atmospheric conditions, you
will always do at least as well or as worse than anyone else, depending on
your relative positions in the Cone of Satisfaction.

Does it really matter? If a person believes that a FOUR times increase in
power makes a difference then, it makes a difference. This is the doctrine of
perceived value. It has been used by every salesman since the invention of
the wheel.

Amplifier manufacturers do not talk about the measly one S-unit increase or a
tiny 6 DB increase? No, they talk about hundreds of watts, thousands of
watts. Bigger is better, no matter what.

Remember, K5HM's Theorem of Ham Radio Satisfaction. There only two important
measurements. Antenna height in feet and Power in watts. If you have plenty
of both, all other measurements take care of themselves. See attached chart.
You want to be in the Cone of Satisfaction.

The responses have been fantastic...from full technical diatribes to
psycho-analysis you're just hearing things. ;-)

I sincerely appreciate all that commented. I will put together a comprehensive
e-mail outlining all that was said, so we will have that on record. You have
answered my question from all angles and provided me with 1) the technical
fodder for the slides in my SWR talk; 2) a definite change in my amplifier
set-up; and 3) the possibility of a new presentation -- Tube-type Linear

==

I am working on a presentation about losses within the antenna system and have
come across a question that I have always wanted to ask.

-- Why does going from 100 watts (barefoot) to 400 watts (adding a linear)
seem to make such a big difference in on air performance/audio punch etc.?

My observations -- Even though it is only x 4 -- 6dB - one S-unit -- it
sounds like, most times, a larger jump.
Sometimes the receiver indicates a larger jump too, S-meter wise, which
points to a receive chain performance issue - non linear AGC gain response. I
am guessing here.

Anyone care to voice some insight?

Try fiddling with the RF gain control for a similar noise reduction.

Re: [BVARC] Best buys in portable generators?

2014-10-16 Thread Andy via BVARC
WA5WOD was on the end of the list for power-line repairs after Ike. His 2KW
Honda did wonders (window unit and regular refrigerator). My el-cheapo Harbor
Freight generator was fine for a few days of keeping the freezer frozen and
running things like the electric chain saw, but WA5WOD went two weeks before
power was restored. The Honda was stellar. Enough said... If I could afford a
Honda, I would get one... Perhaps I should consider the consequences of NOT
having one...

Rob,

This is an excellent question.

First, let me congratulate you on your new Woodville acquisition. Is it going
to be a retirement property?

The generator you likely want is the Honda 2KW unit. There is an ad in QST
every month offering it for a special price to hams. It is much more than a
generator. It also includes an inverter that yields a sine wave output,
similar to the output supplied by the local power company. This means it is
perfect for your radio gear. Additionally, it is lightweight and quiet. You
will get spoiled by these attributes, compared to other generators in the same
class. Finally, there is little maintenance to perform to keep the unit in
tip-top shape. You will likely get 12 or more hours of operation from one tank
of gas.

Having recommended the Honda, there may be reasons to get a different unit.
For example, if you are looking to have a standby generator for an RV, portable
building or small house, with appliances using 240 volts, the Honda will not do
the job. I bought a Briggs and Stratton Storm Responder (5500 watts
continuous/8500 watts surge) to provide standby power for my barn (B and S
sells a heavy duty cable for this purpose, or you can get the parts from
Lowes). This generator costs about the same as the Honda, but has a 240 volt
output. It is heavy, but rolls around fairly well on hard ground. It always
starts with one pull. I keep it full of gas at all times, and add Briggs and
Stratton fuel preservative, available at Wal-Mart. There are enough power
outages here to run it at least two times each year. I found 1 ounce per 2
gallons of gas keeps the gas fresh at least four years. That’s how long I
waited after hurricane Ike to drain the tank and refill with fresh gas. I then
burned the gas in my lawn mower without a problem.

You can find many generators that claim to compare with the above units, but
for much less cash. I don’t have any experience with these, but have heard
from others that the cheap units do not last long, and usually have maintenance
issues, something you really don’t need when there is a power outage.

Subject: [BVARC] Best buys in portable generators?

Hello all,

Closed on my ham friendly QTH in Woodville TX and starting on Oct. 24th will
start stringing some nice wire antennas until I can get a tower up.

I would like to back everything up with a portable generator which would also
be nice to have for roving, and park work.

Opinions: who has the best buys in portable generators? Yamaha prices are right
up with Honda now, but now I see Generac, Ryobi and Hyundai all making less
expensive but comparable output generators.

Thanks in advance for your input.

So when you are stuck in a big pile up or you just can’t get that antenna to
