Re: [BVARC] Perfect ham radio car
That was the real benefit of having pros as mentors. They seemed to know every trick to get the shot that was needed. I had never heard of High-Speed Recording Film until Danny told me about it. Then he told me to push the development to move the ASA from 1000 to 4000. The football shots were a little grainy, but the action was captured, and it made little difference in the newspaper picture. Re: [BVARC] Need equipment and training advice
Jimmy, it was a pleasure to meet you Saturday at the UH Amateur Radio Club meeting. I will be most happy to mentor you in the basics of Ham Radio. I have some radios I can loan to you that will help you in putting to use the additional frequencies you gained with your upgrade to General. I live on Holt, just across the freeway from BHS. Since I am retired, I am available almost any time you want to get together. Jim, N5DTTOn Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 10:46:40 AM CDT, Jimmy Newland via BVARC wrote: Hello all,Back in 2018, I took Dr. Pat Reiff's class on the physics of HAM radio at Rice University as teacher professional development. I passed the technician exam back then. (I teach physics and astronomy at a school in Houston ISD.) Now I am taking the class again for credit as a graduate student at the University of Houston and last night I passed the general exam. I have a DMR and a handy talkie, both by TYT. But I am still struggling to learn how to actually make contacts and how to use my radios. Dr. Pat connected to a BVARC net back in August and I made a contact with the operator. (If I entered the details into my QRZ logbook correctly, I made contact with WX5KR.) That night I joined BVARC. I also recently joined the UH ARC as well. But I still don't know what I am doing really. I am looking for advice on how to learn to use my 2 radios. As a teacher and a graduate student, I don't have a lot of time to attend meetings but I want to get involved in the community at large. The DMR handset is a TYT model MD-UV390 with a code plug from 2018. The handy talkie is TYT model TH-UV88. I am a technically competent person with a lot of knowledge about the physics of radio waves and lots of "computery" skills but I can't even figure out how to change frequencies on the TYT handy talkie. I can muddle through on the DMR handset but again, using the interface on the unit makes me feel clumsy and frustrated. I am looking for some good resources on learning HAM stuff so I can become a competent user of my equipment and can make contacts. I'd like to get a home or car setup eventually but I need to master these little radios and make some contacts first. Any advice is appreciated.Thanks,JimmyN5JFX Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org Publicly available archives are available here: https://www.mail-archive.com/bvarc@bvarc.org/ Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org Publicly available archives are available here: https://www.mail-archive.com/bvarc@bvarc.org/

Re: [BVARC] Echo on receive DX.
I had a similar experience Friday just before the CQWW SSB got started. I heard echoes on two New England stations that indicated a long-path/short-path combined signal on the stations. Saturday, during the contest, I had contact on 10-meters with a Hong Kong station where he was S3 on short-path when I first heard him. He mentioned he was pointing his beam to the U.S. via long-path. I turned the beam 180 degrees and completed the QSO with him at S9. Re: [BVARC] N5XZ ARRL 10-Meter Contest
Your contacts will get their points. There is another aspect to this. Not submitting a log means your participation is not counted by the sponsoring organization. This may seem trivial but your investment of the few minutes it takes to submit your log means that the sponsoring organization knows of your participation and knows you appreciate the hard work they do to put on these contests. Plus, it is good practice for you for the times you might have a bigger log to report. Hi all, From the it-doesn't-have-to-be-perfect-to-work department So, yesterday evening I did my third check-in to the BVARC Ragchew net on 3910. I don't expect much from my signal -- it's an 80 meter inverted-V dipole only 20 feet high. John, K5LKJ, seemed to hear me as well as he heard me the previous two weeks. (My QTH is Dickinson.) So after the net my wife remarks, Isn't your antenna supposed to be up in the air? Curious, and more than slightly alarmed, I go outside to the backyard and see that the inverted-V support -- a 20 ft push-up painters pole has partially collapsed, undoubtable due to the friction fittings loosening due to repeated cycles of afternoon heating and nighttime cooling. The feedpoint of the 80 meter dipole is now only 10 feet above the ground, one leg of the dipole is only 6 feet above the ground, and the other leg is laying on the ground! Yet, at least some of the listeners on the net heard me. :) Now, I don't think I'm going to work western Europe with this set up, but it has been one of the most important lessons of amateur radio for me that an antenna can deviate wildly from theoretical perfection and still be effective, as long as one is willing to be generous in defining the word effective. :D 73,-- /*/-=[Michael / KT5MR]-=/*/ ___ BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org ___ BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org

What do you mean by a lack of big guns? There was a 50 watt limit to power. Short of a multi-beam array, there was not a lot of big gun capability. I had an 8dB gain vertical up at 38 feet. But, for me the challenge was not unexpected. What was lacking was the presence of any big gun stations. Reflecting back on the HF contests that I've worked in the past, the Big Gun stations serve a purpose by giving the little pistols a target. Without big gun stations you have a bunch of little pistols running around struggling to hear each other. That is my impression of this contest. As an outsider looking in, there seem to have been an unhealthy amount of frustration. I say unhealthy, because frustration can discourage the very operators that we are trying to entice into contesting. All that said, I believe this event will get better as time goes on. In fact, this is the kind of event that could be held multiple times throughout the year. And as awareness of the event grows, hopefully we'll see more stations on the air that have better coverage and can keep the lower power stations active and busy making contacts.
