student bursary deadline ends this SUNDAY!
Importance: High

Dear all,

Registration is open for the 2024 CCP4 study weekend entitled "Decision making
in MX - how to be a productive structural biologist".

Important Key Dates:
* Early bird registration final date: 19 November 2023;
* We have assisted places available for students registering during early bird
period i.e. now until 19 November - which cover the cost of registration plus
one night accommodation meaning students only pay for aqdditional nights
accommodation @ £63 per night;
* Registration for in-person delegates closes 4 December 2023 (or earlier if
in-person places sell out although you will be able to join the in-person
waitlist).

This year we are focusing on decision-making in macromolecular crystallography:
when to use what automated tool, how to interpret the output and when you need
to get your hands dirty instead. The frontiers of crystallography now involve
massive multi-crystal and multi-dimensional experiments. This means the more

sometimes they fail (but have maybe not told you exactly why or how). Sometimes
they don't even exist. In that case, how can you return to the basics and
develop new strategies to break down the barriers to publication?

Once again, this year the CCP4 Study Weekend will be held as a hybrid event
from the 3rd to 5th January 2024, enabling people to choose whether to attend
in-person or virtually. The in-person event will be held at the East Midlands
Conference Centre, Nottingham, UK.

We would like to invite you to another iteration of the ever popular CCP4 Study
Weekend - to start the year 2024 with a lot of fresh ideas, new insights and
(hopefully) new friends and contacts to boost. As always it will be an eclectic
mix of bleeding-edge science, in-depth presentations, discussion panel,
poster-sessions, hands-on tutorials and plenty of opportunities for social
interactions. For full details, programme, logistics and registration, please
visit the Study Weekend website<https://studyweekend.ccp4.ac.uk/>.

the costs of attending Study Weekend, in the form of a bursary. All students

exciting programme confirmed below. Early bird registration is open until 13th
November, more details of which can be found here:

With an exciting list of confirmed speakers, the event looks to be a great
conference, with a topic based around "Data: subtle details to big insights".
With a break from tradition, the Study Weekend will start with a keynote
lecture and discussion panel talking and engaging with the audience about data
sources and the future of structural biology. The subsequent 2 days will follow
the usual format with 3 sessions each day. Old favourites like "What's New in
CCP4?" and "Lunchtime Bytes" will also appear (see
programme<https://ccp4sw.org/programme/> for more details).
A poster session, with prizes, will be taking place this time on the evening of
the first day allowing students to present their research to the wider
crystallographic community. Student bursaries<https://ccp4sw.org/for-students/>
are available to cover the cost of registration and one night's accommodation.
Student registration needs to be received before 13th November to take
advantage of this.
In keeping with previous CCP4 meetings, the lectures will focus on the
presentation and discussion of advanced methods and techniques developed and
used by leaders in the field, whilst having a strong teaching element aimed at
students and early researchers.

Sessions and confirmed speakers are as follows:

Day 1
Diamond MX User Meeting
Session 1: Integrative structural biology
Linking structural biology data sources to tackle Alzheimer's - Monserrat
Soler-Lopez
Where do we see structural biology heading in the future? Discussion panel

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the next CCP4 Study Weekend in its 2020 edition
will be devoted to the single most synergic task in structural biology: model
building. Aside from covering the latest advances in both automated and manual
procedures, the meeting will offer sessions on related topics such as
refinement, validation and representation, with a focus on helping you produce
the best possible model from your experimental data. All sessions will have an
integrative character, presenting methods and approaches that may be
indistinctly used with X-ray crystallography, and electron cryo-microscopy or
diffraction.

This meeting will have a couple of innovations too - more announcements will
follow in due course. The most important ones will be posted here (as always),
but for more fluid news, speaker profiles and direct communication with the
organisers, please use hashtag #CCP4SW on Twitter or give us a follow (vide
infra).

As in recent editions, the event will be held at the East Midlands Conference
Centre in Nottingham, from the 7th to the 9th of January 2020. We are very much
looking forward to welcoming you in Nottingham. And yes, there will be a
Cèilidh
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cèilidh<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A8ilidh>).

[ccp4bb] Bursaries available for CCP4 Study Weekend 2020

2019-10-03 Thread Karen McIntyre - UKRI STFC
Standard Student Bursaries

As in year's past, CCP4 has made funding available for students, to help with
the costs of attending Study Weekend, in the form of a bursary. All students
are eligible for a standard bursary which covers registration plus one nights
accommodation in halls. Bursaries will be given out to all students registering
during the early bird registration period - 2nd September to 17th November 2019.

Students obtaining a standard bursary will only need to pay for any additional
night's accommodation.

Travel Bursaries

Limited funds will also be made available to help pay travel costs for students
and young post-docs from non-UK laboratories. Please send a separate letter,
signed by your supervisor and stating the expected cost of travel in pounds
sterling, to justify applications for travel support. Supervisors are asked to
nominate only one candidate from their Laboratory. Delegates are expected to
travel by the most economic means possible. Candidates from less favoured
regions will be given preference.

Applications should be sent to:

Georgia Lomas
CCP4 Study Weekend Travel Bursary
Science and Technology Facilities Council
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

Harwell Oxford
Didcot

You can also fax copies of your letters to Georgia on +44 (0)1235 567720 or

they will appear there, is there any estimate when this will happen?

The CCP4 Study Weekend on "Integrated, rational molecular replacement" will be

very soon, on 10th December.

We're pleased to announce a late addition to the programme, which couldn't be
publicised until the results of the CASP13 protein folding challenge had been
announced. As you may have heard (if you read tech websites or the Guardian
newspaper) the people from DeepMind have applied their deep learning algorithms
to the protein folding problem and have done extremely well in folding the
protein targets in CASP13. Andrew Senior, the lead of the AlphaFold team that

Wednesday 7 - MX User Meeting
Thursday 8 / Friday 9 - CCP4 Study Weekend

"Advances in Experimental Phasing"

We cordially invite you to participate in the 2015 CCP4 Study Weekend at the
the East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham. The annual CCP4
Study Weekend is a chance to shake off the post-New Year torpor, and work hard
and play hard with your fellow crystallographers. Once again, we have put
together an exciting scientific programme for the Thursday and Friday, either
side of the traditional conference dinner. Please also check out the satellite
meetings which may be of interest. The Study Weekend is a chance to catch up
with old friends, but is also a chance to meet the CCP4 staff who will be there
to present and demonstrate the latest software and to answer questions - please
say hello!

This year, the topic for the Study Weekend is "Advances in Experimental
Phasing". In keeping with previous CCP4 meetings, the lectures will focus on
the presentation and discussion of advanced methods and techniques developed
and used by the leaders in the field.

Further details of the program and the registration are at

What techniques can be combined with crystallographic analysis? Of all
deposited structures in the PDB, more than half are oligomeric, and three
quarters have a ligand bound. In-solution methods like SAXS or biophysical
techniques allow us to validate the information on the molecular assembly.
Biophysical techniques are also essential to probe ligands and co-factors. We
address how to make ligand complexes with novel methods to mount and manipulate
crystals. A session on drug design gives the perspective and discusses
additional techniques such as NMR. Simulations and NMR also address the dynamic
nature of macromolecules. EM techniques can be used to address macromolecular
complexes of changing composition and go full circle with the X-ray analysis.
You will learn how complementary methods help in structure determination and
analysis, leading to a better understanding of the bio-macromolecules we study.

The organisers.

Ivo Tews, University of Southampton

Jon Cooper, UCL.

quarters have a ligand bound.
