[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull at Cayuga Lake State Park

2021-12-01 Thread Sandy Podulka
My daughter, Lisa, spotted a Glaucous Gull from the boat launch at
Cayuga Lake State Park this afternoon (2nd winter, we think), in a
huge flock that included many Ring-billed Gulls and Herring Gulls,
and a few Great Black-backed Gulls, and one that looked like a Lesser
Black-backed (but remained tucked and far out on the water).

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull

2021-02-07 Thread Matthew Medler
Hi All,

For those interested in Seneca Lake and Schuyler County birding, there is a
nice flock of gulls at Clute Park in Watkins Glen that contains an adult
Glaucous Gull and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. These two species are both
infrequently reported here in Schuyler County.

Good birding,
Matt Medler

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous gull at Stewart Park

2020-03-22 Thread Paul Anderson
The birding at Stewart Park this morning was enormously satisfying. It was
chilly but beautifully clear, and very still. Among the usual suspects were a
Glaucous Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Bonaparte's Gulls, Red-breasted
Mergansers, Ruddy Ducks, Green-winged Teal. And I got my FOY Tree Swallow. See
ebird for the full list.

Then in Renwick Woods, the crows alerted me to the resident Great-horned Owl.

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull, Red-throated Loon

2017-12-24 Thread Dave Nutter
This morning from the lakeshore of Allan H Treman State Marine Park I saw a
juvenile RED-THROATED LOON on Cayuga Lake somewhere between the piling cluster
and East Shore Park or a bit farther north.
On the red lighthouse breakwater a juvenile GLAUCOUS GULL was resting along the
east edge near the second light post from the south. It appeared rather dusky
gray on the back, rump, tail, and undertail coverts, but cream above with a
fine pattern of light brown. The dark eye appears small and outlined in white.
The wingtips are plain white. The bill is huge, straight, and pink with a black
tip. The bird is far larger than the nearby Herring Gulls, but it may be
inconspicuous tucked down in a dip in the similar colored concrete of the
breakwater.
Duck diversity was a bit down.

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull and hybrid at compost

2016-02-20 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
Finally, I had an interesting gull at the compost in 2016. I've done 13 crow
censuses out there this year, and have had lots of Herring and Great
Black-backed gulls, but only a few individual Ring-billed Gulls and a 1cy
Lesser Black-backed Gull to add to that. Today I had an adult GLAUCOUS GULL,
first loafing in the field above the piles, then actively feeding on the piles.
It's probably the same bird that I've seen at Stewart Park, and the same one
that Jay saw at the compost in January. But, it's my first white-winged gull at
the compost in 2016.

I also had what I believe to be a so-called "Nelson's Gull," a hybrid of
Herring and Glaucous gull. It was a 2nd or 3rd cycle bird. Big, flat head,
sharply bicolored bill. It had some mantle feathers coming in, which were
whiter than surrounding Herring Gulls. Wing tips were dark but silverish with
pale edges. Again lighter then nearby Herring Gulls. There are always Herring
Gulls around that are very similar, including the non-black wingtips, but this
one had mostly white tertials and greater secondary coverts that looked
different. I found several 1st or 2nd cycle Herrings with similar coverts, but
not the whole Glaucousy package.

Perhaps the coolest birds were the two immature BALD EAGLES that terrorized the
compost crowd for a while. Both eagles were flying over at same time. Both very
white in body and wings, one with a darker head. They were distinguishable, but
they looked so much alike one wonders if they are siblings traveling together.
We still have so much to learn about animal movements and associations!

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous gull (was) at Stevenson road field

2015-04-07 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

I went to look for Repolls and I did see them. Then I went to Mt Pleasant where
I saw a single Turkey with a long hanging beard. On the way back to BTI, I
drove through Stevenson road and in the fields there were lots of gulls. So I
stopped to scan them. And there it was beautiful white plumaged Glaucous Gull!
I am seeing one after a long time. All the birds took off at one point and the
Glaucous flew into the compost piles while some other returned to the field.

Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull in Waterloo

2015-01-16 Thread M Miller
Just wanted to clarify that I was referring to the lock in Waterloo, along
route 96 in the Village. There is also a viewing platform on the east end of
Oak Island, the picnic/boat launch area at the south end of Oak St (next to the
Community Center). To get to Oak St, head west on 5 & 20 from the downtown
route 96 intersection for 2 blocks and turn left (south) onto Oak St. The
street is only 1 block long and ends at Oak Island. The Glaucous Gull was in
with a mixed group of about 20-30 RB, Herring, GBB gulls. Photos can be seen at
Eaton Birding Society fb page.

From north of Treman Marina the immature Glaucous Gull was still visible on the ice east of the white lighthouse until 5:27pm when it flew north along with other gulls. [cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull, Stewart Park

2012-03-08 Thread Dave Nutter
About 3:30pm today (8 March), just as I was starting a class with home-schoolers at Stewart Park, I found a beautiful all-white immature GLAUCOUS GULL in the very shallow lake water near shore where the usual 3 gull species were resting. Shortly afterward all the gulls took flight for unknown reasons, and after they resettled I did not see it again. Not all the kids had even arrived, and only a few got to see it through my scope, but still it was pretty cool to show them an obviously different gull and explain how it was so uncommon here. After my class broke up I met Jeff Gerbracht scanning through the gulls: no Glaucous, but he did find a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull

2012-01-31 Thread Jay McGowan
A first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL is currently in the gull flock on the ice off
the center of Stewart Park. A 3rd-cycle Lesser Black-backed was reported
two days ago, but I have not seen it.

