Re: [BVARC] BVARC POTA @ Galveston Island SP 3/26

2023-03-21 Thread Kori Rahman via BVARC
Rudy and all,

The POTA website has a guide you can review here:
https://docs.pota.app/docs/activator_reference/activator_guide-english.html

I'll try to get some more paperwork together for the stations for Sunday,
including a "how to call" sheet like we had at Winter Field Day and
hamfest. I will also be printing paper logs for those who choose to use
them. But the quick and simple example is below using the club call sign:

   - Find a clear frequency by tuning through the band in the voice portion
of that band (band plans will be on the table).
   - After sitting on a frequency for about 2 full minutes, if nothing is
heard, move to the next step.
   - Key up and say *"This is KK5W, is this frequency in use? Is the
frequency in use?*" Do this about 3 times pausing for about 10 full
   seconds between key ups.
   - If nothing has been heard, proceed by calling parks on the air (make
sure you have the POTA designator for the park you are in, noted, Galveston
   Island State Park is K-3013).
   - Start calling CQ by keying up and saying* "This is
Kilo-kilo-five-whisky calling CQ Parks on the Air from
Kilo-three-zero-one-three, CQ parks on the air, CQ parks on the air, this
is Kilo-kilo-five-whiskey calling CQ parks on the air and standing by"*
   - Wait for calls back, if nothing is heard then repeat the above every
   10 seconds.
   - When someone comes back, log their call sign and signal report, key up
and give them their signal report. For example if WX5KR responds then you
say: "*Whisky-X-ray-five-kilo-romeo you are five-nine into park
   kilo-three-zero-one-three QSL?*"
   - They will typically respond *"QSL I have you five and seven in South
   Carolina Sugar-Charlie QSL?"*
   - You can then clear with them by acknowledging their report and
location (if given) like so *"QSL I copy five and seven into South
Carolina, thanks for the contact and 73!"*
   - Pause to see if they say anything further. If nothing is heard
continue calling CQ* "This is Kilo-kilo-five-whisky calling CQ Parks on
the Air from Kilo-three-zero-one-three, CQ CQ parks on the air" *
   - Some additional things to note:
  - If you only hear a partial call sign in a pile up, just repeat what
you heard e.g. you hear *"_???_Kilo-Delta" *Simply call out *"Station
ending Kilo-Delta, again again?" *They should come back with their
call sign again and everyone else (hopefully) stops transmitting. This
method applies if you hear another POTA station too. Just say* "I
heard a park-to-park station, the park-to-park stations ONLY try
it again"*
  - If you are in a pile up, instead of calling CQ after every contact,
you can simply say* "This is Kilo-kilo-five-whisky QRZ"*. Don't
simply say "QRZ", because you might end up forgetting to ID or people may
miss your call sign. When you say QRZ, you *don't* use phonetics, but
you do pronounce the Z as "zed".* This is true for all Q-codes (QSL,
QRT, QRO, QRP,..) on HF SSB. They are NOT spoken using the NATO phonetic
  alphabet.*

Hope that helps. Thanks and 73!

BVARC friends,
It's that time again! BVARC's monthly Parks On The Air (POTA) event is coming
up on Sunday, March 26th at Galveston Island State Park! That's a little under
2 weeks from now. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS! This is an official BVARC event,
and we will be using the club call sign KK5W. If you're interested in
participating or just hanging out with us, we're asking folks to come by
between 10am and 5pm. We will be located on the beach side of the park at a
group pavilion. Call us on 146.520 MHz simplex if you would like to reach out
to us while in the park for directions. If you can't reach us or don't have a
2m radio, you can call me directly at my cell number below.
Galveston Island is a wonderful location, and with the beach side of the park
having been very recently opened up after extensive renovations, it's really
beautiful and spacious. Being right on the coast it is a fantastic location to
make DX contacts all across South America and even Europe. I've had some great
contacts at this park on single-sideband (SSB) including: New Zealand, Panama,
Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Northern Ireland, England, Italy,
France, Belgium, Spain, Venezuela, Portugal, Germany, El Salvador, and
Suriname. Please come out and join us! We'll have some food and definitely some
coffee, and quite possibly some of the many generous snacks that are often
brought out by our wonderful members.
These BVARC POTA events have been a huge success, and I want to thank everyone
who has participated thus far. It's been an excellent opportunity to get our
members on the air, encourage them to get their General licenses, and introduce
ham radio to the general public and Boy Scouts. With that said, Anthony and I
are looking for a little help to handle setup, greeting our visitors and
explaining the radios and antennas, and of course helping our guests get on the
air. You don't have to know it all already, but if you're interested in helping
please come out and let us know so we can train you.
Some important details:
   - Park access is $5 per person, but is FREE IF you have a Texas State Park
Pass. Ask for a day use area pass. More info on: tpwd.texas.gov
   - We will have at least 4 HF radios (40m, 20m, 15m, 10m, and possibly 17m or
80m) that you can use if you don't have your own. So all you need to bring is
yourself, some water, and maybe some snacks.
   - If you'd like to bring your own radio, we have a few antennas you can use
(or you can set up yours) and the appropriate filters. But again, you don't
need to bring any equipment.
   - Technician class licensees ARE WELCOME! You CAN operate the stations on
ALL HF bands that are available and get POTA credit for contacts you make. You
will be required to use the club call sign (ask me or Anthony W5LIC for details
upon arrival).
   - If you're a Tech class license holder and would like to operate on 10m you
may do so under your own call sign if the station is open (the 10m band has
been wide-open lately).
   - Of course, you do not have to operate the radios. You can just come out
for a fun time with your fellow hams.
   - 10 contacts are all that are required to "activate" the park. You can log
with paper, or with any apps you prefer (we recommend the HAMRS App).
   - Sign up on the POTA.app website to upload your logs after the event.
Where:
Galveston Island State Park
14901 FM3005
Galveston, TX 77554

When:
Sunday March 26th 2023

If you've been curious about trying CW, FT8, or Winlink (VARA HF, 2m Packet
etc.) we will have those as optional modes you can try (more to come in the
future). As before, if you can't make this event, we will be doing this monthly
for the foreseeable future. It's a lot of fun, and we hope to see you out there
Sunday or any other time we're out at the parks. Contact me or Anthony (W5LIC)
if you have any questions about this event.
Thanks and 73!
