When I bought my TRS80 ($400, instead of $600, by buying without the

RCA jack, to use instead of the 5-pin DIN. I upgraded the RAM and ROM, added
another key (Michael Shrayer's "Electric Pencil" needed a Control key), added
Joe Garner's add-in board for reverse video and lower case, switched to a
tri-state LED, and put Riv-Nuts in the base, so that the CPU and Expansion
Interface were bolted to a thin piece of plywood. When the exterior paint
was getting worn, I repainted it blue. Dave Sparks, the RS repair
technician, was happy to ignore any mods that he understood, so he didn't
void the warranty. When his boss objected, he said that since I had brought
it in with an intact warranty label and paint on the screws, he assumed that
I had done all of the mods through the vent slots, without opening it ("boat

Fun fact - the "Warranty Void if Removed" tags were and are illegal. The
warranty can only be voided if the mfgr can prove the thing you did
resulted in the problem you're claiming warranty on. :)

It's certainly priced as if they think it's the "best solution". But it's
also closed-source, driven by a weird GUI tool, and unavailable for at least
six months. Charging a whopping $70 for shipping and tossing it into the
regular international mail is just icing. So it's not even close to my idea
of "best" on any of those fronts, but hey, whatever works for you.

I would love to see your equivalent hardware, hand soldered by you, and
included a software package that's light years ahead of anything currently
available in open or closed source. Follow that up by shipping it at a
loss because who cares how much it costs to ship something from Hawaii to
the UK, as long as some rando on the internet is satisfied.

Go ahead. I'll sit here, eaglerly awaiting your results.

My objection to such a thing being closed-source isn't just ideological. If
I am trying to read a disk which has an unrecognised format or is so mangled
that the software throws up its arms, I'm completely out of luck adding
support to it myself.

It's purely ideological. Otherwise, you would have asked the developer
what it takes to add new formats to the software. You could have also
gone to the Documentation page and discovered that the ability to create
new formats for both hard & soft sectored media is built in. Here's the
link to the Hard Sectored format documentation to get you started:
https://wiki.applesaucefdc.com/doku.php?id=adv:hardsectorconf

If you have no idea what format the disk is in, you can create an A2R flux
image of it and send it to John(author) - he loves puzzles like that.

Their response to Linux and Windows users is basically "run our software on
a pirate copy of MacOS in a VM". Yes, users of disk imaging tools are
unlikely to care much about violating copyright, but it's probably best to
not say the quiet part out loud here.

Oh ffs. No, "their" response is typically, "you can buy a used Mac Mini
off of eBay for under $200 and use that" and if you can't afford that,
THEN you can set up a VM. You can get a suitable Mac Mini via this link
for $150, free shipping and a 3 year warranty:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/144642477287 If you don't have an HDMI monitor or
USB keyboard, I suspect eBay can help there too.

Hopefully the statement at the end of the About page on the AppleSauce
site will get you to stop the "but closed source!" pearl clutching.

"Applesauce is not an open source project, and there are some wild stories
about why that is. But there are 3 independent people that have full
access to the repository containing every scrap of source code and
hardware projects about Applesauce. These people have been instructed to
release everything into the public domain in the case of anything
happening to me, or me getting bored and walking away from the project. It
is important to me that people understand that even though it isn’t
currently open source, there will never be a situation in which they will
get stuck with hardware that is no longer supported or supportable. All of
the file formats and such have already been fully documented and released
into the public domain. I have also released documentation for the entire
communication protocol between the client and hardware so that people can
write their own software.

No silly licensing rules! No special institutional rules, expenses, or
overreaching requirements. You are buying a tool from us. What you do with
it is your business.

The client software is the most powerful disk analysis software available
and is frequently updated adding new features. And it will always be
free."

If you're super butthurt over the price of the hardware, there's nothing
stopping you from writing firmware for the GreaseWeazel using the
documented communication protocol that the AS hardware uses. Of course
you'd still have to touch one of those icky* Macs, but I can't solve all
your problems for you.

You mean in the metal, or the plastic?

In the plastic, an insert would be more durable, but then again it would be
another part you'd have to stock, rather than print.

