Re: Multiple Messages

2000-04-07 Thread Seth Petry-Johnson

Is anyone else getting multiple copies of the same messages? Seems to only
have started in the last hour or two...

Sometimes... seems to be very intermittent. Its been happing for a few days
though. I don't know if the sender is somehow posting twice or if the list
server is goofing up.

I've been thinking that its the list server because I've seen duplicate
messages from some pretty computer savvy people (Dave Watts, for example)
who I wouldn't think would accidentally send duplicate posts.

Its been so infrequent though that I haven't paid it much thought. If I
start getting duplicates of *every* message I'll start to get concerned g.

This is the resolved source in the Nutscrape browser, the values are from

 FORM NAME="SearchForCars" ACTION="../cfm/body_car_details.cfm"
 TARGET="body" METHOD=POST

 INPUT TYPE="HIDDEN" NAME="Username" VALUE="test"
 INPUT TYPE="HIDDEN" NAME="UserID"
 VALUE="-2035698287"

The receiving template is pretty much irrelavent because all Im trying to

for debug is test the presence of the two values, just an IsDefined. But
it's not that code because the debug info on the end of the page shows no
values (wheareas it does in IE)... all the other form values (not hidden)
 are fine.

 Debug info:

 ___IE___

 Form Fields:

 MILEAGE=Mileage
 FORMSBUTTON2.X=32
 FORMSBUTTON2.Y=18
 MODEL=Model
 USERNAME=test
 USERID=-2035698287

FIELDNAMES=USERNAME,USERID,MAKE,MODEL,YEAR,MILEAGE,FORMSBUTTON2.X,FORMSBUTTO

RE: Alphabetical Order

2000-04-07 Thread Dan G. Switzer, II

Aslam,

If you have control of your query, then use the ORDER BY clause to sort your
data in a specific manor-this is the best approach. Let the database do what
it does best.

For example:

CFQUERY NAME="GetServices" DATASOURCE="SomeDSN"
SELECT ServiceID, Description
FROM Services
ORDER BY Description
/CFQUERY

CFOUTPUT QUERY="GetServices"#Description#BR
/CFOUTPUT

NOTE: To sort by "descending" order, add "DESC" after the column name. You
can also sort by multiple columns.

Re: Speed of CFMAIL

2000-04-07 Thread Dirk De Bock

To the disk. I missed the bit about getting the message to the client.

So first the messages are queued locally, then I deliver them to a smart
host at my provider, this will be typically at 150 to 300 msg per minute,
obviously depending on numerous factors such as local server load, remote
server load, bandwidth.

To actually get them delivered to the client is not my concern at this
point, not until my ISP starts complaining. I guess this will takes a couple
of hours to get the last one out.

CFTREE problem

2000-04-07 Thread Day Larry

This is a strange one. I have an application that has been running
on the client server for months with no problem. Then the client
decided to upgrade the CF server from 3 to 4.5. Of course, problems
popped up, but most were easily fixed. The one I can't figure out
is the CFTREE. On one of the branches of the tree (there are three
main branches that work fine), the links give users a "not able to
access server" message, so I tried it and those links are trying to
access the localhost 127.0.0.1. All links on the tree are coded with
a path variable declared in the application.cfm file. Anyone have any
ideas?

Thanks,
Larry

Re: Using CFX_Excel

2000-04-07 Thread Fred Sanders

Your right I haven't used the tag. Depending on how you want the layout to
look though, what can be easier or have less overhead than having CF output
query results to an HTML file and simply saving it with *.xls on the end
instead of *.htm or *.html You obviously didn't try it, either. :)
Do whatever works for you and gets the job done the way you want it.

 Hi Fred,

I think we have solved the problem. First, I put the tag in a CFLOCK to
prevent attempts at multi-threading. Then, there was
another problem. I was not aware that our SysAdmin had made the https
directory a little different structure than the http
directory. There were some added characters in the path so here is what
was happening. Excel was generating the spreadsheet (Sheet
1), but because it could not find the directory, it kept sitting there
with the message "Do you want to save Sheet 1?". These were
stacking up and I think this was what was really causing the problem.

