[cayugabirds-l] Eagles on Salmon Creek

2021-08-16 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
Around 4:30 this afternoon I was walking along Salmon Creek about 300 yards
upstream of the Myers Rd bridge (the bridge by the entrance to Salt Point)
when an Osprey (no fish in talons) came flying hard up the creek, vocalizing
continuously and closely pursued by two adult Bald Eagles, also screeching.
The Osprey dodged through the trees at breakneck speed and disappeared
upstream; the Eagles settled in a tall cottonwood for a while then flew off
back downstream. The whole performance however was repeated ten minutes later:
again an Osprey, also without fish, flying- fleeing- upstream, two eagles in
pursuit. I’ve seen an eagle several times earlier this year down at the lake
and also flying over Ludlowville along the creek valley. This is the first
time I’ve seen two together. I’m wondering about their possible residency
somewhere in the neighborhood….

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker at Myers

2021-06-10 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
Stuart Krasnoff and I found one adult Red-headed Woodpecker around 12:30 today
calling and working on enlarging a hole about 50 ft up in a dead trunk of a
tree facing the private marina at Myers. Here’s my ebird report with some
photos and description of location, and with Stuart’s audio recording of calls.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point songs

2021-05-01 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
When Sandy Podulka and I arrived at Salt Point late morning today we were
greeted by a singing Orchard Oriole. Nice to have him back!

Also singing were a number of Yellow Warblers, Warbling Vireos, Yellow-Rumps, a
Redstart, Field and Song Sparrows, Goldfinches, Bluebirds, Tree and Barn
Swallows, RWBBs and Grackles, Robins and Cardinals, a House Wren, and a
Catbird chiming in with random irrelevant comments. Nice to hear all that song!!

There were 7 Caspian Terns on the point at Myers.

[cayugabirds-l] salt point White-crowned sparrow

2020-10-25 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
To Donna’s list for Salt Point today I can add, seen late in the afternoon, an
immature White-crowned Sparrow. The bird was with the flock of White-throated
sparrows, they moved to various areas of goldenrod and low shrubbery during an
hour’s observing. Lots of hyperactive feeding today- at least 4 Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, 8 or more Yellow-rumped Warblers. There was also a flock of 25 Cedar
Waxwings, both immatures and adults.

Today I did not find the Siskins, nor the N Parula. By the way, I put the
Parula, with four good photos, in a list I posted to ebird yesterday. This is
the first time I’ve posted photos there. Today that list of mine, with the
photos, is in "recent visits" on the Salt Point ebird page, but the Parula is
not in the overall sightings list. Can anyone tell me why it’s not being
shown?

[cayugabirds-l] Salt point Parula, etc.

2020-10-24 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
Late this afternoon I ran across a mixed foraging flock at Salt Point, with the
chicadees and nuthatches there was at least one Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and a
surprise- a N. Parula female. There were also several Yellow-rumps eating
poison ivy berries. These were all seen along the straight path from the rr
crossing to the lakeshore. A flock of a dozen Siskins also was present, flying
around to various perches.

[cayugabirds-l] Blackbird and Osprey gang up!

2020-07-01 Thread John Bowdoin Greenly
Speaking of dive-bombing, I’ve had an interesting time the last few days. I’ve
been going down to Salt Point in the evening for a walk. When I get to the end
of the long straight path and turn to walk past the Osprey nest pole, for
several days in a row now, a RW Blackbird has started scolding me and then
flying circles about 10 ft above my head. Today the female came out of the
tall weeds by the path, where they must have their nest, and buzzed me, too.
This is all very well, and today there was just the right breeze so that the
male could fly into it and hold his place right above my head, so this went on
for a while. Then things got more serious. The male Osprey suddenly took off
from his nest and dive-bombed me repeatedly, diving straight at me, pulling up,
climbing about 50 ft, turning and diving again, about ten times. This was
rather intimidating, seeing the yellow irises of those Osprey eyes heading
straight at me and veering away at the last second.

People are walking by there all the time and the Ospreys clearly don’t perceive
them to be a threat, so it was certainly a response to the Blackbird’s activity
that prompted the Osprey to treat me as a danger. Of course, multi-species
mobbing of predators is common enough among small birds, but I’ve not
previously seen a large raptor join in.

The other odd thing is that yesterday after his overhead display I retreated
from the Blackbird, watched for a while from a distance as several other people
walked by the same spot, and he didn’t bother to fly out over any of them.
Then I walked back by and he flew out again! It seems that he just doesn’t
like me. Maybe it’s like Kevin and his Crow enemies. I should go back
tomorrow with a different hat on and see what happens.
