[BVARC] Meeting audio

2024-04-12 Thread John Parmalee via BVARC
Mike, I live a couple of counties north of your meeting fire station. I
have come down a couple of time but it is a long drive home and with the
random violence that seems to be occurring randomly after dark I prefer to
come to the meetings via zoom. This despite the offer of free food which I
heard was pretty good.

The video is a bit sketchy but what is difficult is the audio. It is loud
enough but the rumble in the room makes it difficult to understand. The
lack of a close microphone.

Could I suggest that there be a microphone or two dedicated close to the
speakers each and a mixer maned by some on with headphones on listing to the

improvement would be golden.

I think that having the Zoom meeting both allows people who couldn't
normally attend to at least hear the information, and (to a degree)
gives us recordings of each presentation for free. I do think that, in
its current state, the Zoom setup is a little too buggy to be enjoyable.
Perhaps simply recording each meeting's business + presentation and then
uploading it onto bvarc.org would be a good solution.

Good Afternoon,

This entire topic should be a discussion at a BOD meeting to hash out this
specific issues.
Overly emotional rants and admonishment of club members and club
planning and activities is a huge turn off and unnecessary drama.

There are some good ideas floating in this thread, but I don't think this
is the right venue to try to resolve the problem.

The reactions are very far apart from the actual problems and even
further from a real solution.

Have Fun,

Re: [BVARC] Thursday BVARC meeting I am pissed...

2023-04-14 Thread John Denison via BVARC
The meeting wasn't in Stafford. It was in West Houston close to the
Bellaire & Addicks Clodine intersection.

We all know hams love food, but it shouldn't be the deciding factor if
people are going to attend. I checked the BVARC Beacon and emails from
the reflector and I saw no mention of food, and other than on the Ice
Cream Social & Chili Supper, food wasn't really a part of the BVARC
General Membership Meetings.

There was an email from Jeff Greer that asked people to specify whether
they were going to attend, but unfortunately I didn't notice that in my
email application until today. I've never seen a survey in my emails before.

One question I have is how does this meetings attendance compare to
other months' meetings? I agree that RSVPs would help in this situation.
If a large number had showed up and still not ate anything, would it be
any different?

I stopped going because of my work schedule, but I wonder what can we do
to motivate people to start attending again like they did ten years ago.

btw I did not mean to bypass Robert Polinski's post about meetings. I
think it would be good to know if there are consistent issues with
people attending the meetings.

Re: [BVARC] Thursday BVARC meeting I am pissed...

2023-04-14 Thread Scott Medbury via BVARC
With over 330 members please don't think you are being singled out. You
took the time to participate by zoom along with roughly 10% of the club
including in-person attendees.

Somehow, I do not think all the rest were playing bingo at the VFW.

Re: [BVARC] Thursday BVARC meeting I am pissed...

2023-04-13 Thread David F. Reed via BVARC
Perhaps the club should ask for RSVP maybe a week before the meeting, and
whether they will be there in person or by Zoom.
That should give you a better estimate of attendance than blind guessing.

I admit I am surprised (but not pissed) by the fact that no one has thought of
this before…

2022-09-20 Thread Eddie Runner via BVARC

an American sound and radio engineer most well known for creating the template
for modern rock sound systems. He founded the company Heil Sound in 1966,[1]
which went on to create unique touring sound systems for bands such as The
Grateful Dead and The Who.[2] He invented the Heil Talk Box in 1973, which was
frequently used by musicians such as Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh and Richie
Sambora, and is still in use today.[3]

Heil has been an innovator in the field of amateur radio, manufacturing
microphones and satellite dishes for broadcasters and live sound engineers.[4]
In the late 1980s Heil Sound became one of the first American companies to
create and install home theaters, and Heil has lectured at major electronic
conventions and taught classes at various institutions.[5]

He has won multiple awards and honors, and in 2007 he was invited to exhibit at
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

That's correct; the meeting is about the George Observatory, but the meeting
will happen over Zoom.

The meeting is via zoom - and is not being conducted at the park. At least

I'm looking forward to hearing more about the 36" telescope there.