As for the CFX_Excel, I can't imagine that you've used the tag if you
suggested I first save the file as HTML and doing all that
formatting. CFX_Excel makes it Sooo much simpler.

Why bother with the tag. If your wanting to output nice looking
spreadsheets and don't mind having to make painful amount nested tables
you
can have professional looking Excel97/2K spreadsheets by creating them as
HTML files and saving them with an .xls extension before allowing the user
to download them. I don't think it will work with anything below Excel 97
though, but the results in the end are worth the trouble your going to go
 through getting the layout perfect.

 Subject: Using CFX_Excel

Anybody got a clue on this??? 8-)

  + Original Message Sent 7:47am ET +

  Good Morning,

Are there any known issues surrounding the use of the CFX_Excel tags?
I'm
using it for several applications now, and I was
wondering if there are any issues to be aware of - like, how many
concurrent calls to Excel can it handle? The reason I've asked is
that two days in a row, Excel on our server caused a "kernel32.dll"
error
and locked the server. Now, assuming that nothing is
hosed up in Windows NT (we all know that never happens) and the Excel
install is A-OK (which it seems to have been to the point the
problems started) - what are the possibilities? I'm wondering if too
much
traffic on the tag/application combo might be the
culprit? Also, can you do a CFLOCK to avoid this problem? Any
thoughts?

  Thanks,
  Dave

OT (longish) Tango??

2000-04-07 Thread Dick Applebaum

The item (below) was included in a posting to another UG...

...the author is an employee of Pervasive (Developer of Tango)

It's claims caught my attention.

Anyone have any thoughts/experiences with Tango vs CF.

Dick

I am a senior software engineer for Pervasive Software (the maker of Tango).
I work in the developer solutions group and I was responsible for writing
the StoreFront demo that comes with package. I can tell you that Tango
handles "all" of the above. As I write this, I am in the middle of a
multi-developer/multi-site development effort for the largest project I've
ever been involved with - all built completely around Tango. We are using
SourceSafe for source control and Tango directly connects to this package
from within the IDE (as well others) - key to survival here! Tango is very
XML centric, the application files Tango generates are XML and Tango has a
full set of XML/DOM interfaces - including the ability to retrieve and send
XML over HTTP which allows things like WML
(http://www.pervasive.com/news/pr/pr00apr05.html), SOAP, and other XML
standards to be used. Tango is a GUI driven "action" based development
environment that also includes an extensible "Mark-up language" as well as
object oriented design capabilities (Tango class files) and the ability to
directly use both COM and Java Beans - and even other extensibility features
(DLL, command line, apple script). All this, and not mention that Tango is
available on Window, UNIX, Linux and Mac platforms. We find many users
preferring to develop on the Mac platform and deploy on NT or UNIX. Tango
also has the ability, unlike CF, to separate the Tango server from the Web
Server allowing a higher level of security to be implemented by placing a
firewall between Tango and your web server - this is very critical when your
database also needs to be behind the firewall yet doesn't use TCP/IP as a
transport mechanism! Tango can connect to any data store that supports
ODBC, and can also directly connect to Oracle (via OCI) and Pervasive.SQL.
I can go on, but I don't need to - I can say what ever I want, only you can
decide for yourself if the tool is right for you, so don't take my word for
it, try it yourself: http://www.pervasive.com/tango/.

Also, be sure to visit some sites built on Tango:

http://www.theglobe.com
http://www.colleges.com
http://www.jokes.com
http://componentzone.pervasive.com

Thanks,
Ritchie

*** Thoughts on Cold Fusion ***

In CF, there is no action based GUI like Tango's, it has only a page-based
layout. The CF Editor is just Allaire's HomeSite product with CF tags
thrown in. Although CF has project wizards, it still takes hours to days to
do what Tango's Search Builder can do in four minutes. The graphical
structure of Tango makes it much easier to use for big projects, and easy
source control integration and Tango-based objects means that it is easy to
split a project between many people.

