[cayugabirds-l] bobolinks

2021-05-05 Thread Marty Schlabach
We had several bobolinks as yard birds this morning. I believe that's a first
for our yard bird list. I heard their song and assumed at first that it was
our resident mockingbird. But, wanting to confirm it, we saw at least 3
bobolinks.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks

2020-06-29 Thread Wesley M. Hochachka
I have a small amount of first-hand experience of searching for Bobolink nests
during a study of the effects of habitat fragmentation on nesting success. My
impression is that Bobolink nests can be extremely difficult to find, and I
would discourage attempts to find a Bobolink nest for the purpose of casual
observation. Adult Bobolinks have several behaviors that make nest finding
difficult, including:

  * Male activity is only loosely associated with nest locations. A male can
be activity singing in one area, actively foraging in another, and with their
nest in yet another area entirely, within an overall area of several acres.
  * Female Bobolinks can walk for tens of yards, both to and from their
nests, making the location at which a female lands only a loose indicator of
where her nest actually is.
  * Localizing a nest is potentially best done by flushing a female from her
nest (so that she has no time to walk away before taking flight). Flushing
birds of their nests is a standard methodology for grassland bird researchers,
using a rope dragged through the grass between two people walking parallel
lines.

In summary, just finding a Bobolink nest can take a substantial amount of time
(hours), and cause major damage to habitat in the general vicinity of a nest
(and potentially result in destruction of the nest). Personally, I think that
the potential costs to attempting to find a nest would on average outweigh any
benefits. Having written that, the nests of some individual birds are much
easier to find than would be typical for a species, although I cannot think of
any way to predict from birds’ behavior when a nest could be easily found
(except maybe when the nestlings are so old and loud that they would be
fledging imminently).

For almost 10 days, there has been a male Bobolink in a meadow in front of my

vocalizations usually get a busy response. I have yet to see or ID a female or
young. The grass is tall and quite dense so maybe this will be the secret to
their successful brood. Has anyone had experience observing nestlings? Can
anyone suggest some good resources about their behavior?

RE: [cayugabirds-l] bobolinks and yellowthroat/mowing

2019-05-03 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Hi Eric,

The Cornell U. Cooperative Extension publication entitled Hayfield Management
and Grassland Bird Conservation by Jim Ochterski (CCE of Schuler County;
ja...@cornell.edu<mailto:ja...@cornell.edu>) says this on page 2:

“To be considered good habitat for grassland birds, a grass hayfield needs to
remain substantially unmown through the breeding season, which begins in early
May and ends by mid-July across most of New York State. During this time
hayfields grow vigorously, providing shelter, nesting areas among the grass
stems, and a source of insects that comprise bird diets. Any significant
disturbance, like mowing or manure application, will cause most nest to fail.
Alfalfa hay stands are generally unsuitable for grassland birds.

In New York, breeding grassland birds will begin identifying territories from
late April through May. Nest building and egg laying occur through early June
and young birds tend to hatch by mid to late June. The ability to fly for cover
and feeding(called ‘fledging’ ) develops by early July.”

The article has a calendar which shows the dates May 14 thru July 22 as times
when MOWING DETRIMENTAL to grassland birds.

For a few reasons, including the weather, we have more unplowed and unmowed and
ungrazed fields this year around the house giving us quite a few chattering

are more than our usual one or two that just pass through. They move so quickly

[cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks, Meadowlarks, Goshawk, White thorated sparrows etc.

2012-06-25 Thread Meena Haribal
I spent my week-end at various locations on my quest for odonates. Saturday in
Finger lakes national Forest and Sunday in McIlroy preserve and Summer Hill and
returned via Caswell Road.

Birds of note were as follows;

EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. In FLNF region at least 6 of them. On the way to Summer
hill along the Salt road and at various locations saw another dozens or so.
Many were on the wires and singing. Caswell road I saw another four Meadowlarks.

Similarly, saw numerous EASTERN KINGBIRDS on wires all along the fields of Salt
Road and Lick Street.

BOBOLINKS were seen in small groups (there were more than one breeding males in
each group). On the junction of Salt and Fillmore Roads, there were 8 of them
very close to road and were making a racket. Another dozen or so in FLNF
grasslands. I think Caswell road had the highest concentrations of Bobolinks.
Total of about 30+ were seen between West-Dryden road and Upper Creek road on
seasonal part of the Caswell road.

In Summer Hill today, I heard a NORTHERN GOSHAWK at the intersection of Salt
and Hoag Road. There was also a WINTER WREN singing. On Lick Street I heard two
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS singing and at the same location there was also a pair
of YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS going crazy with their mewing sounds and drumming.
And there were many other species, including several species of warblers
(Ovenbirds, Chestnut-sided, Yellow, Yellow-rump, Common-yellowthroat, Pine
Warbler), and Veery, Hermit and Wood thrushes, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted
grosbeaks and many Indigo Buntings, Baltimore Oriole etc.

Last week on Seaberg road of FLNF, I heard a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW singing from a
grassland opposite Ballard pond.

I keep wondering when FLNF, Robinson Hollow, Connecticut and Summer Hills are
less than 20 miles from Ithaca, with lot more to see and hear, why everyone
keeps driving all the way to MNWR. FLNF is wonderful place to spend the day.
Such a nice post of observation from Sue Gregoire in FLNF on Am. woodcocks.

On Caswell Road, I also had lots of butterflies especially Baltimore
Checkerspots, I estimated more than 300+ along the road as usual!

Summer is wonderful!

[cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks Woodcocks

2012-05-23 Thread Jacalyn C Spoon
The Bobolinks and Woodcocks are singing up a storm in my back yard.
Fireflies have just started.
If you'd like to listen just send me a quick message before tromping through
the back yard.
Feel free to park in the driveway but don't block anyone else.
And, avoid the electric fences.

[cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks

2012-05-10 Thread Donna Scott
Saw about 7 male Bobolinks and 3 females flying and landing in meadow grasses
near picturesque old gray barn across from the Long Point Winery, on the
southeast end of Lake Road where it joins NYS Rt. 90. Lake Rd. leads down to
Long Point State Park on Cayuga Lake.

Before the above sighting, I saw one male Bobolink being chased by a couple Red
Winged Blackbirds in a smaller meadow east of the part of Lake Rd. that runs
parallel to the lake cliff, to the south of LP St. Park.

Does anybody know when the farmer in these areas mows the fields?

[cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks in my backyard

2010-05-21 Thread Jacalyn C. Spoon
My backyard has a bounty of Bobolinks if anyone has a desire to see and hear
them this season write me.

I also found a Redwing Black Bird nest last night while putting up fence posts.
They were none too happy that I was so near but they are also lucky I didn't
knock it over.

Just the highlights here,
Jacie
