That was the real benefit of having pros as mentors. They seemed to know every
trick to get the shot that was needed. I had never heard of High-Speed
Recording Film until Danny told me about it. Then he told me to push the
development to move the ASA from 1000 to 4000. The football shots were a little
grainy, but the action was captured, and it made little difference in the
newspaper picture.

Othell was a good friend and mentor for me during my college and early "after
graduating" years. I met him through a neighbor who was a District Fire Chief,
Max MacRae. I was doing a lot of freelance spot news photography then. After he
was burned in the Mykawa Road railcar explosion, he recovered at Houston
Methodist Hospital, where I worked. I visited him almost daily. Every time I
pick up a camera, I think of him and his "well equipped" car.

Back in the late 60”s early 70’s I worked at a 2 way radio shop. There was a
Houston Chronicle reporter Othell Onsby (not sure of the spelling) that drove a
car with this many antennas on it.  I remember he had like 6 or 7 motrac 2 way
radios & a stack of 6 or 7 Sonar scanners on the passenger side floorboard. He
monitored every police & fire dept in the Houston area. I worked on that car
many times. He was critically burned in the 1974 Mykawa train derailment &
explosion. Spent many months in the Hospital but went right back to work after
his release, burns quite visible. He was a good guy. Always friendly, Robert

My assumption would be that none of the cameras or the antennas are actually
attached to anything.   it is either an art car or something designed to scare
away the hoodlums in an apartment.

who has 20 radios to attach all the antennas to, and the cameras would need a
DVR running on 120v  and while not impossible it is unlikely.

Re: [BVARC] Need equipment and training advice

2022-10-18 Thread James Burrough via BVARC
Jimmy, it was a pleasure to meet you Saturday at the UH Amateur Radio Club
meeting. I will be most happy to mentor you in the basics of Ham Radio. I have
some radios I can loan to you that will help you in putting to use the
additional frequencies you gained with your upgrade to General.
I live on Holt, just across the freeway from BHS. Since I am retired, I am
available almost any time you want to get together.

Hello all,Back in 2018, I took Dr. Pat Reiff's class on the physics of HAM
radio at Rice University as teacher professional development. I passed the
technician exam back then. (I teach physics and astronomy at a school in
Houston ISD.) Now I am taking the class again for credit as a graduate student
at the University of Houston and last night I passed the general exam. I have a
DMR and a handy talkie, both by TYT. But I am still struggling to learn how to
actually make contacts and how to use my radios.
Dr. Pat connected to a BVARC net back in August and I made a contact with the
operator. (If I entered the details into my QRZ logbook correctly, I made
contact with WX5KR.) That night I joined BVARC. I also recently joined the UH
ARC as well. But I still don't know what I am doing really. I am looking for
advice on how to learn to use my 2 radios. As a teacher and a graduate student,
I don't have a lot of time to attend meetings but I want to get involved in the
community at large.
The DMR handset is a TYT model MD-UV390 with a code plug from 2018. The handy
talkie is TYT model TH-UV88.
I am a technically competent person with a lot of knowledge about the physics
of radio waves and lots of "computery" skills but I can't even figure out how
to change frequencies on the TYT handy talkie. I can muddle through on the DMR
handset but again, using the interface on the unit makes me feel clumsy and
frustrated.
I am looking for some good resources on learning HAM stuff so I can become a
competent user of my equipment and can make contacts. I'd like to get a home or
car setup eventually but I need to master these little radios and make some
contacts first.
Any advice is
appreciated.Thanks,JimmyN5JFX

I had a similar experience Friday just before the CQWW SSB got started. I
heard echoes on two New England stations that indicated a long-path/short-path
combined signal on the stations. Saturday, during the contest, I had contact on
10-meters with a Hong Kong station where he was S3 on short-path when I first
heard him. He mentioned he was pointing his beam to the U.S. via long-path. I
turned the beam 180 degrees and completed the QSO with him at S9.

installed a SSD as an upgrade and she uses it daily.

The website below has good information that will go a long way to answer your
question. Look at the elevation as fractions of wavelength and relative gain in
the favored direction (for your dipole, perpendicular in both directions).

Re: [BVARC] Lightning Strike

2017-01-16 Thread James Burrough via BVARC
I would like to reinforce what Nizar said about the root cause of your
lightening strike. The damage to your location and the damage to your neighbors
along the same power source lines (Mains) indicates a possible set of major
flaws in either design of the power company's grounding system or its
maintenance. What you do from your end will like matter little if their end
remains problematical.

