Dear Bob, Many thanks for posting this memory of Ward. It was such a sad shock to learn of his passing. Like many of the newsgroup readers I remember Ward as an outstanding colleague and program manager. It was my pleasure to talk with him regularly as my point of contact for Phenix and ALS-ENABLE funding. I will miss our calls and his sage advice and generous spirit. He will be greatly missed by many of us. I am deeply saddened to hear of Ward’s passing. He was a friend to many of us and a tremendous supporter of structural biology. I knew him since his time at Michigan. He championed the ways through applications of new innovations throughout the era of synchrotron technologies and increasing awareness of the possibilities they brought with them. As NIH program director he was always a source of insight and support for prospects and possibilities. It is very saddening to hear this news. It took me a couple of days to wrap my head around it and write. Thank you for this obituary Bob, which captures so eloquently the breadth of all of Ward's remarkable engagements and contributions. I interacted with him a few times over the course of the Protein Structure Initiative structural genomics programs at the BSGC and JCSG, and more recently over the last couple of years as part of current endeavors. His efforts contributed very significantly to everything I have been doing for the past 15 years too. It is a tremendous loss but a life very well lived with many important contributions to remember. Ward was the Program Official for all my grants! My life will not be the same without him. He was always so supportive and helpful with advice on how to navigate the sometimes convoluted system that is the NIH. Yes, this is of course a scam. My husband was almost duped by someone who wrote in the name of a close friend saying that he got mugged in Europe and to send money to return to USA. My husband of course was ready to send for his colleague but just gave a call to his friend to make this not a scam. Of course, it was a scam. Only last night we saved ourselves from another scam. I think it is good share with the group. My son (in high school) found a 2005 BMW X5 on an internet site. The car's blue book price is $26,000 but the asking price by the seller is $2775. Sounds too good to be true. But when my son (who dreams to own a BMW) contacted the owner (Amanda Stone), she replied him immediately saying her son died two months back in an automobile accident hit by a drunk driver while riding his fiancee's car. She simply wants to sell the car so that someone else can use it and she is not interested in making money. She said that she has a deal with e-bay and that the car will be shipped by e-bay to the buyer once the buyer pays the price that will be hold by e-bay. The buyer has 5 days to check the car out and if decides not to buy, the car will be shipped back to e-bay at seller's cost and buyer gets back his money. Dear Colleagues, I am very sorry to convey the news below. Durward W J Cruickshank FRS, Professor of Chemistry at UMIST (1967-1983; Emeritus thereafter), died on Friday July 13th at Alderley Edge, near Manchester, aged 83. There will be a private family funeral this week. A memorial service will be held at a later date, details to follow.