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull, Stewart Park

2012-01-14 Thread Dave Nutter
At Stewart Park this afternoon about 2:15pm I found a monstrous white immature GLAUCOUS GULL on the ice, the only unusual bird I could pick out among the RING-BILLED, HERRING, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS. It was alternately resting and bullying the Herring Gulls. I also traipsed around in Fuertes Sanctuary with Ann Mitchell and Gary Kohlenberg and eventually found a GREAT HORNED OWL perched in a nook high in a tree. I'm not sure if the hollowed out space is big enough for nesting, which ought to be happening about now, but we saw no nest.In the morning I was among several people who went to Stewart Park, East Shore, Myers, and Elaina's searching for Chris & Jessie's Black-legged Kittiwake without definitive success, so far as I've heard. Thank-you, Tim Lenz, for posting to Cayugabirds-L early. I will work on recreating a text-message rare bird alert system. We did see several BONAPARTE'S GULLS around the south end of Cayuga Lake and several AMERICAN PIPITS at Myers Point and along the lakeshore of Treman Marine Park. Bob McGuire and I also saw the BROKEN-BILLED COMMON LOON at Ladoga.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull & Red-breasted Mergansers East Shore Park (Ithaca)

2011-01-18 Thread Elaina McCartney
Light continues to be very good for viewing, also from the SW corner of the
west shore, and probably from the tip of Treman Park. The ice edge is further
out today. There remains a large gathering of waterfowl just to the west of
the red lighthouse jetty, and that was probably visible to Chris et al. from
the East Shore, although they might not be visible from Stewart Park because of
being blocked by the jetty itself.

I have had a Golden-crowned Kinglet coming regularly just outside my window to
pick up suet crumbs dropped by the woodpeckers. Today a second Kinglet showed
up (simultaneously) that had a more orange crown. The regular bird may be a
female, or I suppose it could be a "pale male".

A Great Blue Heron flew over about an hour ago, moving from NE to SW.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull & Red-breasted Mergansers East Shore
Park (Ithaca)

Location: East Shore Park
Observation date: 1/18/11
Notes: A lunchtime stop to check for ducks and gulls. Highlights included a
GLAUCOUS GULL and two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS. OBSERVERS: Chris Wood, Jeff
Gerbracht, Tim Lenz and Nate Senner. WEATHER: Unusually warm and EXCELLENT
viewing conditions without a trace of heat waves. This made if easy to see and
identify birds even on the far side of the lake. Overcast with 15% blue sky.

34 °F (1 °C)
Humidity: 79 %
Wind Speed: S 7 MPH
Barometer: 29.79" (1010.0 mb)
Dewpoint: 28 °F (-2 °C)
Wind Chill:28 °F (-2 °C)
Visibility:10.00 mi. (no heat waves; beautiful!!)
Number of species: 18

Canada Goose 2400 Most birds on far shore. Very rough estimate by 100s.
Tundra Swan 3 **Uncommon in winter (continuing birds off of Stewart
Park).
Gadwall 9 Five on the close shore and 4 on the far shore.
American Black Duck 22 There may have been more tucked into the tight
concentration of Mallards on the far shore.
American Black Duck x Mallard (hybrid) 1 May have been more
hybrids--distance made ID a bit challenging.
Mallard 275 Estimated by groups of 25.
Canvasback 220 Estimated by 5s. All birds on far shore, mostly
northwest of Hog Hole. Numbers are certainly growing in the last week.
Redhead 4000 Very rough count. Nate counted ca. 1000 on this shore and
it seemed that there were well over 3000 on the far shore. Given the very poor
attempts at counting, am keeping with a very conservative 4000. Numbers are
certainly growing in the last week.
Greater Scaup 1 Only one seen, but many birds distant on far shore and
densely packed flocks of Redhead made seeing scaup challenging.
Lesser Scaup 35 All but one distant on far shore and densely packed
flocks of Redhead made seeing scaup challenging.
Common Goldeneye 75
Common Merganser 95 Counted by 5s with scope.
Red-breasted Merganser 2 Two adult males swimming near each other on
the middle/far side of the lake.
Red-tailed Hawk 1 Adult off Stewart Park.
Ring-billed Gull 20
Herring Gull (American) 130
Glaucous Gull 1 *Uncommon. Jeff first found this bird in flight over
the middle of the lake, almost straight out from East Shore. Landed on lake
where we all had scope views. Seemed to be a second-cycle bird with a couple
grayish feathers on scapulars and plainer wing coverts, but bird was fairly
distant and could have simply been a less well-marked first-cycle.
Great Black-backed Gull 43
American Crow 5

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull - Dryden

2010-03-01 Thread Tom Johnson
Cayugabirders,
A "new" Glaucous Gull (1st cycle) was at the Stevenson Rd. compost
piles in Dryden today. Aside from a few hundred Redhead in the
southeast corner of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca and 2 Snow Geese at Myers
Point in Lansing, things were pretty quiet.
Cheers,
Tom

[cayugabirds-l] glaucous gull

2010-02-12 Thread Dave Nutter
A /The immature white GLAUCOUS GULL was on Cayuga Lake
this morning (Fri 12 Feb) north of the cluster of pilings and visible
in the shimmer scoping from East Shore Park and Stewart Park,
but presumably easier to see from Treman Marine Park or the west shore.

[cayugabirds-l] Glaucous Gull

2010-01-15 Thread bob mcguire
There was a single GLAUCOUS GULL on the ice edge in the SE corner of
the lake among the black-backed, Herring, and Ring-billed Gulls. Until
an ice fisherman arrived at 8:30 and chased them away.

The two Long-tailed Ducks were also visible from the marina.