Gayle,  Most of the lightening damage at remote locations like beach houses and
farms come from power lines getting hit by lighting. Most of these power lines
are above ground and susceptible to lighting strikes. Talk to the electric

had no radio gear or antennas there…which brings me to here…My NOW attempt to
layer my radio shack for protection against lightning.  Like unplug radio,
power and cables, ground radio chassis.  I’ve have heard an antenna doesn’t
get hit as such until you ground it at which time it becomes a lightning rod
and as such now attracts lightning, so don’t worry about the tower as much as
the lines coming in.  Is this correct?  Sorry for being so chit-chatty guys but
this is a real concern that got personal with the lightning.  I don’t have much
protection at all except a copper rod outside my window with the radio chassis
grounded there.  I guess I need to add more protection.  I have watched you
guys at field day just ground the line, I thought, coming off the antenna in to
the radio area, was there more I didn't see?

Re: [BVARC] N5XZ ARRL 10-Meter Contest

2016-12-12 Thread James Burrough via BVARC
Your contacts will get their points.
There is another aspect to this. Not submitting a log means your participation
is not counted by the sponsoring organization. This may seem trivial but your
investment of the few minutes it takes to submit your log means that the
sponsoring organization knows of your participation and knows you appreciate
the hard work they do to put on these contests. Plus, it is good practice for
you for the times you might have a bigger log to report.

Re: [BVARC] Isn't the antenna supposed to be up in the air?

2015-07-23 Thread James Burrough via BVARC
My 80 dipole (when up) is configured as a lazy V with one element running North
and the other to the West from the feedpoint at the back of the yard. While I
was never very strong on the Ragchew Net, I usually had no problems checking
into the Monday night ARES 75 M net. Everything was at 10 feet above the
ground. Not as good as my 40 M NVIS antenna but still usable. The point is to
communicate - it gets the job done.

Subject: [BVARC] Isn't the antenna supposed to be up in the air?  Hi all,  From
the it-doesn't-have-to-be-perfect-to-work department   So, yesterday
evening I did my third check-in to the BVARC Ragchew net on 3910.  I don't
expect much from my signal -- it's an 80 meter inverted-V dipole only 20 feet
high.  John, K5LKJ, seemed to hear me as well as he heard me the previous two
weeks.  (My QTH is Dickinson.)  So after the net my wife remarks, Isn't your
antenna supposed to be up in the air?  Curious, and more than slightly
alarmed, I go outside to the backyard and see that the inverted-V support -- a
20 ft push-up painters pole has partially collapsed, undoubtable due to the
friction fittings loosening due to repeated cycles of afternoon heating and
nighttime cooling.  The feedpoint of the 80 meter dipole is now only 10 feet
above the ground, one leg of the dipole is only 6 feet above the ground, and
the other leg is laying on the ground!
Yet, at least some of the listeners on the net heard me.  :)  Now, I don't
think I'm going to work western Europe with this set up, but it has been one of
the most important lessons of amateur radio for me that an antenna can deviate
wildly from theoretical perfection and still be effective, as long as one is
willing to be generous in defining the word effective.  :D  73,-- /*/-=[Michael

Re: [BVARC] VHF simplex Local contest

2014-10-05 Thread James Burrough via BVARC
What do you mean by a lack of big guns? There was a 50 watt limit to power.
Short of a multi-beam array, there was not a lot of big gun capability. I had
an 8dB gain vertical up at 38 feet. That was the best i could do.

I plan to participate again next year but will be a rover taking advantage of
the WU/Bellaire/Southside Place/Houston interface within easy driving distance
of my QTH. I figure and hour in each place and home for supper by 5:02 PM.

It was challenging to say the least. But, for me the challenge was not
unexpected. What was lacking was the presence of any big gun stations.
Reflecting back on the HF contests that I've worked in the past, the Big Gun
stations serve a purpose by giving the little pistols a target. Without big
gun stations you have a bunch of little pistols running around struggling to
hear each other. That is my impression of this contest.
As an outsider looking in, there seem to have been an unhealthy amount of
frustration. I say unhealthy, because frustration can discourage the very
operators that we are trying to entice into contesting.
All that said, I believe this event will get better as time goes on. In fact,
this is the kind of event that could be held multiple times throughout the
year. And as awareness of the event grows, hopefully we'll see more stations on
the air that have better coverage and can keep the lower power stations active
and busy making contacts.

I will be on air today between 1PM -5PM ( on and off) to give points in the

146.520 should not be used in the contest as is the national simplex call
freq. The power limit is 50 watts and QRP low power catagory only up to 5
watts. If you live in a city other than Houston like Bellaire, South Side
Place, Hedwig Village ect you will be a sought after multiplier in the
contest. Please help support this local club contest sponsored by KARS and
help some of our newer Hams that may only at this time have a VHF radio to get
the feel and excitement of contest.

As I said on the 2 meter QSO this afternoon, send me an .adi file of your

How do you determine what the multipliers are in the SSB NAQP Contest?

ie on   80 meters I had 2 QSO into Louisiana
15 meters I had 3 QSO to Washington, Oregon and California
etcetera for 20 and 40

with 2 or three EU stations worked.