2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“An HF Systems Engineering Approach in the Search for Ame
 lia Earhart’s L10E”\n\nBy Tom Vinson\, NY0V\n\nOn July 2nd\, 1937 Amer
ica’s favorite Aviatrix\, Amelia Earhart and her navigator\, Fred Noonan
went missing over the central Pacific Ocean.\n\nHer last radio signals we
re copied by the radio operators on the USCG Cutter Itasca. She had to be
close\, but after an unprecedented search by the US Navy\, not a single tr
ace of the aircraft was ever found. What happened to Amelia Earhart is one
of the last great unsolved mysteries of the 20th century. This presentatio
n will cover how Rockwell Collins engineers utilized an HF Systems enginee
ring approach to arrive at a distance from Earhart’s L10E to Howland Isl
and for each of her HF transmissions.\n\n\nNote: Due to our NDA’s with N
auticos Corporation\, no final results will be shown.\n\n\nBiography for T
om Vinson\n\nTom Vinson retired from Rockwell Collins\, Cedar Rapids\, IA
after 33 years in engineering and Program Management. During this time he
was responsible for program management of Rockwell Collins’ ARC-190 High
Frequency Communications\, USAF MILSTAR Satellite System components\, and
Advanced Network Datalinks.\n\n\nHe provided another 2 years of professio
nal consulting to Rockwell Collins until he and his wife\, Karen\, moved t
o Chatfield Minnesota in 2010.\n\n\nHe is on the Board of Directors of the
Chosen Valley Community Foundation\, as well as SeaWord\, Nauticos Corpor
 ation’s non-profit educational foundation.\n\n\nIn 1999 Tom formed a tea
m from the Collins Amateur Radio Club members to look at the Amelia Earhar
t disappearance from an engineering perspective. Under the auspices of Nau
ticos’ SeaWord STEM initiatives\, Rockwell Collins supported Tom in both
the 2002 and 2006 deep water SONAR searches for Nauticos’ Earhart Disco
very Project. They also supported the STEM education for the 2017 expediti
on. Since those expeditions Tom has provided dozens of Earhart Search STEM
presentations to local schools\, civic and professional organizations\, a
nd various amateur radio clubs.Tom is still active in his 54th year in ama
teur radio and enjoys the outdoors through running\, biking\, hiking\, kay
 aking\, XC skiing and fishing.\n\n

That's it as far as removing it. You can now reboot and wait for the GUI's WiFi
menu to become populated with the local SSIDs or go to the console again and
run sudo raspi-config and select 2: Network Options, followed by N2: Wi-Fi and
enter in your WiFi SSID and passphrase. In addition, the Ethernet will also
behave normally.

[BVARC] Meeting presentation topic list / do you know anyone who can present

2019-06-19 Thread Martin Blaise via BVARC
Note: long list, but hope its useful.
This is a two-part email. First is to share my recently updated list of
possible radio presentations for ham radio club meetings. Secondly, I'm
still looking for people who are "experts" or soft-of-experts in these
topics. I work with the Houston ECHO Society and try to have meaningful
presentations. We also want to have presentations that today's youth might
be interested in. If you have ever done a presentation on anything below

[BVARC] K3, N1MM and FT8 training for FD at the BVARC meeting tomorrow evening

2019-05-08 Thread Nizar Mullani via BVARC
On behalf of BVARC and FD organizers, I want to remind the members that
there will be hands-on training on Elecraft K3, N1MM and FT8 tomorrow
evening at the BVARC membership meeting at the Sugar Land Masonic Lodge, 421
Eldridge Road, Sugar Land. The meeting is open to all the clubs
participating in the Mega Field Day. There will be a follow up meeting in
June on additional training if needed. Here is the program for the training
sessions tomorrow.

6:45 pm -7:30 pm - K3 and N1MM by Curt WG5H and Nizar K0NM

Two K3/0 remotes will be set up with
computers and N1MM

One of the rigs will be for SSB and the
other for CW operation

These two rigs will be set up in the front
lobby. You will be able to make

QSOs in CW and SSB during the training.

8:00 pm - 8:45 pm - Live demonstration of FT8 operation by W5VOM Bill
Cordell

Bill will hook up remotely to his rig at the
Bay house and demonstrate the

Key features on how to operate FT8 during
Field Day.

There will additional training sessions next month at the June BVARC
meeting. Let the board members know what aspect of the training you would
like to see again.

Re: [BVARC] April BVARC Meeting

2019-03-28 Thread Jonathan Guthrie via BVARC
Up until last month, I had a standing meeting on the same day as the
BVARC meeting, and I had this other group change their meeting so I
could attend BVARC.

I have extensive experience with Arduino, though, and more Nano's than I
can use.  (I'm making a keyer with a nano and a Raspberry Pi, and I
bought extra Nano's just because.)  So, although I'm going to try to be
there, I won't participate.

We’ll cover the basics of getting started with the Arduino, and do
some simple programming. We encourage /YOUR/ participation. Sign up
for your very own Arduino Nano by sending an email to
mailto:j...@noxon.cc. The cost for this little device is four bucks
(exactly 4/10’s of a sawbuck) and will be yours to keep and continue
to learn on. Participants will need to bring a laptop/notebook
computer with USB, a mini-USB data cable and perhaps the power supply
for your computer. No laptop? Let me know and I’ll bring one for you
to use (supply is limited).

This program needs you, and even if you do not want hands-on
participation with your very own Arduino, you can still learn how much
fun there is by watching others have fun. There are dozens of projects
for Ham Radio already published by the ARRL in book, QST articles and
QEX articles. Search the internet using the key phrase ‘ham radio
arduino’. I did just that and got over 7 million hits!

All the available Arduino Nanos are not yet spoken for, but to be
fair, first come first served.

[BVARC] Fwd: Request for presentation at April BVARC meeting

2018-04-07 Thread KE5ITH via BVARC

Mike I’m not going to be able to make the meeting today. Jeff
has agreed to do a presentation at the next bvarc meeting.
I have a uhaul full of stuff I wasn’t expecting to take back to Austin yet but
the realtor suggested taking it out. So we will be headed to Austin after
breakfast. I will pass the key and mail over to Jon Noxon at breakfast.
Thanks, KeithKe5ith