I was referring to the plastic. A PEM fastener would do the same job in
metal. #6-32 heat set inserts are very cheap, even on Amazon. (less than
$20 for 100 of them)

The two holes in the base take screws to mount to the rack. Depending on
left vs right, you would drill and tap the indentations on one side or the
other.

Why on earth would you 3D print something like that? Machining it from

The DEC part is essentially bent bar stock, with a nut press-fit into it.
Also easy to to do if you have the tooling. I know a lot more folks with a 3D

Total shipping price for three boxes is shown to be $21.35.

Don, it's not the weight, it's the size. They use a thing called

They didn't deal with it at all. It didn't work. No normal 8-inch floppy
disks have both index holes in the jacket. If you convert a disk from SS to
DS, or vice versa, by punching the other index hole in the jacket, you have
to cover the original, unless you're going to use it in a drive that has
only one index sensor (typically an SS drive).

I've got at least three boxes of NOS Dysan disks with both of those index
holes present, so they certainly were made commercially.

No, it was actually some absurdly huge number. It has something to do

Some of the colours are listed in DEC-STD-092

though it's not immediately obvious which one is the grey for the
cabinet side panels. Even then I think it's tricky to map to something
you can actually buy. MUN is short for Munsell. Not sure about CHM.

There's a number of resources on the net for looking up Munsell color
numbers, and that might get you to what the color actually looks like. A
dedicated paint store may even be able to mix up paint based on the
original Munsell color code.

However, as Fred says, best to check the jumpers. I believe that Al has

Gene, are you certain that these aren't "flippy disks" (two index
apertures)?

Chuck, here's a photo of the disk type I'm using:

As you can see, they're not mirrored for "flippy" use.

But I've seen what you describe.

I recall one occasion where I received the single-double type that you
describe and having to cover the single-sided hole to get to the other
side of the disk.

If I have to mask off one of the index holes I can do that. I can
understand why Dysan would produce a disk that could be used in either
drive, but a drive that could use both single and double-sided media had
to have been common back then, which leaves me wondering how it was
handled.

Bitsavers will post process and create a searchable PDF

Since when?

No idea, but the IA will process the upload into html, plain text, mobi,
and OCRd PDF.

If I'm scanning bound books, those end up as indiviual tiff images (one
per page). At the end of processing those, they get stuffed into a zip
file with the suffix "cbz" (Comic Book Zip) and once uploaded, the derive
task at the IA handles all the OCR work as well as creating those other
formats. I'm pretty sure it will do the same with uploaded PDF files.

For 3D printing, depending on the technology of 3D printer, you need to

Dictating the infill pattern of a STL file is *never* the job of the

Kind of related, I've got a Diablo Series 30 disk drive (Model 31 H6)
that's free to a good home. Local pickup only though - it's a bit on the
chubby side to ship. :) I'm in Graham, WA.

For those of you with the Atari & Commodore pen plotters that have broken
pinion gears, there's now a guy making new ones in brass:

I was quite eager to hear Kossow's insights. Any engineer or programmer
(or both) worth their salt eagerly seeks and accepts the "but it would be really
handy if it did X, Y and Z" insights, especially if they're coming from
someone with decades of experience in the field in question.

How else will products improve?

You're absolutely correct, however the only thing Al contributes (for the
purposes of this particular discussion) are complaints about how other
people are doing it wrong. He complains about "siloed" projects, but the
silos are of his own construction. There's two fully open source projects
that do flux-level disk imaging, but he's apparently not interested in
helping either one because of how they choose to interact with their user
base. Frankly, as far as I'm concerned, he needs to cut loose his
belt-onions and quit shouting at clouds.

Already have one of those. Did you say you have it working with eight inch?

Not yet. It's on my TODO list.

Yes, and no.

Yes, there is /a/ product named Synchronet, probably from the same vendor or
subsidiary. However, I don't think that it is the /same/ product.

It's the same package, by the same author. Rob Swindell(author) released
Synchronet as open source a number of years ago. I currently run v3.18c,
which is the current release version. You can run it in Windows, Linux, or
*BSD. MS-DOS and OS/2 versions are also available under the "legacy"
branch. Downloads: http://www.synchro.net/download.html

If v3 won't import the DOS message bases automagically, I'm quite sure
that if you email Rob, he can help make this happen.