*** Key Tango Features ***

- Intuitive, visual application development environment-the Tango
Development Studio.
- 26 built-in actions for implementing business logic.
- Object extensibility with COM objects and JavaBeans.
- Tango's own object model-robust reusability with Tango class files.
- State-of-the-art personalization and content management.
- Full XML implementation for accurate business-to-business communication.
- Cross-platform development on Windows or Mac OS.
- Multi-platform deployment on Windows NT/95/98, Solaris, Linux and
Macintosh.
- A robust Application Server that scales to meet increasing demands.
- Team-based development features, such as source code control mechanisms
for secure development.
- Native Oracle support and bundled ODBC drivers for advanced database
connectivity.
- Pervasive.SQL 2000 database bundled with Windows, Solaris and Linux
versions.
- Online tutorials, demos and sample code to jumpstart development and cut
the learning curve.

*** Usability Highlights ***

- Able to separate application logic from presentation logic. This makes it
MUCH easier to modify someone else's' code.
- Able to break down presentation code into smaller bite size pieces.
- Search/Update/Delete Database Actions are very fast to setup and useful
for integrating data rapidly into web applications.

One of the Key features that we are looking for in Cold Fusion is

all the more critical.

One more feature we are looking hard is CFML and XML integration.

How does Tango handle the above?
Does Tango have its own server side Mark-up language?

RE: Netscape 6 Eats Microsoft PWS...Story at 11

2000-04-07 Thread Steve Bernard

This is a bit OT but, my impression so far is underwhelming. There are some
nice additions, such as the cookie viewer, enhancements to Messenger, and
more efficient screen space. Under Win98 I have had it crash on me a couple
of times in the 3 days that I have had it installed. Others who are running
it under NT haven't experienced this. Also, as far as I've found, there
aren't (m)any plugins that work with it yet. On install you can choose to
have a Flash/Shockwave plugin included but, I have yet to find a site that
recognizes this. I understand that this is a preview release which was
motivated by political events, i.e. M$'s problems, but, that doesn't make it
any easier to evaluate. One annoyance I found is that if you don't choose to
include the Messenger product then you can't use 'maito:' links. Also, there
the address bar doesn't include the traditional pull-down capability and the
'Go' menu, which acts as a substitute, blanks out some of it's entries
although you can still click on these blank areas and be taken to the
respective site. I guess this provides a surprise! kind of feel :)
Auto-complete in the location bar doesn't work either :( Lastly, page loads
are a bit slower than IE 5.x. It's enough to be noticeable. On the other
hand, CSS support is much better and I am getting to like the widget set.
It's nice to see something other than the default MS widgets.

I hope they work it all out quickly 'cause IE 5.5 is just around the corner
and I want to see the Netscape browser succeed. After all, our
infrastructure standardized on it several years ago and I'd hate to have to
use a 3 year old browser.

RE: Indiana time (EST) -- Michigan time (DST)

2000-04-07 Thread Steve Bernard

Well, if I read his post correctly, the server resides in a location that is
on EST all year without ever switching to daylight savings time and back
again. The client site is on EST but does use daylight savings time.
Therefore, once the client site goes to DST he'll need to add an hour so
that the viewed time at the client is (EST + 1). Once the client 'falls
back' to normal EST the posted time on the server will still be (EST + 1),
which is wrong.

If I understand you correctly, you just use DateAdd("h", "1", Now()). This
would add 1 hour to the current time. Don't forget to add logic which
monitors the current date otherwise you'll be an hour off for half the year

If DateAdd("h", "1", Now()) adds 1 hour to the current time, how do you
figure it would be off half the year?

RE: How do I retrieve from this list

2000-04-07 Thread Chris Evans

You can retrieve the part number using Mid function:

CFSET partno= Mid(Fieldname,5,Len(Fieldname)-5)
CFSET quantity = Evalaute(Fieldname)

You can loop through the FIELDNAMES list to get each value and quantity.
Depending on what you want to do with these, you could create a structure,
or an array, or a query, or whatever.

RE: Parsing NNTP dates?

2000-04-07 Thread Chris Evans

Reuben,

Where are you getting the dates from? Fuseware's CFX_NNTP handles this
automatically.

The only way I know to do it would be to break the date into a space
delimited list. You would then have to loop through checking values to see
what date part it consisted of, and then building a valid date object from
that.

CFLOOP list=Query.Value ??

