Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bard Prentiss local birder Obituary

2022-01-15 Thread James Gaffney
I have great respect for Bard and Gina. Really wonderful people. Bard was
inspirational in overcoming limitations with no complaints, just making his own
“adjustments “. Always upbeat Bird hard Bard I won’t forget.

[cayugabirds-l] A few observations from the west side of the lake today

2022-01-15 Thread Andrew David Miller
Errands took me up along the west side of the lake today and a few observations
of note (this was not really a birding trip, but the binoculars were in the car
and road trips go faster when I have my kids counting and looking for birds!).
The freezing fog rising off the lake in the early morning sun was a sight to
behold.

  * A flock of 500-700 snow geese was feeding in the corn stubble just south
of Hosmer Wineries on Rt. 89; the number may have been higher as more were
flying in as I left
  * One snowy owl was visible on the Finger Lakes Regional Aiport
  * 10 bald eagles seen including three bombing down the frozen channel of
Taughannock Creek where it goes under Rt. 89
  * Multiple norther harriers hunting the fields around the airport
  * Two roughlegged hawks (both dark phase) hunting near the airport as well
  * Lots of ducks on the lake in various spots, but I did not do a deep look
at them (definitively seen were common goldeneye, redhead, bufflehead, black
duck, mallard, scaup sp., common mergansers, and ring necked duck). I was a
little surprised to see three red-breasted mergansers as well (two male and one
female) in Varick near where 89 is close to the shore
  * Quite a number of mute swans on the lake in the Varick area

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bard Prentiss local birder Obituary

2022-01-15 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
His wife's obit was published separately right after Bard's.
He died 20 Nov. '21 & Gina died 8 Dec.21. Their obits can be found on
Dryden, NY Perkins Funeral Home page. Both Gina & Bard contributed much
to their professions, to peoples & projects around them & were very much
admired. For sure, Dryden & Ithaca benefited greatly because of her
desire to preserve history. How they ever found time in their busy lives
to be involved in so many activities & still have time to enjoy
gardening & flowers is a mystery to me.
My children knew Bard as a teacher when he taught at Dewitt in Ithaca &
then when he & they transferred to Dryden HS.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Not birds but.....

2022-01-15 Thread tess
Three options (at least):

(1) Peter's resource is great because it seems like at least initially,
the government will have kits on hand to send out.

(2) But /in addition/_,_ for those who can find at-home tests for sale,
anyone with health insurance /also/ can get 8 free tests/month.  So if
you are a family of 3, your family can get up to 24 tests every month
for free.  Each insurer will have it's own procedure so you may need to
go online to find out if you can just show your card at the pharmacy to
get them for free or if you will have to pay upfront and submit a claim
to be reimbursed.  Right now at-home testing kits are hard to find but
in a few weeks that should improve.

(3) If you want to be tested and can't find a kit, Tompkins & Cortland
County residents still can get free drive through testing by appointment
- more info here .  Others also may be
able to get free tests by appointment if there is a need (they have
symptoms, upcoming medical procedure, etc) or if their insurance or
employer has an agreement with CMC - info here
.

You can do any or all of these, choosing one doesn't mean you can't do
the others.

And Birding Content: 3 snowy owls close by the Martin Rd. pull off
yesterday afternoon, and roughly a zillion swans at the ice edge near
the south end of Lower Lake Rd (where it meets Rte 89, south of Cayuga
Lake SP).
