Yes, that’s a yearling male, one hatched in 2020. They molt out of the

Hi Matt,

Yes, I think that is very likely, and I probably mis-id'ed this bird. I did
not note the bold markings typical of the female R-b Grosbeak. In my haste
to pin it down I eliminated the House FInch and completely lapsed on the
Purple Finch.

Is there any chance that the bird you saw this morning might have been a

That's right: Miller Creek joins Michigan Creek 1/2 mile south of the Spencer
Lake dam. The combined waters are afterwards named Catatonk Creek on USGS maps.
It flows south and east, gathering other waters, until it joins with Owego
Creek and empties into the Susquehanna.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rose-breasted Grosbeak

2017-04-02 Thread Dave Nutter
Very cool bird! As far as I can tell, Miller Creek drains south, and South
Danby Road is outside the Cayuga Lake Basin. It's exciting to hear what birds
are just beyond and contemplating migrating beyond the next set of hills or
through the next saddle as they make their way north.

*Finally!*

A resplendent male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK visited my Wood Road in
Freeville feeder today! I put out the grey-striped sunflower seeds in
the nick of time!

Still having PINE SISKINS visit and today also a lovely WHITE-CROWNED

After Marie posted about having a hummingbird visit, I mixed up some
nectar with the last
of the sugar in the house.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rose Breasted Grosbeak

2014-04-30 Thread Dave Nutter
Michele (& all),
The small streams on either side of Speed Hill Rd both feed the West Branch of
Oswego Creek which goes south to the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay,
so Speed Hill Rd is out of the basin, at least mostly. (It seems that there's
really great birding just outside the line lots of places!) The divide is just
a short distance west of Speed Hill Rd on NYS-79 but closer on upper Buffalo
Rd. Around the top of Bailor Rd where it crosses Buffalo Rd and meets Speed
Hill Rd my map isn't precise enough, and I just don't know. You'll have to pour
water on the ground there and see which way it goes. If that's where you are,
and the land slopes down all the way across Buffalo Rd, then you're in.

Until I hear otherwise I'm tentatively assigning the first 2014 CLB record
Rose-breasted Grosbeak to Marilyn Ray on Besemer Rd on Sunday the 27th. Other
basin reports from Sunday can share the record, while reports from previous
days can preempt and take over the record. Everyone else who saw the species
some other place or time earns my total envy at seeing a really cool bird. I
can't wait!

The first basin records list, which I try to keep up to date, is here:
http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/cayuga-lake-basin-first-records
Please let me know of any errors, additions, or preemptions.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Brooktondale

2011-04-24 Thread Susan Fast
I took a walk thru Shindagin Hollow early this morning. The grosbeak got by
me; I missed it; no excuses. Otherwise, birds were what I would have
expected. Only 1 WINTER WREN, however. I did find 2 unusuals: a female
cardinal (I just don't find them down in there), and a YELLOW-BELLLIED
SAPSUCKER still in juvenile plumage. Very late for this, and I didn't know
what it was until I saw the side stripe.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Brooktondale

Looked out my kitchen window just now and was startled to see a brilliantly
colored ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on a nearby branch.

There are a lot of great birds in Shindagin Hollow, but it's outside the Cayuga Lake Basin, so I'm still seeking a 2011 first basin record for Rose-breasted Grosbeak.  Of course I'm also interested in any neat bird observations in the region!--Dave NutterOn Apr 24, 2011, at 05:47 AM, Melissa Groo wrote:
