SPECTRA: Embed an object within itself...

2000-05-16 Thread Sean M. O'Brien

Hello all,

I asked this question at my CFUG meeting tonight and no one knew the
answer. I am creating a product catalog for a web site using Allaire
Spectra. I create a product object and an option object. So that each option
can have it's own SKU, price, etc. What I want to do is then make each
option have it's own set of options. So that a shirt that is red is only
available in large, etc. My problem comes when I try to embed the option
object within itself. I create a property using the option object and when I
go to edit the option object and try to add a new property, the option
property is not there. If I am totally going about this the wrong way,
please let me know, but this is the best way I could think of to accomplish
my goal. Here is a visual:

Product: T-Shirt
Option: BLUE
Option: SMALL
SKU: 001BS
PRICE: 3.25
Option: MEDIUM
SKU: 001BM
PRICE: 3.34
Option: LARGE
Option: RED
Option: MEDIUM
SKU: 001RM
PRICE: 3.99
Option: LARGE
SKU: 001RL
PRICE: 4.50

Does this make sense to everyone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sean O'Brien

Re: what is ODBC 37000 error ??

2000-05-16 Thread David Cummins

I don't actually know the answer, but if you do find out, let me know.

One of our sites, the server (which is hosted by someone else) is chewing up 10k
of memory every second for no known reason. They recently installed Service Pack
6, or something like that.

Luckily its not our problem, but its good to know these things...

Re: SQL ID

2000-05-16 Thread David Cummins

If that's what you're talking about (MSSQL Server), it can do autonumbers.

You just have to set it to non-null, identity seed=1, identity increment=1. Use
Enterprise Manager the first time.

encryption

Hi,

What is the best way to encrypt cfm files?
If I have 200 files that I want encrypted before I upload to the server what
is the best and fastest way to do this?

Is there a batch program out there that can do this quicly?

Also, it is possible to de-encrypt after I encrypt it?

thanks

Re: Formatting Table Join Output question

2000-05-16 Thread Michael Imhoff

I would double check your relationships in the db, if those aren't perfect
it can mess up a lot of your data.

Can you get your query working correctly in Access? If not, then check the
relationships as I mentioned above but if you can, just call the query with
cfstoredproc. It will be a lot faster plus it's cleaner and more reusable.

Hope that helps,
-Michael

WHERE calendar_depositions.depodate > startdate

Depending on what database you are using because they don't all handle dates
the same way, you might want to create the data 7 days ago and then use the
Year, Day, and Month function along with the CreateDate function so that
your times are correct.

Just a thought,

You should try putting all of those queries into a stored procedure instead
of calling query after query.

What exactly are you trying to do on that one page? Maybe there is a better
way of doing it...

Hope that helps,

The tag is open source so you could add another parameter to give distinct
names to whatever needs to be distinct to make the tag run.

As far as the first questionYou would probably be better off creating
your own setup with wddx but that can be tricky to get working flawlessly

If you just want to make sure that a negative number won't throw an error,
it is best to check the lengths first but you could do something like this
if you really want to. It would at least suppress the error.

You know... there seems to be another new cf*.com site showing up every
other day of late (and then going stale within two months). Someone out
there might as well do a site who's sole intent is to crack every iteration

what is ODBC 37000 error ??

2000-05-16 Thread vincy

hi,
Im running my site on the coldfusion 4.0 server, with NT 4.0 and SQL 7.0
The strangest thing has been happening the last few days, Ive been
getting these
ODBC 37000 errors quite often. It says that there is not enough memory to
run the query.

No one at the place that is hosting the site can figure out what page
is causing this.
They say that over a period of time the memory gets eaten up until it the
server runs out of memory.

Im guessing that one of the pages that is used often is a page that has a
number of queries and loops to the SQL server .

Anyone have any ideas on this ...Im running out of time. I cant have the
server crashing once in two days.

regards,
vince

RE: CF and Encryption

2000-05-16 Thread Mike Sheldon

Allaire has not revealed what algorithm they are using for the encrypt() and
decrypt() functions. However, given the "tone" of the few mentions they have
made of it, I highly suspect that it's someone's home-built XOR routine that
wouldn't stand up to analysis by a 5 year old with an abacus.

It's definitely *NOT* DES, since DES functions on 64bit data blocks, and
would therefore produce output of a number of characters divisible by 8.
(blocks less than 64bits must be padded)

Whatever this algorithm is, it produces approx. 1.5*n bytes for every n
bytes input, with some occasional garbage appended to the end. It's
definitely a stream-type cypher, and very definitely extremely weak.

Folks, the only reason this one hasn't been cracked is because no-one cares
enough yet.