I have a list of comma seperated numbers in a field in my database. I would
like to retrieve this list of numbers, which are primary keys to other

what I have:

- snip -
CFQUERY name="qryGetKidsFromParentsID" datasource="Gymtime"
SELECT emer_ref FROM contact WHERE contact_id = #URL.sel#
/cfquery
- snip -
CFLOOP index="varLoopKidIDFromParentRelationships"
list="qryGetKidsFromParentsID.emer_ref" delimiters=","
- snip -

The error I am getting is this:

- -
ODBC Error Code = S0002 (Base table not found)

[Sybase][ODBC Driver][Adaptive Server Anywhere] Table or view not found:
Correlation name 'qryGetKidsFromParentsID' not found

The list="Query.Value" sounds good in theory, but I'm sure I'm doing it way
wrong. Any suggestions?

Chris,

I'm not sure why you're getting the error (Jeff, where are you?), but I
recommend that you move the SelectEntity function from the frame #1
document into the frame #2 document, and call it from the frame #1
document.

In Netscape, you don't need to rebuild an entire form to associate two
select boxes. I have done this several times. What code are using in your

So.

... please shoot me in the head.

I was just pasting the code into an email when
all at once I was hit by a startling revelation!
I AM STUPID!!!

My template is a bunch of dynamically created drop downs, where depending on
what's clicked in one - another is populated via a series of javascript
funcs.

In IE, this is a relatively easy thing becuase all you need to do is delete
the option values and renew them. But Netscape the pain in the arse
which is Netscape... the 'please kill me now, I have to get this to work
with' Netscape!
With Netscape you have to rebuild the whole form... EVERTHING! which is a
page of javascript.

And what did I forget to do?
I didn't add the two hidden form elements to the javascript functions - so
it appeared in the page source, but not in the regenerated page.

Please, somebody, shoot me in the head.

Thank you to everyone who replied.

The item (below) was included in a posting to another UG...

...the author is an employee of Pervasive (Developer of Tango)

It's claims caught my attention.

Anyone have any thoughts/experiences with Tango vs CF.

Dick

I am a senior software engineer for Pervasive Software (the maker of
Tango).
Tango is a GUI driven "action" based development
environment that also includes an extensible "Mark-up language" as well as
object oriented design capabilities (Tango class files) and the ability to
directly use both COM and Java Beans - and even other extensibility
features
(DLL, command line, apple script). All this, and not mention that Tango is
available on Window, UNIX, Linux and Mac platforms. We find many users
preferring to develop on the Mac platform and deploy on NT or UNIX. Tango
also has the ability, unlike CF, to separate the Tango server from the Web
Server allowing a higher level of security to be implemented by placing a
firewall between Tango and your web server - this is very critical when
your
database also needs to be behind the firewall yet doesn't use TCP/IP as a
transport mechanism! Tango can connect to any data store that supports
ODBC, and can also directly connect to Oracle (via OCI) and Pervasive.SQL.
I can go on, but I don't need to - I can say what ever I want, only you can
decide for yourself if the tool is right for you, so don't take my word for
it, try it yourself: http://www.pervasive.com/tango/.

Also, be sure to visit some sites built on Tango:

http://www.theglobe.com
http://www.colleges.com
http://www.jokes.com
http://componentzone.pervasive.com

Thanks,
Ritchie

*** Thoughts on Cold Fusion ***

In CF, there is no action based GUI like Tango's, it has only a page-based
layout. The CF Editor is just Allaire's HomeSite product with CF tags
thrown in. Although CF has project wizards, it still takes hours to days
to
do what Tango's Search Builder can do in four minutes.

This makes
it
MUCH easier to modify someone else's' code.
- Able to break down presentation code into smaller bite size pieces.
- Search/Update/Delete Database Actions are very fast to setup and useful
for integrating data rapidly into web applications.

RE: HELP Getting Identity Field Accurately

2000-04-07 Thread Dave Watts

 In referring to this article:
 http://www.defusion.com/articles/index.cfm?ArticleID=72

The method below of inserting a record is not a
reliable way to get the corresponding record id
 in Cold Fusion:

 cftransaction

 cfquery name="my_insert" datasource="whatever"
 INSERT INTO myTable
...
 /cfquery

 cfquery name="get_id" datasource="whatever"
 SELECT MAX(myTable.ID) as new_id
FROM myTable
 /cfquery

 /cftransaction

Is this article correct in stating this method does
not work, even if the code is wrapped in a
 CFTRANSACTION??

