Re: GIT Anyone?

2010-03-26 Thread Ben Alembick

Wow guys thats a lot of info, really useful cheers.

Ive just had a look at HG and cant even get it installed (not a good start),
keep getting an error message after the install process when eclipse restarts,
it attempts to open preferences and try's to save the mercurial section.

Any way thats on the Mac, and GIT is working ok (just learning :-)) I will try
both on the PC next week (time permitting).

I really like the idea of not having to rely on a Central repository, so
development can be done with no connection. Is it possible to work with SVN
like this. So i Have a main SVN repo on a staging server and i also have svn on
my laptop etc?

(am i right in describing one possible GIT setup as like SVN having a MAIN Repo
but also allowing the users themselves to have a repo?)

Gonna have a read of the Books Won Lee and Denstar have recomended.

Also a quick question. GITHUB provides the ability to keep a master repo there,
is it possible to replace GITHUB with my own server? Im guessing you can, but
could you give me some pointers which is the best way to approach this?

Can i use RDS protocol to import / push the repo?

Cheers really getting into this now.

GIT Anyone?

2010-03-24 Thread Ben Alembick

Hi,

I am completely new to this (eclipse and GIT - actually just trying to switch
from homesite :-) so project etc are a new phenomenon to me.), in fact i am
pretty new to source control in general i looked into using some (SVN) about 6
years ago but never actually got round to doing anything.

I have been recommended by a few people that if i am starting from scratch then
it would be a good idea to try and get my head around GIT as opposed to using
SVN. Plus my research seems to point towards GIT being the Future.

I have a general understanding of SVN in that a central repository is stored on
a server somewhere, and everyone takes their code from there, but GIT is made
up of lots of separate repositories 9not sure how they all link together)

The more i think about this the more i don't understand how its is all meant to
work. I have EGIT installed and have kinda gotten the hang of committing,
adding to version control resource history on a local project stored on my
machine.

However i have my live sites on a remote server hosted (at Alurium) how should
i go about getting the sites onto my local machine and using GIT? then syncing?

Im at a complete loss

Cheers in advance

Re: Development Apps - Does anyone use homesite still?

2010-03-12 Thread ben alembick

Ive just tried comparing speeds of cfbuilder, cfeclipse dreamweaver on
OSX

Opening folders:
cfelclipse take 45 seconds to load a ftp folder up
cfbuilder takes around 8-10 seconds
dreamweaver takes 2 seconds

Opening file:
cfelclipse i gave up trying to find a file it took so long
cfbuilder takes 3 seconds to open a file
dreamweaver takes about 4

Cfeclipses ftp isnt even worth considering, whats that all about.

Is it wrong of me to contemplate switching to dreamweaver, I remember years
ago (back in the mx days) that dreamweaver used to do some crazy stuff to my
code like switching cfoutputs close tags with close cfif 9very annoying).

Anyones views would be great, i really wanted to get into cfeclipse but the
ftp is awfull.

Please, please any views

 Hey Christian!

I should have said something the other day, but the select tag stuff
works on HTML elements too, in the latest CFEclipse preview release.
I broke the formatter putting it in, but I've got unit tests for the
formatting, so me no worry long.

Still need to add a context menu for tag select, and edit tag still
only works on CFML elements, but hey, we're getting there.

The awesome part is that I can use what I used to do the tag
selection, for doing that expand tag selection stuff you guys were
talking about. Ctrl+] expanding outwards from the selected tag.

Next is writing some unit tests for the proposal stuff, so we can nail
that down, instead of flying the helicopter, as it were.

 1.4.0 should be a pretty kick'n release.

Development Apps - Does anyone use homesite still?

2010-03-09 Thread Ben Alembick

Hi, Ive been using homesite for my coldfusion development now for years (does
anyone else still use it? id be interested), i have often attempted to swap to
eclipse or (more lately) cfbuilder but i find that i spend so much more time
trying to get used to the apps that i end up reverting when i need to get some
work done quickly, then im hooked back on homesite and the circle begins
again. (I also spend ages trying to make everything look like homesite :-))

I really would like to change to something more up to date, does anyone have
any suggestions / tips on how and what i should use (especially for MURA
development).

I also use a mac which i flip between dreamweaver and cfbuilder any ideas
there?

Also and please nobody scream, but i do a lot of my live development lately of
ftp (or sometimes RDS) - my dev work is mainly for my works local intranet. So
Homesites FTP is awesome compared to modern apps (they just don't make em like
they used to :-).

Thanks in advance

RE: Mac + CF + JRUN + Apache

2004-03-05 Thread Ben Alembick
Hi ive installed jrun4 and cfmx on my mac running osx 10.3 (panther), and
am having problems accessing .cfm files if i place a folder called test
containing a .cfm called test.cfm in the cfusion folder
(/applications/jrun4/servers/benserver/cfusion/test/test.cfm), Now when i
try and view this file in a browser
(http://localhost:8080/cfusion/test/test.cfm) it just downloads the file to
my machine and displays a blankpage, please could you let me know why this
is happening.

Also

How can i make my cf document root somewhere else and can it be run with
apache, and does anyone know how to make(or if theres one already) a
Startup script that will start jrun servers automatically. id be very
gratefull for any advice you can offer thank you.

Regards
Ben
