You can tell that 2m is open if you listen to FM broadcast in the 
morning and nearby stations that usually come in strong are getting 
interfered with by more distant stations.  It's a sign of tropo ducting, 
and no it's not limited to just SSB and CW.  I've been meaning to try my 
new 6m antenna, but I've been too lazy to set it up in the mornings.

2 meter FM has been exceptional during the hours right before sunrise to
about 10AM or so.  I personally heard repeaters all the way from Dallas to
San Antonio.  I had a simplex contact in Winnie as well and several others