Yes, this method doesn't guarantee that you'll retrieve the correct identity
column value. Here's why.

Transactions use locking to prevent problems caused by concurrent requests.
The database locks all the resources used by the transaction until that
transaction has completed; if it fails, the database can then roll back the
changes because it has locked those resources.

Different databases implement locking differently. They have different
scopes, so to speak. For example, some databases lock individual rows.
Others lock not only the row being used, but other rows immediately before
and/or after that row. Some lock entire tables!

In a database that locks individual rows, the above transaction can't
guarantee that you'll get the desired result. The first query inserts a
record, and locks that row. No other rows are locked, so someone else
inserts a row right after that. The second query then retrieves that row's
identity, instead of the one you've inserted. The transaction still
completes, but you get the wrong identity value.

This could even happen in situations where you don't have row-level locking;
that just makes it more likely.

What is the best, scalable method for retrieving
the identity field from the database, in the
 anticipation of heavy traffic?

Use stored procedures, or failing that, triggers, to retrieve the identity
column. Within a stored procedure, you can reference the @@IDENTITY variable
(in SQL Server). Within a trigger, you can reference the specific record
inserted using INSERTED.

instead of *.htm or *.html You obviously didn't try it, either. :)

As for the CFX_Excel, I can't imagine that you've used the tag if you
suggested I first save the file as HTML and doing all that
formatting. CFX_Excel makes it Sooo much simpler.

can have professional looking Excel97/2K spreadsheets by creating them as

Yes, this works well for visual things.

But it does not allow for SpreadSheet kinds of things, like macros, data

Gee it sort of depends. Is he planning to bring it over in a U-Haul and

Are you just planning to put the drive on a shelf or is it 4GB of data that
he wants to put on the Internet.

My guess is no more than $200 a month plus what ever bandwidth he needs. Why
$200? Because that is what some places charge for collocation services so it
means he could locate an entire computer for $200 a month in a rack.

Hope this helps. Good Luck,

Re: cfquery vs. cftransaction

2000-04-07 Thread Bud

On 4/7/00, Jim Taylor penned:

Is this the best way to handle a 2 table insert ?

The main reason to run a cftransaction is if the results from one
query are going effect the entry into another.

For instance:

1. Someone places and order and the order is written to the orders
table with an insert query in and the order id is incremented in an
autonumber field.

2. Now you need to write the individual items purchased into a line
items table. You pick up the order id from the orders table doing a
max(order_id) in your select query.

By placing the two queries inside a cftransaction tag, it will assure
that someone else doesn't insert an order in the instant between when
you insert yours and pick up the max(order_id). Otherwise, you would
place their order number into the line items record of the previous
order.

If you do it the other way, checking the max(order_id) and then
adding 1 and entering the order id into the orders table (in other
words, incrementing yourself as opposed to an autonumber field) then
it wouldn't be necessary as you'd pass that same number into the line
items table also.

You are doing multiple inserts so you should do multiple queries...

Try something like:

cfset listmonth = "May, May, May"

cfloop index="loopinx" from="1" to="#listlen(listregion)#"
   cfquery datasource="GOE"
 INSERT INTO Testgoe(Region, ExpenseID);
 VALUES ('#listgetat(listregion,loopinx)#', #listgetat(cats,loopinx)#)

 Hello everyone,

I have a looping problem that I can't quite get!

I have 5 lists as follows:
 region = "Africa, Africa, Africa"
 ID = "5, 10, 15"
 month = "May, May, May"
 proj_amt = "120, 200, 4000"
 budget_amt = "200, 230, 5000"

This data is coming from user input from a previous page and then gets
inserted into a DB. So, each record will be region, ID, month, proj_amt,
 budget_amt.
There is logic as to why region and month have the same elements.