Hello, everyone. I'm pretty new to the ColdFusion world, so please forgive
me if I ask something that seems a little obvious. I'm still learning the
ropes.

In the Feb 2000 issue of ColdFusion Journal, there's some code that creates
some killer form wizards. One problem, though. The WizForm.cfm custom tag
that collects info from "screen" to "screen" also includes the buttons
(back, submit, next). This is fine for a straight wizard, but I want to
pass the info in a CFMail tag to an e-mail that is stored in one of the form
variables. I can get everything to work, but when I send the info to the
processing page where the CFMail tag is, it sends the mail and shows the
user a confirmation page - - - with a back, submit, and next button on it!
It's making me crazy. How do I get these buttons off of here.

Well, you CAN do it with CFX_TCPClient as-is but the IRC server has to have
IDENT turned off. Most all irc servers these days required IDENT so...
.

You unfortunately will have to download the RFC for the IRC protocol and
read through all of it to do this ;-), but...

CF Two Select

2000-05-16 Thread Chris Badouin

Hello all-
Is there anyone who had experience with the "Two Select" tag in the Gallery?
Here is the issues I was hoping to solve

1. When a user uses the back button it disables the tag and requires a
refresh of the page to correct the problem.
2. Is it possible to use more than one on a page. We tried for a short bit
but were not able to get it to work.

Getting only records with a date

2000-05-16 Thread Chris Giminez

I'm failing to write a query that will get all records from a table when they have a
date entered
into a particular field. I want to exclude Null values.

This doesn't work. Still getting all the NULL records. What does work?

SELECT MyDate
FROM Table
WHERE (MyDate <> NULL)

Another Rhetorical Whinge

Because it feels so good to get these things out of the system...

Why does the ColdFusion Left() function only accept positive lengths, i.e. not
length zero? I've got to put an if condition in now to check for every time a
string is truncated to the empty string.

Urgh.

But it would be good for things where you have another method of confirmation,

Re: Session vars in a clustered environment

But considering that you can choose to store them in an external database, I
would assume that all the servers in the cluster could access the same set of
client variables.

They would just share an SQL server.

Thanks Steve - don't want to mention any names but it sounds something like
list caster. For those interested what happened was we sent a message to the
list and as expected some mailboxes didn't exist any more (which is quite
normal) so the receiving sever sent a message back to our list. Our list
server didn't know what to do with them so it sent them back to the sever
from whence they came and vice versa. Fortunately it wasn't an infinite loop
but it then proceeded to e-mail all the error messages to everyone on the
list. An issue aside - we had great difficulty with the interfaces for this
product - for example some fields and boxes were below the bottom of the
screen and we couldn't scroll down to them, we had to tab to expose them
which I think is very poor design.

Our ISP gives us access to major-domo via Major Cool which is quite good but
we can't administer all aspects of the list and have to rely on ISP support
for some of them - simple things such as changing the intro message for
example.

Thanks again for the advice Steve.

CF is the wrong tool for a mailing list. Sure you can do it, and yes you can
use Excel spreadsheets as a database instead of SQL but would you want to?
Figure out why your NT mailing product filed and get a better one. BTW,
which one was such a nightmare for you.

Well .. as someone else mentioned in response to me .. if you could steal
someone's encrypted cookie .. it wouldn't really matter in the case where
someone was masquerading as you. Sure, they might not be able to read your
personal info, but, i some cases, they could still sure pretend to be you
...

Re: "You have nice cookies .. mind if I have a look?"

2000-05-16 Thread Chris Giminez

But what good is an encrypted cookie?

If I have a cookie on my machine that automatically logs me in to Amazon's one click,
for example,
encryption is irrelevant if some hacker steals it and installs it as their own. Next
time they go to
Amazon, they're me; encryption or not.

What's scary about this is that you can only get your cookies "grabbed" by visiting a
site that is
trying to grab it, right? Well, what about an html email being read? Same thing as
visiting a site,
right? I would imagine a cookie grabbing script could be embedded in a typical html
spam just as
easily.

>CF is the wrong tool for a mailing list.

I agree. I think asking CF to do volume mail deliveries, do DNS lookups,
deal with a bunch of broken mail servers, Internet delays, etc, etc, is a
real waste of a CF machine. CF should be used to generate the mail but
hand off all the mail at LAN speed to a dedicated machine with a high
quality MTA that does the actual mail delivery.

RE: Seeking Broadcast E-mail System

2000-05-16 Thread Parker, Kevin

RE: "You have nice cookies .. mind if I have a look?"

If you're using the user's IP address, you'll likely get a surprise. Some
proxy servers, most notably AOL's, will rotate through several IP addresses
in a single session. The worst I've seen so far was an AOL user who's
requests came from 15 different IP addresses in 15 consecutive requests.

