[cayugabirds-l] Immature Bald Eagle in Trumansburg (Schuyler County)

2022-11-04 Thread Annette Nadeau
Much to my surprise, an immature Bald Eagle just flew toward my home on
Rumsey Road, Trumansburg, from the east and flew very low over the field
across the road for several minutes. An adult Red-tailed Hawk harassed the
eagle until the eagle landed on the ground. The hawk then perched in a
nearby tree to keep an eye on the situation. There's a slight dip in the
field, which is where the eagle landed, so I can no longer see it.
The light from the setting sun was perfect for seeing field marks, and I
could easily see the enormous bill and that the talons were lowered in
flight. There may be an animal carcass in the field that the hawk and eagle
both want.
What a thrilling way to end a beautiful November day.

[cayugabirds-l] PEREGRINE FALCON

2022-03-25 Thread Annette Nadeau
I'm astounded that I just had a male PEREGRINE FALCON perched in a small
tree directly across the road from me! I watched it for several minutes as
it sat quietly. I was able to see it perfectly through my living room
window.
I've seen many of these birds up close as I used to help feed them when the
hawk barn was across the road from the old Lab of O building.
Before I wrote this message I checked my field guide to be absolutely
certain (even though there wasn't a doubt in my mind).
I live about six miles from Taughannock and am wondering if it could be
from that area. What a thrilling addition to my yard list!!!

While waiting in traffic this morning on Old Taughannock Blvd., I was
watching gulls soaring overhead out my driver's side window when I realized
there were Loons much higher above the gulls, flying to the south. I was
only able to count four before I had to resume driving. A nice start to the

[cayugabirds-l] Brooktondale Nighthawk

2012-08-22 Thread Annette Nadeau
At about 6 o'clock this evening a single COMMON NIGHTHAWK flew over my yard
here in Brooktondale. It was flying in a southerly direction. I believe that's
new for my yard list!

Also this evening one of the GREEN HERONS and what appears to be a family of
WOOD DUCKS are on the pond,

[cayugabirds-l] Caspian Terns / Screech Owl

2012-08-13 Thread Annette Nadeau
On a walk around the pond at around noon here at Hospicare, I heard and then
saw two CASPIAN TERNS, an adult and a juvenile, both vocalizing. They were
circling higher and higher, calling, heading northward toward the lake.

Also, this past Saturday night at about 9 o'clock, a SCREECH OWL sang its
monotonic trill in my yard in Brooktondale.

At last it is really woodcock season in Mecklenburg. At least 4 individuals
were peenting and skydancing when I went out at 6 am, audible from every side
of our house. I heard them last evening in the rainy dusk, and they may have
continued all night under the bright moon. Anyone who lives in an open area
should go out at twilight and listen. (There were peepers calling from the
creek, too.)

I didn't post this yesterday because I couldn't bear to turn on my computer,

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Jays

2012-01-26 Thread Annette Nadeau
This morning Blue Jays seemed to be everywhere on Burns Road in Brooktondale.
For a few minutes, there were 19 BLUE JAYS perched at the very top of a tall
oak tree. Many were giving the same two-noted vocalization, along with a sound
reminiscent of a Crow's comb call but quieter and more rapid. They were also
joined by one Starling. I don't know what it was all about, but it was fun to
see and hear.

Yesterday while walking along Boiceville Road in Brooktondale I was treated to
an excellent view of a fairly low-flying RED-SHOULDERED HAWK circling over the

Also yesterday, at the Lindsay Parsons Biodiversity Preserve in West Danby, an
adult BALD EAGLE flew over, again slowly and circling higher and higher until
it was a dot in the sky. This bird was also headed north.