To make it easier I'm showing my code for the first three lists:
 cfset listregion = "Africa,Africa,Africa"
 cfset Cats = "5, 10, 15"
cfset listmonth = "May, May, May"

 cfquery name="Insert_Budget" datasource="GOE"
 cfloop index="a" list="#variables.listregion#"
 cfloop index="b" list="#variables.Cats#"
 INSERT INTO Testgoe(Region, ExpenseID);
 VALUES ('#Evaluate('a')#', #Evaluate(b)#)
   /cfloop
 /cfloop
 /cfquery

You are doing multiple inserts so you should do multiple queries...

Try something like:

cfset listregion = "Africa,Africa,Africa"
cfset Cats = "5, 10, 15"
cfset listmonth = "May, May, May"

cfloop index="loopinx" from="1" to="#listlen(listregion)#"
   cfquery datasource="GOE"
 INSERT INTO Testgoe(Region, ExpenseID);
 VALUES ('#listgetat(listregion,loopinx)#', #listgetat(cats,loopinx)#)
   /cfquery
/cfloop

Subject: Most efficeint validation

Hello,

I've just been trying to figure out the most efficent way to check for a
passed (form or url) variables pesence and value. The code I've been using
is:

CFIF (IsDefined("ATTRIBUTES.Request_time") IS "No") OR
(Trim(ATTRIBUTES.Request_time) IS "")
Request_time is not defined
CFELSE
Request_time is defined
/CFIF

But is this the best way, it must be a common problem. I also thought about
using :

CFPARAM NAME="ATTRIBUTES.Request_Time" DEFAULT="0"
CFIF Trim(RequestTime) IS "0"
Request_time is not defined
CFELSE
Request_time is defined
/CFIF

but that doesn't work as it doesn't apply the value 0 if Request_time is
passed but not defined... So is the first method the best?

Thanks
Ben

2000-04-07 Thread Todd Ashworth

It's not the ideal, normalized situation, but I think all
  he's missing are the #'s.

I guess I just assume that everyone normalizes their tables.

Please explain how I could normalize this table? Database designs is not my
forte, but unfortunately, I have the joy of learning that hard way.

What I have is a list of relationships. For each contact in my database, I
have a field in the contact table that contains the comma delimited list of
numbers. These numbers are the primary key values for other contacts in the
contact table that this person has set up a relationship to. Is this not
the best way to handle this?

David

ahhh, your crafty ploy of posting without a subject has sparked my
curiosity and forced me to read your message! ;)

If you are concerned about your query not returning any records - resulting
in an empty table - do something like the following:

cfif results.recordcount GT 0
---do all your table stuff here ---
cfelse
Sorry, your search returned no records...etc.etc.
/cfif

A couple extra notes - added at no extra cost to the consumer:
-You don't need #'s in your CFIF's
Example: cfif CeramicSeries IS "NOT CERAMIC"...
-You can use NOT within a CFIF to reverse the test and avoid a CFELSE
Example: cfif NOT material IS "Ceramic Tiles"
 #material#
 /cfif

;) I don't know if it works on _all_ custom tags, but I use this technique
with 2 tags on one of my sites, because it's easier than fooling with having

If I need to use a CFX tag on a site hosted by a remote CF ISP, is the
only
way to use such a tag to have it registered directly in the administrator?
Is there any other way to use them? (ie, if they say "we don't do custom
tags for you" then am I outta luck?)

If you put the custom tag in the same directory as the page that references
it, they should work just fine for you and you might just get away with it
;) I don't know if it works on _all_ custom tags, but I use this technique
with 2 tags on one of my sites, because it's easier than fooling with having
someone install them.

Much easier Joe after you query, call query variable
'queryname.ComlumnList'. Will give you a comma delimited list of the

cfset x=Select Field_Names from Table_Name

I am looking for a control tag similar to CF_Select, but as multiple items

the currently selected items.

if anyone knows how to get or simulate a modal dialog with a selectable

Semi OT: Passing JavaScript variables to other CF/JS templates

2000-04-07 Thread Gary McNeel, Jr.

I am trying to find a way to pass a JavaScript variable into a that would
use it in another JavaScript code.

I am using a JavaScript/CF page that, when the user clicks a button, a
JavaScript popup window appears that has a CF calendar in it (thanks to
Selena). Users then click on a date and that is pushed back into the main
page, populating the date field.