Yes, but the safest thing to do is to keep the client "profile" on the
server and only transmit the cookie. As an added measure of security you
can encrypt the cookie with the IP address as the key...

It just seems like the web is constantly adapting itself to new
information and new challenges. I agree with someone earlier (and with,
Doh! Microsoft) that no sensitive information should be stored in
cookies. However, encrypting whatever you do store and announcing that
fact (assuming this became a trend among developers), would sure take
the wind out of the sails of the muddled media, which seems to thrive on
manufactured crises in the web world. It's sort of akin to the privacy
statement many sites have where they promise not to share personal info
or e-mail addresses with anyone else.

Referrer is only available from a hyperlink, this is a built in security
feature of the browser to hide the users history from pages that are not
specifically linked together.

Yep, I realise that, what I mean though is that the referer is NEVER
there, for example I ran a few log files through webtrends and it came up
with no referers whatsoever. v.strange!
I've checked and in the properties for logging in IIS it is definitely
enabled to log the referer. I've ran tests by setting up a link on
another server to a page on our server and getting it to display the
referer but got nada... If I put this test page with the link on our
server though and have it link to another page on our server it does then
give the referer... is it possible for the the firewall to strip out the
referer or something odd like that?
I'm not to "up" on firewalls so dont laugh too hard if that sounds
ridiculous! :) I'm clutching at straws here...

Re: HTTP_REFERER Problem

2000-05-16 Thread David Cummins

I think that's pretty likely. A proxy could strip that stuff out as part of a
privacy policy.

Would this problem be likely to be at the server end, or the client end? Is this
for a client extranet (in which case it would probably be client end) or general
Internet (in which case it must be server end)?

Re: HTTP_REFERER Problem

2000-05-16 Thread Brian Mitter

Re: Session vars in a clustered environment

2000-05-16 Thread Brook Davies

One way to have client vars "expire" is to check to run simple check within
the application.cfm file. The following code checks if a user is logged in
(IsLoggedIn <> 0), and if the value of the IsloggedIn client variable is no
older than 20 minutes. If the client.IsLoggedIn variable is older than 20
minutes the user gets booted to the login screen. If the client Var is less
than 20 minutes it gets reset to the current time, essentially giving the
user another 20 minutes on the system. This code needs to run on every
page ie. application.cfm,app_globals.cfm.

Re: Cookie Question!

The best way to handle cookies is to set a unique ID with a cookie and then
store the user-specific info on the server. This is what CF does
automagically with sessions...

The referer is only filled in (that is, "extruded" haha) if the user clicks
on a hyperlink to get to your site. If you are browsing a site and simply
type in a new URL then the referer is blank.

Not being an expert or anything but I think session variables are probably a
dead cause for clustered systems. At least client variables can be stored in a
shared database.

BTW, is there an easy way you could make a client variable "expire", and use it

RE: "You have nice cookies .. mind if I have a look?"

2000-05-16 Thread Mike Sheldon

Summary of the problem:

In a nutshell, IE does not urldecode the request string before feeding it to
the routine that decides which cookie to send. I've written my own test
routines, and exploiting this hole is unbelievably simple.

All IE browsers on all MS platforms are vulnerable.

The really nasty bit is that you may never see the URL that stole your
cookies, it could be an embedded cgi or image link.

>>BTW, Amazon and friends encrypt their cookies

The fact that the cookies are encrypted may be irrelevant. Even if they
couldn't be cracked (doubtful) they could still be used to impersonate you.

It would be nice if Microsoft would at least acknowledge this bug. Quite
frankly, it should be trivial to fix, all they have to do is feed the
request through a url-decoding function first.

I'm not sure .. of course all the reports I've seen are going for shock
value and leaving the technical details usefull to the rest of us out. You
could test it I suppose. You could set such a cookie on your computer and
then go to the test site mentioned in the article and see if the exploit can
find your cookie .. it gives you the option to type in a speciffic domain
name to search for. It would be really kinda cool if it wasn't a potential
hazard.

BTW, Amazon and friends encrypt their cookies, from what I've heard. Anyone
have any CF related info on doing the same?

(job) DHTML/JS/CF developer (Atlanta)

2000-05-16 Thread Mike Amburn

We are currently reviewing resumes for a kickass UI Developer that would
also be familiar with CF. I am looking for someone that is very fluent in
DHTML, specifically dynamic positioning and scripting interaction between
frames, layers, and windows.

the position will be responsible for building kickass UI components for an
enterprise application suite. CF will be necessary to access specific
application variables that are tied to the UI DOM, but most development by
this person will be done in DHTML and JS... interactive calendars, errors
and alerts, drag-n-drop effects. Must be able to develop solutions across
both IE and Netscape. Must be able to take a design or idea and run with it.

if that's you and you're in the market, please send me your resume. for more
information about our company or the position, feel free to email me.

also feel free to pass this along to someone you know that might be
interested.

