[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit with a very straight bill

2010-10-27 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Among the snipe, pipits and many shorebirds at Montezuma yesterday was a godwit
in
adult winter plumage. We had excellent looks and took a raft of photos that we
can
share with anyone interested. We had an ID problem with this bird as the bill
appeared absolutely straight much as one would see on a Black-tailed Godwit
(limosa
limosa).

The bi-color bill pattern was closer to Hudsonian (darker). While the bird was
very
actively moving and feeding, it took an age for it to show its underwing. At
that
point we went with Hudsonian due the narrow wingstipe on dark wing. The upper
tail
coverts were closer to the notch present on a Black-tailed and the bird seemed
overall larger than expected but the two are only a bit different in size.
Interesting drill but made for bleary eyes.

Does anyone know if the two have interbred?

Sorry Chris, not a single swallow at MNWR yesterday.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Wed. 10/27/10 CATTLE EGRETS

2010-10-27 Thread Tim Lenz
Hi all,

Indeed I was stunned to see 17 CATTLE EGRETS flying low over the inlet
directly towards me when all of a sudden they veered westward and circled up
high over the golf course. I ran back to my car and was able to take a few
photos before they disappeared out of view. I missed one bird in my initial
hasty attempt at a count but my photos clearly show 17 birds, which agrees
with Chris Dalton's count of the birds over E. Buffalo St.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egrets

2010-10-27 Thread david nicosia
A very unusual intense fall storm has been hitting the upper midwest
the last couple days. This storm set an all-time record low atmospheric
pressure reading for USA yesterday for a storm of non-tropical origin
(i.e excluding hurricanes). The barometer dropped
to a record low pressure reading of 28.20 inches or 955 mb in
northern Minnesota. This is a giant storm spanning from Canada
to the Gulf that gave us a few day period of pronounced south winds aloft.
It does not surprise me that vagrants are appearing from the south...i.e
CAVE SWALLOWS and now CATTLE EGRET. Who knows what else
is out there?

Anyway, I am uncertain about what kind of wind patterns
it takes to bring Old World species over to North America.
I would imagine it would be a prolonged east wind that extends
from Europe to North America. This rarely happens...especially
at higher altitudes. Interesting thought though...

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egrets

Hello all,

Given there are nearly 40+ CATTLE EGRETS (assuming the Ontario 14 are not
the same Inds as the Ithaca
16) in the northeast right now, and given this is an Old World species that
naturally colonized the States, I
wonder if these are birds coming from the Old World and not birds moving in
from southern States? Is
there a weird weather pattern going on across the Pond or to our south? I
guess the strong southern
winds could explain it.

cheers,
Matt

[cayugabirds-l] Mundy at lunch

2010-10-27 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,

After long time I took a walk around in Mundy wildflower Garden. As expected, I
did see a few Golden-crowned Kinglets with locals, but no Yellow-rumps. I was
glad to see some fall colors too, I thought I had missed it this year. A
monarch was heading southeast in this windy weather.

[cayugabirds-l] bluebirds

2010-10-27 Thread Susan Fast
While at work early this morning in Caroline, I heard a plethora of E.
BLUEBIRD call notes. Looking up, I counted about 125 of them, heading
south. Largest flock of bluebirds I've ever seen.

[cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret, Stewart Park and Treman

2010-10-27 Thread James G. Kohlenberg
While at Stewart Park, around 4:30, a Cattle Egret flew down the shore,
from the east, circled Treman Marina a few times before landing.
I drove over to the marina and found him perched on the docks just
north of the restroom building. Stuart Krasnoff joined me and took some
pictures. The Egret looked to be settling in for the night right in the center
of a flock of Ring-billed Gulls. If anyone was there before dawn they could
probably catch him still roosting.
I'm curious if all seventeen Egrets Tim and Chris saw are still around
Ithaca or just one.