I have several fields on the page that use dates and I want this to work for
the users. The tag Selena wrote is hard coded for a particular field. I want
to pass the field name of the date field the user is currently selecting
INTO the CF popup calendar template. That way, when the User clicks on a
date, the code passes it back into the right date field. This would keep me
from 10 different hard coded calendars templates.

Any ideas or even good resources that might do this. Thanks.

RE: Session Variables and Time Outs

..Sorry my eariler post was so messy (HTML formatted)...

Hello everyone,

I am posting to this list for the first time. I have a question concerning
Session, Client, and Application Variables. I was wondering if anyone knows
a place where I can find a DEFINITIVE source on the useage of these CF
Elements. What controls them, the application file, or the Server, what
their scope is, and their true lifecycle in an application (mine seem to
exist after the session is over and I restart it again.) I am developing a
site that depends greatly on session variables in particular and I seem to
get a lot of unexpected activity from the usage of these session variables.
(exist when they shouldn't, die unexpectedly, etc.)

Also, I would like, instead of my users getting an ugly, indecipherable CF
message, to get a clean (I'm sorry, but you're received an unexpected error,
and have the CF system send the ugly CF code back to me in an email so I can
proactively respond to the problem.)

Thanks in advance for your help,

Re: OT (longish) Tango??

2000-04-07 Thread Kevin R. Merker

Since my beginner development with web base data base connectivity started
on the Mac platform years ago with File Maker Pro and File Maker Pro Web
Companion. Tango was there. It was my understanding then, Tango gave you the
ability to do things File Maker Pro an/or with Web Companion, that Web
Companion couldn't do by itself. From the Mac developer standpoint at the
time it was the leader in data base / web connectivity. I moved to CF
because of greater base usage of the Windows OS platform and the
availability of work. I didn't know that they had Ideas of ported it over to
other OS platforms. If you are a ripened CF developer, Tango will be a
breeze to pick up. And now the Mac OS base is growing like a wild fire.
Consider this; Apple has take the Apache Server, BSD Unix and Java and
wrapped the Apple GUI functionality around the advanced Mach Kernel in Mac
OS X Server. Add the Darwin video streaming capability and QuickTime 4 the
standard in nonlinear editing format. (Media 100, Premiere, Final Cut Pro
and Avid nonlinear editing systems are based on this format, just to name a
few. Also, Apple's huge financial investment in Akami. Akami's rapidly
growing network infrastructure of QuickTime streaming severs all over the US
and the world. Oracle has developed a QuickTime serving data base that will
be released soon. With bandwidth growing from the likes of DSL cable
modems. Nobody can't stop the telecommunication companies ATT, Sprint, Time
Warner/ / AOL from buying up ISP's and TV cable providers. I can safely
assume that Tango isn't going anywhere. Tango was the industry standard for
the Mac OS platform. Apple is selling more computers now, then ever in the
history of Apple Computer. Mac OS isn't going anywhere. If you can take your
skills that you have learned with CF, spend a couple of weeks getting
familiar with Tango. It will only expand you as a developer, your value in
the work force and marketability within this industry.

I do not work for Apple or Tango.

I had identical configurations on both NT Server 4 and Windows 2000 AS - as Dave

almost completely.

I certainly won't be upgrading my Win2K until I have to for the sake of CF 4.01
Enterprise, but I do expect Allaire to fix what I regard as a very serious bug.

I don't think Allaire should provide and install MDAC anyway with the install -
MDAC is a matter for system administrators to manage on their own setups as they
see fit IMO.

RE: CFLOOP list=Query.Value ??

2000-04-07 Thread Dave Watts

Please explain how I could normalize this table? Database
designs is not my forte, but unfortunately, I have the joy
 of learning that hard way.

If you want to build database applications, it's a good idea to spend some
time learning about designing data schemas. I can't overemphasize this. I
see quite a few CF applications, and the biggest problems with those
applications aren't the CF coding itself, but either the database design or
the actual SQL used to query.

What I have is a list of relationships. For each contact in
my database, I have a field in the contact table that contains
the comma delimited list of numbers. These numbers are the
primary key values for other contacts in the contact table
that this person has set up a relationship to. Is this not
the best way to handle this?

