[cayugabirds-l] 6 wild turkeys at our bird feeder Friday afternoon, West Danby
We had 6 wild turkeys at our birder feed this afternoon ~13:15. They hung around for about 30 minutes enjoying the mixed and sunflower seeds in a tray we use for ground feeding. As well as scratching around for dropped seed. I got some photos of them. Later that afternoon I saw their tracks in our front field when I went X-C skiing. I guess it's ok to call them late for dinner. grin Nigel near the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve, West Danby, NYhttp://www.fllt.org/preserves/lindsay-parsons-biodiversity-preserve/ -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --
[cayugabirds-l] West Danby, Turkey hen is now a feeder bird
We have a Turkey hen that has decided to become a feeder bird at our feeder in West Danby, just north of Geo Kloppel on Tupper Rd. We put a tray down with mixed seed and sunflower seed - for the squirrels, doves, other birds that want to ground feed. We first saw her on Wed 11/28, then Thrs 11/29 - reported both times to eBird. Since then we have seen her at least once a day at different times - I have not reported this to eBird after 11/29. Today it was interesting to see a squirrel defending the tray against her. So she found other dropped seeds, good stuff in the wood chip and grass mulch around the feeders. On the Friday just after Thanksgiving, 11/23, we had a flock of 6 turkeys stop by, reported on eBird, but we haven't seen them since. Don't call them "late for dinner." grin Nigel near the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve, West Danby, NYhttp://www.fllt.org/preserves/lindsay-parsons-biodiversity-preserve/ -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --

Glenn, Yes, Contact the ECO. The ECO, Rangers, are also State Police, so give them the information about inaction by local LEO, Law Enforcement Officer. Nigel (Ranger Joan Oldrodyd on BCC - Tioga, Tompkins Cty) For example: our vol fire department spent several hours putting out a trash burn. The Tompkins County Sheriff who showed up didn't even know that trash burning was illegal - so our Chief had to educate them about this law. DEC Region 7 Offices - New York State Department of Environmental https://www.dec.ny.gov/about/615.html Central Dispatch for rescues, they should also be able to reach the ECO in your area. In the case of a wildland rescue/lost person call both local 911 then Forest Ranger Emergency Contact: 518-408-5850 518-891-0235 (Adirondacks) https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/press.html - for Ranger and ECO activities. > On 2019-07-20 21:40, Glenn Wilson wrote: >> My neighbor shot and wounded a downy off our feeders. The RWB are about 1 month early - they used to show up mid to late March. We had at least 6 Monday afternoon. [cayugabirds-l] FYI, crow with a white wing band (?) N of Spencer
I have seen a lot of crows around but this was the first I saw one with what might be a tag outside of Ithaca. I was heading into Spencer this morning just north of the turn onto Fisher Settlement Rd, ~08:30. There was a crow flying off the road to the left, Northeast, with what appeared to be a white rectangle on its left wing. There might also have been a white rectangular mark on the left side of the body. Nigel

[cayugabirds-l] We had a Redwing Blackbird on Fri 2/15 in West Danby
Here just north of Lindsay Parsons in West Danby we had our first Redwing Blackbird on Fri 2/15. This is probably a month earlier than I have seen one before in the past. I try to capture some quick photos as a record each year. Also the Redpolls are causing a giant sucking sound on our thistle and sunflower feeders. Like at least an est 1.5 to 2 kg of seed per day. I have to fill the feeders twice a day now. Even in the spring the flocks of Gold Finches would take several days to lower the large tube thistle feeder by 2/3rds. The Redpolls do this in a day along with a similar effect on the sunflower seed feeders. And they pretty much empty the small metal thistle seed feeder in half a day - they literally cover every inch of this feeder when feeding. Plus it sounds like "The Birds" in the morning. [cayugabirds-l] OT? FYO bear nr West Danby
This morning we got up and noticed that our bird feeders were on the ground. Upon closer inspection I found that the 4 hook rod was bent almost flat to the ground - I should have gotten a picture before straightening it. The stand-alone wooden box feeder had the plastic hinge for the lid torn and the suet block on that feeder had fallen out and had chew marks all around. So we are taking the bird feeders down tonight. We are just north of VanBuskirk Gulf Rd and west of NY Rt 34/96. Our home designed deer fence doesn't seem to be damaged - it must be strong enough for the bear to climb. (4 ft field fence wire 2 runs high - cable tied together; heavy duty road sign U posts from Seneca Supply - 10 ft so 8 ft exposed, but next time I would use 12 ft; rebar woven through the wire at 16 ft intervals between the U posts; As grape vines grow on the fence scraps of wood or tree branches are added for bracing the wire.) Dave, I reported to eBird on Sun 12/31 a Red-Winged Blackbird male at ~10:45 am hanging around our bird feed. I also attached a photo to the report. [cayugabirds-l] our birds are picky, only Sunflower seeds for them
Some folks on CAYUGABIRDS-L fill their feeders with different seeds - Sunflower, Niger, etc. We have tried this in the past with Sunflower and Niger seed feeds. Even the Goldfinches barely touched our Niger seed. It was "fresh" from Agway, stored in the fridge until put out. Forget about the mixes with Milo and Corn. So now we just put out Sunflower seed, spread some seed on trays on the ground. Last winter we had a Mourning Dove that figured out how to land on our rectangular metal feeder. Which was quite entertaining to watch. Since this feeder has a squirrel baffle on the post, we have used a stick to fix the movable perch in place.