Formatting Table Join Output question

2000-05-16 Thread Kurt Wiersma

Thank you for your help on this query below it is not working under Access.

I am now trying, with the code below, to output the results of this query to
an email. I need the audienceIDs to be joined to the audience name in the
audience table but of course when I do this under this structure I get two
records resulting. Both these records are the the same other then then their
audience names. I need some way to catch these two audience names out of
there and display them in the email along with the rest of the email being
intact. Perhaps I should store them in a local var and then output them?

Anyone have a good way I can accomplish this?

Thanks in advance,

RE: Session vars in a clustered environment

2000-05-16 Thread Michael Paulsmeyer

Paul,

You can set up client management from the cfapplication tag and in the cf
server administrator you can create a db to hold client vars. All servers
in the cluster need to know about the DB.

Create the WDDX packet as a client variable.

Now when you need to save state, put the data into a WDDX packet. When you
need to get the data again, deserialize the packet.

Mike.

WDDX is an alternative to "Sticky Sessions"

The idea is to pass a WDDX packet back and

pages displayed to a given user to be from
different web servers. Perhaps we can call
this "non-Sticky Sessions" for short, or,
"Sessions_That_Aren't_Sticky_But_They_Maintain_State_Anyway"

This probably requires JS to enable each
link/page request to act as a form submit
and pass the WDDX packet as a hidden variable
back to the server. I'd be interested if
anyone comes up with an alternative.

Fine, I do this in the application.cfm with something like:

However the next bit is what I have a problem with. Surely this creates a
loop if the application.cfm also runs on login.cfm.

Wjat I want to know, short of putting these files in another directory with
an application.cfm that doesn't do the already-logged-in-check how can I
write a get out clause so I can send the user to a page with a log-in form
and send the form results to a database so the user can log-in. It's a real
chicken and egg situation. How can I get to a login page if the
application.cfm won't let me. I've solved it by putting the login .cfms in
another directory but is this the best and only solution. From looking at
the fusebox idea I'm certain it's not.

I'd love to hear of better solutions.

Re: Session vars in a clustered environment

2000-05-16 Thread Todd Ashworth

Yup .. that's the way it works .. but what if the person get's 'diconnected'
.. as in loses ability to get to the site for say .. 5 minutes? Now, I'm
not sure *exactly* how this works, so someone feel free to correct me.
Using a round-robin DNS setup (a less than optomized setup where, as users
come to a site with clustered servers, that site's DNS servers cycle through
the list of clustered servers and sends each user to the next server in the
list, regardless of that server's individual load .. repeat as needed)
wouldn't the user get routed to a different server than they were on last
time effectively destroying their session, even though it didn't
'legitimately' time out?

Now that I think about it, couldn't the same thing happen on a setup where
the load balancing employed routing to a particular server that had the
least load?

That has to work differently than I am thinking .. or at least there has to
be a 'more stateful' option available that will handle common internet
problems such as that.

Cookie Question!

2000-05-16 Thread Tiffany

Okay, giving cookies a shot.

I don't really see all that much explaination in Forta's book on cookies.
Anyhow, do I need to set multiple cookies if I want to to remember
multiple variables?

Or wait.. shouldn't I just set a cookie to remember a Username and then
use session variables to get the other info from the database? And then
if I dont want a page to be viewed without the person having a cookie
present, just check for a cookie in the begining of each page?

For instance,

After all the user/pass checking, loginaction.cfm will contain:

Then in start.cfm have the following:

Would that work? Or am I doing this all wrong? I wouldn't doubt it =)

Thanks!

could test it I suppose. You could set such a cookie on your computer and

HTTP_REFERER Problem

2000-05-16 Thread Brian Mitter

Hi All,
Any IIS wizards out there have any idea why we can never retrieve the
HTTP_REFERER variable if the user has come from ANOTHER server/domain? If
they come from another page on our server/domain we can retrieve the page
in HTTP_REFERER otherwise it is empty.
It is turned ON in the logging, is there anywhere else it can be turned
off in IIS?
   Thanks

What are the thoughts on using Client variables? These can get stored in
the registry on the server, act as cookies do, and there is no need to pass
URL or Hidden parameters around between pages.

I've used them in environments where cookies have given me problems in the
past, but am I missing something because I don't think anyone has mentioned
them in this thread. Are there any problems using them?