It sounds like each contact has one or more relationships with other
contacts in the same table. This is essentially the same as a many-to-many
relationship, except that both sides of the relationship are stored in the
same table. You can create a linking table, which might have two fields:

Contact_Relationship:
Contact_ID - integer
Relationship_Contact_ID - integer

The table should have both fields related to the Contact_ID field within the
Contact table, and should use both fields to define its primary key, and
shouldn't have any identity column

Instead of writing the list of numbers into a field within the contact
table, loop over the list of numbers and insert each one as a relationship
contact ID. For example, let's say that Contact 47 has relationships with
12, 15 and 92. You could then insert each of these relationships into your
Contact_Relationship table:

!--- Contact_ID = 47, ListOfRelationships = "12,15,92" ---

CFLOOP INDEX="i" LIST="#ListOfRelationships#"

CFQUERY NAME="qInsRelationship" ...
INSERT INTO Contact_Relationship
(Contact_ID,
 Relationship_Contact_ID)
VALUES
(#Contact_ID#,
 #i#)
/CFQUERY

/CFLOOP

This should be enough to get you started.

RE: Can anyone advise? How to define an application variable?

2000-04-07 Thread Dave Watts

So I created an application.cfm file and placed it in the
same directory as all my other .cfm files. In it I did a
bunch of named CFQUERYs to retrieve the legal values as
 part of application initialization.

Then in my regular .cfm templates I refered to something like
 #Application.query_name.column_name# (where Application is
literal). I got an error message when the referring template
was launched telling me that it didn't know about my
 applications variable.

My question is: Am I doing this right? Is this the way to
define and then use application level variables? Is it true
that these queries will be executed only once in the application
or will they be executed whenever any template is launched
(when the automatic inclusion of Application.cfm occurs)?
Do I need some CFIF in the Application.cfm template to make
sure they are executed only once? If so, what should the condition
 be? etc. etc. etc.

Without seeing your code, I can only make assumptions about what exactly
you're doing. Here goes.

1. You'll need a CFAPPLICATION tag in application.cfm to use Application or
Session variables. It might look like this:

CFAPPLICATION NAME="myapp" SESSIONMANAGEMENT="TRUE"

2. You'll only want to execute the queries if they're not already stored as
application variables, so you'll need to wrap them in conditional logic to
check for their non-existence. You'll probably want to do all this within
application.cfm:

CFIF NOT IsDefined("Application.MyQuery")
CFQUERY NAME="Application.MyQuery" ...
...
/CFQUERY
/CFIF

3. You'll have to use "Application." or "Session." in your query name to
place it within the Application or Session scope.

level SQL ODBC driver included. This leads me to believe that CF 4.01 was doing
something more fundamental - on a machine with the highest level MDAC it tried
to do something which plain broke it.

The point I am making is that I don't think Allaire should include MDAC in the
install at all - they should simply state the minimum server requirements for
any given version of CF as they do for other hardware and software, and state
minimum levels of MDAC required if necessary - it is up to the system
adminstrator then to comply. This is particularly true of Win2k install, where,
as you say, MDAC is a fundamental part of the O/S installation.

Subject: cfhttp internal networks

We have two web servers on internal networks divided by a firewall. I can
not get cfhttp to work. Get connection failure.

I can no problem do www.yahoo.com or any other internet site. I was
wondering if anybody could explain to me a little more detail of how cfhttp
works(ports, actions,.)
this way I can have something to go to our firewall people with.

thanks

IKE

Best Chat Solution

2000-04-07 Thread Paul's Mail

I need to add a chat facility to a site - something I have not done before.
What is the best and easiest one to implement? I cannot find any on the
Allaire site. The only normal chat facility I found had broken links.

Re: Best Chat Solution

2000-04-07 Thread Michael Grundvig

IRCd for windows is excellent. I have a port from a friend of mine and I am
sure he would hook you up. You can see a simple Java interface for it here:

http://irc.simplematter.com

Please be kind to the site, its still in early beta. Hence the reason the
IRC server is set to so few connections. Also, with IRCd, you are able to
connect to it like a man/woman should. With mIRC, or any other IRC client.
Feel free to email me with any questions or comments

Mike
